On The Composite-Sign Literary Text And The Layers Of Sign In The Text, Xiaoxi Shan Jul 2014

On The Composite-Sign Literary Text And The Layers Of Sign In The Text, Xiaoxi Shan

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Literary text of composite sign is composed with different types of signs such as linguistic sign, body sign, image sign, audio sign and so on, among which linguistic sign functions as the keynote, defining the identity of a text as a form of verbal art. Oral literature before written language takes the form of verbal-body composite text or the verbal-body-music composite text. The picture-word literary texts in ancient Chinese, picture story books in Western and Japanese are important forms of word-picture composite texts, while word-image-sound composite text is the major type of digital literature today. Composite sign in literary texts …

The Application Of Referent In Western Marxist Critical Theory And Its Significance, Bi Zhang Jul 2014

The Application Of Referent In Western Marxist Critical Theory And Its Significance, Bi Zhang

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

The application of the semiotic concept of referent in Western Marxist critical theory achieves the purpose of recognizing and analyzing the social reality represented by referents, and it has also made up for the blind areas in the methodology of structuralist semiotics. Furthermore, the application has theoretically bridged the two methodological tradition of Anglo-American and Structuralism semiotics, and it also highlights the referent as an important issue in the study of semiotics, and therefore the application has made significant theoretical contribution to semiotics.

Mouse Models Of Neuroanatomical, Behavioral, And Genetic Correlates Of Language-Related Impairments: An Investigation Of Core Phenotypes., Dongnhu Truong Jul 2014

Mouse Models Of Neuroanatomical, Behavioral, And Genetic Correlates Of Language-Related Impairments: An Investigation Of Core Phenotypes., Dongnhu Truong

Doctoral Dissertations

The development of the brain is an immensely complicated process that is highly regulated by numerous genetic pathways. Disruption within any stage of this operation—from proliferation, to neuronal migration, to synaptogenesis—could ultimately lead to deleterious behavioral outcomes, ranging from severe intellectual disability and gross motor developmental delays to more subtle cognitive impairments such as language disability. It is therefore no surprise that neuroanatomical anomalies resulting from of altered cortical development are associated with a number of language related neurodevelopmental disorders such as specific language impairment (SLI), dyslexia, and autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Over the past decade, genetic association studies have …

The Death And The Revival Of The Author, Hajdu Péter Jul 2014

The Death And The Revival Of The Author, Hajdu Péter

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

The most influential trends in 20th-century literary criticism and theory of literature can be described as revolting against a both Romantic and positivist approach which focused on the person of the author rather than his or her literary product. Formalism, New Criticism, structuralism and post-structuralism denied any importance of the biographical author, and dealt with texts exclusively. After the Barthesian formulation of the death of the author (applauded by towering figures like Foucault or Derrida) the end of the 20th and even more the beginning of the 21st centuries have brought back the importance of the author. For some new …

Tolerance In The City: The Multilevel Effects Of Urban Environments On Permissive Attitudes, Christopher M. Huggins, Jeffrey S. Debies-Carl Jul 2014

Tolerance In The City: The Multilevel Effects Of Urban Environments On Permissive Attitudes, Christopher M. Huggins, Jeffrey S. Debies-Carl

Sociology Faculty Publications

Studies on urbanism often suggest a link between urbanites and increased tolerance. While most research supports this claim, it is hampered by several limitations: it focuses almost exclusively on the United States, it neglects classical arguments that urbanism is a macro-level as well as local phenomena, and it does not direct attention to the different mechanisms through which urbanism is believed to operate. In this paper, we reexamine the tolerance-producing capacity of urbanism by addressing these limitations. This study uses a large cross-national sample, multi-level modeling to examine urban factors at both the local and societal level, and two measures …

The Effects On Using Ipads In Teaching Sight Words To English Language Learners, Samantha Funaro

