Remittances And Governance: Does The Government Free Ride?, Durga P. Gautam
Remittances And Governance: Does The Government Free Ride?, Durga P. Gautam
Economics Faculty Working Papers Series
Through what channel and to what extent does the inflow of remittances affect the quality of governance in the recipient countries? Recent studies suggest that a rise in remittances reduces public goods provision. Scholars generally agree that remittances increase consumption expenditure of the recipient households. This implicit positive correlation between remittances and the ratio of household to government consumption indicates an increasing share of private goods in household consumption. The decreasing share of public goods, on the other hand, tends to reduce households0 incentives to monitor and hold the government accountable. As a result, the external benefits generated by household …

Features Of Style In The Story Of Moses (Peace Be Upon Him) In The Holy Quran: The Scenes Of Dialogue And Throwing The Staff As An Example, Qusay Ibrahim Ne\'Meh, Ahmed Hayal Jihad
Uruk Journal of Human Sciences
The narrative style of the Quranic stories represents a major landmark in the Arabic narrative tradition, not only for its profound religious and linguistic significance, but also for the sophisticated techniques employed. This is particularly evident in the delicate balance between the narrative elements, the elements of suspense and surprise, the natural flow and spontaneity of the events, and the central theme of the story itself. Furthermore, the distinctive stylistic structure is another hallmark of Quranic storytelling, as various styles are employed within a single story, depending on the context. This is clearly seen in the story of Moses, which …
The Effect Of The Integrative Approach According To The Strategies Of Reciprocal Teaching And Mental Imagery On The Academic Achievement Of Students Of The College Of Fine Arts In The Subject Of Grammar, Murad Youssef Alwan
Uruk Journal of Human Sciences
Linguists, both ancient and modern, agree on the importance of grammar, as a speaker fails to effectively communicate if they do not use grammar correctly. Grammar is the backbone of the Arabic language. However, empirical evidence suggests that grammar questions in final exams pose a significant challenge for students. The researcher, based on their academic experience, observed that in Arabic language final exams, students tend to rely more on other aspects of the language to achieve a passing grade. The Ninth Conference of the Arab Teachers' Union recommended dividing the Arabic language exam score into two sections: reading, writing, and …
Fundamental Assumptions In Narrative Analysis: Mapping The Field, Dominique Robert, Shaul Shenhav
Fundamental Assumptions In Narrative Analysis: Mapping The Field, Dominique Robert, Shaul Shenhav
The Qualitative Report
The richness of narrative analysis resides in its unruly openness, but points of reference are needed to tame the variety in the field. This article suggests that researchers should grapple with two fundamental questions when conducting narrative analysis. The first pertains to the status attributed to narrative: it is defined as the very fabric of human existence or as one representational device among others? Emphasizing one answer over the other means mobilizing different theories of representation and therefore, suggesting different articulations between "narrative" and "reality." The second question refers to the perspective developed on narrative: Is it defined mostly as …

East-West Cultural Mediation In The Works Of Galsan Tschinag, Richard Hacken
East-West Cultural Mediation In The Works Of Galsan Tschinag, Richard Hacken
Faculty Publications
This presentation applies the theory and tools of postcolonial theory to the literary techniques and output of the Mongolian writer, Galsan Tschinag, who publishes most of his works in German. It focuses on literary mediation between Asia and Europe, especially Germany, as found in his poetry and prose. In secondary literature Galsan Tschinag has been called the corrective “polar reverse of an Orientalist;” an apologist for round stones in a culture of angular concrete; a wanderer between worlds; an ambassador for Tuva; a linguistic nomad; the poet as shaman; a phenomenon on German talk shows; the Tuvan Moses; a cultural …

Quantifying Soil Loss In The Hispaniola Borderland, Andrew Valenski
Geography and the Environment Capstone Projects
Resource management is a highly contested topic, as various methodologies have been employed by governments, corporations, and interest groups across the globe. Contemporary debates regarding resource management primarily focus on two linked issues: the role of government and problem recognition. This paper will explain the two different resource management strategies and delve into the problem recognition process. Ultimately, this paper will examine the Haitian-Dominican borderland to address both of these issues and demonstrate the need for an integrated, sustainable, interventionist approach in the management of borderland resources.
Paper prepared for the Environmental Studies Senior Seminar/Geography Capstone.

