Making And Perceiving - Exploring The Degrees Of Engagement With The Aesthetic Process, Priska Falin, Petra Falin Jun 2014

Making And Perceiving - Exploring The Degrees Of Engagement With The Aesthetic Process, Priska Falin, Petra Falin

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Artistic practice and education build on a long tradition of aesthetic critique and problem solving. This tradition has later on influenced also practice-led and practice-based research approaches centering on the artistic process. Although these research approaches depend on the processes and objects that essentially have not only cognitive but aesthetic qualities, the role of the aesthetics in these research processes still lacks an analytical discussion in this context. In this article we explore the process aesthetics in the context of artistic, practice-led research. Namely, we examine the potential of the concept of aesthetic engagement as a framework for understanding and …

Ecological Perception: Seeing Systems, Joanna Boehnert Jun 2014

Ecological Perception: Seeing Systems, Joanna Boehnert

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Graphic designers have the unique ability to make hidden ecological processes visible by revealing relationships, patterns and dynamics in complex socio-ecological systems. This paper describes how communication design can support relational perceptual practices and even nurture ecological perception. It presents specific methods to harness the latent potential of graphic design to communicate the context, comparisons, connections and causality. It proposes that aesthetics experiences can provoke deep perceptual insights supporting new ways of perceiving our relationship with the environment, our ecological context. In ways described in this paper, graphic design has the potential to nurture the ability to ‘see systems’ – …

Point Of View As Mediacy Of Information Visualization, Soojin Jun Jun 2014

Point Of View As Mediacy Of Information Visualization, Soojin Jun

DRS Biennial Conference Series

In recent decades, the importance of information visualization has greatly increased in our daily lives, as it has provided a medium through which to analyze, explore, and express the meanings of datasets. Although much current research has been devoted to addressing the process and various types of visualization, information visualization still lacks the theoretical foundation as a discipline to delineate clearly the complex relationship among information, audiences, and context. The purpose of this paper is to investigate how to analyze the complex relationship among information, audience, purpose, and context. This paper presents a point of view framework that helps to …

Enhancing Visual Meaning: Measuring Visual Communication Design Effectiveness, David Craib:, Lorenzo Imbesi Jun 2014

Enhancing Visual Meaning: Measuring Visual Communication Design Effectiveness, David Craib:, Lorenzo Imbesi

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Visual messages are pervasive throughout modern societies, being continually disseminated and consumed through various channels, such as portable communication technologies, computers, television and print. Visual communication designers are tasked to create and produce highly perceivable and meaningful visual messages that populate these visual channels, but lack the science-based tools to ensure their designs are effective before they are disseminated. A set of visual communication design criteria and tools, aimed to increase design research effectiveness, will be derived through research focusing on three communicationrelated disciplines, including perception psychology, data visualization, and semiotics. These criteria and tools will then be applied to …

Envisioning A Better Design Education: How Language Can Invite Or Discourage Collaboration, Angela L. Dow, Susanna Kelly Engbers Jun 2014

Envisioning A Better Design Education: How Language Can Invite Or Discourage Collaboration, Angela L. Dow, Susanna Kelly Engbers

DRS Biennial Conference Series

The possibilities for collaboration among faculty teaching in various disciplines in an art and design college are often limited by the language we use to analyze, create, and discuss our work. Although there may, in fact, be a great deal of overlap, our language sometimes obscures rather than clarifies the possibility of productive and fruitful overlap. Our paper—itself the fruit of a collaboration between a professor of graphic design and a professor of English—discusses the ways in which various constituent groups at our college talk about visuals (e.g., logos, advertisements, interiors, photographs, illustrations, etc), noting the ways in which our …

Designed Research: Publishing Designs As Scholarship, Cheryl E. Ball Jun 2014

Designed Research: Publishing Designs As Scholarship, Cheryl E. Ball

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Scholarly publications are a primary means for researchers in any field to foster and support a shared discourse. As design researchers debate what forms their scholarship might take, this author suggests looking to examples from other, transdisciplinary academic fields that have long traditions in publishing designed research, or scholarship that enacts its argument through design. The author offers cases of several online journals in the sciences, arts, and humanities that publish designed research of various types, including one example from digital writing studies, which shares design researchers’ interests in collaborative, processbased, rhetorical practices. By considering alternative modes of publishing design …

Translating Smells Into Colors: A Proposal For Improve The Perception Of Perfume Packaging Design, Camila Assis Peres Silva, Clice Sanjar Mazzilli

