Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

IR LASER-INDUCED PERTURBATIONS OF THE VOLTAGE-DEPENDENT SOLUTE CARRIER PROTEIN, SLC26A5. Oluwarotimi S. Nettey and Joseph Santos-Sacchi. Sections of Otolaryngology and Neurobiology, Department of Surgery, Yale University, School of Medicine, New Haven, CT.

Alterations in membrane capacitance can arise from linear and nonlinear sources. For example, changes in membrane surface area or dielectric properties can modify capacitance linearly, whereas sensor residues of voltage-dependent proteins can modify capacitance nonlinearly. Here, we examined the effects of fast temperature jumps induced by an IR laser in control and prestin (SLC26a5)-transfected HEK cells under whole cell voltage clamp. Prestin's voltage sensor imparts a characteristic bell- …

Exploring Social Networking Technologies As Tools For Hiv Prevention For Men Who Have Sex With Men In Connecticut, Jorge Augusto Ramallo

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

This study examined the use of social networking technologies (SNTs) and their potential utilization in HIV prevention interventions among HIV positive and HIV negative men who have sex with men (MSM). We conducted 5 focus groups and 1 individual interview of HIV positive and HIV negative individuals (total 34). All participants were recruited with the help of a local non –profit organization and through a Facebook event advertised in neighboring LGBT establishments.

MSM tend to compartmentalize and separate their gay social networks. SNTs are the main way in which MSM meet new sexual partners. Young MSM are high users and …

More specifically, it attempted to elucidate key processes and moments of vulnerability around the time period of initiating sex …

The Contribution Of Place To Disparities In Life Expectancy And Cardiovascular Outcomes, Brian Wayda Jan 2014

The Contribution Of Place To Disparities In Life Expectancy And Cardiovascular Outcomes, Brian Wayda

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Socioeconomic disparities in health are well-documented, but the precise reasons for these disparities are poorly understood. Traditional explanations for health disparities focus on the influence of person-level disadvantages, such as those related to income, education, and health insurance status. However, the contribution of place to these health disparities is increasingly appreciated. By "place", we refer to the sum of the environmental and community-level factors that may contribute to health, as distinguished from person-level disadvantages associated with low socioeconomic status (SES).

These contextual factors can be categorized as 1) characteristics of the built environment (e.g. access to healthy food, space for …

Genome-Wide Sequencing Of Small Rnas Reveals A Tissue-Specific Loss Of Conserved Microrna Families In Echinococcus Granulosus, Yun Bai, Zhuangzhi Zhang, Lei Jin, Hui Kang, Yongquiang Zhu, Lu Zhang, Xia Li, Fengshou Ma, Li Zhao, Et Al. Jan 2014

Genome-Wide Sequencing Of Small Rnas Reveals A Tissue-Specific Loss Of Conserved Microrna Families In Echinococcus Granulosus, Yun Bai, Zhuangzhi Zhang, Lei Jin, Hui Kang, Yongquiang Zhu, Lu Zhang, Xia Li, Fengshou Ma, Li Zhao, Et Al.

PCOM Scholarly Works

Background: MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are important post-transcriptional regulators which control growth and development in eukaryotes. The cestode Echinococcus granulosus has a complex life-cycle involving different development stages but the mechanisms underpinning this development, including the involvement of miRNAs, remain unknown. Results: Using Illumina next generation sequencing technology, we sequenced at the genome-wide level three small RNA populations from the adult, protoscolex and cyst membrane of E. granulosus. A total of 94 pre-miRNA candidates (coding 91 mature miRNAs and 39 miRNA stars) were in silico predicted. Through comparison of expression profiles, we found 42 mature miRNAs and 23 miRNA stars expressed with …

“Sticky” Arbitration Clauses? The Use Of Arbitration Clauses After Concepcion And Amex, Peter B. Rutledge, Christopher R. Drahozal Jan 2014

“Sticky” Arbitration Clauses? The Use Of Arbitration Clauses After Concepcion And Amex, Peter B. Rutledge, Christopher R. Drahozal

Scholarly Works

We present the results of the first empirical study of the extent to which businesses have switched to arbitration after AT&T Mobility LLC v. Concepcion. The Supreme Court’s decision in Concepcion led commentators to predict that every business soon would use an arbitration clause, coupled with a class arbitration waiver, in their standard form contracts to avoid the risk of class actions. We examine two samples of franchise agreements: one sample in which we track changes in arbitration clauses since 1999, and a broader sample focusing on changes since 2011, immediately before Concepcion was decided. Our central finding is consistent …