Explorations Into The Psycholinguistic Validity Of Extended Collocations, J. Arianna Morgan
Dissertations and Theses
This study tests the hypothesis that frequency and collocational association make independent contributions to the processing time of English multiword collocational, phrases for L1 and L2 English speakers. The results suggest that these constructs do play a role in the processing of 4-word, corpus-extracted phrases. In this sample, L1 speakers demonstrated reduced processing time for both highly frequent and highly associated phrases, while L2 speakers demonstrated reduced processing time for highly frequent phrases. Evidence exists in the data that highly proficient L2 speakers may develop similar patterns of reduced processing time as L1 speakers. Additionally, some L1 speakers did not …

Assistive Technologies Used By Students With Asperger’S Syndrome To Improve Performance In The General Education Classroom, Sara (Beth) Cardwell Foreman
Assistive Technologies Used By Students With Asperger’S Syndrome To Improve Performance In The General Education Classroom, Sara (Beth) Cardwell Foreman
CCAC Theses and Dissertations
The No Child Left Behind Act requires all students; regardless of poverty level, learning disability, limited English proficiency, or racial/ethnic origins; to be in general education classrooms meeting high standards of proficiency in reading/language arts and mathematics by 2013-14. Meeting high standards of proficiency in a general education classroom is particularly challenging for students diagnosed with pervasive developmental disorders, such as Asperger's syndrome. Limited interests, inflexible language, and social skills deficits without a history of cognitive or language delays before the age of three characterize the disorder. Other symptoms, such as clumsiness, unusual sensory reactions, and talk in unusual ways …

An Investigation Of The Role Of Guided Reading In Proficient First Grade Reader's In-School Writing, Jolene Reed
An Investigation Of The Role Of Guided Reading In Proficient First Grade Reader's In-School Writing, Jolene Reed
Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs
This participant observation research study explored relationships between the role of guided reading and in-school writing of three proficient first-grade literacy learners during the first eight months of the 2007-08 school-year. Portraits of each student as a literacy learner were developed through case studies. Those individual case studies were then analyzed for themes in a cross-case analysis. Data were collected regarding text encountered during the guided reading sessions that occurred in the classroom and also in the form of writing artifacts produced by the three students during the writing workshop portion of their school day. Additional data collected included student …

Effect Of Convergence Culture On Spectatorship, Amanda Marcus
Effect Of Convergence Culture On Spectatorship, Amanda Marcus
e-Research: A Journal of Undergraduate Work
Media convergence has changed how we receive and process information. No longer are we passive spectators, but we are part of the media we consume. Because of the explosion of technology since the turn of the century and a new definition of spectatorship, producers of media can no longer control how their messages are received; they have to engage their audience and listen to feedback in order to remain functioning. Fellow peers serve as informants or as a new source of media. This also affects our individual identities, which shapes our cultural identity. Social media enables us to present ourselves …

Shi'ite Reformism Versus Shi'ite Fundamentalism: A Comparative Study Of Shi'ite Discursive Practices In 20th Century Iran: The Cases Of Khomeini And Hakamizadeh, Mozafar Banihashemi
Shi'ite Reformism Versus Shi'ite Fundamentalism: A Comparative Study Of Shi'ite Discursive Practices In 20th Century Iran: The Cases Of Khomeini And Hakamizadeh, Mozafar Banihashemi
Sociology ETDs
The patterns of socio/political transformation that Iran went through in the 20th century generated episodes of great ideological divergence within Irans shi'ite establishment. The current study seeks to shed light on an instance of textual exchange that took place in the earlier part of the century — in 1943 — but became the bedrock for subsequent discursive conflicts within shi'ism notably during and after the 1979 Islamic Revolution. Adopting the format of a dialogue and operating within the milieu of a shi'ite outlook, the authors of this exchange, Hakamizadeh and Khomeini, touched upon several social and political topics such as …

Mo Yan In Context: Nobel Laureate And Global Storyteller, Angelica Duran, Yuhan Huang
Purdue University Press Books
In 2012 the Swedish Academy announced that Mo Yan had received the Nobel Prize in Literature for his work that “with hallucinatory realism merges folk tales, history, and the contemporary.” The announcement marked the first time a resident of mainland China had ever received the award. This is the first English-language study of the Chinese writer’s work and influence, featuring essays from scholars in a range of disciplines, from both China and the United States. Its introduction, twelve articles, and epilogue aim to deepen and widen critical discussions of both a specific literary author and the globalization of Chinese literature …
