Variations In Fast Food Habits Between Males And Females At Grand Valley State University, Brittany Ballew Jan 2014

Variations In Fast Food Habits Between Males And Females At Grand Valley State University, Brittany Ballew

Honors Projects

The objectives of this study were to determine how often Grand Valley State University (GVSU) students’ frequent fast food restaurants, as well as look at the different fast food establishments in the surrounding campus area in an effort to expose the most patronized types of fast food. The main goal was then to investigate patterns between males and females related to menu choices and taste perceptions as well as the most prominent types of influences related to the nutritional, social, and emotional motives behind fast-food outings and purchases. Surveys were distributed to 49 males and 47 females (full-time, traditional college …

Turning The World Upside Down: How Frames Of Reference Shape Environmental Law, James Salzman, Martin Doyle Jan 2014

Turning The World Upside Down: How Frames Of Reference Shape Environmental Law, James Salzman, Martin Doyle

Models and representations help us understand complex phenomena. The Mercator map presents a familiar, two-dimensional view of our three-dimensional world, for example, but it can distort as much as it clarifies. In the natural sciences, too, there are very different ways of framing reality. The classic method developed by Leonard Euler measures a system from a fixed point. A competing method developed by Joseph Louis Lagrange measures from the perspective of a particle moving within the system. These Eulerian and Lagrangian methods of measurement dominate the physical sciences and provide different, though equally valid, measures of how the system operates. …

Competing With The “Patent Court”: A Newly Robust Ecosystem, Arti K. Rai Jan 2014

Competing With The “Patent Court”: A Newly Robust Ecosystem, Arti K. Rai

Faculty Scholarship

In a provocative address, Chief Judge Wood of the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals suggests exposing the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, created in 1982 to hear all appeals from patent cases, to competition from sister appellate courts. This response, published as part of a Symposium on Chief Judge Wood's address, argues that competition is indeed desirable. Whether such competition is best provided by other appellate courts is unclear, however. The more tractable approach is to improve competitive input from sources that have already emerged. These include dissenting Federal Circuit judges, parties and amici who are not "patent …

Consumption, Risk And Prioritarianism, Matthew D. Adler, Nicolas Treich Jan 2014

Consumption, Risk And Prioritarianism, Matthew D. Adler, Nicolas Treich

Faculty Scholarship

In this paper, we study consumption decisions under risk assuming a prioritarian social welfare function, namely a concave transformation of individual utility functions. Under standard assumptions, there is always more current consumption under ex ante prioritarianism than under utilitarianism. Thus, a concern for equity (in the ex ante prioritarian sense) means less concern for the risky future. In contrast, there is usually less current consumption under ex post prioritarianism than under utilitarianism. We discuss the robustness of these results to learning, and to other forms of prioritarian social welfare functions.

Dissolved Oxygen Dynamics And Modeling - A Case Study In A Subtropical Shallow Lake, Zhen Xu Jan 2014

Dissolved Oxygen Dynamics And Modeling - A Case Study In A Subtropical Shallow Lake, Zhen Xu

LSU Master's Theses

As one of the most valued and treasured natural resources, today many lakes in the world face degradation of their water quality due to nutrient enrichment, toxic contamination, and hydrological modification from their drainage areas. Among various water quality impairments, dissolved oxygen (DO) depletion is often a leading stressor in lake systems. Despite numerous studies on DO in deep water lakes in temperate regions, the knowledge of DO dynamics in eutrophic shallow lakes in subtropical regions is still limited. This thesis research conducted intensive DO monitoring in an eutrophic shallow lake in south Louisiana to characterize diel cycles of DO …

The Environmental Impact Of Urbanization Within Abu Dhabi On The Microbial Profile Of Man-Made Beaches, Fatima Al Marzooqi, Fatme Al Anouti

All Works

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is witnessing a significant development in several areas. Many new construction projects are currently underway. One of the main project aims at establishing new beaches around the coastal areas of the UAE. Particularly, in Abu Dhabi the capital of UAE, a new man-made beach has been recently developed in the north coast of the city. The urbanization of this newly developed beach might have a significant impact on the environment. This study aims to investigate the effects of urban development of beaches within Abu Dhabi on the microbial profile of the soil. It is hypothesized …

Exploring The Utilization Of Non-Invasive Methods For Assessing Health Statusof Patients With Chronic Respiratory Inflammation Within The United Arabemirates, Fatme Al Anouti