DRS Biennial Conference Series

The present paper is an exploratory research within packaging design for perfumes. It discusses about the possibility of enhancing the experience of the user by associating the visual language with the smells. It is common sense in the design field the importance of user experience. Designers from different areas have been discussing a way of enhance it. One of the approaches which appear in this scenario is the term (multi)sensorial. It is believed in the contribution of this approach for the packaging design. It is interest of the authors the use of color as a language in design able to …

Emerging From The Shadows: Civil War, Human Rights, And Peacebuilding Among Peasants And Indigenous Peoples In Colombia And Peru In The Late 20th And Early 21st Centuries, Charles A. Flowerday Jun 2014

Emerging From The Shadows: Civil War, Human Rights, And Peacebuilding Among Peasants And Indigenous Peoples In Colombia And Peru In The Late 20th And Early 21st Centuries, Charles A. Flowerday

Department of Anthropology: Theses and Student Research

Peacebuilding in Colombia and Peru following their late-20th and early 21st century civil wars is a challenging proposition. In this study, it becomes necessary as indigenous peoples and peasants resist domination by extractive industries and governments in their thrall. Whether they protest nonviolently or rebel in arms, they are targeted for human-rights violations, especially murder, disappearance and displacement. The armed actors, state, insurgency, paramilitaries or drug traffickers, destroy civic institutions (local or regional government) and the civil (nonprofit) sector and replace them with their own authoritarian versions. Therefore, peacebuilding has emphasized rebuilding civic institutions, civil society and local …

The Accordion And The Deep Bowl Of Spaghetti: Eight Researchers' Experiences Of Using Ipa As A Methodology, Chris Wagstaff, Hyeseung Jeong, Maeve Nolan, Tony Wilson, Julie Tweedlie, Elly Phillips, Halia Senu, Fiona Holland

The Qualitative Report

Since 1996 Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) has grown rapidly and been applied in areas outside its initial “home” of health psychology. However, explorations of its application from a researcher's perspective are scarce. This paper provides reflections on the experiences of eight individual researchers using IPA in diverse disciplinary fields and cultures. The research studies were conducted in the USA, Malaysia, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland and the UK by researchers with backgrounds in business management, consumer behaviour, mental health nursing, nurse education, applied linguistics, clinical psychology, health and education. They variously explored media awareness, employee commitment, disengagement from mental health services, …

Teaching To The Test: A Pragmatic Approach To Teaching Logic, Seth C. Vannatta Jun 2014

Teaching To The Test: A Pragmatic Approach To Teaching Logic, Seth C. Vannatta

Education and Culture

The proper goal of an introductory logic course, teaching critical thinking, is best achieved by maintaining the principle of continuity between student experiences and the curriculum. To demonstrate this I explain Dewey’s naturalistic approach to logic and the process of inquiry, one which presents the elements of traditional logic in the context of student experiences. I offer an example of a logic textbook which models the maintenance of the principle of continuity I advocate. Last, I advocate a pluralistic and experimental approach to accomplish this, including methods that rely on the role of the body in learning and reasoning.

Unity Vs. Uniformity: The Influence Of Ziya Gökalp And John Dewey On The Education System Of The Republic Of Turkey, Rasit Celik Jun 2014

Unity Vs. Uniformity: The Influence Of Ziya Gökalp And John Dewey On The Education System Of The Republic Of Turkey, Rasit Celik

Education and Culture

Creating a democratic nation-state and sustaining its progress was seen by the founders of the Republic of Turkey as necessary to achieving the goal of becoming a distinguished member among developed civilizations. The founders conceived of education as a main instrument in disseminating this new ideology and ensuring the emergence of a culture of democracy in Turkish society. Accordingly, establishing a new education system was a primary consideration during the early years of the Republic. Scholars, looking at the issue from diverse perspectives, have routinely revealed the influence of John Dewey’s report on Turkish education and discussed how his recommendations …

Literature Of Return: Back To Africa, Belonging, And Modernity, David Borman Jun 2014

Literature Of Return: Back To Africa, Belonging, And Modernity, David Borman

Open Access Dissertations

This dissertation claims that narratives of return to Africa act as powerful tools for rethinking the contemporary neoliberal moment and the terms upon which African-based affiliations are formed. “The African diaspora” has been a powerful governing principle for explaining the cultural connections among people of African descent around the globe. But the narratives of return in this dissertation speak to the limits of a diaspora concept, which often frames the African continent as a place of cultural origins and templates that exists firmly in the past. I read fiction and life writing from Africa, North America, and Great Britain alongside …

