“Technoference”: The Interference Of Technology In Couple Relationships And Implications For Women’S Personal And Relational Well-Being, Brandon T. Mcdaniel, Sarah M. Coyne

Faculty Publications

Technology use has proliferated in family life; everyday intrusions and interruptions due to technology devices, which we term “technoference,” will likely occur. We examine the frequency of technoference in romantic relationships and whether these everyday interruptions relate to women’s personal and relational well-being. Participants were 143 married/cohabiting women who completed an online questionnaire. The majority perceived that technology devices (such as computers, cell or smartphones, or TV) frequently interrupted their interactions, such as couple leisure time, conversations, and mealtimes, with their partners. Overall, participants who rated more technoference in their relationships also reported more conflict over technology use, lower relationship …

A Spatially Resolved Pressure-Based Approach To Evaluate Combined Effects Of Human Activities And Management In Marine Ecosystems, F Goodsir, Hj Bloomfield, Ad Judd, Et Al Dec 2014

A Spatially Resolved Pressure-Based Approach To Evaluate Combined Effects Of Human Activities And Management In Marine Ecosystems, F Goodsir, Hj Bloomfield, Ad Judd, Et Al

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Our oceans are heavily utilized by a wide variety of human activities that exert pressures which negatively impact marine ecosystems, occasionally leading to unsustainable rates of exploitation. A linkage framework approach can be used to make independent associations between sectors, activities, and the pressures they introduce. However, in reality, many different sectors and their associated activities overlap in time and space, potentially changing the severity of their impact as pressures combine, and undermine the efforts of environmental managers to mitigate the harmful effects of those activities. Here, we present a spatially resolved approach to assess the potential for combined effects …

Religion As A Legal Proxy, Micah Schwartzman Dec 2014

Religion As A Legal Proxy, Micah Schwartzman

San Diego Law Review

In what follows, after briefly summarizing Koppelman’s position, I argue that his view is vulnerable to the charge that using religion as a legal proxy is unfair to those with comparable, but otherwise secular, ethical and moral convictions. Koppelman has, of course, anticipated this objection, but his responses are either ambivalent or insufficient to overcome it. The case for adopting religion as a proxy turns partly on arguments against other potential candidates. In particular, Koppelman rejects the freedom of conscience as a possible substitute. But even if he is right that its coverage is not fully extensive with the category …

How Much Autonomy Do You Want?, Maimon Schwarzschild Dec 2014

How Much Autonomy Do You Want?, Maimon Schwarzschild

San Diego Law Review

At root, the questions of special accommodation and religious adjudicatory independence arise most urgently when a government grows in its reach and ambition. After all, if most areas of life, including those that touch on religious life, are left to people’s private arrangement, then not much special accommodation will be necessary. But when government takes control over more and more areas of life, regulating who shall do what and under what rules and conditions, then clashes with one or another religious way of life are almost inevitable. The dispute over government mandates to provide abortive drugs and contraception, in the …

Anomaly Detection Through Enhanced Sentiment Analysis On Social Media Data, Zhaoxia Wang, Victor Joo, Chuan Tong, Xin Xin, Hoong Chor Chin Dec 2014

Anomaly Detection Through Enhanced Sentiment Analysis On Social Media Data, Zhaoxia Wang, Victor Joo, Chuan Tong, Xin Xin, Hoong Chor Chin

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Anomaly detection in sentiment analysis refers to detecting abnormal opinions, sentiment patterns or special temporal aspects of such patterns in a collection of data. The anomalies detected may be due to sudden sentiment changes hidden in large amounts of text. If these anomalies are undetected or poorly managed, the consequences may be severe, e.g. A business whose customers reveal negative sentiments and will no longer support the establishment. Social media platforms, such as Twitter, provide a vast source of information, which includes user feedback, opinion and information on most issues. Many organizations also leverage social media platforms to publish information …

Effects Of Antihistamines On The Function Of Human Alpha-7 Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptors, Seyedeh Soha Khanian

Theses

The effect of histamine H1 receptor (H1R) antagonists (antihistamines), namely, promethazine (PMZ), orphenadrine (ORP), chlorpheniramine (CLP), pyrilamine (PYR), diphenhydramine (DPH), cetirizine (CTZ), and triprolidine (TRP) were tested on the function of the cloned α7subunit of the human nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (α7-nAChR) expressed in Xenopus oocytes using the two-electrode voltage-clamp technique. Antihistamines inhibited the α7-nAChR in the order of PYR > CLP > TRP > PMZ > ORP ≥ DPH ≥ CTZ. Among antihistamines, PYR showed the highest reversible inhibition of acetylcholine (100 µM) - induced current with IC50 value of 6.2 µM. In contrast, the standard H2-H4R …

Studies On The Initial Stage Of Lipid Oxidation In Bulk Oils, Elizabeth Budilarto Dec 2014

Studies On The Initial Stage Of Lipid Oxidation In Bulk Oils, Elizabeth Budilarto

Dissertations

During the oxidation of bulk oils, oxidation products (i.e. peroxide values, conjugated dienes and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances) are formed gradually and increased sharply at the end of the induction period. Tocopherols were consumed, some water was formed, and micelles increased in size during the induction period of vegetable oils oxidized in bulk. The evidence that the evolution of micellar size was in parallel with the end of induction period corroborates the recognition that micelles are the active site of oxidation. The interactions of α-tocopherol and three synergists: ascorbyl palmitate, phosphatidylcholine and L-lysine were studied in cod liver oil, to …

