Criminal Law, Bernadette C. Crucilla Dec 2014

Criminal Law, Bernadette C. Crucilla

Mercer Law Review

In this year's criminal law survey, I have taken a cue from my colleagues of past years and included only the most significant cases and statutory amendments. A body of law born from resolving the inherent conflicts between prosecutors and defenders is necessarily in a constant state of change. It is, therefore, impossible to comment on every development within a specific time period. To that end, this Survey limits the discussion to those legal developments with the widest application to Georgia criminal law practitioners for the time period from June 1, 2013 through May 31, 2014.

Finding Addison Mizner: His Scrapbook Testimony, Suzanne B. Kane

Architecture Masters of Science Program: Theses

Through historic archival research, this study focuses on the works of Florida architect Addison Mizner (1872-1933), credited with bringing Spanish/Mediterranean Revival architecture to Palm Beach, Florida in the early 20th century. This thesis is the first to study the works of Mizner through the perspective of his personal scrapbooks. In a state of advanced deterioration, Mizner’s scrapbooks are currently housed in Society of the Four Arts, King Library in Palm Beach, Florida. While a rare and treasured source of their own accord, the importance of the scrapbooks is elevated by the fact that many of Mizner’s buildings have been …

An Urban Continuing Care Retirement Community Of The Twenty First Century, Michael W. Isaac Dec 2014

An Urban Continuing Care Retirement Community Of The Twenty First Century, Michael W. Isaac

Architecture Masters of Science Program: Theses

Maximizing the land-use potential in crowded urban areas by the creation of mixed-use developments built in a high-rise format is more important than ever. In urban environments with high building density the little land that does become available for development must be utilized in a manner not only efficient, but to meet the needs of the community it is constructed within. As the baby boomer generation enters retirement, the senior housing market will experience growth to accommodate the need. Developing senior housing that will provide desirable attributes expected by this generation is necessary. In the urban environment the development of …

The Disappearance Of Controlled Vocabulary In Bibliographic Instruction: In Memoriam?, Stephanie Wiegand Dec 2014

The Disappearance Of Controlled Vocabulary In Bibliographic Instruction: In Memoriam?, Stephanie Wiegand

LOEX Conference Proceedings 2012

At one time controlled vocabulary was an essential component of bibliographic instruction sessions. Today, whispered conversations among librarians and the lack of conference presentations, blog posts, and professional literature on the best use of controlled vocabulary seemingly indicate an evanescence of this content. Yet professional communication channels are also silent on the disappearance of controlled vocabulary. In this session, the presenter will share preliminary results of a regional survey of librarians concerning current instruction trends for controlled vocabulary. Attendees will discuss whether controlled vocabulary still has a place in bibliographic instruction.

Beyond Classroom Evaluation: Structuring Research For Dissemination, Andrea Falcone, Stephanie Wiegand Dec 2014

Beyond Classroom Evaluation: Structuring Research For Dissemination, Andrea Falcone, Stephanie Wiegand

LOEX Conference Proceedings 2012

Librarians often pursue worthwhile classroom evaluations, yet the results of those evaluations do not always reach beyond the water cooler or an administrator’s office door. Whether successful or not, our findings can lead to rapid improvement in instructional methods, but only if we share our knowledge. If the thought of disseminating your research is overwhelming, you are not alone. This interactive session will provide you with techniques for parsing the research process to enable dissemination, especially through formal channels. Participants will draft an action plan for an instruction-related research project, including specific tasks, time horizon, and resource allocation. This session …

Maximizing Student Engagement And Learning With Team-Based Learning, Trudi Jacobson, Judy Carey Nevin Dec 2014

Maximizing Student Engagement And Learning With Team-Based Learning, Trudi Jacobson, Judy Carey Nevin

LOEX Conference Proceedings 2012

Team-based learning (TBL) has the potential to radically reinvent what happens in the classroom and how students learn. TBL is increasingly used in a wide range of disciplines, from the health sciences to criminal justice to art history. While there are few reports of its use in information literacy instruction, librarians who have used it have found it to be transformative. Team-based learning was developed by Larry Michaelsen at the University of Oklahoma in the 1970s. It is distinct from problem-based learning or the informal use of groups.

