Preliminary Test Of A Real-Time, Interactive Silent Speech Interface Based On Electromagnetic Articulograph, Jun Wang, Ashok Samal, Jordan R. Green Jun 2014

Preliminary Test Of A Real-Time, Interactive Silent Speech Interface Based On Electromagnetic Articulograph, Jun Wang, Ashok Samal, Jordan R. Green

School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers

A silent speech interface (SSI) maps articulatory movement data to speech output. Although still in experimental stages, silent speech interfaces hold significant potential for facilitating oral communication in persons after laryngectomy or with other severe voice impairments. Despite the recent efforts on silent speech recognition algorithm development using offline data analysis, online test of SSIs have rarely been conducted. In this paper, we present a preliminary, online test of a real-time, interactive SSI based on electromagnetic motion tracking. The SSI played back synthesized speech sounds in response to the user’s tongue and lip movements. Three English talkers participated in this …

Voices From The Classroom: Elementary Students’ Perceptions Of Blogging, Ewa Mcgrail, Anne Davis Jun 2014

Voices From The Classroom: Elementary Students’ Perceptions Of Blogging, Ewa Mcgrail, Anne Davis

Georgia Educational Researcher

Blogging appears to be a promising instructional strategy which may provide solutions to some of the challenges in traditional writing instruction; however, few studies explore elementary students’ views on blogging. This qualitative case study gives elementary students voice as it examines their perceptions of blogging and their views of themselves as writers, readers, and learners. The researchers drew from multiple data sources, including student and teacher interviews, student and teacher blog writing, and classroom observations, to ascertain young writers’ perspectives. The findings indicate these student bloggers’ reader awareness and appreciation of the reader-writer relationship. Student bloggers also benefited from emotional …

The Learning Of Phonetic Flap By English Language Learners: Data From Kindergarten And Fourth Grade, Lauren Elizabeth Burrows Jun 2014

The Learning Of Phonetic Flap By English Language Learners: Data From Kindergarten And Fourth Grade, Lauren Elizabeth Burrows

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Little is known about the learning of allophonic variations by second-language learners. Accurate production of allophonic variants depends on the context in which a sound occurs. The flap, an allophone of English and a phoneme of Spanish, is used in different environments in English and Spanish. Given these differences, how do young English language learners (ELLs) address allophonic variation as presented by flap? This dissertation includes two papers that examine the learning of phonetic flap during elementary school. In the first paper, flap production by ELLs in kindergarten whose first language was Spanish was examined. The allophonic status of flap …

Exploring The Relationship Between Online Comments Usage And Civic Engagement In South Korea, Kyung Han You, Misun Lee, Sohyun Oh Jun 2014

Exploring The Relationship Between Online Comments Usage And Civic Engagement In South Korea, Kyung Han You, Misun Lee, Sohyun Oh

Asia-Pacific Social Science Review

Using logistic and hierarchical regression analysis (N=798), the present study explored the relationship between civic participation and daet-geul, the online comments posted under online news articles as well as comments underneath other comments. Our analyses showed that individuals’ online media use (two types of online news use and online community use) principally predicted two types of daet-geul behavior. Also, writing daet-geul behavior increased the level of individuals’ community participation, whereas reading daet-geul has no effect on either political participation or community participation. The results also indicated that civic attitudes (trust in community, trust in individuals, and tolerance) significantly enhanced civic …

Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice

Community health workers (CHWs) make unique and important contributions to society. They serve as patient advocates, educators, and navigators in our health care system and a growing body of research indicates that they play an important role in the effective delivery of prevention and treatment services in underserved communities. CHWs also serve as informal community leaders and advocates for organizational and community change, providing valuable insiders' insights about health promotion and the interrelatedness of individuals, their community, its institutions, and the surrounding environment. Accion Para La Salud or Action for Health (Accion) is a CDC-funded community based participatory research (CBPR) …

Paradise Always Already Lost: Myth, Memory, And Matter In English Literature, Elizabeth Stuart Angello Jun 2014

Paradise Always Already Lost: Myth, Memory, And Matter In English Literature, Elizabeth Stuart Angello

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation follows a collection of agentive objects around and through the networks of humans and nonhumans in four disparate works of English literature: the Anglo-Saxon poem The Dream of the Rood, William Shakespeare's narrative poem The Rape of Lucrece, Thomas Hardy's novel The Woodlanders, and Philip Pullman's trilogy His Dark Materials. Applying the emergent discourses of object-oriented analyses, I posit the need for a critique that considers literary objects not as textual versions of real-world objects but as constructs of human imagination. What happens when we treat nonhuman or inanimate objects in literature as full …

In The (Radical) Pursuit Of Self-Care: Feminist Participatory Action Research With Victim Advocates, Robyn L. Homer Jun 2014

