A Moral Panic? A Content Analysis Of Prominent Newspapers And Their Portrayal Of Tik Addiction, Chiara Keune Apr 2014

A Moral Panic? A Content Analysis Of Prominent Newspapers And Their Portrayal Of Tik Addiction, Chiara Keune

Theses and Dissertations

The rise of tik (methamphetamine) in the Western Cape of South Africa was an issue of contention for government and health care officials. Tik is the label given to the homemade crystal methamphetamine in South Africa, and the primary substance of abuse for many addicts seeking help. This paper sets out to examine tik from a moral panic perspective to understand if tik is an actual threat or a moral panic phenomenon. Two prominent newspapers were examined using content analysis. The Cape Times and Cape Argus were sampled to understand the social construction of tik. A moral panic is simply …

Imagineering As Complexity-Inspired Method For Transformative Service Design, Diane Nijs, Ir. Jo Van Engelen

ServDes Conference Series

Service design is increasingly oriented toward transformative aims and practices in organizations. With this evolution; service design is entering the fields of organizational studies and social change with high responsibility and sometimes little background knowledge of their respective theories; principles and their recent evolution. Particularly in the field of change and transformation; the recent evolution of theoretical insights and perspectives of organizational science are significant as the move towards complexity science is gaining academic acceptance and starts to be embraced in practice. This article presents Imagineering as a complexity-inspired design approach to realize transformational objectives; and it illustrates the method …

The Future Of The Service Design Category: Authentic Adaption As A Way Out?, Eva Kirchberger, Mark Kennedy Apr 2014

The Future Of The Service Design Category: Authentic Adaption As A Way Out?, Eva Kirchberger, Mark Kennedy

ServDes Conference Series

Service design as a new market category has emerged quite rapidly since the first pioneers; live|work in 2001 and Engine 2002 started offering service design commercially and claimed the label. Since then; a service design field has developed; which features institutions such as the Service Design Network; Master courses at universities; and academic conferences. Recently; the success of service design attracts management consultancies; which include service design as part of their core offering. This represents a challenge for the pioneers; as modifications of the practice might lead to ambiguous meanings and hence the category as a whole can suffer from …

Household Ecology And Out-Migration Among Ethnic Karen Along The Thai-Myanmar Border, Daniel M. Parker, James W. Wood, Shinsuke Tomita, Sharon Dewitte, Julia Jennings, Liwang Cui Apr 2014

Household Ecology And Out-Migration Among Ethnic Karen Along The Thai-Myanmar Border, Daniel M. Parker, James W. Wood, Shinsuke Tomita, Sharon Dewitte, Julia Jennings, Liwang Cui

Anthropology Faculty Scholarship

Local migration in developing-world settings, particularly among rural populations, is an important yet understudied demographic process. Research on migration in such populations can help us test and inform anthropological and demographic theory. Furthermore, it can lead to a better understanding of modern population distributions and epidemiologic landscapes.

Genetic And Morphological Diversity Of Trisetacus Species (Eriophyoidea: Phytoptidae) Associated With Coniferous Trees In Poland: Phylogeny, Barcoding, Host And Habitat Specialization, Mariusz Lewandowski, Anna Skoracka, Wiktoria Szydło, Marcin Kozak, Tobiasz Druciarek, Don A. Griffiths

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Library Materials

Eriophyoid species belonging to the genus Trisetacus are economically important as pests of conifers. A narrow host specialization to conifers and some unique morphological characteristics have made these mites interesting subjects for scientific inquiry. In this study, we assessed morphological and genetic variation of seven Trisetacus species originating from six coniferous hosts in Poland by morphometric analysis and molecular sequencing of the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit I gene and the nuclear D2 region of 28S rDNA. The results confirmed the monophyly of the genus Trisetacus as well as the monophyly of five of the seven species studied. Both DNA sequences …

Arabic Study Abroad: An Exploratory Study Of Connections Between Journal Writing And Language Gains, Kendon Kurzer, Dr. Dan Dewey Apr 2014