Examining The Role Of Religion In Education And The Effect On Internal Conflict, Christopher Dewayne Harris Jun 2014

Examining The Role Of Religion In Education And The Effect On Internal Conflict, Christopher Dewayne Harris

Student Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the role of religion in education in an attempt to determine whether it has a pacifying or exacerbating effect on internal conflict. Using data from the Religion and State (RAS) project as well as the International Country Risk Guide, several hypotheses regarding the effect of religious education are tested to examine the relationship between religious education and religious and ethnic tensions and resulting incidences of conflict. Employing cross-sectional times-series analysis, I find that an vigilant emphasis on religious education, particularly in the developing world, has a pacifying effect on ethno-religious violence, even when ethno-religious tensions persist. Lastly, …

Dynamic Written Corrective Feedback: Achieving Manageability, Angela Shelley Jun 2014

Dynamic Written Corrective Feedback: Achieving Manageability, Angela Shelley

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis provides reflections on a practice of corrective feedback known as dynamic Written Corrective Feedback (dynamic WCF). First addressing 20 years of concerns regarding the highly-debated topic of feedback in second language (L2) writing and then outlining dynamic WCF as a pedagogical practice founded on four principles, the thesis finally introduces a recently developed handbook for instructors. This handbook presents the four foundational principles of dynamic WCF (timeliness, manageability, meaningfulness, and constancy) to first-time instructors and supports the implementation of dynamic WCF to optimize benefit and enhance manageability in written corrective feedback.

The Role Of Multicultural Competence, Privilege, Attributions, And Team Support In Predicting Positive Youth Mentor Outcomes, Rachael Leigh Suffrin Jun 2014

The Role Of Multicultural Competence, Privilege, Attributions, And Team Support In Predicting Positive Youth Mentor Outcomes, Rachael Leigh Suffrin

College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations

In the current study we use Bronfenbrenner’s (1979) ecological theory to guide an inquiry into how the social environment surrounding mentors’ matters in regards to mentor outcomes of satisfaction, retention, and extra-role pro-social behavior (i.e., mentors willingness to go above and beyond for their mentee or the mentoring program). Mentors are sampled from mentoring organizations across the United States. Drawing from Bronfenbrenner’s ecological theory (1979), we examine mentors embedded in distinct micro- and macrosystems. At the microsystem level we explore how the relationship between the mentor and the (a) mentee, (b) mentees’ family, and (c) the mentoring team may predict …

Immigrants, Roma And Sinti Unveil The “National” In Italian Identity, Francesco Melfi Jun 2014

Immigrants, Roma And Sinti Unveil The “National” In Italian Identity, Francesco Melfi

Cultural Encounters, Conflicts, and Resolutions

This essay picks up a few threads in the ongoing debate on national identity in Italy. Immigration and the intertwining of cultures locally have stretched the contours of the nation state to a breaking point. As a result, the social self has become a sharply contested terrain between those who want to install a symbolic electronic fence around an imagined fatherland and those who want a more inclusive nation at home in a global world. After discussing the views of Amin Maalouf (2000), Alessandro Dal Lago (2009), Abdelmalek Sayad (1999) and Patrick Manning (2005) on national identity and migration in …

More Than A Tribesman: The New African Diasporan Identity, Stephen M. Magu Jun 2014

More Than A Tribesman: The New African Diasporan Identity, Stephen M. Magu

Cultural Encounters, Conflicts, and Resolutions

Current global levels of immigration stand at about 300 million persons; of these, IFAD estimates that 30 million Africans are in the Diaspora. The contributions of diasporic Africans to their communities and to the cultural experiences of the United States are multimodal. To their domiciles, they contribute economically, empowering their families to become more active and less dependent on the state, while transmitting ideas about democracy and better government. At the same time, they contribute to their adopted homelands through social and cultural activities, cultural festivals and other indicators of cultural connectedness to their motherlands. The African diaspora of necessity …

The Body As Politic: Education And The Performance Art Of Guillermo Gómez-Peña, Dana Cole Jun 2014

The Body As Politic: Education And The Performance Art Of Guillermo Gómez-Peña, Dana Cole

