Interpretations Of Patterns And Actors In The Lapp Fund Documents, Geir Grenersen
Interpretations Of Patterns And Actors In The Lapp Fund Documents, Geir Grenersen
Proceedings from the Document Academy
The Lapp Fund (“Finnefondet” in Norwegian) was an important instrument in the norwegianization policy toward the Sámi and Finnish minorities between 1852 – 1921. Two studies, one from the midst 1950s (Dahl 1957) and one from the early 1980s (Eriksen & Niemi 1981), have been the standard works on this period. Recent archival studies (Grenersen N.d. & Maliniemi 2009, 2010) prove the need for a new look at the Lapp Fund documents. Through a detailed archival study Maliniemi has shown that the Sámi and the Finnish languages was much used in a local political administration. But the documents written in …
Differences In Mathematics And Literacy Achievement Between African American Males And Other 11th-Grade Students, Jeffery Flanigan
Differences In Mathematics And Literacy Achievement Between African American Males And Other 11th-Grade Students, Jeffery Flanigan
College of Education Dissertations
The gap in school performance between African American students and students of other subpopulations has shown up in a range of academic success measures including course grades, test scores, course selection, and college graduation rates (Johnston & Viadero 2000); college and high school grade point averages [GPAs] (Banks & Banks, 2004); and dropout rates (Gordon, 1999; Green, 2001; Irvine & Armento, 2001; Jencks & Phillips, 1998; Kober, 2001; Lee, 2002). These indicators all point to a disturbing pattern in the educational system and beg the question: What is going on with the education of African American males in the United …

Microplastics In Long Island Marine Estuaries, Jessica Steve
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
This study investigated the prevalence of microplastics in Shinnecock Bay and Jamaica Bay on Long Island in New York. Surface water samples were collected with a 200 μ m plankton tow net, filtered onto metal mesh screens, and examined under a dissecting microscope. A total of 517 microplastic particles were found in samples from Shinnecock Bay (0-0.58 particles m-3), and 1,005 particles were found in Jamaica Bay samples (0-3.93 particles m-3). Particles were visually sorted by size, color, and shape. Statistical analyses were performed to analyze microplastic particle diversity, evenness, and any spatial or temporal variation. Attempts to determine source …
Graphene Nanoribbons Elicit Cell Specific Uptake And Drug Delivery Via Activation Of Epidermal Growth Factor Receptors, Sayan Mullick Chowdhury
Graphene Nanoribbons Elicit Cell Specific Uptake And Drug Delivery Via Activation Of Epidermal Growth Factor Receptors, Sayan Mullick Chowdhury
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Ligands such as peptides, antibodies or other epitopes bind and activate specific cell receptors, and can be employed for targeted cellular delivery of pharmaceuticals such as drugs, genes and imaging agents. In this dissertation, I investigate the in vitro and hematological compatibility of oxidized graphene nanoribbons, non-covalently functionalized with PEG-DSPE (1, 2-distearoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphoethanolamine-N[amino(polyethyleneglycol)]) (O-GNR-PEG-DSPE) and evaluate its potential as a drug delivery agent. Although, O-GNR-PEG-DSPE was found to interact with RBC membrane and induce structural changes in them, they did not affect other hematological parameters. In vitro studies showed that these particles activate epidermal growth factor receptors (EGFRs) and elicit cell …
Exploring The Erp And Facial Response To Cocaine And Emotional Cues, Hojin Choi
Exploring The Erp And Facial Response To Cocaine And Emotional Cues, Hojin Choi
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
With the advancement of affective computing technologies, spontaneous and complex emotions that were difficult or even impossible to recognize in the past are rapidly becoming the focus of many research. One intriguing example of these non-basic emotions is drug craving, a sophisticated concept which neuroscientists have studied for a long time. Nevertheless, it is not yet known whether craving is accompanied by a characteristic expressive behavior when it occurs, and only little work has been done on exploring the relationship between craving and facial expressions. In this thesis, we assume that drug-related stimuli can induce craving-related emotional states in drug …
Achieving Regulatory Compliance In Data Management, Sumeet Vijay Bajaj
Achieving Regulatory Compliance In Data Management, Sumeet Vijay Bajaj