In The (Radical) Pursuit Of Self-Care: Feminist Participatory Action Research With Victim Advocates, Robyn L. Homer

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Despite victim advocates' missions of helping survivors of abuse, advocacy work takes a toll on workers. Advocates perform a multitude of tasks in their jobs including care work, emotional labor, and empowerment counseling which may subject them to consequences such as burnout, compassion fatigue, and compassion satisfaction. As such, this thesis details the work I conducted with the Butterfly Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault agency shelter advocates. The purpose of my thesis was to (1) document and review advocates' self-identified work-related needs and to (2) co-construct an educational intervention with the advocates using feminist participatory action research that would help …

Beauty As An Action Of Art: From The Aspect Of Aesthetics Of Life, Baogui Zhang Jun 2014

Beauty As An Action Of Art: From The Aspect Of Aesthetics Of Life, Baogui Zhang

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

There are two ideas about the legitimacy of aesthetics as a discipline. Aesthetics of Elimination claims that beauty is an a prior super-concept which, absent of a corresponding super-reality, falls into the abyss of metaphysical essentialism. Hence, aesthetics is not a legitimate discipline. Metaphysical Aesthetics holds that beauty should be interpreted through Kantian purposiveness of aesthetics and claims the legitimacy of the discipline of aesthetics in its ideal-confirming value. This paper argues that metaphysical aesthetics, due to its theoretically self-enclosed nature, cannot allow aesthetic activities to take on realistic transcendent value. Aesthetics of Elimination, however, has its own major problem. …

Cognitive Mapping And The Adventures Of The Postmodern, Kellner Douglas Jun 2014

Cognitive Mapping And The Adventures Of The Postmodern, Kellner Douglas

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

During the 1980s and 1990s, debates about the differences between modernity and postmodernity as historical epochs; modernism and postmodernism in the arts; and wars between modern and postmodern theory defined key theoretical problematics in intellectualized spaces of the West, like the University. Fredric Jameson was one of the initiators of debates over the postmodern, and introduced the concept of cognitive mapping to describe theoretical accounts of the contemporary moment. I discuss conceptions of theory and mapping in the modern and postmodern debates and sort out appropriate uses of the discourse of the postmodern, and the usefulness of the postmodern turn …

Verbal Image And Image-Idea: A Divide Of Semiotic Interpretation Of Poetry, Xinshi Li Jun 2014

Verbal Image And Image-Idea: A Divide Of Semiotic Interpretation Of Poetry, Xinshi Li

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

This paper starts from the perspective of semiotic poetics and by introducing the poetic term "verbal image" and re-interpreting the traditional term "yi xiang" (image-idea), it tries to clarify the relationship between language, verbal image and image-idea in poetics. Verbal image and image-idea can be distinguished for the different natures of their symbolic objects. Verbal Image can be divided into physical verbal image and transferred verbal image. The combination of meta-language and connotative signification can illustrate the formation mechanism of verbal image. The difference in language use, aesthetic principle, and the definition of poetry between the modern and the classical …

Coming Home Hybrid: Returned Sojourner Identity In Everyday Life, Jon Benjamin Mcnair Jun 2014

Coming Home Hybrid: Returned Sojourner Identity In Everyday Life, Jon Benjamin Mcnair

Theses and Dissertations

Sojourns, or extended periods of time during which people travel and live abroad with the intention of returning to their home countries, are becoming ever more normal parts of the human experience around the globe. In the US, sojourners who travel as foreign aid workers, corporate employees, missionaries, educators, and military personnel and dependents, among others, make up an increasingly broad spectrum of the population. The experience of living abroad is often necessarily accompanied by some sort of identity change that affects how well one integrates into one's host culture (and, conversely, rejecting local customs and norms affects one's potential …

Italian Art In Yugoslavia From 1961 To 1967: An Overlooked Chronicle, Giovanni Rubino Jun 2014

Italian Art In Yugoslavia From 1961 To 1967: An Overlooked Chronicle, Giovanni Rubino

Artl@s Bulletin

In the 1950s and 1960s, the relationship between Italy and the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia improved despite the Cold War. For the Italian artists involved in the New Tendencies, this new situation provided opportunities for recognition as an alternative to Art Informel, the dominant style in the international art market. Getulio Alviani, Enzo Mari and Eugenio Carmi, are three of the key Italian artists in this period who exhibited in Yugoslavian museums and galleries. Using new archival material, this paper sheds light on a unique postwar revival of Constructivism within a peripheral artist network far from New York and …

To Each His Own Reality: How The Analysis Of Artistic Exchanges In Cold War Europe Challenges Categories, Mathilde Arnoux Jun 2014

To Each His Own Reality: How The Analysis Of Artistic Exchanges In Cold War Europe Challenges Categories, Mathilde Arnoux