Arabic Study Abroad: An Exploratory Study Of Connections Between Journal Writing And Language Gains, Kendon Kurzer, Dr. Dan Dewey

Journal of Undergraduate Research

This project explored connections between language gains and instances of positive and negative responses as recorded in pseudo-dialogue journals kept by second language learners of Arabic participating in a study abroad (SA) program to Jordan. Daily journals from seven of forty-four total participants were analyzed for this project: those of the four students who showed the most proficiency gains over the course of the program as determined by pre- and post-study abroad program Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) scores, and those of the three students who showed no proficiency gains between their pre- and post-program OPI scores. Trends noted included the …

The Greek And Sanskrit Grammarians: A Comparative Analysis, Randall Craig Meister, Dr. Polyxeni Strolonga Apr 2014

The Greek And Sanskrit Grammarians: A Comparative Analysis, Randall Craig Meister, Dr. Polyxeni Strolonga

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The ancient grammarians of Greece and India followed an informatively comparable methodology in the light of modern-day ancient language pedagogy. This study examined the ancient texts of the Ashtadhyayi by Panini, Techne Grammike by Dionysius Thrax, and Peri Syntaxeos by Apollonius Dyscolus in terms of structure, potential application, and the reality of modern-day application within educational settings. Such an analysis yielded invaluable information concerning a number of common trends and principles among two of the central civilizations to influence the indo-european tradition of language teaching throughout the ages.

Change In Grammatical Competence On Study Abroad, Falk Kleinert, Dr. Hans Wilhelm Apr 2014

Change In Grammatical Competence On Study Abroad, Falk Kleinert, Dr. Hans Wilhelm

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Study abroad has long been argued to be the best way to improve a student´s proficiency in a second language, e.g., German. This claim is being scrutinized more and more in light of the current economic struggles facing many students and their families. This project is part of a larger study conducted by my mentor, Dr. Kelling, and his colleague, Dr. Laura Smith, assessing language gains on Berlin study abroad.

The Imperial Temple At Antiochia Ad Cragum: Aspects Of Architecture And Iconography, Geraldine S. Dobos

School of Art, Art History, and Design: Theses and Student Creative Work

Along the northeastern Mediterranean shore lies Antiochia ad Cragum, an ancient city located in the western area of the Roman province of Rough Cilicia. It is now known as the village of Guney, in southern Turkey. The Northeast Temple is the first Imperial structure at Antiochia that has been revealed in its entirety and its reconstruction is anticipated. This excavation by the University of Nebraska (Antiochia ad Cragum Archaeological Research Project, or ACARP), is directed by UNL Professor Michael Hoff.

The hypothetical reconstruction of the Northeast Temple’s geison course, which I present, emphasizes certain diagnostic features that may be used …

Factors Influencing Language Gains For Chinese Speakers During Study Abroad, Spencer Ring, Andrew Westover, Dr. Dan Dewey Apr 2014

Factors Influencing Language Gains For Chinese Speakers During Study Abroad, Spencer Ring, Andrew Westover, Dr. Dan Dewey

Journal of Undergraduate Research

In this project, we aimed to investigate factors that influence study abroad students’ development of linguistic proficiency in Mandarin Chinese. We decided to focus on Mandarin Chinese because, as Dewey (2007) observes, an understanding of what factors affect the development of proficiency in Asian languages is limited compared with European languages, which have received more research focus in second language acquisition studies.

