"Making Ourselves Over In The Image Of The Imagery": Overcoming Alienation Through Poetic Expressions Of Experience, Jacqueline Aquino Teusch
"Making Ourselves Over In The Image Of The Imagery": Overcoming Alienation Through Poetic Expressions Of Experience, Jacqueline Aquino Teusch
Theses and Dissertations
My focus for this essay is on understanding the rhetorical process that occurs when people come together despite their differences—that is what rhetoric is all about. Kenneth Burke argues that this process, for alienated people especially, happens poetically, more than semantically because there are too many differences to overcome semantically between alienated people and the dominant community. This essay is about how the rhetorical process of identification as described by Burke helps us to explain how we cross barriers that divide people who are different to create moments of mutual understanding—identification. In this essay, I look at the experience of …

Using Game Engine Technologies For Increasing Cognitive Stimulation And Perceptive Immersion, Garrett Keenaghan, Imre Horváth
Conference papers
With the development of more user friendly game engine packages and software, detailed cognitive stimulation of procedural activities has now become easier to develop in virtual reality environments. With packages offering built-in visual editors, the amount of labour hours required for the development of specific applications are reduced. This paper considers the use of computer supported game engine technology to provide location independent comprehension and procedural skills learning for built environment education.
With So Little Time, Where Do We Start? Targeted Teaching Through Analyzing Error Egregiousness And Error Frequency, Katie Fredrickson
With So Little Time, Where Do We Start? Targeted Teaching Through Analyzing Error Egregiousness And Error Frequency, Katie Fredrickson
Theses and Dissertations
Why do so many students confuse good writing with simply error-free writing, and what can writing instructors do about it? In order to answer this question, the present study first undertakes an exploration of the different meanings associated with grammar and how those definitions have influenced composition instruction. These influences range from an over-emphasis on grammar in the first half of the twentieth century to allowing it to disappear almost completely from the composition curriculum in the second half of the century. However, because research demonstrates that students over this same time period make errors in writing at a fairly …
Modeling And Simulation Of A Resource Allocation Problem, Oredola A. Soluade
Modeling And Simulation Of A Resource Allocation Problem, Oredola A. Soluade
Communications of the IIMA
Resource allocation can be viewed from several perspectives. One perspective is to view it as a capacitated Facility Location Problem, whereby resources that are located in certain places are being employed to certain other locations at a minimum cost. One of the most challenging scenarios in any organization is the ability to allocate resources to specific functions so as to maximize productivity. This paper develops a mathematical model that can be used to “optimally” deploy human resources to various parts of an organization, while at the same time minimizing the overall cost of operations. The technique to be used belongs …

Technology plays an important role in everyday life of K-6 students born in the digital age. In the past several decades, educational institutions have made substantial investments in technology infrastructure with the aim of enhancing student learning, increasing student achievement, and helping students acquire digital literacy skills early on in their education. However, to fully leverage web-based technologies for student learning and communication inside and outside of school, teachers must be prepared to effectively plan, develop, and integrate technology into the curriculum-based activities of their classrooms. Educational web portals with resources for teaching, learning and communicating, can help teachers create …

The DIKW hierarchy has long been a standard framework with which researchers can differentiate between levels of what they see and know. However much of the research conducted explores the nuances and precise divisions between each hierarchy level and assumes that the user will know how to use them. We plan to restrict our study to textual Web documents and propose a framework extension to the DIKW hierarchy that encompasses acquisition, delivery and prediction elements. We feel that such an extension can help better define each level of the DIKW hierarchy into discrete units that can be applied to the …
A Fuzzy Logic Based Decision Support System For Business Situation Assessment And E-Business Models Selection, Hussein Fakhry
A Fuzzy Logic Based Decision Support System For Business Situation Assessment And E-Business Models Selection, Hussein Fakhry
Communications of the IIMA
A new decision support system is developed for assisting business executives in deciding the e-business models to adopt for new business ventures. The developed system is based on a new framework using fuzzy logic theory. A detailed conceptual design is developed. The proposed system solves important challenges such as the use of linguistic terms to capture the executives’ assessments of the key business measures. It uses fuzzy assessment rule to find the overall grade for each business dimension. Moreover, its rule-base allows adding large number of new e-business models. A prototype is tested with business executives and received positive feedback.
The Effect Of Comment Errors In Multilingual Electronic Meetings, Milam Aiken, Shilpa Balan, Mahesh Vanjani, Bart Garner
The Effect Of Comment Errors In Multilingual Electronic Meetings, Milam Aiken, Shilpa Balan, Mahesh Vanjani, Bart Garner
Communications of the IIMA
Previous studies of multilingual electronic meetings have shown that members often comprehend the automatic translations, but accuracy is affected by errors in the source comments. However, no study has investigated to what extent these text errors reduce understanding. An experiment with six groups of students showed that participants were able to comprehend translations from German to English, even when the source text contained 5% word errors, but translations from source comments with no errors were understood better. Further, the differences in comprehension affected students’ perceptions of the system’s ease of use and usefulness.