Ignorance, Harm, And The Regulation Of Performance-Enhancing Substances, Lisa Milot Jan 2014

Ignorance, Harm, And The Regulation Of Performance-Enhancing Substances, Lisa Milot

Scholarly Works

There is a disconnect between how legal and sporting authorities, on the one hand, and many elite athletes, on the other, view the use of performance-enhancing substances. While official and popular narratives portray the use of these substances as isolated examples of deviant behavior, to the elite athletes who daily push their bodies beyond societally normal limits of pain and risk, enhancement is oftentimes an accepted part of the job. As a result, efforts to regulate and detect athletes’ use of these substances have consistently captured only a small fraction of the use that exists.

This Article describes the ways …

The Great Writ In The Peach State: Georgia Habeas Corpus, 1865-1965, Donald E. Wilkes Jr.

Scholarly Works

There is a plenitude of scholarly writing on the Great Writ of Habeas Corpus, which is universally recognized as "one of the decisively differentiating factors between our democracy and totalitarian governments."' The overwhelming majority of these scholarly publications are concerned with the writ of habeas corpus as administered in the federal court system. There are far fewer scholarly publications on the writ of habeas corpus as administered in the courts of the State of Georgia, and most of these works are concerned with Georgia habeas corpus as a state postconviction remedy, past and present. Only one scholarly piece, a law …

Teaching “The Wire”: Crime, Evidence, And Kids, Andrea L. Dennis

Scholarly Works

I have a confession: I have only watched Season 1 of The Wire, and it has been many years since I did that. Thus, both my knowledge and pedagogical use of the show are limited. What explanation can I offer for my failings? I am a Maryland native with family who resides in Baltimore City, or Charm City as it is affectionately called. I worked for several years as an assistant federal public defender in Baltimore City. Over time, I have seen the city evolve, and I have seen it chew up and spit out many good people and some …

Who Trusts Twitter? Openness To Ideas As A Predictor Of Trust And Interest In News Of An International Disaster Presented In Twitter And Traditional On-Line Journalism Formats, Emily J. Dunn, Greg Feldman, Alandra Klove, Christine Lowery, Kelly Pelham Jan 2014

Who Trusts Twitter? Openness To Ideas As A Predictor Of Trust And Interest In News Of An International Disaster Presented In Twitter And Traditional On-Line Journalism Formats, Emily J. Dunn, Greg Feldman, Alandra Klove, Christine Lowery, Kelly Pelham

Modern Psychological Studies

Twitter is an increasingly utilized tool for communication during major events including natural disasters; however, there is little research investigating this topic and how individual differences might predict reactions to information in this medium. The current study seeks to understand how the personality trait of openness to ideas predicts perceptions of a Twitter source's trustworthiness and interest relative to a journalistic source. Participants were randomly assigned to read a simulated account of a flood presented either as a Twitter account or a journalistic account and then rated perceptions of the sources. Results indicate that Twitter is trusted less than a …

Milestones For Animal Welfare: Public Prosecutor V. Ling Chung Yee Roy, Alvin W. L. See Jan 2014

Milestones For Animal Welfare: Public Prosecutor V. Ling Chung Yee Roy, Alvin W. L. See

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

Animal law is a little-known subject in Singapore. However, the increase in public awareness and concern about animal welfare issues demand that more attention is directed at the legal aspects of such issues. An opportunity to examine this area of the law arose in the case of Ling Chung Yee Roy. The District Court, presided by District Judge Ng Peng Hong, had to decide whether the accused was guilty of an animal cruelty offence under s. 42(1)(e) of the Animals and Birds Act. The majority of animal cruelty complaints were against pet owners, of which a significant number concerned the …

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

The goals of all ASEAN member states are to “accelerate economic growth, social progress and cultural development” and “promote peace and stability” in the region. To achieve these goals, the public will need to trust and respect the Judiciary. Such trust and respect can be lost if there are inefficient practices that result in delay in the courts. The Singapore Judiciary is presently lauded for “its efficiency, its technological sophistication, its accessibility and the confidence of Singapore’s citizens and businesses in the system.” The World Economic Forum has also ranked Singapore first (out of 142 countries) in recognition of Singapore’s …

In Territorio Veritas? Bringing Geographical Coherence Into The Ambiguous Definition Of Geographical Indications Of Origin, Irene Calboli Jan 2014

