The Heart Of Servant-Leadership: Ten Years Of The International Journal Of Servant-Leadership, Shann Ray Ferch Jan 2014

The Heart Of Servant-Leadership: Ten Years Of The International Journal Of Servant-Leadership, Shann Ray Ferch

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

In the tenth volume of the journal, I am grateful to recognize ten years of interdisciplinary and international leadership studies focusing on servantleadership. Here, on the advent of the next ten years, the International Journal of Servant-Leadership contains the fresh critical vigor shown in feminist gender-integrative understandings of servant-leadership, a continued look at the vast field of theory and science that exists in the contemporary world of servant-leadership studies, and an enduring focus on the poetry of servantleadership.

Servant-Leadership: A Feminist Perspective, Kae Reynolds Jan 2014

Servant-Leadership: A Feminist Perspective, Kae Reynolds

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

At the heart of this paper is the notion that servant-leadership has potential as a feminism-informed, care-oriented, and gender-integrative approach to organizational leadership. Although there is a significant body of literature on feminist and gender-based interpretations of leadership, the same is not true for servant-leadership. The main contributors to date include Crippen's (2004) narrative inquiry of three women servant-leaders, Eicher-Catt's (2005) feminist critique of servant-leadership, Oner's (2009) and Barbuto and Gifford's (2010) empirical studies of gender differences in servantleadership, and Ngunjiri's (2010) phenomenological study of African women servant-leaders.

Aquaponic Production Of Lettuce (Lactuca Sativa L.) Using Effluent From A Cold Water Flow-Through Aquaculture System, Gaylynn Elise Johnson Jan 2014

Aquaponic Production Of Lettuce (Lactuca Sativa L.) Using Effluent From A Cold Water Flow-Through Aquaculture System, Gaylynn Elise Johnson

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Aquaponics is the integration of aquaculture (the rearing of fish) and hydroponics (the conventional method of soilless farming). Effluent produced from the production of fish can be utilized as a source of nutrients by plants for growth in a hydroponic subsystem. Lettuce (Lactuca sativa) is an economically important vegetable crop that can be grown aquaponically. However, the suitability of lettuce for production in cold water flow-through systems (FTSs) is poorly described. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the growth, market rating, and nutrient uptake of lettuce grown in a cold water FTS. Three objectives were established to examine …

Building Community In Schools: Servant-Leadership, Restorative Justice, And Discipline Reform, Felix J. Yerace Jan 2014

Building Community In Schools: Servant-Leadership, Restorative Justice, And Discipline Reform, Felix J. Yerace

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

In the United States, educational quality varies widely across school districts. For decades, many Americans have questioned education quality (Pulliam and Patten 2007; Urban and Wagoner 2009; Webb 2006). The twentieth century saw over thirty national reports and over 300 state and federal task forces look at how schools could improve (Giroux 2004). Despite these efforts, many remain dissatisfied with education in America (Strauss 2012).

Administrative Professionals: Quiet Servant-Leaders? Executive Assistants And Servant-Leadership, Kris Dugan Jan 2014

Administrative Professionals: Quiet Servant-Leaders? Executive Assistants And Servant-Leadership, Kris Dugan

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

Do you consider yourself a leader, whether it be formal or informal? I wanted to write this article about servant-leadership/quiet leadership to show the connection to all the quiet leaders in the executive administrative field. Robert K. Greenleaf's definition of servant-leader is "a person who begins with a natural feeling of wanting to serve first-to help, support, encourage, and lift up others. Because of their noble role model, others begin to lead by serving" ( 1977).