Dear: A New Technique For Information Extraction And Context-Dependent Text Mining, Tod Sedbrook, Jay M. Lightfoot
Communications of the IIMA
The desire to store and the need to use electronic data has greatly increased as the power, availability, and connectivity of computers has grown. A large portion of this data is in the form of unstructured text documents. Locating specific information within this amorphous mass of documents is an area of active research. Our contribution to this pursuit is the development of the Document Entity and Resolution (DEAR) system. This system combines semantic similarity matching as provided by the open source WordNet database with the ability to recognize named entities through the OpenCalais system. When used in concert, this provides …
Analyzing Parts Of Speech And Their Impact On Stock Price, Robert P. Schumaker
Analyzing Parts Of Speech And Their Impact On Stock Price, Robert P. Schumaker
Communications of the IIMA
Financial articles can move stock prices. The terms used in an article can be a predictor of both price direction and the magnitude of movement. By investigating the usage of terms in financial news articles and coupling them with a discrete machine-learning algorithm, we can build a model of short-term price movement. From our research, we investigated the terms creating the largest price movements amongst five part of speech textual representations; bag of words, noun phrases, named entities, proper nouns and verbs.
Re-Telling Old Stories: Chaucer’S Italian Poetics Of Intertextual Commentary, Leah A. Schwebel
Re-Telling Old Stories: Chaucer’S Italian Poetics Of Intertextual Commentary, Leah A. Schwebel
Doctoral Dissertations
Re-telling Old Stories situates Chaucer within a classical and Italian tradition of intertextuality. By looking beyond Chaucer’s immediate textual models to how his authors are themselves using and translating literary works, I demonstrate that much of what we have attributed to Chaucer’s desire to appear erudite—particularly his frequent occlusion of his vernacular model, Boccaccio—instead shows him manipulating strategies of authorial engagement deriving from antiquity. Crucially, these strategies are not anxious responses to poetic influence, motivated by fear of similarity or, worse, inferiority, as Harold Bloom might argue. Rather, they indicate Chaucer’s playful engagement with his precursors on their own terms, …
Elicited Imitation Test For Brazilian Portuguese, Jerrett Lever, Dr. Deryle Lonsdale
Elicited Imitation Test For Brazilian Portuguese, Jerrett Lever, Dr. Deryle Lonsdale
Journal of Undergraduate Research
An elicited imitation (EI) test is a simple, indirect method of assessing language ability and proficiency. EI works by having subjects hear a determined item (or sentence) and having them repeat the item back as close as possible to what is heard. The theory of EI proposes that to hear a sentence, process its meaning, and produce an imitation exactly the same in meaning as that given requires the subject (test taker) to have a level of proficiency in the language being tested equal to that which the item is examining (Bley-Vroman and Chaudron 1994). Though EI has been shown …

Children's Adaptation To Electropalatography: Evidence From Acoustic Analysis Of /T/ And /K/, Kara Brianne Knapp
Children's Adaptation To Electropalatography: Evidence From Acoustic Analysis Of /T/ And /K/, Kara Brianne Knapp
Theses and Dissertations
Electropalatography (EPG) is a computer-based device that uses a fitted pseudopalate (similar to an orthodontic retainer) with embedded electrodes to track tongue-to-palate contact during speech for the purposes of providing treatment for a variety of communication disorders. This study evaluated six elementary school-aged children's ability to adapt their speech to the presence of the pseudopalate in their mouth. The participants' adaptation for the consonants /t/ and /k/ was examined over eight time intervals throughout a two and half hour time period. Adaptation was evaluated by measuring the duration, spectral mean, spectral variance, and relative intensity of the target sounds. The …
Creating A Phrase Similarity Graph From Wikipedia, Lubomir Stanchev
Creating A Phrase Similarity Graph From Wikipedia, Lubomir Stanchev
Computer Science and Software Engineering
The paper addresses the problem of modeling the relationship between phrases in English using a similarity graph. The mathematical model stores data about the strength of the relationship between phrases expressed as a decimal number. Both structured data from Wikipedia, such as that the Wikipedia page with title “Dog” belongs to theWikipedia category “Domesticated animals”, and textual descriptions, such as that the Wikipedia page with title “Dog” contains the word “wolf” thirty one times are used in creating the graph. The quality of the graph data is validated by comparing the similarity of pairs of phrases using our software that …