Artl@s Bulletin

How to reconstruct artistic relationships among four European countries, situated on both sides of the Iron Curtain, during the period that commenced post-Stalin and lasted until the fall of the Berlin Wall? This is one of the questions that faces the research program To Each His Own Reality: The notion of the real in the art of France, West Germany, East Germany and Poland between 1960 and 1989, which was initiated in January 2011. The paper discusses syntheses of the questions that the research team is facing, descriptions of its methodology, an analysis of preliminary results and what they allow …

Ontosoar: Using Language To Find Genealogy Facts, Peter Lindes Jun 2014

Ontosoar: Using Language To Find Genealogy Facts, Peter Lindes

Theses and Dissertations

There is a need to have an automated system that can read family history books or other historical texts and extract as many genealogy facts as possible from them. Embley and others have applied traditional information extraction techniques to this problem in a system called OntoES with a reasonable amount of success. In parallel much linguistic theory has been developed in the past decades, and Lonsdale and others have built computational embodiments of some of these theories using Soar. In this thesis we introduce a system called OntoSoar which combines the Link Grammar Parser using a grammar customized for family …

La Recuperación Del Sujeto A Través De Los Personajes Femeninos En Tres Novelas Españolas Contemporáneas Escritas Por Mujeres, Paloma Pérez Valdés Jun 2014

La Recuperación Del Sujeto A Través De Los Personajes Femeninos En Tres Novelas Españolas Contemporáneas Escritas Por Mujeres, Paloma Pérez Valdés

Conference Papers

Assisting Coordination During Crisis: A Domain Ontology Based Approach To Infer Resource Needs From Tweets, Shreyansh Bhatt, Hemant Purohit, Andrew J. Hampton, Valerie L. Shalin, Amit P. Sheth, John Flach

Kno.e.sis Publications

Ubiquitous social media during crises provides citizen reports on the situation, needs and supplies. Previous research extracts resource needs directly from the text (e.g. "Power cut to Coney Island and Brighton beach" indicates a power need). This approach assumes that citizens derive and write about specific needs from their observations, properly specified for the emergency response system, an assumption that is not consistent with general conversational behavior. In our study, Twitter messages (tweets) from Hurricane Sandy in 2012 clearly indicate power blackouts, but not their probable implications (e.g. loss of power to hospital life support systems). We use a domain …

Spatial Mapping Of Macular Pigment Optical Density And Its Relationship To Contrast Sensitivity And Glare Disability, Christopher Michael Putnam Jun 2014

Spatial Mapping Of Macular Pigment Optical Density And Its Relationship To Contrast Sensitivity And Glare Disability, Christopher Michael Putnam

Dissertations

This dissertation explored the relationship of the macular pigment optical density (MPOD) spatial profile with measures of contrast sensitivity (CS), glare disability (GD), relative glare disability (RGD) and intraocular light scatter. A novel device capable of measuring MPOD across the central 16 degrees of retina along 8 principle meridians using customized heterochromatic flicker photometry (cHFP) at eccentricities of 0, 2, 4, 6 and 8 degrees was built. MPOD was calculated as both discrete and integrated values at all measured retinal loci. CS was measured using vertical grating stimuli of 3, 6 and 9 cycles per degree (cpd) also presented at …

Parent Reasons For Enrollment At One Dual-Language Chinese Immersion Elementary School Program, Aaron W. Andersen

Theses and Dissertations

While foreign language immersion programs have been increasing in number and popularity throughout the United States, their growth in the state of Utah has been particularly dramatic. Utah contains more foreign language immersion programs than any other state and is home to one-fourth of the nation's elementary school Chinese immersion programs. This descriptive study explored the reasons why parents of children enrolled in Utah's Long Hill Elementary School Chinese Immersion program chose to enroll their child. Long Hill Elementary's Chinese Immersion program is 4 years old, with over 200 children enrolled across 4 grade levels. A household survey was developed, …

Supporting Complex Business Decisions With A Fuzzy Mobile Assistant, Tod Sedbrook, Charmayne Cullom Jun 2014

Supporting Complex Business Decisions With A Fuzzy Mobile Assistant, Tod Sedbrook, Charmayne Cullom

Communications of the IIMA

Researchers have recognized the importance of semantic expressiveness in understanding and solving complex problems and have identified a need to incorporate reasoning about uncertainty into decision tools that assist business managers. This study extends current approaches and develops new tools to allow artificial mobile assistants to manage rule-driven consultations by capturing and recommending problem solutions through natural language interfaces. A prototype assistant is described to support fuzzy knowledge representations and fuzzy rule-based consultations. The prototype’s application is implemented in a Windows 8 mobile device and applied in a case study of business outsourcing decisions.