Growing Taller: The Role Of Empathy And Acceptance In Building Up Followers, Jae Webb Jan 2014

Growing Taller: The Role Of Empathy And Acceptance In Building Up Followers, Jae Webb

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

While unable to agree on many of the subtle points of what leadership is or is not, many scholars define leadership as the influence of one person over another person or persons with the impetus of completing a goal or objective (Northouse 2010; Chemers 2014; Chhokar, Brodbeck, and House 2004). Two concepts are predominate in this understanding of leadership. One is the objective of accomplishing tasks; the other is the presence of power or influence in the relationship between a leader and her or his followers. The latter sets the stage for the focus of this paper, the examination and …

A Mixed-Methods Study Exploring The Relationship Between Servant-Leadership And Emotional Intelligence, Carolyn S. Roark, Timothy M. Beuthin

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

In today's frenetic ever-changing world, organizations face ambitious destinies, and leaders who aspire to meet and exceed lofty financial goals often find themselves in corrupt terrain. A demand exists in society for more ethical, people-centered leaders (Barbuto, Gottfredson, and Searle 2014; Page and Wong 2000; van Dierendonck 2011 ). A resounding call is emerging for effective leadership embedded in an ethical framework that gives precedence to developing relationships with followers (Page and Wong 2000; van Dierendonck and Patterson 2010). Although the servant-leadership model is the "less travelled road" in leadership (Sendjaya 2010, 39), its characterfocused approach centering on collaboration and …

A Mitochondrial Rnai Screen Defines Cellular Bioenergetic Determinants And Identifies An Adenylate Kinase As A Key Regulator Of Atp Levels, Nathan J. Lanning, Brendan D. Looyenga, Audra L. Kauffman, Natalie M. Niemi

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

Altered cellular bioenergetics and mitochondrial function are major features of several diseases, including cancer, diabetes, and neurodegenerative disorders. Given this important link to human health, we sought to define proteins within mitochondria that are critical for maintaining homeostatic ATP levels. We screened an RNAi library targeting >1,000 nuclear-encoded genes whose protein products localize to the mitochondria in multiple metabolic conditions in order to examine their effects on cellular ATP levels. We identified a mechanism by which electron transport chain (ETC) perturbation under glycolytic conditions increased ATP production through enhanced glycolytic flux, thereby highlighting the cellular potential for metabolic plasticity. Additionally, …

Planning Development: International Experts, Agricultural Policy, And The Modernization Of Nigeria, 1945-1967, Bekeh Utietiang

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The period after the Second World War was a significant moment in British colonialism in Nigeria. It was the height of the decolonization movements in many of Britain's colonial holdings and was the cradle of what David Low and J. M. Lonsdale call the "second colonial occupation." This occupation in which the British government carried out expansive development policies was an intentional attempt to wrestle with social unrest due to the neglect of the social welfare of the people during the Great Depression and in the period thereafter. Such a development vision was represented by the passage of the 1940 …

Equally Recognized? The Indigenous Peoples Of Newfoundland And Labrador, Sébastien Grammond Jan 2014

Equally Recognized? The Indigenous Peoples Of Newfoundland And Labrador, Sébastien Grammond

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

In Canada, certain Indigenous groups are struggling to obtain official recognition of their status and rights. This is particularly so in Newfoundland and Labrador, where the authorities took the stance, when the province joined Canada in 1949, that no one would be legally considered Indigenous. This paper analyzes the claims of the Indigenous groups of that province, which have resulted, over the last thirty years, in various forms of official recognition. In particular, this article highlights how the concept of equality was used by these Indigenous groups to buttress their claims. Equality, in this context, was mainly conceived of as …

Who Writes? Gender And Judgment Assignment On The Supreme Court Of Canada, Peter Mccormick Jan 2014

Who Writes? Gender And Judgment Assignment On The Supreme Court Of Canada, Peter Mccormick

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

This article poses the question: Now that women are receiving an increasing share of the seats on the Supreme Court of Canada (the Court), can we conclude with confidence that they have been admitted to full participation, with a mix of judgments—including the more significant decisions—that is fully comparable to their male colleagues? The author looks at the assignment of reasons for judgment on the Court over the last three chief justiceships, with specific reference to the relative rate of assignments to male and female judges. He finds that the male/female gap is more robust than ever, although he also …