Romantic Relationship Quality As A Protective Factor Against Suicidal Ideation In Young Adulthood, Darla Marie Still Dec 2014

Romantic Relationship Quality As A Protective Factor Against Suicidal Ideation In Young Adulthood, Darla Marie Still

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Sociological research on suicide often emphasizes Durkheim’s notion that social integration provides protection against self-harm; however, research in medical sociology demonstrates that social relationships are not always beneficial to mental health. With this study, I use the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health to examine how social integration via romantic relationships shapes suicidality in young adulthood. Interestingly, the mere presence of a romantic relationship is not protective against suicidal thoughts; for example, married or cohabiting individuals are no less likely to report suicide ideation than single individuals. However, men and women in high quality romantic relationships are less …

School of Medicine Publications

Schizophrenia is a devastating neuropsychiatric syndrome associated with distributed brain dysconnectivity that may involve large-scale thalamo-cortical systems. Incomplete characterization of thalamic connectivity in schizophrenia limits our understanding of its relationship to symptoms and to diagnoses with shared clinical presentation, such as bipolar illness, which may exist on a spectrum. Using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging, we characterized thalamic connectivity in 90 schizophrenia patients versus 90 matched controls via: (1) Subject-specific anatomically defined thalamic seeds; (2) anatomical and data-driven clustering to assay within-thalamus dysconnectivity; and (3) machine learning to classify diagnostic membership via thalamic connectivity for schizophrenia and for 47 bipolar …

Exposure to the potent synthetic estrogenic compound diethylstilbestrol (DES) during early development has been found to elicit numerous detrimental effects. Prescribed to millions of pregnant women from the 1930s to the 1970s, it has been shown that exposure to DES caused significant reproductive organ abnormalities and dysfunction in both men and women (DES sons and daughters, respectively) who were exposed in utero. A high incidence of psychiatric disorders has also been reported, primarily in adult DES daughters. Because of estrogen's well-known influence on emotion, it has been suggested that exposure to this estrogenic compound may be able to disturb the …

Tgfβr2 Is A Major Target Of Mir-93 In Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma Aggressiveness, X Lyu, W Fang, L Cai, H Zheng, Et Al

School of Biomedical Sciences

BACKGROUND: MiR-17-92 cluster and its paralogues have emerged as crucial regulators of many oncogenes and tumor suppressors. Transforming growth factor-β receptor II (TGFβR2), as an important tumor suppressor, is involved in various cancer types. However, it is in cancer that only two miRNAs of this cluster and its paralogues have been reported so far to regulate TGFβR2. MiR-93 is oncogenic, but its targetome in cancer has not been fully defined. The role of miR-93 in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) still remains largely unknown. METHODS: We firstly evaluated the clinical signature of TGFβR2 down-regulation in clinical samples, and next used a miRNA …

Correlation Between Organizational Memory And Innovative Work Behavior, Arum Etikariena, Hamdi Muluk Dec 2014

Correlation Between Organizational Memory And Innovative Work Behavior, Arum Etikariena, Hamdi Muluk

Makara Human Behavior Studies in Asia

This study aims to determine the relationship between organizational memory and innovative work behavior. The study was conducted on 100 employees from various levels and positions in a company that produce and trade electronic solar equipment. To measure the organizational memory, we used Organizational Memory Scale developed by Dunhamm (2010) with ?=0.75. Then, to measure innovative work behavior, we used Innovative Work Behavior Scale from Janssen (2000) with ?=0.80. The results show that there is positive and significant correlation between organizational memory and innovative workbehavior (r=0.35; p<0.01). Hierarchical-regression analysis shows that (1) altogether education level, job type and organizational memory influences 19% of variance in innovative behavior; (2) when these variables are analysed together, only education level shows significant impact on innovative behavior. We discuss theoretical and methodological reasons for these results and offer future direction for research.

Bite Marks On Skin And Clay: A Comparative Analysis, R K. Gorea, O. P. Jasuja, Abdulwahab Ali Abuderman, Abhinav Gorea

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Bite marks are always unique because teeth are distinctive. Bite marks are often observed at the crime scene in sexual and in physical assault cases on the skin of the victims and sometimes on edible leftovers in burglary cases. This piece of evidence is often ignored, but if properly harvested and investigated, bite marks may prove useful in apprehending and successfully prosecuting the criminals. Due to the importance of bite marks, we conducted a progressive randomised experimental study conducted on volunteers. A total of 188 bite marks on clay were studied. Based on these findings, 93.34% of the volunteers could …

Benthic Macroinvertebrates In Uvas Creek, California, Downstream Of A Reservoir, Carole Ann Foster Dec 2014

Benthic Macroinvertebrates In Uvas Creek, California, Downstream Of A Reservoir, Carole Ann Foster

Master's Theses

I sampled macroinvertebrates in May, July, and October 2008 in Uvas Creek, a reservoir-regulated stream in south Santa Clara County, California, to assess what factors (including canopy closure, turbidity, and stream flow) downstream of the reservoir were related to food availability for rearing juvenile Steelhead (Oncorhynchus mykiss). I found benthic and drifting macroinvertebrate biomass was considerably greater during most months in the more open-canopied two sites in the downstream reach as compared to the densely shaded, more turbid and silty two sites in the upstream reach. Abundance of important drifting aquatic invertebrates in May (chironomids, simuliids, and baetids) was proportional …