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research was to (a) examine the effects of using iPad technology to teach high frequency Dolch sight words, in terms of identification and application, to beginner English language learners (ELLs), and (b) evaluate satisfaction and motivation among participants in the use of iPads in sight word acquisition. The participants consisted of two fourth grade and one third grade English as a second language students (ESLs). A multiple baseline single subject design with AB phases was used. During the baseline, each participant's performance was assessed using flashcards and cloze sentences. Their scores were recorded. During the intervention, …

Mobile Learning For Communicative Language Teaching: An Exploration Of How Higher Education Language Instructors Design Communicative Mall Environments, Dorian Shavonne Bailey Brown Jul 2014

Mobile Learning For Communicative Language Teaching: An Exploration Of How Higher Education Language Instructors Design Communicative Mall Environments, Dorian Shavonne Bailey Brown

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The purpose of this study was to describe how higher education language instructors design mobile-assted language learning environments for communicative language teaching. As our focus in second language acquisition has moved toward a communicative approach, the media richness and communication savvy of mobile devices can plan a vital role in this new communicative goal. Offering authentic content and dialogue opportunities, language instructors can take advantage of these devices leading language learners to achieve true fluency in another language. While the opportunity for communicative language teaching with MALL is viable, how to best design MALL environments for this purpose is still …

A New Look At Clitics, Clitic Doubling, And Argument Ellipsis: Evidence From Slavic, Jelena Runic Jul 2014

A New Look At Clitics, Clitic Doubling, And Argument Ellipsis: Evidence From Slavic, Jelena Runic

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation explores the status of clitic pronouns by analyzing several morpho-syntactic and semantic phenomena, and by examining their implications. I analyze several peculiar restrictions on clitic doubling and other related cliticization phenomena in non-standard Serbian and Slovenian dialects, and explore their relevance for the general theories of clitic doubling. Additionally, I examine the availability of the full spectrum of clitic meanings in Slavic and Romance, and show that clitics in article-less Slavic languages exhibit the kind of semantic flexibility that is not found in article clitic languages (both Slavic and Romance). I then explore the implications of this finding …

Noun-Noun Compound Comprehension As Self-Organization: The Representation And Processing Dynamics Of Noun-Noun Compounds, Pyeong Whan Cho Jul 2014

Noun-Noun Compound Comprehension As Self-Organization: The Representation And Processing Dynamics Of Noun-Noun Compounds, Pyeong Whan Cho

Doctoral Dissertations

By noun-noun compound, we mean any combination of two nouns that native speakers of a language can understand. Native speakers can easily generate and understand novel, transparent compounds (e.g., mountain magazine), suggesting compositional processing. Relation-based theories of compound meaning (e.g., Levi, 1978) provide an explanation for this apparent productivity by assuming a set of semantic/thematic relations (e.g., ABOUT) that can bind two component nouns. Inspired by relation-based theories, we propose a self-organizing network model according to which (1) the meaning of a noun-noun compound M H (e.g., mountain magazine) corresponds to a tree-like constituent structure whose daughter nodes represent …

Three Essays On International Finance, Bhavik Rajesh Parikh Jul 2014

Three Essays On International Finance, Bhavik Rajesh Parikh

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

There are three essays in this dissertation. The first essay provides information regarding tax havens and its role in portfolio equity flows. For a sample of 70 countries average portfolio flows received from tax haven countries is higher than average flows received from non tax haven countries. When countries increase personal tax rates, portfolio equity flows from tax haven countries increases as compared to non tax haven countries. These effects are consistent for countries belonging to emerging, frontier and developed markets and whether a given country has high or low corporate governance. The second essay looks at the impact of …

Genetic Variability And Fruit Morphological Diversity In The Tomato Germplasm, Ramhari Thapa Jul 2014

Genetic Variability And Fruit Morphological Diversity In The Tomato Germplasm, Ramhari Thapa

