Lion Tales: The Impact Of Educational Policy Discourse On The Perpetuation Of The Perception Of African American Academic Underachievement, Marshetta Shavon Brazley Dec 2014

Lion Tales: The Impact Of Educational Policy Discourse On The Perpetuation Of The Perception Of African American Academic Underachievement, Marshetta Shavon Brazley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Academic achievement for African American students has remained consistently low over time. Some researchers cite the disintegration of the black family as the cause. Others have argued that IQ is largely influenced by genetics, and that African Americans are genetically predisposed to be less intelligent than other races. One researcher traces the socio-historical connection between the institution of slavery and the current inequality inherent in the American education system. He also contends that the differences between African American culture and mainstream culture are so great that they adversely impact African American academic achievement. The purpose of the critical comparative discourse …

Dutch Landscape Painting: Documenting Globalization And Environmental Imagination, Irene J. Klaver Dec 2014

Dutch Landscape Painting: Documenting Globalization And Environmental Imagination, Irene J. Klaver

Proceedings from the Document Academy

There is an old saying that God made the Earth, but the Dutch made the Netherlands; they did this by engineering relationships of the water and land.

The Dutch landscape is an authored landscape documenting human reaction to geological, economic, and cultural changes. As a consequence of Dutch globalization, landscape painting arose as a new form of painting, documenting these changes and reactions to them. In a period of newly created land, reclaimed and constructed by sheer human activity, the explicit construction of new environments apparently elicited an implicit desire to hold on to an older, familiar traditional landscape. The …

Access To Information And Implications For Healthy Ageing In Africa: Challenges And Strategies For Public Libraries, Ifeanyi J. Ezema, Richard N. Ugwuanyi Dr.

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The elderly people are of intrinsic value to societies. Their health is Africa’s wealth. Unfortunately, Africa has serious health burden raging from diseases, poverty ignorance that hardly support healthy ageing. Development indicators from World Health Organization and the World Bank provide glaring evidence that Africa countries are far behind other regions of the world in health conditions of the citizens. This paper discusses the benefits that accrue from having a healthy old age population. Such includes poverty reduction, stress free ageing, assisting in taking care of young ones. It examines the role of information in enhancing healthy ageing in Africa. …

Automated Speech Act Classification In Tutorial Dialogue, Borhan Samei Dec 2014

Automated Speech Act Classification In Tutorial Dialogue, Borhan Samei

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Speech act classification is the task of detecting speakers' intentions in discourse. Speech acts are based on the language as action theory according to which when we say something we do something. Speech act classification has various application in natural language processing and dialogue-based intelligent systems. In this thesis, we propose machine learning models for speech act classification that account for both content of the current utterance and context (previous utterances) of dialogue and we present this work on two domains: human-human tutoring sessions and multi-party chat based intelligent tutoring systems. The proposed speech act classification models were trained and …

The Native American Organic Garden: Using Service Learning As A Site Of Resistance To The Boarding School Tradition, Donna Chollett Dec 2014

The Native American Organic Garden: Using Service Learning As A Site Of Resistance To The Boarding School Tradition, Donna Chollett

Anthropology Publications

As educators, we owe it to our students to enable them to transgress structural impediments and to create sustainable alternatives from the margins of the industrial agro-food system. Policies of assimilation, allotment, and enclosure of the Native American commons and ecosystems brought devastation to Native cultures. Dependence on government commodities replaced Native food sovereignty and contributed to malnutrition, obesity, and diabetes as diets responded to corporately produced and processed foods. Young people often feel disempowered and ask how they might confront such formidable forces as corporate control of our agro-food system, destruction of natural resources, and threats to human health. …

Geographic Distribution And Adaptive Significance Of Genomic Structural Variants: An Anthropological Genetics Perspective, Muthukrishnan Eaaswarkhanth, Pavlos Pavlidis, Omer Gokcumen Dec 2014

Geographic Distribution And Adaptive Significance Of Genomic Structural Variants: An Anthropological Genetics Perspective, Muthukrishnan Eaaswarkhanth, Pavlos Pavlidis, Omer Gokcumen

Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints

Anthropological geneticists have successfully used single nucleotide and short tandem repeat variations across human genomes to reconstruct human history. These markers have also been used extensively to identify adaptive and phenotypic variation. The recent advent of high-throughput genomic technologies revealed an overlooked type of genomic variation, namely structural variants (SVs). In fact, some SVs may contribute to human adaptation in substantial and previously unexplored ways. SVs include deletions, insertions, duplications, inversions and translocations of genomic segments that vary among individuals from the same species. SVs are much less numerous than single nucleotide variants, but account for at least seven times …

