Hispanic Health Initiative: Creating A Sustainable Health Fair For An Immigrant Community, Chaz Arnold
Hispanic Health Initiative: Creating A Sustainable Health Fair For An Immigrant Community, Chaz Arnold
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
Previous demographic and social interest research conducted in Bowling Green, Kentucky has prompted concern for access to quality healthcare for immigrant populations, specifically for the Hispanic community. The missions of the preliminary investigation and subsequent implementation of a sustainable health fair for the Spanish-speaking community were to assess the primary health concerns that many Hispanics face and offer long-term solutions to collectively resolve these health issues. Preliminary investigation involved researching population-specific health statistics in order to quantify prevalence of certain conditions which were, in turn, prioritized in terms of necessity to address. Further research reflected personal concern from the target …

Gail Coleman Directs Generous Gift To Pancreatic Cancer Research
Jefferson Surgical Solutions
Gail Coleman of Alexandria, Virginia spent three decades as an attorney with the U.S. Department of Labor. Now retired, she enjoys traveling, volunteer activities, and taking history classes at George Mason University. And she still utilizes the analytical skills of an attorney. Indeed, before recommending a $100,000 grant to Jefferson (see “Changing Lives Through Research” on p. 3), Gail educated herself on the landscape of pancreatic cancer research, met with several institutions and evaluated a number of potential projects.
Gail’s initial decision to support pancreatic cancer research was not analytical, but deeply personal: The disease took her mother in 1989, …

The Effects Of Physical Activity On On-Task And Off-Task Behaviors Of An Elementary School Student With Adhd, Kayla Whitney Eppard
Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019
The purpose of this study was to explore and evaluate a possible connection between the participation in a physical activity and the on-task and off-task behaviors of an elementary school student with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Specifically, the intervention phase applied in this study hoped to increase the on-task behaviors exhibited by the student while also decreasing off-task behaviors. After observing the student in the baseline phase, the intervention was applied based on the student’s choice of physical activity. Then, the researcher observed the student through whole interval recording of on-task behavior and partial interval recording of off-task behavior for ten …

Labeling And Framing Of Human Trafficking Victimhood, Elizabeth Regina Ramirez Kemp
Labeling And Framing Of Human Trafficking Victimhood, Elizabeth Regina Ramirez Kemp
Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019
Victims and victimhood are socially constructed concepts that are given meaning through interaction. Human trafficking victims face labels that are interpreted through a variety of frames due to the complex nature of discourses surrounding human trafficking. Based on 304 hours of participant observation and 10 semi-structured interviews with service providers, law enforcement, and survivors of human trafficking I first seek to identify the ways service providers and law enforcement officials use labels and neutralization techniques to support an overall frame of human trafficking as an issue of human rights. Second, I analyze how their efforts to neutralize the label of …

Maintaining Stability In The Face Of Adversity: Self-Care Practices Of Human Trafficking Survivor-Traniners In India, Ashley Fargnoli
Creative Arts Therapies Theses
What are the lived experiences of self-care for human trafficking survivors in Kolkata, India who are working with other survivors? Within the human rights organization, Kolkata Sanved, survivors of human trafficking are implementing dance/movement therapy (DMT) based techniques to empower other survivors. These survivor-trainers are currently fulfilling the dual role of survivor and provider. Six women between the ages of 22 and 28 participated in this transcendental phenomenological study. Semi-structured interviews were the primary mode of data collection. Artistic methods were also included to engage participants in movement to further reflect on their experiences of self-care. To analyze the interviews, …

Avon Global Center for Women and Justice and Dorothea S. Clarke Program in Feminist Jurisprudence
In many South African schools, educators have sexually harassed and abused the learners in their care. This serious human rights violation is widespread and well known. However, its actual incidence is difficult to determine as many cases of educator-learner abuse are never reported. Such harassment and abuse – which occurs with frequency not only in South Africa but also worldwide – has devastating consequences for the health and education of the learners, mainly girls, who experience it. Over the past decade, South Africa has adopted important laws and policies to address this grave human rights problem, yet sexual violence persists …

The Mary Poppins Problem: Enforcing Protective Legislation For Domestic Workers In America, Anna Pickrell
Sociology Honors Projects
State-level legislation to advance employment rights for domestic workers is on the rise in the United States, but implementation is largely ineffective due to a lack of representation on behalf of employees. This study analyzes the roles of two specific types of organizations — public policy networks pushing legislation for domestic workers and employment agencies placing workers into jobs — to better understand how enforcement of existing laws in this field can be improved through the services that protective organizations provide. Can domestic workers rely on these groups to secure their rights when individual employers may not, or do they …

Identifying Desaparecidos: The Development Of Forensic Anthropology In Chile, Amanda M. Quinn
Identifying Desaparecidos: The Development Of Forensic Anthropology In Chile, Amanda M. Quinn
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
Between 1973 and 1990, Pinochet’s dictatorship in Chile implemented the systematic practice of forced disappearances and extrajudicial killings in order to eradicate the imagined “communist cancer” (Wyndham and Read 2010: 31). A total of 3,227 deaths have been tallied; 1,465 of these were cases of detenidos-desaparecidos, or enforced disappearances (Garrido and Intriago 2012: 34). Scholars suggest that Chile’s transition to democracy will remain incomplete without first locating and identifying the desaparecidos (Aguilar 2002). Through methods of comparing postmortem skeletal analysis with antemortem data, forensic anthropologists carry out the important work that makes identifications possible.
This thesis evaluates the development …