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.), broadly divided into two varieties: Solanum lycopersicum var. lycopersicum (domesticated tomato) and the weedy Solanum lycopersicum var. cerasiforme (cherry tomato), is closely related to the wild tomato species Solanum pimpinellifolium. Studies show presence of a very low genetic diversity among tomato cultivars, which is estimated to be lower than 5% of that available in nature. With the estimation of such a low level of genetic variability in the germplasm, assessment of the extent and nature of the genetic variation in tomatoes would be important for breeding and genetic resource conservation programs. I used AFLP data to …

Second Language Teacher Education: The Development Of Pre-Service Teacher Cognitions About The Characteristics And Practices Of Effective Esl Instructors, Kenneth Geoffrey Richter

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

My dissertation explores the impact of second language teacher education on the development of the pedagogic beliefs held by student teachers enrolled in the University of Guanajuato’s Licenciatura en la Enseñanza de Inglés. Specifically, my research investigates the origins of these students’ pedagogic beliefs, the development of their beliefs over the course of the four-year language teacher program, and the convergence of their beliefs and professional practices. The current research can be described as a synchronic, exploratory-descriptive study based on a cross-sectional investigation of participant beliefs. Repertory grid interviews were used as the primary method of data collection. The repertory …

Using Writing Studio Pedagogy To Help Students Reclaim Their Disabilities And Sexualities In A High School Writers' Workshop, Matthew Kim Jul 2014

Using Writing Studio Pedagogy To Help Students Reclaim Their Disabilities And Sexualities In A High School Writers' Workshop, Matthew Kim

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation is an exploration into what students stand to gain from being mentored in terms of reclaiming their disabilities and sexualities. Writing studio pedagogy supports the following ideas: an understanding that composition is a social process and, therefore, must take place in a social environment, an acceptance of multiple composing tools, multiple problem-solving strategies, an acceptance that students possess many and different creative thinking processes, an awareness that spatial design matters for successful teaching and learning, and, finally, an understanding of writing as play. My primary research question is how can practicing writing studio pedagogy transform the writing classroom …

Introduction: Appreciating Difference, Barbara Lewis Jul 2014

Introduction: Appreciating Difference, Barbara Lewis

Trotter Review

Are we a narrative nation, imagined and connected mentally, tied by a common history of disruption if not by contiguous geography? Lorick-Wilmot suggests that the stories we tell offer the basis of mutual understanding across distance and cultures and generations. In a reconfigured mental Diasporic cartography, where is our citadel, our castle (not to be confused with what Europeans named as slave castles of Africa)? The remains and monuments built in this hemisphere by iron will and the drive to change yesterday, uprooting it from the ground of inequality, still stand on the highest hill in northern Haiti, reminding us …

Between Two Worlds: Stories Of The Second-Generation Black Caribbean Immigrant, Yndia S. Lorick-Wilmot Jul 2014

Between Two Worlds: Stories Of The Second-Generation Black Caribbean Immigrant, Yndia S. Lorick-Wilmot

Trotter Review

People have an endless fascination with character information since it helps us to predict the behavior of those we interact with (King, Rumbaugh, and Savage-Rumbaugh 1999). Stories or narratives serve as an extension of this fascination. They help us make better decisions even without supplying immediate information. When we each talk about the past, our stories not only disclose currently relevant social particulars, but also provide tools for reasoning about action—our own and others’. In many instances, the stories we tell offer explanations of an outcome that resulted when we acted upon something—or serve as indirect memories of a place …

Black Is Decidedly Not Just Black: A Case Study On Hiv Among African-Born Populations Living In Massachusetts, Chioma Nnaji, Nzinga Metzger Jul 2014

Black Is Decidedly Not Just Black: A Case Study On Hiv Among African-Born Populations Living In Massachusetts, Chioma Nnaji, Nzinga Metzger

Trotter Review

Black or African American is a racial category that includes the descendants of enslaved Africans as well as members of foreign-born black communities who migrated to the United States from places abroad, such as Africa, the Caribbean, and Latin America. Grouping native-born and foreign-born blacks into a single homogeneous racial category may make it easier to track disease and health outcomes; however, it masks the different cultural experiences, histories, languages, social and moral values, and expectations that influence health beliefs, attitudes, practices, and behaviors. It also ignores such factors as migration, which forces foreign-born populations to examine both their traditional …