Convergent Evolution Of Aquatic Foraging In A New Genus And Species (Rodentia: Muridae) From Sulawesi Island, Indonesia, Kevin C. Rowe, Anang S. Achmadi, Jacob A. Esselstyn
Faculty Publications
The island of Sulawesi, in Indonesia, lies at the crossroads of the Indo-Australian Archipelago and has remained isolated from the Asian (Sunda) and Australian (Sahul) continental shelves for at least the last 10 million years. Of the 50 native species of rodents on Sulawesi, all are endemic and represent the evolution of a variety of ecological and morphological forms within the Muridae and Sciuridae. Carnivorous rodents have evolved, perhaps independently, in Muridae from the Philippines, Sulawesi, and Sahul, but semi-aquatic murids are only known from Sahul. Here we describe a new genus and species of insectivorous water rat from Sulawesi. …
The Use Of Dictionaries, Glosses, And Annotations To Facilitate Vocabulary Comprehension For L2 Learners Of Russian, Elizabeth Christel Todd
The Use Of Dictionaries, Glosses, And Annotations To Facilitate Vocabulary Comprehension For L2 Learners Of Russian, Elizabeth Christel Todd
Theses and Dissertations
Technology is changing education. Just 30 years ago, instructors were using slow, inefficient technology such as projectors and reels of film, whereas today they have instant access to video from anywhere in the world. This capability has the potential to change the way that language is being taught and learned. Instead of students relying solely on their teacher and textbook for linguistic input, they have access to the Internet which holds a seemingly endless amount of information. This study was inspired by the belief that it is possible to maximize the potential benefit from that availability by implementing the theory …

The present study was designed to understand the retrospective account of the learning experience of four successful learners of Russian who made substantial oral gains as measured by the ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) during a semester study abroad (SA) program in Moscow, Russia. Each participant made as much as two sublevels' improvement on the ACTFL scale, even those who began with Advanced level proficiency. Specifically, the study examines what students believe, how they exercise their agency, cope with constraints, and take advantage of affordances in out-of-class contexts. The qualitative data includes semi-structured interviews while quantitative data consists of pre- …
Designing Deployment: A Visual Paper Of The Batch Deployment Of Research Prototypes, David Cameron, Nadine Jarvis, Andy Boucher
Designing Deployment: A Visual Paper Of The Batch Deployment Of Research Prototypes, David Cameron, Nadine Jarvis, Andy Boucher
DRS Biennial Conference Series
In this paper we present the detailed design decision-making that went into the deployment phase of a project exploring Third Wave HCI [5] through batch-produced devices. Building on the studio’s design-led methodologies, we produced multiple sets of Indoor Weather Stations (IWS), research devices that explore the microclimate of the home, and deployed them to 22 households over the course of a year to gather polyphonic feedback from participants [2]. This project built upon our previous work of gathering polyphonic views of devices deployed to one or few households [6], but in order to scale our practice for multiple deployments, we …
Design As Rhetoric In The Discourse Of Resonance, Veronika Kelly
Design As Rhetoric In The Discourse Of Resonance, Veronika Kelly
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Design that is effective by way of having an influence and impact on a human subject’s belief, behaviour, or action is a key concern of designers in the field of visual communications. Because of these aspects, one discourse that has grown in scholarly circles over recent decades is that design is a form of rhetoric. Nonetheless, the way that rhetoric has been applied to design practice itself – as a means of analysing the communicative function of designed artefacts and to posit propositions for practice – has remained largely theoretical. The purpose of this paper is to extend an understanding …
Space-And-Place Modelling-And-Making: A Dialogue Between Design And Geography, Robert Harland, Maria Loschiavo Dos Santos
Space-And-Place Modelling-And-Making: A Dialogue Between Design And Geography, Robert Harland, Maria Loschiavo Dos Santos
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Geography and design have much in common. Both draw from or reflect science, social science, humanities, and employ sophisticated technology to achieve their aims. However, aside from a mutual interest in urbanism, there appears to have be little collaboration between the two. And yet some aspire for design to learn from geography. In this paper we explore how the characteristics associated with geography and design may function together in a space-and-place modelling-and-making dialectic.

The process of design is a complex, multifaceted activity that requires sophisticated professional thinking and competence, described as reflection in action and embodied process where hand, eye, and mind collaborate. We propose that cognitive neuroscience provide valuable tools for analysing processes of thinking and acting relevant to designing. This paper discusses the challenges and opportunities that use of brain imaging methods, especially, provides for understanding activities, skills, and cognition of design. We argue that cognitive neurosciences provide valuable instruments and methods complementing traditional design research.