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Regulations mandate consistent procedures for information access, processing, and storage. In the United States alone, over 10,000 data management regulations exist in the financial, life sciences, health care and government sectors. A recurrent theme in data management regulations is the need for regulatory compliant storage to ensure data confidentiality, data integrity, audit trails maintenance, data retention, and guaranteed deletion. This thesis describes the design and implementation of several regulatory compliant relational databases and file systems. The systems increase efficiency and lower costs of regulatory compliance through the use of novel cryptographic and system security constructs. The first system described in …
Greendm: A Versatile Tiering Hybrid Drive For The Trade-Off Evaluation Of Performance, Energy, And Endurance, Zhichao Li
Greendm: A Versatile Tiering Hybrid Drive For The Trade-Off Evaluation Of Performance, Energy, And Endurance, Zhichao Li
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
There are trade-offs among performance, energy, and device endurance for storage systems. These trade-offs become more complex in storage system comprising different storage technologies. Designs optimized for one dimension or workload often suffer in another. Therefore, it is important to study the trade-offs so as to be able to adapt the system to workloads. As different types of drives have different traits, tiering hybrid drives are studied more closely. However, previous tiering hybrids are often designed for high throughput, efficient energy consumption, or improving endurance--leaving empirical study on the trade-offs being unexplored. Past endurance studies also lack a concrete model …
The Effects Of Gender Mainstreaming On Maternal And Child Health: A Cross-National Analysis Of Sub-Saharan Africa, Lauren Pandolfelli
The Effects Of Gender Mainstreaming On Maternal And Child Health: A Cross-National Analysis Of Sub-Saharan Africa, Lauren Pandolfelli
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
A substantive body of sociological literature has found that women's status is correlated with improved maternal and child health outcomes in developing countries, and accordingly, proposes policy recommendations for ending discrimination against women. Yet, the sociological literature has not engaged adequately with policy models for improving women's status. I address this gap in the literature by conducting the first cross-national quantitative analysis of gender mainstreaming -the global strategy adopted in 1995 by United Nations member countries for fostering gender equality. Specifically, the dissertation uses two-way fixed effects ordinary least squares regression to estimate the effects of gender-mainstreamed bilateral health aid, …
Low Intensity Vibrations Mitigate Cancer-Induced Bone Loss With Indications Of Reduced Tumor Progression, Gabriel M. Pagnotti
Low Intensity Vibrations Mitigate Cancer-Induced Bone Loss With Indications Of Reduced Tumor Progression, Gabriel M. Pagnotti
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Osteopenia is a comorbidity frequently observed in patients being treated for and recovering from cancer treatment, elevating their risk of fracture. These skeletal losses are compounded by chemotherapy and irradiation, damaging both bone and contents of the marrow, thereby undermining recovery efforts. Exercise is commonly prescribed as a non-pharmacological means of maintaining bone mass. However, in those with compromised bone strength, the loads imposed by rigorous exercises may facilitate a fracture it was intended to prevent. Low intensity vibrations (LIV), a mechanical signal demonstrated as anabolic to bone by biasing mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) towards an osteogenic endpoint, may represent …
Computational Modeling And Analysis Of Cardiac Excitation, Abhishek Murthy
Computational Modeling And Analysis Of Cardiac Excitation, Abhishek Murthy
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Modeling, analysis, and control of cardiac excitation, the biological process cardiac cells undergo on a periodic basis, is indispensable for understanding and countering life-threatening electrical disturbances of the heart, such as atrial and ventricular fibrillation. Modeling involves the derivation of a mathematical/computational representation of the dynamics of cardiac cells and their diffusivity. The key to effective modeling lies in striking a balance between i) precision, the ability of the model to replicate the underlying biological phenomena, and ii) performance, in terms of amenability to automated analysis techniques, such as simulation and formal verification. The techniques of abstraction and compositionality have …
