Proper Names As Narrative Gaps: A Deconstructive Reading Of Rosario Ferré And García Márquez, Dora Suarez
Proper Names As Narrative Gaps: A Deconstructive Reading Of Rosario Ferré And García Márquez, Dora Suarez
Honors College Theses
This thesis argues that language in general, and proper names in particular, are surreptitious examples of narrative gaps. In this way, in the context of literature, the narrative gaps enclosed in proper names enable the audience to become an active participant in a type of writing that exceeds the limit of the specific literary text at hand. In deconstructing the way in which proper names and nicknames are used by Rosario Ferré and García Márquez, this exposition shows how names, as conveyors of different identities, systematically enable an exercise of différance: they distinguish subjects while postponing an actual description of …
Martin Luther: Vater Einer Allgemeinen Sprache?, Annika Ewaldz
Martin Luther: Vater Einer Allgemeinen Sprache?, Annika Ewaldz

From Course Creation To Final Examination: Using Video Game Concepts To Inform The Writing Classroom, Farrah Senn
From Course Creation To Final Examination: Using Video Game Concepts To Inform The Writing Classroom, Farrah Senn
Student Success in Writing Conference (1999-2021)
Despite the amount of negative media regarding video game play, young people between the ages of 8 - 18 spend on average 90 minutes per day playing them. The saturation of this game-based knowledge presents opportunities for what Gavriel Solomon and D.N. Perkins call "high road transfer" to composition. By first introducing faculty to a new way of perceiving video game play by re-conceptualizing games as "texts," this presentation draws upon a synthesis of relevant literature to communicate the breadth of cognitive processes involved in game play and to describe ways of integrating this prior knowledge into the writing classroom. …

The Impact Of A Curricular And Professional Development Intervention On Elementary Science Teachers’ Perceptions Of High-Stakes Testing And Accountability, Georgina O. Lindskoog
The Impact Of A Curricular And Professional Development Intervention On Elementary Science Teachers’ Perceptions Of High-Stakes Testing And Accountability, Georgina O. Lindskoog
Open Access Dissertations
High-stakes testing and accountability (HSTA) is a topic largely debated because of the effects it can have on student learning. Teachers’ perceptions help determine teaching practices, ultimately teaching practices impact student learning, and unintended consequences of HSTA have been found to result in teaching practices that do not maximize meaningful student learning. The purpose of this study was to examine elementary science teachers’ perceptions of HSTA prior to an intervention and if participation in the intervention changed their perceptions. In addition, teacher professional variables (i.e., years of teaching and number of science courses taken) and school contextual factors (i.e., percent …

Phenomenology Redux: Doing Phenomenology, Becoming Phenomenological, Thomas A. Conklin
Phenomenology Redux: Doing Phenomenology, Becoming Phenomenological, Thomas A. Conklin
Organization Management Journal
This article revisits the phenomenological method with particular focus on how it is meaningful for me. The effort is to present this method as a personal journey that has evolved over 13 years and to illustrate how it might become a more accessible approach for meaning-making and serving others. This is partly accomplished by dethroning it from its lofty philosophical perch such that it is available for daily use by practitioners, educators, and researchers. Further accessibility is provided through the presentation of various examples in health care, higher education, and personal reflections on the experience of understanding and employing phenomenology. …

Bi-Level Remedies For Human Rights Violations, Gerald L. Neuman
Bi-Level Remedies For Human Rights Violations, Gerald L. Neuman
Harvard International Law Journal
This article seeks to add a different perspective to the important debate on the remedial practice of international human rights courts and tribunals. Currently, academic literature is dominated by attention to the comprehensive remedial practice of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, which advocates consider the fullest and therefore best approach to international human rights litigation. This article proposes a different analysis, emphasizing that international courts and tribunals differ from national authorities, and also differ from one another. Ordinarily, the goal of international human rights institutions is to induce action at the national level, in order to remedy past injuries …

Appellate Briefs
Amici curiae are law professors who teach and write about intellectual property and copyright law at law schools, colleges, and universities throughout the United States and Canada. We have no personal stake in the outcome of this case; our interest is in seeing that copyright law is applied in a manner most likely to fulfill its Constitutional mandate "to promote the Progress of Science," taking into account both the protections afforded to and the obligations imposed upon copyright holders and users of copyrighted works.

Founded in 1639, the Mather Elementary School in Dorchester is the oldest public elementary school in the US. In 2012, nearly 40% of Mather students were Vietnamese American from immigrant households. The Mather School’s Vietnamese Structured English Immersion (SEI) program is the largest in Boston. In 1993, Ngoc-lan (Loni) Nguyen, a Vietnamese refugee student in education and Asian American Studies at UMass Boston, was hired as a 4th grade bilingual teacher. Many of Lan’s students later attended UMass Boston where they reconnected educationally with the importance of Vietnamese American identity, community, and empowerment in AsAmSt courses. In 2007, Lan visited …

American Indian Oral Traditions And Their Relation To The Paleo-Seti Community, Rachel K. See
American Indian Oral Traditions And Their Relation To The Paleo-Seti Community, Rachel K. See
JCCC Honors Journal
Paleo-SETI is a social discourse which has seen rapidly increasing popularity since its conception in the late 1800’s. Its main focus is identifying evidence of intelligent extraterrestrial occupation of Earth in its distant past. The Paleo-SETI community commonly draws upon ancient oral and religious traditions, reinterpreting them as containing evidence of alien visitors. Commonalities such as ‘the flood’ and ‘cyclical time’ are also identified. Paleo-SETI thought also incorporates evidence of Supra human knowledge, anomalous archeological sites and seemingly unexplainabe advanced technology. This paper examined six American Indian Oral traditions and their relation to the evolving discourses in the Paleo-SETI community. …

Advocating For A Transitional Bilingual Education Program For English Language Learners, Sandy Ozimek
Policy Advocacy
This paper examined the development and implementation of a small Illinois school district’s English Language Learner policy, which advocated for the use of a Transitional Bilingual Education program. A number of challenges were addressed to provide English Language Learners with the same opportunity to attain high levels of academic achievement as English proficient students. Common English Language Learner program models were examined, and research that supported or refuted using students’ native language to aid in the acquisition of English was considered. An implementation plan addressed these challenges and an assessment plan ensured the policy met its intended goals so all …

Religion and ethnicity are deeply intertwined in American life. This does not mean that Americans cannot be one in the gospel, but we will need new models and new ideas of how to express our unity with one another that take into account the ethnic diversity of twenty-first-century America.

Assuming Identities: Gender, Sexuality, And Performativity In The Silence Of The Lambs, Lynne Stahl
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
In the introduction to Epistemology of the Closet, Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick discusses the instability of the ignorance/knowledge binary, which generally equates the latter with power and the former with impotence. She argues that ignorance (or the appearance thereof) can be a tool of power as well, citing as an example the 1986 ruling by the United States Justice Department that employers “may freely fire persons with AIDS” provided that those employers “can claim to be ignorant of the medical fact, quoted in the ruling, that there is no known health danger in the workplace from the disease” (5). That this …