Pronunciation Gains On Berlin Study Abroad: Does Starting Proficiency Play A Role?, Emily Hall, Dr. Laura Smith Apr 2014

Pronunciation Gains On Berlin Study Abroad: Does Starting Proficiency Play A Role?, Emily Hall, Dr. Laura Smith

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Study abroad programs have long enjoyed the prestige of being considered an exceptionally effective way to become fluent in a second language (Freed 1998). This conclusion has been supported by a multitude of studies. Smith, Aten, and Baker (2009) showed that German students on an 11-week study abroad in Berlin and on a similar study abroad in Vienna improved their accentedness, fluency, and comprehensibility in the course of the program. Moreover, Freed (1998) notes that many large-scale studies tend to find overall improvement in the listening and speaking skills of students participating in a study abroad. However, not all studies …

Ethnic Group Affiliation And Second Language Acquisition, Sarah Franklin, Dr. Wendy Baker-Smemoe Apr 2014

Ethnic Group Affiliation And Second Language Acquisition, Sarah Franklin, Dr. Wendy Baker-Smemoe

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Over the past forty years a significant amount of research has explored how to improve second language (L2) acquisition, most of which has examined factors that influence this ability. Little research, however, has examined how ethnic group affiliation (defined as how closely you feel attached to your native culture and language) affects this learning, especially in bilingual communities. It is hoped that the current research will not only help in understanding the many factors that influence L2 acquisition, but may also demonstrate how ethnic group affiliation can be used to preserve endangered languages throughout the world.

A Study Of Second Language Acquisition Of Glottal Ejectives Through A Comparative Phonetic Analysis Of Mayan Q’Eqchi’ Native Speakers And English L2 Learners Of Q’Eqchi’, Karl Olaw Christian Wagner, Dr. Wendy Baker Smemoe

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The research the grant from the Office of Research and Creative Activities has allowed me to perform has been a wonderful opportunity that has helped me to take my undergraduate work to a higher level. To be able to apply the linguistic knowledge I’ve gained in the classroom in real research, even research abroad at that has been of great worth to me. The entire process has been a learning experience and continues to be so as I finish my work on this project. This process, from the first rough sketches of a possible research project to the current work …

Japanese Sentence Parsing In An Artificial Intelligence System, Nathan Glenn, Dr. Deryle Lonsdale Apr 2014

Japanese Sentence Parsing In An Artificial Intelligence System, Nathan Glenn, Dr. Deryle Lonsdale

Journal of Undergraduate Research

In this project, we created a Japanese sentence parser that functions within a cognitive modeling architecture known as Soar. It was created by modifying an existing English parser called XNL-Soar, which implements minimalist principles in syntactic parsing. Japanese lexical access is performed via GoSen and a Java interface to the Japanese WordNet, and syntactic and semantic processing is done within Soar. The ease with which the parser was modified to process Japanese input is extremely encouraging and lends support to its use as model of human sentence processing, as well as to the Minimalist Program in linguistics. The system is …

The Qualitative Report

In this and subsequent issues, The Qualitative Report will publish eight articles about a journal written by Edward B. Emerson (1805-1834), a younger brother of American philosopher and writer Ralph Waldo Emerson. This introduction will describe the origins of the project, the sources, the process and the outcomes of the collaboration. The authors hope to document and illustrate the richness and value of interdisciplinary qualitative inquiry, while providing specifics of how the Emerson Journal Project evolved. We provide examples to illustrate the characteristics of effective teamwork, but also present the challenges along the way and how they were surmounted. The …

Supporting Student Justification In Middle School Mathematics Classrooms: Teachers' Work To Create A Context For Justificaiton, Megan Staples Apr 2014

Supporting Student Justification In Middle School Mathematics Classrooms: Teachers' Work To Create A Context For Justificaiton, Megan Staples

CRME Publications

Justification is an important disciplinary and learning practice. Despite a growing knowledge base regarding how teachers orchestrate mathematical discussions, few analyses have considered the orchestration of specific disciplinary practices such as justification. Using classroom video data from the JAGUAR project, we analyze two instantiations of extensive student justification in seventh-grade classrooms and document each teacher’s pedagogical approach that supported students’ engagement in this practice. We argue that, although there was overlap in their pedagogical repertoires, the teachers created a context for student justification in two unique ways. We document the similarities and differences in their approaches, including the nature of …
