Continuous Subglottic Suctioning Of Intubated Patients In The Icu, Dan Deutsch Jan 2014

Continuous Subglottic Suctioning Of Intubated Patients In The Icu, Dan Deutsch

Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Posters

Ventilator associated pneumonia (VAP) is a common complication in mechanically ventilated patients. It causes substantial morbidity and mortality, as well as substantial cost to the patients and healthcare systems. One of the major risk factors identified for risk of VAP is the aspiration of secretions from the oropharynx. One intervention aimed at decreasing the incidence of secretion aspiration is an endotracheal tube (ETT) that can be hooked up to suction, providing continuous subglottic suctioning. The purpose of this paper was to explore the use of continuous subglottic suctioning and its effects on the incidence of ventilator-associated pneumonia. Review of literature …

Comparing Fecal Microbiota Transplant (Fmt) To Vancomycin: In Treatment Of Recurrent Clostridium Difficile Infections (Cdi), Christopher Seil Jan 2014

Comparing Fecal Microbiota Transplant (Fmt) To Vancomycin: In Treatment Of Recurrent Clostridium Difficile Infections (Cdi), Christopher Seil

Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Posters

• Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) is the main cause of antibiotic-associated pseudomembranous colitis.

• CDI has tripled over the last ten years due to the increased use of broad spectrum antibiotics. CDI has become increasingly difficult to manage with traditional therapies such as metronidazole and vancomycin due to mutations in the pathogen, resulting in resistant organisms.

• The purpose of this review was to determine if fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) is more effective in treating and curing CDIs than traditional vancomycin therapy.

• The hypothesis was that FMT will have better treatment outcomes than traditional vancomycin therapy.

• The findings …

Lyme Disease Outcomes With Immediate, Short Duration Antibiotic Use Versus Delayed, Longer Duration Use, Lori A. Steinley Jan 2014

Lyme Disease Outcomes With Immediate, Short Duration Antibiotic Use Versus Delayed, Longer Duration Use, Lori A. Steinley

Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Posters

Lyme disease is the fastest growing vector-borne disease in the United States, according to the Infectious Disease Society of America (IDSA). The guidelines for diagnosis provided by the IDSA include evidence of erythema migrans rash with validation of a positive two-tier serology testing. With no established treatment standards, decreased sensitivity of testing and inconsistency of observing the rash, practitioners following the guidelines may delay treatment of antibiotics. This delay could cause progression of severity of symptoms.

The purpose of this study is to compare implementation and duration time of antibiotics and establish the treatment protocol for best clinical outcomes for …

Novel Strategies To Develop Better Brucellosis Vaccines Using Brucella Abortus Rb51 And B. Neotomae, Neha Dabral Jan 2014

Novel Strategies To Develop Better Brucellosis Vaccines Using Brucella Abortus Rb51 And B. Neotomae, Neha Dabral

Open Access Dissertations

The genus Brucella consists of Gram-negative, facultative intracellular coccobacilli that can cause chronic infections in several mammals. Brucella spp. can exhibit a smooth or rough phenotype; smooth Brucella spp. contain a surface-exposed O-polysaccharide in their cell wall structure while the rough Brucella spp. are devoid of the O-polysaccharide. Acquired immunity against Brucella infection is primarily cell-mediated and involves both CD4+ T cells and CD8+ T cell responses. However, antibodies to the O-polysaccharide also play a role in enhancing the protection against infections by virulent Brucella species in some hosts. B. abortus strain RB51 is a stable rough attenuated mutant which …

The Impact Of Down Syndrome And Folate Depletion On Genomic Stabilizing Pathways Of Lymphoblastoid Cells, Khadijah Ibrahim Alnabbat Jan 2014

The Impact Of Down Syndrome And Folate Depletion On Genomic Stabilizing Pathways Of Lymphoblastoid Cells, Khadijah Ibrahim Alnabbat

Wayne State University Theses

Understanding the role of nutrition plays in Down syndrome (DS) could help in the development and implementation of strategies that help overcome the negative consequences phenotypes of Down syndrome. Conserving genome integrity is crucial for cells to survive, and thus understanding how genetic defects induce damage to genomic DNA and impair subsequent repair of this damage is important. Evidence accumulated points to increased DNA damage and mutation accumulation associated with a decline in DNA repair capacity, Base Excision Repair (BER) in particular. Thus, the successful clinical management of DS resides in understanding the metabolic imbalance provoked by overexpression of genes …

Ethics Consultations And Conflict Engagement In Health Care, Charity Scott

Faculty Publications By Year

This article explores the intersection of two professional fields - bioethics and clinical ethics consultation in health care on one hand, and alternative dispute resolution ("ADR") and conflict management on the other - which until recent years remained relatively unknown to each other. It marries the literatures and lessons of these two fields in order to promote the quality of ethics consultations in hospitals and other health care organizations. * Increasingly, health care ethics committees and consultants acknowledge the need to employ the frameworks, approaches, and tools of good conflict management to do their work effectively. Similarly, conflict specialists and …

Behavioral Response Of N. Spring Peepers (Pseudacris Crucifer) To A Common Road De-Icer, Nacl, Kara Lindstrom

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Amphibians are highly susceptible to environmental degradation in the form of pollution and are therefore considered an indicator for pollutants. Amphibian populations have been on the decline in recent years and possible causes have been subject of much recent research. One possible contributor to the decline is the effect of the use of road de-icing salts on the availability of viable habitat choices. Road salt, primarily NaCl, is one of the leading contributors of chloride in aquatic environments in northern climates. Salt from road run-off has the ability to affect amphibians directly by causing a reduction in offspring fitness, resulting …

High-Level Expression Of The Brugia Malayi Protein Kinase, Bm-Mpk 1, In Insect Sf9 Cells, Arti Rana

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Lymphatic Filariasis (elephantiasis) is a neglected tropical disease caused by the filarial nematodes Brugia malayi (B. malayi), Brugia timori, and Wuchererici Bancrofti (1,8). These parasites are present in over 83 counties in the tropics and sub-tropics where more than 1.4 billion people are at risk of infection and 130 million people are presently infected (1,7). Previous work from our lab has led to the identification and expression of a B. malayi stress-activated protein kinase, Bm-MPKl (a human p38/C. elegans PMK-1 ortholog). Bm-MPKl plays an important role in the parasites’ protection against oxidative stress (1), and as such is a potential …
