Exploring Online Social Capital Through The Lived-Experiences Of Students At A Southern Hispanic Institution: A Transactional Distance Approach, Marc Anthony Zamorano
Theses and Dissertations
This qualitative transcendental phenomenological study examines how first generation Hispanic doctoral students at a southern Hispanic Serving Institution experience online engagement as a context for generating bonding, bridging, and linking social capital. Semi structured-in-depth interviews with 17 participants explored interactions with instructors, peers, course content, and technology. Analysis followed phenomenological reduction procedures to identify the essence of participants lived experiences. Key findings revealed that instructor presence and responsiveness strengthened bonding and linking capital; peer collaboration fostered belonging and bridging capital; and technology mediated tools reduced transactional distance when paired with clear course design and timely feedback. These relational and technological …
Empowering Latinas In Computer Science: Success Stories And Challenges, Martin Jalomo
Empowering Latinas In Computer Science: Success Stories And Challenges, Martin Jalomo
Theses and Dissertations
Latina women remain significantly underrepresented in computer science, and limited research centers their lived experiences within the field. This qualitative narrative inquiry examined how Latina women who completed computer science degrees and secured employment persisted in predominantly male and non-Latina environments. Guided by Yosso’s (2005) Community Cultural Wealth framework, the study explored how participants leveraged forms of capital to navigate structural, relational, and psychological barriers. Data were collected through narrative interviews with five Latina graduates and analyzed using thematic and cross-case analysis. Findings indicate that underrepresentation shaped participants’ sense of belonging while persistence was supported through aspirational, familial, social, navigational, …

Typing Proficiency And Its Relationship To Outcomes In Online Writing Assessments, Agustin J. Cantu
Theses and Dissertations
As writing assessment increasingly occurs in digital environments, students must demonstrate not only composition skills but also sufficient transcription fluency to produce responses under timed conditions. This quantitative study examined the relationship among structured typing practice, transcription fluency, and writing performance among students in Grades 3 and 4 at IDEA Public Schools. Specifically, the study investigated whether engagement with Typing.com was associated with improvements in words per minute (WPM) and accuracy, and whether transcription fluency was associated with performance on Internal Assessment (IA) Writing Percent Correct.
Archival district data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, correlational analyses, hierarchical regression, moderation analyses, …
My Journey As A Migrant Bilingual Learner From Student To Teacher: Lessons Learned, Sylvia Lopez
My Journey As A Migrant Bilingual Learner From Student To Teacher: Lessons Learned, Sylvia Lopez
Theses and Dissertations
These reflections in this thesis are an analysis of narratives based on my lived experiences as an immigrant, migrant student who is now a certified Bilingual & Special Education teacher servicing students, many of whom are bilingual, in public school classrooms. My goal is to connect my life experiences to teaching practices and thus embrace and celebrate my linguistic identity. Bilingual educators have a language learning journey that drives their classroom practices. When bilingual teachers reflect on their bilingual trajectory and connect their life experiences to research, they may provide spaces for stronger positive impacts on bilingual students, and their …
Unpacking American Reception Of Glocalized Non-English Content In The Netflix Era, Sur Govindarajan
Unpacking American Reception Of Glocalized Non-English Content In The Netflix Era, Sur Govindarajan
Dissertations
The swift growth of streaming services has revolutionized the worldwide distribution of media, making it possible for non-English and non-English-adjacent content to reach American consumers on a never-before-seen scale, which is sometimes perceived as an indication of increasing cultural tolerance. However, while a lot is known about what audiences see, far less is known about how they really understand and assess these stories. There is a fundamental vacuum in our understanding of audience reception as a lived, meaning-making process because previous research has mostly focused on consumption patterns. In order to close that gap, this study examines how American audiences …
Llms-Based Text-To-Sql For Geospatial Information Retrieval, Temitayo Olamilekan Ogunsusi
Llms-Based Text-To-Sql For Geospatial Information Retrieval, Temitayo Olamilekan Ogunsusi
All Theses
Text-to-SQL aims to translate natural language questions into SQL queries that can be executed on databases, enabling non-expert users to retrieve information without learning formal query languages. Early Text-to-SQL systems relied on rule-based methods and semantic parsers, while recent advances in deep learning have achieved strong performance by jointly encoding user questions and database schemas. However, these approaches typically require large, annotated datasets and specific model architectures. With the emergence of large language models (LLMs), such as GPT-4, Llama, and Gemma, Text-to-SQL systems can leverage powerful natural language understanding capabilities to generate SQL queries using zero-shot or few-shot prompting. Despite …
Prism: Priming Relationships In Syntax And Mathematics, Michelle J. Zhu
Prism: Priming Relationships In Syntax And Mathematics, Michelle J. Zhu
Honors Scholar Theses
The implementation of sheltered education programs has become increasingly prevalent in schools as new research in second language acquisition emerges. Yet despite this growing attention to ESL instructional practice, far less is known about the cognitive processes that underlie how bilingual students engage with academic content. This study investigates cross-domain structural priming between mathematical and linguistic processing in monolingual and bilingual individuals, focusing on how bilingual experience influences syntactic attachment preferences. Prior research suggests that mathematical and linguistic structures share underlying cognitive representations, and that exposure to structures in one domain can influence processing in another. Additionally, bilingualism has been …
Into The Mainstream: How White Nationalism Has Been Disseminated Online And Legitimized In The United States At Large, Shannon O'Connor
Into The Mainstream: How White Nationalism Has Been Disseminated Online And Legitimized In The United States At Large, Shannon O'Connor
Honors Scholar Theses
The United States has experienced a rapid growth in extremism, reinforced by online social networks. Existing scholarship attributes increased extremism to political polarization, the appropriation of liberal norms of free speech, and white male racial anxiety. Present debates concern the popularity of alternative social networking platforms that provide opportunities for radicalization. Current scholars assume that online alternative sites are relatively isolated and engage in the most extreme cases of right-wing violence and hate speech. However, this thesis argues that extremism in the United States has been widespread and increasingly embedded in mainstream political discourse. I argue that leaders within the …

