Traditionally, formal adult education was reserved for the privileged. Thus, those without the financial means or, as in the case of the United States prior to 1865, individuals who were enslaved, were unable to capitalize on the educational benefits of the upper class. Hence, other means were used to obtain knowledge. For African Americans, community voluntary organizations and the Church served as informal learning institutions. Education and religion have long been paired in the Church. The AAC engaged African Americans in informal learning through forums, newsletters, fairs, workshops and seminars. Through its ministries, the Church has enabled African American adults …

A Study On Rebuilding The Classification System Of The Ocean Economy, Dr. Kwang Seo Park
A Study On Rebuilding The Classification System Of The Ocean Economy, Dr. Kwang Seo Park
Working Papers
Many ocean countries have estimated and released the size of the ocean economy or industry. However it is difficult to compare the ocean economy among countries because the definition, classification standard and scope differ by each country. This study aims to provide concrete practical proposals for the definition, classification standard and scope of the ocean economy. With regard to the definition of the ocean economy, a combination of industrial and geographical perspectives is considered at the same time. As a result, the ocean economy is defined as the economic activities that directly or indirectly take place in the ocean, use …

What's New About The New Normal: The Evolving Market For New Lawyers In The 21st Century, Bernard A. Burk
What's New About The New Normal: The Evolving Market For New Lawyers In The 21st Century, Bernard A. Burk
Florida State University Law Review
Everyone agrees that job prospects for many new law graduates have been poor for the last several years; there is rather less consensus on whether, when, how, or why that may change as the economy recovers from the Great Recession. This Article analyzes historical and current trends in the job market for new lawyers in an effort to predict how that market may evolve.
The Article derives quantitative measurements of the proportion of law graduates over the last thirty years who have obtained initial employment for which law school serves as rational substantive preparation (“Law Jobs”). In comparing entry-level hiring …

Implementation Of A Mhealth Program Within A Homeless Population Of Young Mothers, Maureen Byrnes
Implementation Of A Mhealth Program Within A Homeless Population Of Young Mothers, Maureen Byrnes
Seton Hall University DNP Final Projects
Purpose: Despite major medical advancements and education, more than 500,000 babies are born prematurely and an estimated 28,000 infants die before their first birthday annually (www.marchofdimes.com/peristats). New Jersey’s infant mortality rate appears exemplary when compared to the United States overall infant mortality rate. Yet, New Jersey’s infant mortality rate, preterm birth rate and low birth rate by mother’s race reveal a far greater risk for infants born to a mother who is African American (www.nj.gov/health/epht/outcome.shtml). The need for innovative approaches to improving New Jersey’s maternal-infant health is paramount. Mobile phones may provide an appropriate means of …

Small Migrant Nonprofit Organizations: Leadership Approaches That Connect To The Country Of Origin, Josephat Makori Nyangau
Theses and Graduate Projects
As a Kenya migrant who has observed leaders of migrant organizations play a great role both in country of origin and their host, I was motivated to undertake this study to find out the approaches migrant leaders use to connect to their country of origin. This study aimed to review literature on small migrant nonprofit organizations with emphasis on Kenyan registered migrant nonprofit organizations in Minnesota. Other migrant organizations were also explored to help bridge the gap in the literature. The literature review conducted found few registered migrant nonprofit organizations of Kenyan descent in the Minnesota registry based on their …

Beyond The Fakultas'S Four Walls: Linking Education, Practice, And The Legal Profession, Stephen A. Rosenbaum
Washington International Law Journal
More than fifty years after the first post-colonial Southeast Asian regional conference on legal education, commentators and educators do not necessarily agree on the appropriate curricular balance between theory, doctrine, and practice, or what role the government should play in directing the orientation of legal studies and careers in Indonesia’s law schools. The author argues in favor of legal education that is rich in experiential learning and integrates the involvement of practitioners and doctrinal faculty. This objective may be a relatively new reality in Indonesia, but also one that needs revitalization in other Southeast Asian nations and beyond. This article …
How Lawyers Manage Intragroup Dissent, Scott L. Cummings
How Lawyers Manage Intragroup Dissent, Scott L. Cummings
Chicago-Kent Law Review
This essay, adapted from the keynote speech for the conference, reflects upon how lawyers respond to dissent within social movements—over the goals of social change efforts and the means of pursuing them. Drawing upon case studies from the LGBT rights and labor contexts, it describes specific challenges to managing dissent within “top-down” and “bottom-up” lawyering models. From the top-down, it explores how lawyers in the California marriage equality movement addressed repeated legal challenges over litigation tactics. From the bottom-up, it describes how lawyers for a community-labor coalition dealt with competing conceptions of the public good in a campaign to stop …

Reconsidering Dual Consent, Lisa V. Martin
Reconsidering Dual Consent, Lisa V. Martin
Faculty Publications
Before a child may travel internationally, many countries require proof that both of the child’s parents consent. These “dual consent” requirements are aimed at preventing international child abduction, and many countries have adopted them as part of the coordinated effort to implement the 1980 Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction. In recent years, international air carriers have been urged to impose similar requirements for all children traveling on international flights. Although well-intentioned, dual consent requirements pose significant harms, especially to children of single parents and parents subjected to domestic violence. This article explores the unintended consequences …