All Works

Asthma is defined as the chronic inflammation of the large airways that is characterized by reversible airflow obstruction and airway hyper-responsiveness. On the other hand, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a chronic inflammation that is marked by progressive and irreversible airflow obstruction. Both conditions are manifested by symptoms of wheezing, coughing, and shortness of breath. Similarity in symptoms between these two conditions could lead to misdiagnosis and mistreatment. Although inflammation is present in both conditions, there are some marked differences. The main difference is that inflammation in asthma is an IgE mediated and involves the release of histamine while …

Investigating A Win, Win Situation: Delivering Quality Swimming Experiences For Children In Local Primary Schools Within The Gippsland Region, Via Teacher Education., Tj Lynch

Plymouth Institute of Education

The purpose of this paper is to reflect on the “commitment to action” designed by ministers of education, which act as stepping stones during implementation of the Melbourne Declaration on Educational Goals for Young Australians. The reflection conceptualises what these goals look like in practice within the Health and Physical Education (HPE) key learning area. “Swimming and water safety” for both pre-service teachers and children in Primary schools was implemented, which in hindsight provided a win-win situation. Furthermore, a framework enabling sustainable swimming education within the Gippsland rural community was developed. There were barriers to be overcome and amendments identified …

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

AbstractParasites play key ecological and evolutionary roles through the costs they impose on their host. In wild populations, the effect of parasitism is likely to vary considerably with environmental conditions, which may affect the availability of resources to hosts for defense. However, the interaction between parasitism and prevailing conditions is rarely quantified. In addition to environmental variation acting on hosts, individuals are likely to vary in their response to parasitism, and the combined effect of both may increase heterogeneity in host responses. Offspring hierarchies, established by parents in response to uncertain rearing conditions, may be an important source of variation …

Cardiopulmonary Exercise Capacity And Preoperative Markers Of Inflammation, Pervez Sultan, Mark R. Edwards, Ana Gutierrez Del Arroyo, David Cain, J. Robert Sneyd, Richard Struthers, Gary Minto, Gareth L. Ackland

More Faculty of Health Research

Explanatory mechanisms for the association between poor exercise capacity and infections following surgery are underexplored. We hypothesized that aerobic fitness - assessed by cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) - would be associated with circulating inflammatory markers, as quantified by the neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and monocyte subsets. The association between cardiopulmonary reserve and inflammation was tested by multivariable regression analysis with covariates including anaerobic threshold (AT) and malignancy. In a first cohort of 240 colorectal patients, AT was identified as the sole factor associated with higher NLR (P = 0.03) and absolute and relative lymphopenia (P = 0.01). Preoperative leukocyte subsets and …

Implications Of Localism In Educational Policy On The Aspirations Of Young People In Cornwall, Ra Boyask, T Rees, C Gristy, H Knowler

Plymouth Institute of Education

The physical location of Cornwall, England impacts upon its social and economic development and is evident in the aspirations ascribed to and held by young people within the region. Schools have been set the task of raising aspirations, as low expectations are perceived to be a barrier to high attainment in schooling. We draw upon research in two Cornish secondary schools that attempted to raise aspirations through school change and by entering into the Academy schools programme. What we found was that their location was generally perceived as a disadvantage to aspiration. We suggest that within the current climate of …

School of Biomedical Sciences

Objectives. Most developmental processes are under the control of small regulatory RNAs called microRNAs (miRNAs). We hypothesize that different fetal developmental processes might be reflected by extracellular miRNAs in maternal plasma and may be utilized as biomarkers for the noninvasive prenatal diagnosis of chromosomal aneuploidies. In this proof-of-concept study, we report on the identification of extracellular miRNAs in maternal plasma of Down syndrome (DS) pregnancies.Methods. Using high-throughput quantitative PCR (HT-qPCR), 1043 miRNAs were investigated in maternal plasma via comparison of seven DS pregnancies with age and fetal sex matched controls.Results. Six hundred and ninety-five miRNAs were identified. Thirty-six significantly differentially …

Insulin Acutely Improves Mitochondrial Function Of Rat And Human Skeletal Muscle By Increasing Coupling Efficiency Of Oxidative Phosphorylation., Raid B. Nisr, Charles Affourtit Jan 2014

Insulin Acutely Improves Mitochondrial Function Of Rat And Human Skeletal Muscle By Increasing Coupling Efficiency Of Oxidative Phosphorylation., Raid B. Nisr, Charles Affourtit

