Multiple Perspectives On Parent Involvement For Middle School Students Receiving Special Education Services, Erin Blatz Jul 2014

Multiple Perspectives On Parent Involvement For Middle School Students Receiving Special Education Services, Erin Blatz

Open Access Dissertations

Parent involvement is recognized as an important factor in the education of students receiving special education services. Research indicates that parents of students with disabilities often experience barriers to their participation in their children’s education, and that the efforts put forth by school personnel to engage these parents may be insufficient. Using data collected as part of a larger study of parents’ and professionals’ perceptions related to schools’ engagement efforts, this study compared the perspectives of 25 parents and 26 professionals from five middle schools located in four school districts in a large southeastern state. The analysis of data aggregated …

Shape-Shifting Creole Identities: Representations Of Creole Figures In Nineteenth-Century Anglophone Transatlantic Literature, Claudia Amadori Jul 2014

Shape-Shifting Creole Identities: Representations Of Creole Figures In Nineteenth-Century Anglophone Transatlantic Literature, Claudia Amadori

Open Access Dissertations

This study of nineteenth-century American, British, and Caribbean texts examines the historical and geographical shifts in literary depictions of West Indian Creoles, who were the offspring of colonizers and/or slaves in the Americas, and focuses on the relationship between literature and Creole identity formation. The presence of Creoles in literature demonstrates, on the one hand, the development of a Creole consciousness in texts by West Indian authors written from a Creole point of view. On the other hand, literary Creoles in British and post-Independence American novels attest to the importance of the West Indies within the Atlantic world, although Creoles …

High School Teachers' Perceptions Of Data Driven Decision Making Within A Response To Intervention Framework, Benikia Kressler Jul 2014

High School Teachers' Perceptions Of Data Driven Decision Making Within A Response To Intervention Framework, Benikia Kressler

Open Access Dissertations

A general education initiative supported by IDEA (2004), Response to Intervention (RtI) holds promise for improving the academic achievement of at-risk students through evidence-based instruction and data driven decision making (DDDM). However, most of the research on RtI has been conducted within elementary settings. Thus, this study examined high school teachers’ perceptions of DDDM for improving academic performance of at-risk high school youth within an RtI framework. Using qualitative methods consisting of interviews and field observations of six high school teachers implementing RtI in two Title 1 high schools, constant comparison methods of data were conducted. From this data, three …

A Contrastive Corpus Analysis Between Modern Art Criticism And Photography Criticism For Curriculum Development In Art Esp, Arthur Lau Hullender

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The field of ESP encompasses a number of areas. In the developing area of English for Art Purposes or Art ESP, there is almost no material in publication for Art schools and other programs to use. This dissertation addresses the need for material in this field by using contrastive corpus analysis to identify suitable material for this subject and then discusses how contrastive analysis software can also be used to help create content in the form of lesson plans and curriculum material. This study focuses on the unique language features of modern art criticism and photography criticism by looking at …

Learning To Generate Understandable Animations Of American Sign Language, Matt Huenerfauth Jul 2014

Learning To Generate Understandable Animations Of American Sign Language, Matt Huenerfauth

Annual Effective Access Technology Conference

Motivations & Methods - Standardized testing has revealed that many deaf adults in the U.S. have lower levels of English literacy; providing American Sign Language (ASL) on websites can make information more accessible. Unfortunately, video recordings of human signers are difficult to update when information changes, and there is no way to support just-in-time generation of web content from a query.

Programmable Sound Detection, Joseph S. Stanislow, Gary W. Behm

Annual Effective Access Technology Conference

Abstract - The development of the project is to design, develop and build a notification device that will allow deaf/hard-of-hearing (DHH) people to be notified when a device such as toaster, microwave oven, smoke alarm, door bell or instruments produce sounds. The name of the project is “Programmable Sound Detection (PSD)”. The function is to record a specified sound of the device, store it in Programmable Sound Detection Device (PSD) and notify a person when the sound is activated. PSD stores several different audible sounds of different devices. Based on which specified audible sound from the device, the PSD can …

Learning To Generate Understandable Animations Of American Sign Language, Matt Huenerfauth

Annual Effective Access Technology Conference

Abstract - Standardized testing has revealed that many deaf adults in the U.S. have lower levels of written English literacy; providing American Sign Language (ASL) on websites can make information and services more accessible. Unfortunately, video recordings of human signers are difficult to update when information changes, and there is no way to support just-in-time generation of web content from a query. Software is needed that can automatically synthesize understandable animations of a virtual human performing ASL, based on an easy-to-update script as input. The challenge is for this software to select the details of such animations so that they …

Looking At The Multiple Meanings Of Numeracy, Quantitative Literacy, And Quantitative Reasoning, H. L. Vacher Jul 2014

Looking At The Multiple Meanings Of Numeracy, Quantitative Literacy, And Quantitative Reasoning, H. L. Vacher