Health & Biomedical Sciences Faculty Publications

Background: Psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia (SZ) and bipolar disorder (BP) are projected to lead the global disease burden within the next decade. Several lines of evidence suggest that epigenetic- or genetic-mediated dysfunction is frequently present in these disorders. To date, the inheritance patterns have been complicated by the problem of integrating epigenomic and transcriptomic factors that have yet to be elucidated. Therefore, there is a need to build a comprehensive database for storing epigenomic and transcriptomic data relating to psychiatric disorders.

Description: We have developed the PD_NGSAtlas, which focuses on the efficient storage of epigenomic and transcriptomic data based …

Advanced Doc-Dpf Model To Predict Soot Accumulation And Pressure Drop In Diesel Particulate Filters, Alessandro Cozzolini Jan 2014

Advanced Doc-Dpf Model To Predict Soot Accumulation And Pressure Drop In Diesel Particulate Filters, Alessandro Cozzolini

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Diesel Particulate Filters (DPFs) are regarded as the most effective technology to reduce particulate matter (PM) emissions from modern diesel engines. PM mass collected inside the filter needs to be periodically oxidized to clean the porous walls in order to avoid excessive backpressure that could negatively affect engine and turbocharger performances leading to higher fuel consumption. Diesel Oxidation Catalysts (DOCs), on the other hand, represent an effective means to reduce hydrocarbon (HC) emissions and set the proper chemical conditions at the inlet of the DPF to enhance soot oxidation during filter regeneration. Due to the impact that these devices have …

Using An Ecosystem Approach To Complement Protection Schemes Based On Organism-Level Endpoints, Clare Bradshaw, Lawrence Kapustka, Lawrence Barenthouse, Justin Brown, Philippe Ciffroy, Valery E. Forbes, Stanislav Geras'kin, Ulrik Kautsky, Francois Brechignac

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Radiation protection goals for ecological resources are focused on ecological structures and functions at population-, community-, and ecosystem-levels. The current approach to radiation safety for non-human biota relies on organism-level endpoints, and as such is not aligned with the stated overarching protection goals of international agencies. Exposure to stressors can trigger non-linear changes in ecosystem structure and function that cannot be predicted from effects on individual organisms. From the ecological sciences, we know that important interactive dynamics related to such emergent properties determine the flows of goods and services in ecological systems that human societies rely upon. A previous Task …

Electrostatic Charge Effects On Pharmaceutical Aerosol Deposition In Human Nasal-Laryngeal Airways, Jinxiang Xi, Xiuhua Si, Worth Longest

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

Electrostatic charging occurs in most aerosol generation processes and can significantly influence subsequent particle deposition rates and patterns in the respiratory tract through the image and space forces. The behavior of inhaled aerosols with charge is expected to be most affected in the upper airways, where particles come in close proximity to the narrow turbinate surface, and before charge dissipation occurs as a result of high humidity. The objective of this study was to quantitatively evaluate the deposition of charged aerosols in an MRI-based nasal-laryngeal airway model. Particle sizes of 5 nm-30 μm and charge levels ranging from neutralized to …

The Emergence Of Behavioral Addiction In Dsm-5, Gina B. Polychronopoulos, Kristy L. Carlisle, Robert M. Carlisle, Andrea J. Kirk-Jenkins

Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Faculty Publications

The release of the latest edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) has sparked continuous debate about the structure, organization, and inclusion or exclusion of mental disorders. The term addiction made its first appearance in the manual with the category of Substance-Related and Addictive Disorders, after much anticipation from mental health professionals. With the emergence of behavioral (process) addictions in the diagnostic manual such as gambling disorder, it is likely that other mental disorders with similar features will follow suit. Speculation about other behaviors that could potentially be addictive includes Internet use, sex, shopping, exercise, and …