School of Biomedical Sciences

Insulin is essential for the regulation of fuel metabolism and triggers the uptake of glucose by skeletal muscle. The imported glucose is either stored or broken down, as insulin stimulates glycogenesis and ATP synthesis. The mechanism by which ATP production is increased is incompletely understood at present and, generally, relatively little functional information is available on the effect of insulin on mitochondrial function. In this paper we have exploited extracellular flux technology to investigate insulin effects on the bioenergetics of rat (L6) and human skeletal muscle myoblasts and myotubes. We demonstrate that a 20-min insulin exposure significantly increases (i) the …

What's In A Name? What Have Taxonomy And Systematics Ever Done For Us?, David T. Bilton

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

There is increasingly little doubt that we are in the midst of an anthropogenically driven extinction event which may end up rivalling the mass extinctions of the geological past (Barnosky et al., 2011). Increasingly the world’s natural and seminatural habitats are being irreversibly transformed by human populations, meaning that much of global biodiversity is under threat (see Caro et al., 2011 on remaining intact ecosystems). Given this “biodiversity crisis” and the fact that biodiversity is ultimately essential to human survival on this planet (e.g. Juniper, 2013) one might expect that the basic science underpinning the study of biodiversity would be …

Is The White Collar Offender Privileged?, Samuel W. Buell Jan 2014

Is The White Collar Offender Privileged?, Samuel W. Buell

Duke Law Journal

Much public commentary has asserted or implied that the American criminal-justice system unjustly privileges individuals who commit crimes in corporations and financial markets. This Article demonstrates that this claim is not accurate—at least not in the ways commonly believed. Law and practice of sentencing, evidence, and criminal procedure cannot persuasively be described as privileging the white collar offender. Substantive criminal law makes charges in white collar cases easier to bring and harder to defend against than in other cases. Enforcement institutions, and the political economy in which they exist, include features that both shelter corporate offenders and heighten their exposure …

A Review Of Critical Care Management Of Maternal Sepsis, Madiha Hashmi, Fazal Hameed Khan Jan 2014

A Review Of Critical Care Management Of Maternal Sepsis, Madiha Hashmi, Fazal Hameed Khan

Department of Anaesthesia

Sepsis is a leading cause of preventable maternal mortality in developing countries due to poverty, home deliveries by untrained persons in unhygienic conditions, limited access to healthcare facilities and lack of availability of antibiotics. Recent confidential enquiries into maternal deaths from the developed nations have revealed an increase in maternal mortality secondary to genital tract sepsis and provision of suboptimal critical care. Early recognition of critical illness in obstetric patients, involvement of intensive care teams earlier and provision of same standard of critical care to pregnant women as non-pregnant patients while being mindful of the altered maternal physiology and fetal …

Right Ventricular Perforation: A Rare Complication Of Pulmonary Artery Catheterization, Khalid Ahsan, Mohammad Hamid, Saulat H. Fatimi, Ijaz Hidayat

Department of Anaesthesia

A 70 years old male underwent Coronary Artery Bypass and Graft (CABG) surgery. After induction, a Pulmonary Artery Catheter (PAC) was inserted via right IJV with some difficulty in achieving PA tracing. During distal RCA anastomosis, surgeon noticed PAC tip coming out of Right Ventricular (RV) surface. Resistance was felt on trying to pull PAC, so it was left there. Cardiac surgeon then opened the Right Atrium (RA) and pulled out the catheter. Multiple attempts during insertion of PA catheter should always raise the suspicion of PAC tip slipping back into the RV. It should be closely monitored during surgery …

Rare Presentation Of Posterior Reversible Encephalopathy Syndrome (Pres) And Neurogenic Stunned Myocardium In A Patient After Emergency Cesarean Section, Ausaf Ahmed Khan, Khalid Samad, Kashif Munshi, Madiha Hashmi Jan 2014

Rare Presentation Of Posterior Reversible Encephalopathy Syndrome (Pres) And Neurogenic Stunned Myocardium In A Patient After Emergency Cesarean Section, Ausaf Ahmed Khan, Khalid Samad, Kashif Munshi, Madiha Hashmi

Department of Anaesthesia

Posterior Reversible Encephalopathy Syndrome (PRES) is clinically characterized by seizures, lethargy, nausea and visual impairment. These findings are thought to be due to vasogenic edema, predominantly in the posterior cerebral hemispheres and are reversible with appropriate management. Neurogenicstunned myocardium is a syndrome of reversible left ventricular dysfunction, associated with excessive sympathetic discharge states like pheochromocytoma, high-grade subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), status epilepticus and significant emotional stress. Here, we report a case of PRES and Neurogenic-stunned myocardium occurring simultaneously in a 25 year old primigravida at 34 weeks of gestation with twin pregnancy who presented to the emergency department with eclampsia and …