Numeracy

The subject of this journal goes by a variety of names: numeracy, quantitative literacy, and quantitative reasoning. Some authors use the terms interchangeably. Others see distinctions between them. Study of psycholinguistic and ontological concepts laid out in the literature of WordNet and familiarity with the papers in this journal suggests a vocabulary matrix consisting of four rows (word senses) and three columns (word forms, namely numeracy, QL, and QR). The four word senses correspond to four sets of synonyms: {numeracy}, {numeracy, QL}, {QL, QR}, and {numeracy, QL, QR}. Each of the word forms is polysemous: “numeracy” points to the first, …

Observations On The Performative Force Of The Qyama And The Ihidaye, And Its Pertinancy Today, C. A. Chase Jul 2014

Observations On The Performative Force Of The Qyama And The Ihidaye, And Its Pertinancy Today, C. A. Chase

School of Theology and Seminary Graduate Papers/Theses

Using contemporary social and art theory, with particular emphasis on the notion of performative, this paper examines the historical and theological context of a unique social and ecclesial phenomenon in 4th century Syria—the Sons and Daughters of the Covenant. By observing these committed laity as a ‘living performance,’ an exploration of the identity of the faithful, both severally and as a community, may be undertaken. This paper focuses on the relation of such a performative to notions of Christology and anthropology, with an eye towards today’s laity and their seeking for identity in a complex world of competing shifting …

Structural Differentiation Of Graphs Using Hosoya-Based Indices, Matthias Dehmer, Abbe Mowshowitz, Yongtang Shi Jul 2014

Structural Differentiation Of Graphs Using Hosoya-Based Indices, Matthias Dehmer, Abbe Mowshowitz, Yongtang Shi

Publications and Research

In this paper, we introduce the Hosoya-Spectral indices and the Hosoya information content of a graph. The first measure combines structural information captured by partial Hosoya polynomials and graph spectra. The latter is a graph entropy measure which is based on blocks consisting of vertices with the same partial Hosoya polynomial. We evaluate the discrimination power of these quantities by interpreting numerical results.

Funny Girls: A Study Of The Graciosa In Four Early Modern Plays, Dolores Ruiz-Fabrega Jul 2014

Funny Girls: A Study Of The Graciosa In Four Early Modern Plays, Dolores Ruiz-Fabrega

Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

This study centers on the graciosa, the female stock comic figure of early modern Spanish theater. It focuses on the comical discourse of this character in order to underscore five basic reasons that prove that she is a figure of this theater that requires more scholarly focus. The graciosas that are analyzed are: Celia and Clara from Lope de Vegas La dama boba (1613), Isabel from Calderón de la Barca's La dama duende (1629), Flora from Francisco Rojas Zorrilla's Primero es la honra que el gusto (prior to 1648) and Irene from Agustín Moreto's La fuerza de la ley (1651). …

A Differential Item Functioning Analysis Of The New Mexico English Language Proficiency Assessment, Walter Gilmore Jul 2014

A Differential Item Functioning Analysis Of The New Mexico English Language Proficiency Assessment, Walter Gilmore

Individual, Family, and Community Education ETDs

English language proficiency assessments are currently in use by the 50 states (Wolf, Farnsworth, & Herman, 2008). Unfortunately, validations studies seldom address the effects of home languages on the use and interpretation of these assessments. If this step is overlooked, the assessment may include items that unfairly position one group of home language scores over another group. An omission of home languages was the case for the New Mexico English Language Proficiency Assessment (NMELPA) (Harcourt Assessment, Inc., 2006, 2007). For this reason, the NMELPA was investigated for group differences between those with first language origins in Spanish and Navajo, the …

The Un-Exceptional Bomb: Settler Nuclearism, Feminism, And Atomic Tourism In New Mexico, Eileen Clare Shaughnessy Jul 2014

The Un-Exceptional Bomb: Settler Nuclearism, Feminism, And Atomic Tourism In New Mexico, Eileen Clare Shaughnessy

American Studies ETDs

New Mexico's atomic tourism acts to render the atomic bomb simultaneously so exceptional that it is viewed as the pinnacle of Western intelligence, and yet also so un-exceptional that it is banal, as typified by kitschy atomic souvenirs. A primary way in which New Mexico's atomic tourist sites accomplish this paradoxical narrative is through gendered and racialized discourses in exhibits, gift shops, and on-site narratives. The racialized trope of the "vanishing Native" functions in these spaces to shore up the colonialist progress narrative in which white Western science and Manifest Destiny inevitably result in the creation of the "exceptional" bomb …

Changes In Student Proving Skills And Attitudes Following A Cooperative Learning Seminar, Martha Byrne Jul 2014

Changes In Student Proving Skills And Attitudes Following A Cooperative Learning Seminar, Martha Byrne

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

This dissertation details research studies designed to explore undergraduate math students beliefs and attitudes about mathematical proof, ability to compose valid proofs, and ability to read and validate purported proofs written by other students. In two studies, a cohort of seminar participants were assessed twice on their attitudes and beliefs about mathematical proof, their ability to compose proofs, and their ability to validate arguments. Between assessments, these participants worked on carefully crafted problem sets in a Cooperative Learning environment. In each study, a cohort of comparison participants took both assessments but did not engage in structured, cooperative work in the …