Team-Based Learning strategies encourage students to take more responsibility for their learning, …

First Proof Of Concept Of Sustainable Metabolite Production From High Solids Fermentation Of Lignocellulosic Biomass Using A Bacterial Co-Culture And Cycling Flush System, Wanying Yao, Sue E. Nokes Dec 2014

First Proof Of Concept Of Sustainable Metabolite Production From High Solids Fermentation Of Lignocellulosic Biomass Using A Bacterial Co-Culture And Cycling Flush System, Wanying Yao, Sue E. Nokes

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

To improve the lignocellulose conversion for ABE in high solids fermentation, this study explored the feasibility of cycling the process through the cellulolytic or/and solventogenic phases via intermittent flushing of the fermentation media. Five different flushing strategies (varying medium ingredients, inoculum supplement and cycling through phases) were investigated. Flushing regularly throughout the cellulolytic phase is necessary because re-incubation at 65 °C significantly improved glucose availability by at least 6-fold. The solvents accumulation was increased by 4-fold using corn stover (3-fold using miscanthus) over that produced by flushing only through the solventogenic phase. In addition, cycling process was simplified by re-incubating …

Why Evidence Matters: Examining The Knowledge And Perception Of Pre-Service Teachers, Stefanie Campbell Dec 2014

Why Evidence Matters: Examining The Knowledge And Perception Of Pre-Service Teachers, Stefanie Campbell

HIM 1990-2015

Evidence-based educational policymaking has become a global phenomenon (Wiseman, 2010). According to the Institute of Education Sciences, evidence-based education is "an integration of the professional wisdom and the best available empirical evidence on making decision about how to deliver instructions" (IES, US Department of Education, 2012). This suggests that best practice requires teachers to ensure that instructional strategies and programs implemented in their classroom have been studied in scientific experiments to determine their effectiveness. The general public, as well as practicing teachers, holds an assumption that educators have knowledge as to what is evidence-based education. However, this is not always …

Melatonin And Neurogenesis: A Comparative Study Of The Efficacy Of Melatonin, Its Precursors, And L-Dopa On Neural Stem Cell Metabolism In Human Adult Neurospheres, Omar Heriba Dec 2014

Melatonin And Neurogenesis: A Comparative Study Of The Efficacy Of Melatonin, Its Precursors, And L-Dopa On Neural Stem Cell Metabolism In Human Adult Neurospheres, Omar Heriba

HIM 1990-2015

Human neurosphere stem cells offer promising potential for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases. Their well characterized multi-potency of differentiating into neurons, astrocytes, and oligodendrocytes when exposed to the optimum exogenous growth factors make them an exciting area of study (38). Finding novel endogenous methods of modulating stem cell metabolism will allow for the safer treatment of various brain disorders (34). In this experiment, melatonin, N-acetylserotonin, L-tryptophan, and L-DOPA are added in three different concentrations to neurospheres suspended in HNSC/GBM media with less than optimal concentrations of exogenous epidermal growth factor (EGF) and fibroblast growth factor (FGF). The alamarBlue assay (resazurin) …

The Role Of School Leadership In Retention Of Girls In School: A Case Study Of One Public Primary School In Morogoro Region Tanzania, Jackline John

Master of Education

The increased enrolment of girls in primary schools has been a tremendous step in improving girls’ access to education in Tanzania. However, the rate at which girls leave primary school before completion seems to be very high. This study explored the role of school leadership in retention of girls in one public primary school in Morogoro region in Tanzania. A case study design and purposive sampling technique was used in this study. Semi structured interviews, focus group discussions and document analysis were used to collect qualitative data for this study. A head teacher, two class teachers of grade five and …