Spectacle And Survival: Tourism, Colonialism, And Indigenous Agency In Taiwan, A Case Study Of Alishan And The Tsou Indigenous Group, Ganga Corsaro
Standard Theses
This thesis examines tourism in Taiwan as a contemporary continuation of colonial processes through a case study of the Tsou people and the Alishan region. It traces how Tsou ancestral land was transformed into a national tourist landscape and analyzes how state tourism narratives frame Indigenous land and culture while obscuring histories of dispossession and political exclusion. At the same time, the thesis considers Indigenous tourism as a potential space for cultural continuity and self-representation when shaped by Indigenous authority and community priorities. By bringing together historical context, analysis of tourism materials, and scholarship on Indigenous tourism, this project argues …
Internalizing Diasporic Peoples: How Do We Keep Native Hawaiians Connected?, Kallie P. Kaaihue-Paopao
Internalizing Diasporic Peoples: How Do We Keep Native Hawaiians Connected?, Kallie P. Kaaihue-Paopao
Whittier Scholars Program
In the attempt to better understand the grounds for the generation culture disconnect of identity in Native Hawaiians, I study the diaspora of my people. Diaspora is the dispersion of people from their native lands. I find interest in this aspect of my people because the most common studies blame our dispersion on socioeconomic status and as a Native Hawaiian that wishes to do more for her people, I want to express that while it plays a part that there is a disconnection between the social actions and reactions of Hawaiʻi’s people. Common questions that I find unanswered are, why …
The "Evil Forest" As Threshold: A Computational Eco-Feminist Study Of The Forest In Nigerian Fantasy, Cynthia O. Mbagwu
The "Evil Forest" As Threshold: A Computational Eco-Feminist Study Of The Forest In Nigerian Fantasy, Cynthia O. Mbagwu
Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
This study examines the representation of the “evil forest” in Nnedi Okorafor’s Zahrah the Windseeker and Ukamaka Olisakwe’s Don’t Answer When They Call Your Name, arguing that the forest functions as a liminal threshold that catalyses female transformation. Combining close reading with computational tools like TF-IDF keyword extraction in Ruby and sentiment analysis using VADER, the project investigates how pre-colonial and colonial connotations of the “evil forest” are re-imagined in contemporary Nigerian fantasy fiction. By segmenting each narrative into pre-liminal, liminal, and post-liminal phases, the study tracks shifts in sentiment toward the forest and correlates them with thematic developments …
Transforming Theory Into Action: Feminist Frameworks In Reproductive Justice Organizing, Ella R. Mitchell
Transforming Theory Into Action: Feminist Frameworks In Reproductive Justice Organizing, Ella R. Mitchell
Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)
This honors thesis examines how feminist theoretical frameworks can be translated into practical strategies for reproductive justice organizing. Grounded in a reproductive justice framework and drawing on three key feminist frameworks, intersectional feminism, queer feminist theory, and feminist ethics of care, this paper explores how each provides critical tools for understanding and responding to reproductive oppression. Intersectional feminism illuminates how overlapping systems of inequality structure reproductive experiences and political marginalization. Queer feminist theory challenges heteronormative assumptions about family, gender, and reproduction, expanding reproductive justice discourse to include LGBTQ+ communities and diverse forms of kinship. Feminist ethics of care emphasizes relational …