Panoply: Haitian And Haitian-American Youth Crafting Identities In U.S. Schools, Fabienne Doucet Jul 2014

Panoply: Haitian And Haitian-American Youth Crafting Identities In U.S. Schools, Fabienne Doucet

Trotter Review

In the United States, where race is a powerful factor for social stratification (Appiah & Gutmann, 1998; Glick-Schiller & Fouron, 1990a; Omni & Winant, 1986), foreign-born Blacks find themselves battling the demoralizing impacts of discrimination, racism, and xenophobia on a daily basis. In the school context, racist assumptions have been shown to predispose teachers to have lower expectations of immigrant students and other students of color, to view them more often as behavioral problems, and to assume that their parents do not value education (Doucet, 2008, 2011b; Suárez-Orozco, Suárez-Orozco, & Todorova, 2008). At the same time, the powerful influence of …

“What I Care Bout Dogs?” How The Hegemony Of The English Language Colonizes Marginalized Groups, Richard Eric Andrews Jul 2014

“What I Care Bout Dogs?” How The Hegemony Of The English Language Colonizes Marginalized Groups, Richard Eric Andrews

Dissertations

Language has always seemed to play a pivotal role in the identity of individuals and groups who are relegated to the status of other by members of the dominant group. The misshapen identities of the others are further exacerbated by systems and structures in place, like education, which ensure the continued hegemonic status of dominant groups. Not being a part of the dominant group, and yet being required to conform to their standards, can be confusing for those on the outside. The character Celie, expressed this confusion, “Whitefolks all over them, talking bout apples and dogs. What I care bout …

Defining The Historic Landscape On Eastern Santa Rosa Island: Archaeological Investigations At Qshiwqshiw, Todd J. Braje, Torben C. Rick, Leslie Reeder-Myers, Breana Campbell, Kelly Minas Jul 2014

Defining The Historic Landscape On Eastern Santa Rosa Island: Archaeological Investigations At Qshiwqshiw, Todd J. Braje, Torben C. Rick, Leslie Reeder-Myers, Breana Campbell, Kelly Minas

Monographs of the Western North American Naturalist

The Chumash village of Qshiwqshiw, located on eastern Santa Rosa Island, is described in ethnographic sources as one of the largest Chumash villages on the northern Channel Islands, with 4 chiefs and 119 baptisms according to mission records. The village is thought to correlate with 2 archaeological sites (CA-SRI-85 and CA-SRI-87) that contain large and dense shell-midden deposits. Despite the importance of these sites for helping understand Late (650–168 cal BP) and Historic (AD 1769–1830) Period Chumash lifeways, only limited surface collections, one small column sample, and 4 radiocarbon dates were previously available, leaving unanswered important questions about the chronology …

Accuracy Of /T/ Productions In Children With Cochlear Implants As Compared To Normal-Hearing, Articulation Age-Matched Peers, Terry Gier Jul 2014

Accuracy Of /T/ Productions In Children With Cochlear Implants As Compared To Normal-Hearing, Articulation Age-Matched Peers, Terry Gier

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Children who receive cochlear implants (CIs) demonstrate considerable variability in speech sound production. Investigations focused on speech sound development in children with CIs have shown initial accelerated growth, followed by a plateau where consonant order of acquisition generally mirrors that of NH children, but is slower (Blamey, Barry, & Pascale, 2001; Serry & Blamey, 1999; Spencer & Guo, 2013). A notable exception to this pattern, /t/, has been shown to be acquired later-than normal in several investigations (Blamey et al., 2001; Chin, 2003; Ertmer, True Kloiber, Jongmin, Connell Kirleis, & Bradford, 2012). The primary purpose of this investigation was to …