Establishing Causes Of School Dropout Within An Era Of Dropout Preventative Measures: A Study Of A Rural Primary School In Moyo District-Uganda, Andrua Harriet Maiku

Master of Education

Education is a human right that empowers individuals and the society to improve on their livelihood as well as participate in nation building. Uganda was the first Sub-Saharan African country to implement Universal Education (UPE) in 1997 with the intention of providing basic education for all children of school going age. However, research reports indicate Uganda is among the countries with the highest school dropout out rates in primary school. Yet, there are many school dropout preventative interventions in place to strengthen UPE and mitigate the challenges that cause children to leave without completing their basic education. This study sought …

However there is little understanding about the role of SESEMAT on teaching practice. Second I had a …

Head Teacher’S Uptake Of Continuous Professional Development Activities In School Leadership: A Case Of School Health And Reading Program In Uganda, Bariyo Nelson Dec 2014

Head Teacher’S Uptake Of Continuous Professional Development Activities In School Leadership: A Case Of School Health And Reading Program In Uganda, Bariyo Nelson

Master of Education

School improvement largely depends on the quality of school leadership which is also determined by the quality of and sustained professional development of the teaching cadres. School improvement can be possible if teacher participation in leadership is empowered by the leadership skills from the head teacher. In order to ensure school improvement, head teachers need to integrate continuing professional development activities in their school leadership. This study on the head teacher’s uptake of School Health and Reading Program (SHRP) in school leadership was conducted in a public primary school in south-western Uganda to explore how the head teacher integrated SHRP …

Using The Lens Of Gender Responsiveness To Investigate School Leadership Efforts To Keep Girls In School: A Case Study Of A Public Primary School In Kinango Sub County In Kwale County, Kenya, Ruth Ndete Mwangi

Master of Education

In spite of the gender policies that Kenyan government has enacted and the NGOs interventions to support girls’ education, high dropout rates still prevail due to: in school, out of school, political and administrative factors that are still problematic. There has been a plethora of research on barriers to girls’ education although there is paucity of research on the school environment’s potential in curbing the premature termination of girls’ formal education. This qualitative case study was investigating the school leadership efforts to keep girls in school which was evaluated against the Gender Responsiveness lens as seen in the facilitation of …

The Head Teacher’S Experience In Dealing With Noncompliant Teachers In A Secondary School: A Case Of A School In Arua District, Uganda., Okecha Patrick Dec 2014

The Head Teacher’S Experience In Dealing With Noncompliant Teachers In A Secondary School: A Case Of A School In Arua District, Uganda., Okecha Patrick

Master of Education

Effective school leadership is linked to proper management of discipline of teachers that improves teaching and learning of students. Management of teachers’ misconduct is believed to be possible with the head teacher applying the teachers’ discipline management procedures established by MoES. Commitment and discipline of teachers are the key factors to effective curriculum delivery to the students. The issue of noncompliant teachers does not only affect teaching and learning in schools, but also give head teacher hard time to deal with it.This study on head teacher’s experience in dealing with noncompliant teachers was conducted in one secondary school in Uganda …

Exploring The Impact Of Maths Anxiety On Students’ Cognitive Engagement, Timothy Mugendi Njagi Dec 2014

Exploring The Impact Of Maths Anxiety On Students’ Cognitive Engagement, Timothy Mugendi Njagi

Master of Education

Mathematics is internationally accepted as a core subject of great importance, with pressure on students and teachers to achieve as highly as possible. Against a concern in Kenya about low mathematics attainment, this study examines the phenomenon of ‘maths anxiety’, i.e. anxiety experienced when attempting to do, or thinking about mathematics, whether in the classroom or elsewhere. Key themes from the background literature include connections with physical, emotional and psychological disorientation, impairing the logical reasoning skills required for the high order thinking necessary for learning mathematics. A mixed methods case study design was used, set in one mixed secondary school, …