Empowering English Language Learners For Academic Success, Tiger L. Rendon
Empowering English Language Learners For Academic Success, Tiger L. Rendon
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
This capstone explores how future educators in California can best support English Language Learners, who make up a large portion of the student population that strives for academic success. Despite ELL students being common in elementary school classrooms, the strategies that service teachers use are based on their own knowledge and experience, which, although beneficial, can be difficult to adapt in an ever-changing environment. This research was conducted to help future educators understand that, even without resources, many classroom strategies can empower ELL students and promote success. Through a literature review, an anonymous survey, and interviews with seven elementary school …
Importance Of Implementing Equity-Minded Pedagogy For Students In Early Childhood Education, Reina A. Yorba-Rico
Importance Of Implementing Equity-Minded Pedagogy For Students In Early Childhood Education, Reina A. Yorba-Rico
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Equity-minded pedagogy has become increasingly important in early childhood education as educators work to address systemic inequities affecting student learning, belonging, and long-term academic success. Early childhood classrooms serve as foundational spaces where students begin developing academic identities, social relationships, and perceptions of school environments. Because of this, inequitable teaching practices and exclusionary systems can have lasting consequences for historically marginalized students, including students of color, multilingual learners, low-income families, and first-generation students. Equity-minded pedagogy moves beyond equal treatment by recognizing structural barriers and intentionally creating inclusive learning environments that support diverse student needs. This senior capstone research project examines …

Developmental Trajectories Of Phonological And Morphological Awareness: Implications For Literacy Instruction, Hyohyun Shin, Catherine Mcbride
Developmental Trajectories Of Phonological And Morphological Awareness: Implications For Literacy Instruction, Hyohyun Shin, Catherine Mcbride
Science of Reading
We examine how phonological awareness and morphological awareness develop across early childhood and discuss the implications of these developmental trajectories for literacy instruction. Drawing on previous research, we highlight that these cognitive-linguistic skills develop in predictable progressions. We argue that understanding these developmental trajectories is essential for designing literacy instruction that is both evidence-based and developmentally appropriate.

In today’s diverse and modern healthcare systems, medical interpreters play a critical role in clinical safety and quality care. However, a pedagogical gap exists between classroom vocabulary mastery and the self-advocacy skills required in real-world clinical settings. This research evaluates the impact of AI-generated video simulations and GoReact’s time-coded feedback on the self-efficacy and self-advocacy of student interpreters enrolled in the Spanish Medical Interpreting Training course (SPAN 4081) at Utah State University’s Logan campus – as part of the Spanish Medical Interpretation & Translation certificate program during the Spring 2026 semester. By utilizing a mixed-methods research design, this study collected …
A Revised Quantifier Variance And Its Implications On Vagueness, Isaac Alexander Huling
A Revised Quantifier Variance And Its Implications On Vagueness, Isaac Alexander Huling
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This paper argues that the Special Composition Question has no substantive answer, not because compositional talk is empty but because the physical structure it tracks does not have the form that would privilege a unique answer. The argument accepts Sider’s methodological premise that the world must provide structure beyond description if ontological vocabulary is to mean anything, and deploys that apparatus against his specific application of it to composition. Constraint processes among a system’s parts – the forces and interactions that hold rigid bodies together, maintain organisms, bind solar systems – satisfy every condition Lewis required of reference magnets. They …
Semantically Grounded Evaluation For Open-Vocabulary Human-Object Interaction Detection, Maja Noack
Semantically Grounded Evaluation For Open-Vocabulary Human-Object Interaction Detection, Maja Noack
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Open-vocabulary human–object interaction (HOI) detection is a step towards building scal¬able systems that generalize to unseen interactions in real-world scenarios and support grounded multimodal systems that reason about human–object relationships. However, stan¬dard evaluation metrics, such as mean Average Precision (mAP), treat HOI classes as dis¬crete categorical labels and fail to credit semantically valid but lexically different predictions (e.g., “lean on couch” vs. “sit on couch”), limiting their applicability for evaluating open-vocabulary predictions that go beyond any predefined set of HOI labels. I introduce SHOE (Semantic HOI Open-Vocabulary Evaluation), a new evaluation framework that incorporates semantic similarity between predicted and ground-truth …