In Territorio Veritas? Bringing Geographical Coherence Into The Ambiguous Definition Of Geographical Indications Of Origin, Irene Calboli

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

In this article, I criticize what I call “ambiguous geographical origin” in the concept of geographical indications of origin (GIs) and note that the current definition of GIs in Art. 22(1) of TRIPS essentially misuses, or at least misinterprets, of the terms “geographical origin.” More specifically, I expose the partial inconsistency between the legal definition under TRIPs and the dictionary definition of the terms “geographical” and “origin”. In this respect, I point out that, from a strictly linguistic standpoint, the term “geographical”, in its variation as “geographic”, is defined as “of or relating to geography” and as “belonging to or …

Evaluating The Impact Of Lean On Employee Ergonomics, Safety, And Job Satisfaction In Manufacturing, Amanda Morse

LSU Master's Theses

The goal of this study was to explore the proposed relationship between employee satisfaction, ergonomics, and safety while implementing a Kaizen event. In order to address this goal, two Kaizen events (K1 and K2) were conducted in a heavy equipment manufacturing plant. Before and after both events, levels of employee satisfaction were documented for Kaizen and Non-Kaizen (NK) participants using the Job Diagnostic Survey (JDS). The objective of the first event (K1) was to improve the efficiency of the task of torqueing the rear axle bolts in Station #1- skid assembly. The K1 methodology followed a traditional Kaizen structure, enhanced …

Predictors Of Head Start And Child-Care Providers’ Healthful And Controlling Feeding Practices With Children Aged 2 To 5 Years, Dipti A. Dev, Brent A. Mcbride, Katherine E. Speirs, Sharon M. Donovan, Hyun Keun Cho

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications

Few child-care providers meet the national recommendations for healthful feeding practices. Effective strategies are needed to address this disparity, but research examining influences on child-care providers’ feeding practices is limited. The purpose of this study was to identify determinants of child-care providers’ healthful and controlling feeding practices for children aged 2 to 5 years. In this cross-sectional study, child-care providers (n = 118) from 24 center-based programs (six Head Start [HS], 11 Child and Adult Care Food Program [CACFP] funded, and seven non-CACFP) completed selfadministered surveys during 2011-2012. Multilevel multivariate linear regression models were used to predict seven feeding practices.Working …

Examining Identity Consolidation Processes Among Ethnic Minority Gay Men And Lesbians, Heather R. Kennedy, Rochelle L. Dalla

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications

Past scholarship has demonstrated shortcomings in developmental theories for both sexual and ethnic identity. Furthermore, identity development may be especially challenging for members of multiple minority groups facing significant social stressors. The primary goal of this study was to explore identity consolidation processes among individuals with intersecting minority identities. Using in-depth, personal interviews and self-report measures, data were collected from 16 ethnic minority gay men and lesbians. Themes such as acceptance, invisibility, and fear confirm the influence of social context on identity integration. Findings revealed differing magnitudes of consolidation. Greater social support and educational endeavors were critical factors in distinguishing …

The Relationship Between Stress And Dementia: An Investigation Of Physiological And Psychological Connections Across The Lifespan, Andrew Kuck Jan 2014

The Relationship Between Stress And Dementia: An Investigation Of Physiological And Psychological Connections Across The Lifespan, Andrew Kuck

Honors Projects

While many studies have examined the relationship between stress and dementia, there is no general consensus on what the relationship is, or even whether such a relationship exists at all (Fountoulakis, 2011; Wang, 2012). This literature review consequently considers a broad range of hypotheses on the topic. The central focus of this review was to identify what aspects of stress – throughout life – increase the likelihood of dementia in the elderly. The available research indicates that there is indeed a relationship between stress and dementia, and that stress interacts with dementia risk in multiple ways. There is, first of …

First Female Directors: Market Response, Elizabeth Fredericks Jan 2014

First Female Directors: Market Response, Elizabeth Fredericks

Honors Projects

There has been an ongoing debate over women’s impact on corporations, specifically in top executive roles. This study looks at the stock price reaction to the appointment of the first female to the board of directors of Fortune 250 companies. Using the Fama-French three factor model we observed the abnormal stock price reaction that occurred when a company announced the first woman being appointed. Analysis revealed that although the initial stock price reaction was zero, the post-five year returns were statistically significantly positive. This is the first study to show that having a woman on a firm’s board of directors …