Examining Video Self-Modeling In Promoting Food Acceptance In Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder In A School Setting, Gail M. Loughlin Rogers Dec 2014

Examining Video Self-Modeling In Promoting Food Acceptance In Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder In A School Setting, Gail M. Loughlin Rogers

Doctoral Dissertations

Children with autism spectrum disorder have a higher incident of feeding problems as compared with typical children and children with other developmental delays, with the feeding problems more often identified as learned or behavioral. Research into the effectiveness of antecedent- and consequence-based behavioral strategies continue to grow, with most research conducted within clinical settings. As educators we strive for less restrictive and empirically validated interventions within more naturalistic settings. Despite the growing body of research as to the effectiveness of video modeling to affect change across a number of areas, research using video modeling is sparse with respect to food …

Deepeval: An Integrated Framework For The Evaluation Of Student Responses In Dialogue Based Intelligent Tutoring Systems, Rajendra Banjade Dec 2014

Deepeval: An Integrated Framework For The Evaluation Of Student Responses In Dialogue Based Intelligent Tutoring Systems, Rajendra Banjade

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The automatic assessment of student answers is one of the critical components of an Intelligent Tutoring System (ITS) because accurate assessment of student input is needed in order to provide effective feedback that leads to learning. But this is a very challenging task because it requires natural language understanding capabilities. The process requires various components, concepts identification, co-reference resolution, ellipsis handling etc. As part of this thesis, we thoroughly analyzed a set of student responses obtained from an experiment with the intelligent tutoring system DeepTutor in which college students interacted with the tutor to solve conceptual physics problems, designed an …

Standard Written English Grammar And Usage In The First-Year Composition Classroom: First-Year Composition Educators' Perspectives, Mary-Gwynne M. Millione

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

A study was conducted to discover how first-year composition (FYC) teachers at large, public, 4-year universities respond to students who write prose with numerous Standard Written English (SWE) errors, the techniques the teachers use, and if the teachers perceive themselves as positively impacting the students’ writing. The researcher believed the teachers’ background (i.e., education and experience) would have an effect. Method: An anonymous survey was sent to FYC teachers at large, public, 4-year universities. A follow-up interview was conducted, and a web search performed. Results: One hundred and twenty-one participants completed the survey; three were interviewed. Over 49% used the …

Aristotle’S Voluntary/Deliberate Distinction, Double-Effect Reasoning, And Ethical Relevance, Thomas A. Cavanaugh Dec 2014

Aristotle’S Voluntary/Deliberate Distinction, Double-Effect Reasoning, And Ethical Relevance, Thomas A. Cavanaugh

Philosophy

I articulate Aristotle’s account of the voluntary with a view to weighing in on a contemporary ethical debate concerning the moral relevance of the intended/foreseen (i/f) distinction. Natural lawyers employ the i/f distinction to contrast consequentially comparable acts with different intentional structures. They propose that consequentially comparable acts of, for example, terror and tactical bombing morally differ based on their diverse structures of intention. Opponents of DER hold that one best captures the widely acknowledged intuitive appeal of the distinction by contrasting agents, not acts. These thinkers hold that the terror bomber differs from the tactical bomber while terror and …

A Critical Humanist Curriculum, Kevin Magill, Arturo Rodriguez Dec 2014

A Critical Humanist Curriculum, Kevin Magill, Arturo Rodriguez

Literacy, Language, and Culture Faculty Publications and Presentations

This essay is a critical humanist discussion of curriculum; a departure from the technicist view of education [education meant to support a global capitalist economy] and an analysis of curriculum considering critical humanism, political economy and critical race theory among other modes of critical analysis and inquiry. Our discussion supports a revolutionary curriculum: the turn from a static coercive system of domination where the everyday lives of students are controlled to a dynamic liberatory education where education supports a student's imaginary (Pinar), creativity and their everyday practice of freedom (Freire, Greene, hooks).

Generational Inversions: 'Working' For Social Reproduction Amid Hiv In Swaziland, Casey Golomski Dec 2014

Generational Inversions: 'Working' For Social Reproduction Amid Hiv In Swaziland, Casey Golomski

Anthropology

How do people envision social reproduction when regular modes of generational succession and continuity are disrupted in the context of HIV/AIDS? How and where can scholars identify local ideas for restoring intergenerational practices of obligation and dependency that produce mutuality rather than conflict across age groups? Expanding from studies of HIV/AIDS and religion in Africa, this article pushes for an analytic engagement with ritual as a space and mode of action to both situate local concerns about and practices for restoring dynamics of social reproduction. It describes how the enduring HIV/AIDS epidemic in Swaziland contoured age patterns of mortality where …