Public Health Responsible Ai Capability (Ph-Raic) Framework: A Conceptual Model For Integrating Ai Into Public Health Agencies, Arnob Zahid, Ravishankar Sharma, Rezwan Ahmed
All Works
Background: Artificial intelligence (AI) is transitioning from experimental pilots to core public health functions such as disease surveillance, resource planning, and analysis of social and structural determinants of health. Yet, health data collection and stewardship remain fragmented across the globe; some jurisdictions still rely on paper-based systems, while others operate noninteroperable digital systems that can exacerbate inequities. Treating health data as a global good therefore requires governance that enables innovation while protecting rights, safety, and trust. This study aims to develop a conceptual meso-level capability framework that translates responsible AI principles into organizational practices for public health agencies. Methods: We …
Albany City As A Case Study In Language Mapping, Storm Pupina
Albany City As A Case Study In Language Mapping, Storm Pupina
Linguistics
This thesis uses Albany, NY, as a case study in urban language mapping, following the example of many other language mapping projects, most notably the NYC Language Mapping Project. Albany's languages and linguistic features were analyzed to better understand the area's linguistic ecology and ongoing heritage-language maintenance efforts. Various types of American Census data were compared to reach the conclusions. Despite not being a major city, Albany is bustling with both new and old language communities. Similar efforts with more varied data-gathering tactics would greatly benefit other American urban landscapes.
Host Families’ Perspectives Of The Impact Of The Commodification Of Education On The Student-Host Family Relationship In Study Abroad, Guadalupe Bustamante
Host Families’ Perspectives Of The Impact Of The Commodification Of Education On The Student-Host Family Relationship In Study Abroad, Guadalupe Bustamante
Dissertations
The growing commodification of education has reshaped study abroad in ways that extend beyond marketing and program design. While homestays have traditionally been viewed as the ideal format for cultural immersion and language acquisition, research has largely overlooked how these trends affect the student-host family relationship from the family's perspective.
This study examines whether, and, if so, how Spanish host families perceive their roles and relationships with the American students they host have been impacted by these trends. Using a qualitative exploratory case study design, the research focused on representatives from eight families in Madrid, who have hosted U.S. students …
Educational Placemaking: The Radical Power Of Play, Hillary René Spencer
Educational Placemaking: The Radical Power Of Play, Hillary René Spencer
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Too often, play is dismissed as a simple childhood pastime, but what if it were understood as a radical tool for transformation? This research examines how play-based learning (PBL) interventions can serve as a framework for systemic change. Grounded in Edward Soja’s theory of spatial justice, which holds that socially valued resources and opportunities are unevenly distributed across geographic spaces (Soja, 2010), the study investigates how public spaces can serve as culturally reflective sites of learning and, when co-created with children and their communities, help address historical structural inequities. This research establishes educational placemaking as a framework for understanding play-based, …

Storm Clouds, Disheveled Storks, And Dangerous Animals: The Impact Of Concussion On Narrative Production Of A Silent Animated Video, Aislyn Grace O'Connell
Master's Theses and Capstones
Background: Concussion, or mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), is the most prevalent category of brain injury. Despite its classification as a mild injury, concussion can result in persistent symptoms that impact one’s ability to participate in everyday life. Among the challenges associated with concussion, discourse production (e.g., storytelling) has gained attention as a potential area of subtle impairment in people who have experienced a concussion, as it places high cognitive demands on the individual. Disruptions in cognitive processes may alter how individuals organize, interpret, and convey information in social contexts. However, discourse deficits are typically more apparent in severe TBI, …
