Executive Control In Hispanic Children: Considering Linguistic And Sociocultural Factors, Miriam M. Martinez Jul 2014

Executive Control In Hispanic Children: Considering Linguistic And Sociocultural Factors, Miriam M. Martinez

Department of Psychology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Executive control represents a collection of high-order cognitive processes that are associated with important child outcomes, including academic achievement and social competencies. Despite the burgeoning interest in examining the development of executive control, less is known about the development of these skills among ethnic minority children. Hispanic children are currently the largest ethnic minority group in the United States and their diverse sociocultural and linguistic backgrounds provide an excellent context to study the influence of linguistic and sociocultural factors on the development of child executive control. The purpose of the three complementary studies reported in this dissertation is to contribute …

Equality, Trust And Universalism In Europe, Canada And The United States: Implications For Health Care Policy, P. Christopher Palmedo Jul 2014

Equality, Trust And Universalism In Europe, Canada And The United States: Implications For Health Care Policy, P. Christopher Palmedo

Dissertations and Theses

A number of theoretical explanations seek to describe the factors that have led to the position of the United States as the last industrialized Western nation without a universal health care program. Theories focus on institutional arrangement, historic precedent, and the influence of the private sector and market forces. This study explores another factor: the role of underlying social values. The research examines differences in values among ten European countries, the United States and Canada, and analyzes the associations between the values that have been seen to contribute the individualism-collectivism dynamic in the United States. The hypothesis that equality and …

Social Competence In Children With Cochlear Implants And Normal Hearing: Longitudinal Trajectories And Interrater Differences, Michael Hoffman Jul 2014

Social Competence In Children With Cochlear Implants And Normal Hearing: Longitudinal Trajectories And Interrater Differences, Michael Hoffman

Open Access Theses

Children with hearing loss, who have substantial delays in language development, are likely to experience deficits in various aspects of social competence, such as social skills, emotional awareness, and interpersonal problem-solving. To date, few studies have measured and compared social competence in children with cochlear implants (CIs) and their hearing peers, and no studies have compared their longitudinal outcomes. Using parent, teacher, and child reports from two standardized measures, this study compared social competence in children with CIs and their hearing peers, followed by an analysis of discrepancies among these respondents over five years. Further, a latent variable of social …

Audience Preferences Are Predicted By Temporal Reliability Of Neural Processing, Jacek P. Dmochowski, Matthew A. Bezdek, Brian P. Abelson, John S. Johnson, Eric H. Schumacher, Lucas C. Parra Jul 2014

Audience Preferences Are Predicted By Temporal Reliability Of Neural Processing, Jacek P. Dmochowski, Matthew A. Bezdek, Brian P. Abelson, John S. Johnson, Eric H. Schumacher, Lucas C. Parra

Publications and Research

Naturalistic stimuli evoke highly reliable brain activity across viewers. Here we record neural activity from a group of naive individuals while viewing popular, previously-broadcast television content for which the broad audience response is characterized by social media activity and audience ratings. We find that the level of inter-subject correlation in the evoked encephalographic responses predicts the expressions of interest and preference among thousands. Surprisingly, ratings of the larger audience are predicted with greater accuracy than those of the individuals from whom the neural data is obtained. An additional functional magnetic resonance imaging study employing a separate sample of subjects shows …

Developing Attitudes Toward Learning Arabic As A Foreign Language Among American University And College Students, Martin Isleem

Faculty Contributions to Books

This study investigates the developing attitudes of American university and college students toward learning Arabic as a Foreign Language. The primary goal of this examination is to shed light on the ways in which students' attitudes toward learning Arabic affect their motivation to learn the language, as well as their commitment to learning it. A secondary goal of this study is to reveal students' perceptions of the use of both Spoken and Standard Arabic in the classroom, and what effect their perceptions may have on their developing attitudes toward Arabic, and their motivation to learn the language and study its …

Methodological Considerations For Qualitative Research With Immigrant Populations: Lessons From Two Studies, Yu Lu, Mary W. Gatua Jul 2014

Methodological Considerations For Qualitative Research With Immigrant Populations: Lessons From Two Studies, Yu Lu, Mary W. Gatua

The Qualitative Report

Often, research strategies are guided by principles developed based on mainstream U.S. cultural norms. Immigrants, however, may differ in their cultural backgrounds and previous exposure to research. Commonly adopted research procedures, such as the informed consent process, may be culturally inappropriate for research with culturally diverse populations, and hence require cultural adaptations. Based on two qualitative studies, this paper describes the methodological issues encountered in the field when working with Chinese and Kenyan immigrants, and explains how these issues were resolved. Comparing and synthesizing experiences from the two studies, recommendations for methodological adaptations when working with immigrant populations are provided. …

Limitation, Subversion, And Agency: Gendered Spaces In The Works Of Margaret Mahy, Cynthia Voigt, And Dia Na Wynne Jones, Elizabeth Ann Pearce Jul 2014

Limitation, Subversion, And Agency: Gendered Spaces In The Works Of Margaret Mahy, Cynthia Voigt, And Dia Na Wynne Jones, Elizabeth Ann Pearce

Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation, I argue that adolescent literature featuring female protagonists often illustrates complicated relationships between gender and space. My contention is that because of their gender, these protagonists are uniquely constrained to the home, which creates a literary pattern that has serious ideological implications. While I argue that the dominant discourse of these novels implies that girls should adhere to specific cultural norms, some of these works, however, provide room for subversion and agency, including new ways of looking at patriarchal constructions. To demonstrate these issues at work, I use the novels of three female authors from three different …

Joining ``The Mathematician's Delirium To The Poet's Logic'': Mathematical Literature And Literary Mathematics, Rita Capezzi, Christine Kinsey

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics

This paper describes our team-taught interdisciplinary mathematics and literature course, Mathematical Literature and Literary Mathematics, which invites students to consider Raymond Queneau's challenge: "Why shouldn't one demand a certain effort on the reader's part? Everything is always explained to him. He must eventually tire of being treated with such contempt.'' We study works by Berge, Borges, Calvino, Perec, Queneau, Robbe-Grillet and Stoppard, among others. From a literary critical perspective, the course highlights the play of language rather than the primacy of meaning. We choose texts where mathematical concepts are subjects or structuring elements of the literature, and ideally both. …

Religion And Language As Cultural Carriers And Barriers In Mathematics Education--Revisited, Murad E. Jurdak Jul 2014

Religion And Language As Cultural Carriers And Barriers In Mathematics Education--Revisited, Murad E. Jurdak

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics

Here we revisit a paper which examined two theses regarding the roles of religion and language of instruction in mathematics education. The first thesis states that if values of mathematics education are incompatible with the value system of the mother culture, then mathematics will be ``appended'' to the culture as a ``technology'' rather than assimilated as a ``mode of thinking''. The second thesis states that as soon as mathematics is applied in problems and situations, the language of instruction and learning becomes a cultural carrier in terms of behaviors, social relations, habits, and values. In the original paper, the first …

Code-Switching Learning Outcomes Using Digital Badges: Opening Our Learning Outcomes To Our Learners, Nicholas Schiller Jul 2014

Code-Switching Learning Outcomes Using Digital Badges: Opening Our Learning Outcomes To Our Learners, Nicholas Schiller

Library Instruction West 2014

Many of us want our library instruction programs to be centered on our students. Many of the best practices for student centered instruction involve outcomes assessment methods. There is an unfortunate disconnect between the specialized language generated by outcomes assessment methods and the everyday language used by students. All too often the outcomes we want our students to reach are not written in language our students can read.

This session will examine how digital badges are an ideal tool for code-switching (or switching between more and less formal dialects) dense academic language into language targeted for beginning scholars. Using the …

Improving Care For Postpartum Depression, Gretchen Perhamus Jul 2014

Improving Care For Postpartum Depression, Gretchen Perhamus

Research Scholars Poster Presentation

Abstract

Postpartum depression, or depression after childbirth, is a widespread and potentially devastating condition. Symptoms range in severity, but typically include standard difficulties associated with depression, with the addition of a disinterest in and/or thoughts of harming the new baby (Dennis, 2013). An inquiry into the LVPG (Lehigh Valley Practice Group) OBGYN and Pediatric offices within the LVHN (Lehigh Valley Health Network) determined that each practice has about four mothers per month (with one possible exception of 20-30 per month) who develop postpartum depression, but there is a limited amount of support available to these patients. A review into the …

The Diversity Project: Factors Influencing Participation in Clinical Research

Alex Winter

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the factors influencing participation in clinical research. More specifically, it is to determine if gender and race/ethnicity are major contributors to the disparity seen in participation. Using surveys in various clinics/outpatient facilities within the Lehigh Valley Health Network such as Family Medicine and Emergency Medicine, we hope to achieve a better understanding of patient’s feelings/thoughts about participation in clinical research. The survey focuses on what differences exist between genders and between races and ethnicities with regards to barriers that may …

Ecolinguistics And The Foundational Construction Of Language Theory For Contemporary Ecological Literary And Cultural Studies, Kuiying Zhao Jul 2014

Ecolinguistics And The Foundational Construction Of Language Theory For Contemporary Ecological Literary And Cultural Studies, Kuiying Zhao

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Language research is closely related with eco literature and cultural studies, while a dilema in the study of eco literature and cultural theory is the need for a proper linguistic theory as its foundation. Ecolinguistics emphasizes the two-way interactions both between language and environment and between language and the world, and takes language as the intermedia between nature and culture, and put the environment of language into the complexity of nature, socity and psychological elements. Therefore, ecolinguisitics can transcend the one-way determinism between the world and language on the one hand and the either-or dualism of the naturalness and artbitrariniess …

Language Diversity In Trainings: Analyzing The Use Of English In A Writeshop Process, Elis Cardoso Motta Jul 2014

Language Diversity In Trainings: Analyzing The Use Of English In A Writeshop Process, Elis Cardoso Motta

Capstone Collection

This capstone paper discusses a learning process called “writeshop,” and the role played by language use in a writeshop I co-facilitated in November 2013 in South Africa. A writeshop is a workshop to collectively create a written product for publication. This paper starts with a description of my experience in co-designing and co-facilitating a writeshop as part of my practicum, followed by a reflection on the process and the different roles I played, from a trainer lens. The third part of this capstone paper presents an analysis, based on a survey and individual interviews conducted with the writeshop participants, of …