Pathologizing And Criminalizing Intoxication: Addiction, Psychoactive Drugs, And The Ideological Underpinnings Of The War On Drugs, David Korostyshevsky Jul 2014

Pathologizing And Criminalizing Intoxication: Addiction, Psychoactive Drugs, And The Ideological Underpinnings Of The War On Drugs, David Korostyshevsky

History ETDs

Since the Enlightenment, Anglo-American temperance thinkers—who were usually clergymen and physicians—have expressed broader concerns about intoxication and addiction with rhetoric that simultaneously pathologized and criminalized the unsanctioned use of psychoactive substances. During the first half of the eighteenth century, a period known as the Gin Craze, rising levels of urban drunkenness in England came under the sustained gaze of temperance-minded doctors and churchmen, who used a shared language of contagion, disease, and slavery to problematize intoxication simultaneously as a medical and criminal condition. Building on Enlightenment English temperance thought, which was transferred into the United States by physician Benjamin Rush, …

An Investigation Of Alternative Language Services (Als) Received By English Language Learners (Ells) Identified With A Disability, Christine Romero Jul 2014

An Investigation Of Alternative Language Services (Als) Received By English Language Learners (Ells) Identified With A Disability, Christine Romero

Special Education ETDs

The identification of and provision of ALS to ELLs identified with a disability was compared to that of their ELL peers without an identified disability. In addition, I conducted a review of the types of ALS provided. I approached this study from the perspective of the social construction of disability and utilized a quantitative, causal-comparative research design. I utilized the Statistical Analysis System (SAS) software for data analysis, along with Pearson's chi-square test of independence (χ2), and Fisher’s exact test with a significance level (p-value of ≤ 0.01) to test null hypothesis. In addition, the risk index and the composition …

Out Of Time: Temporal Colonization And The Writing Of Mexican American Subjectivity, Erin Murrah-Mandril Jul 2014

Out Of Time: Temporal Colonization And The Writing Of Mexican American Subjectivity, Erin Murrah-Mandril

English Language and Literature ETDs

This dissertation studies the ways that Mexican Americans experienced time as a colonizing force in the US Southwest between 1848 and 1940. I argue that Mexican American writing of this period exposes oppressive iterations of time within US modernity and often points toward possibilities of decolonizing time. The project focuses on political and economic constructions of US progress, which denied Mexican Americans presence within US temporal imaginings. My analysis moves from material to ideological temporal constructions as I analyze forms of time concerning wage labor, railroad operations, investment capitalism, judicial processes, congressional proceedings, Manifest Destiny, commodity fetishism, intellectual production, historical …

The Impact Of State Certification Of Community Health Workers On Team Climate Among Registered Nurses In The United States, Mark Siemon Jul 2014

The Impact Of State Certification Of Community Health Workers On Team Climate Among Registered Nurses In The United States, Mark Siemon

Nursing ETDs

A number of states have adopted certification programs for community health workers (CHWs) to increase oversight, allow for direct funding, and improve recognition of CHWs as members of the health care team. More states are considering CHW certification programs to increase the use of CHWs by health care organizations with the hopes of improving health outcomes and decreasing health disparities. There has been little research into the impact of state CHW certification on the adoption and dissemination of CHWs into the existing health care system. This study examined the impact of state CHW certification on the perceptions of team climate …

Collaborating On Web 2.0 Technologies: The Best-Fit Model For The Behavioral Intentions Of Preservice Teachers, Lisa Jane Amundson

Dissertations

Professional collaborative partnerships among teachers are essential in delivering appropriate services, in an inclusive classroom for students with disabilities. Web 2.0 technologies are new, yet largely unexamined, tools that may be used to facilitate collaborative partnerships. Teacher preparation programs are currently attempting to understand the behavioral intention of preservice teachers on these new technologies. A total of 590 preservice teachers participated in this study and reported their current use, perceived benefits, and behavioral intentions on Web 2.0 technologies. The Decomposed Theory of Planned Behavior (DTPB) was used as a theoretical framework to help guide the study and identify possible behavior …

Comparing Speech Movements In Different Types Of Noise, Sarah Jane Scott Jul 2014

Comparing Speech Movements In Different Types Of Noise, Sarah Jane Scott

Theses and Dissertations

This study examined the impact of several noise conditions on speech articulator movements during a sentence repetition task. Sixty participants in three age groups ranging from 20 to 70 repeated a sentence under five noise conditions. Lower lip movements during production of a target sentence were used to compute the spatiotemporal index (STI). It was hypothesized that STI would be lower (indicating greater stability) in the silent baseline condition. There were changes in speech production under several of the noise conditions. The duration for the 1-talker condition was significantly shorter when compared to the silent condition, which could be due …