Cultural Encounters, Conflicts, and Resolutions

Art has been used as a tool in many fields as a method to tap into different ways of knowing and learning. It promotes creativity and individual expression by encouraging innovation and by opening up possibilities to different ways of expressing and experiencing. My work looks at the performance art of Guillermo Gómez-Peña as a form of public pedagogy using a/r/tography, an arts-based methodology, to illuminate way art it can be used to enhance the learning experience. This article examine the in-between spaces created in Gómez-Peña’s work as epistemological borderzones underscoring how borders come together in heterogeneity, contradiction, and flux …

Alternative Ireland: Modernism And Urban Space In Twentieth-Century Irish Literature, Kurt Patrick Voss-Hoynes Jun 2014

Alternative Ireland: Modernism And Urban Space In Twentieth-Century Irish Literature, Kurt Patrick Voss-Hoynes

Open Access Dissertations

Twentieth-century urban literature of Dublin and Belfast presents Ireland’s alternative modernity as one that is ecumenical, heterogeneous, unique, and autonomous. In “Alternative Ireland: Modernism and Urban Space in Twentieth-Century Irish Literature,” I look to modernism, rather than postmodernism, as the aesthetic mode by which twentieth-century Irish novelists sought to re-think contemporary Ireland’s relationship to history and imagine a modern Ireland alternative to either imperial or provincial modernity. I argue that an alternative Irish modernity articulates a mass culture that not only rejects the mythological past but also recognizes cultural, social, and political possibilities that have been silenced in a traditional …

High Risk, High Yield: Embodied Facilitation For Racial Justice In Writing Workshops Across The Disciplines, Beth Godbee, Jasmine Kar Tang

English Faculty Research and Publications

If one of the lifelines of WAC involves facilitating workshops with/for faculty, TAs, tutors, and others across campus, then how can we better attend to issues of racial diversity? This interactive session looks at the intersection of the writing center pedagogies and critical race studies. Featuring reflection on a series of movement-based workshops, the co-authors argue for a high-risk, high-yield model of facilitation, one that requires awareness of social locations, identities, and histories.

Connecting Teaching Practice To Student Efficacy In Undergraduate Mathematics, Sandra Becker Jun 2014

Connecting Teaching Practice To Student Efficacy In Undergraduate Mathematics, Sandra Becker

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Academic efficacy plays a critical role in student success in math learning at all levels due to its impact on persistence, motivation, and academic performance. This research aimed to connect student efficacy with key aspects of the instructional environment in six undergraduate math classes. Student surveys indicated significant differences in mean efficacy between classes, as well as significant differences in student perceptions of teacher behavior between the efficacy groups. Findings from observations of the classes revealed that key aspects of the instructional discourse varied by efficacy group. Instructors in higher efficacy classes tended to have more personal connections with students …

The Subjection Of Authority And Death Through Humor: Carnivalesque, Incongruity, And Absurdism In Cormac Mccarthy's Blood Meridian And No Country For Old Men, Ruth Ellen Covington Jun 2014

The Subjection Of Authority And Death Through Humor: Carnivalesque, Incongruity, And Absurdism In Cormac Mccarthy's Blood Meridian And No Country For Old Men, Ruth Ellen Covington

Theses and Dissertations

Cormac McCarthy's representation of the comic theories of the carnivalesque, incongruity, and absurdism by the antagonists of Blood Meridian and No Country for Old Men demonstrates the unique and ostensible power of humor over (or at least, its awareness of and reconciliation to the absurdity of) death; it also emphasizes the supreme power and influence of humor as a means for destroying other institutions and philosophies which claim knowledge or authority but fail to sustain individuals in times of crisis. This makes humor a formidable factor in determining and justifying the outcome of human interactions and in defining the strengths …

Early Back-To-Africa Migration Into The Horn Of Africa, Jason A. Hodgson, Connie J. Mulligan, Ali Al-Meeri, Ryan L. Raaum Jun 2014

Early Back-To-Africa Migration Into The Horn Of Africa, Jason A. Hodgson, Connie J. Mulligan, Ali Al-Meeri, Ryan L. Raaum

Publications and Research

Genetic studies have identified substantial non-African admixture in the Horn of Africa (HOA). In the most recent genomic studies, this non-African ancestry has been attributed to admixture with Middle Eastern populations during the last few thousand years. However, mitochondrial and Y chromosome data are suggestive of earlier episodes of admixture. To investigate this further, we generated new genome-wide SNP data for a Yemeni population sample and merged these new data with published genome-wide genetic data from the HOA and a broad selection of surrounding populations. We used multidimensional scaling and ADMIXTURE methods in an exploratory data analysis to develop hypotheses …