Nitrogen Loading To The South Shore, Eastern Bays, Ny: Sources, Impacts, And Management Options, Isabelle Stinnette
Nitrogen Loading To The South Shore, Eastern Bays, Ny: Sources, Impacts, And Management Options, Isabelle Stinnette
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
The excessive delivery of nitrogen from land into coastal waters can lead to a host of environmental problems including algal blooms, hypoxic zones, habitat loss, and acidification. While many of these environmental problems have manifested themselves within Long Island's coastal bays, the quantity and sources of nitrogen are largely unknown in much of this region, making the development of effective management plans to ameliorate these problems exceedingly difficult. This study was designed to quantify nitrogen loads and sources to Moriches, Quantuck and Shinnecock Bays within the eastern extent of Long Island's South Shore Estuary Reserve. Further this study assessed water …
The Impact Of The National Economy On Supreme Court Decision Making, Joshua Matthew Johnson
The Impact Of The National Economy On Supreme Court Decision Making, Joshua Matthew Johnson
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Is the decision making of the Supreme Court of the United States influenced by the health of the national economy? In the development of the literature on the Supreme Court, scholars have mainly focused on how legal, attitudinal, and strategic considerations impact judicial decision making. There has been less work focusing on exogenous factors such as the economy. In this dissertation, I hypothesize that the Supreme Court is responsive to the national economy during multiple stages of the decision making process of the Court--case selection, voting, and the opinion stage. In a sense, I posit that the justices of the …

Ready, Set, Change: An Exploratory Case Study Of Readiness For Change Within Five New York State Voluntary Child Welfare Agencies, Jennette Allen-Mccombs
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Each year, significant financial resources are expended to implement new policies and programs in an attempt to facilitate organizational change (Fleming, Culler, McCorkle, Becker, & Ballard, 2011). In 2007, the New York State Office of Children and Family Services (OCFS) collaborated with Andrus Center for Learning and Innovation (ACLI) to implement the Sanctuary Model of organizational change within selected voluntary residential child welfare programs that serve youth with behavioral, emotional and social challenges. Since these organizations typically have bureaucratic structures in which culture is maintained through a set of rules and regulations, change may be particularly difficult (Dickinson & Perry, …

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Part I. Design, synthesis and biological evaluation of novel 2,5,6-trisubstituted benzimidazoles targeting FtsZ as antitubercular agents Filamenting temperature-sensitive protein Z (FtsZ), an essential cell division protein, is a promising target for the drug discovery of new-generation antibacterial agents against various bacterial pathogens. As a part of SAR studies on benzimidazoles, we have synthesized a library of 376 novel 2,5,6-trisubstituted benzimidazoles, bearing ether or thioether linkage at the 6-position. In a preliminary HTP screening against Mtb H37Rv, 108 compounds were identified as hits at a cut off values of 5 ìg/mL. Among those hits, 10 compounds exhibited MIC values in the …
Neural Correlates And Peripheral Mirnas Associated With Stress-Related Telomere Shortening, Stephanie Izzi
Neural Correlates And Peripheral Mirnas Associated With Stress-Related Telomere Shortening, Stephanie Izzi
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Telomeres are repetitive nucleoprotein complexes at the ends of chromosomes that provide a protective cap for genomic DNA. Telomere shortening leads to cellular senescence or apoptosis. Accordingly, telomere length is considered both a mechanism and marker for aging. Increased exposure to chronic stress is associated with shorter telomere length. In addition, differences in stress reactivity have been associated with telomere length. Here I will describe several studies identifying neural circuits associated with such telomere shortening, an evaluation of saliva as an appropriate biomaterial to measure telomere length, and an exploration of the role of microRNAs as mediators of stress-related telomere …

Structure Prediction Of Carbon Dioxide Hydrate And Xenon Hydrate, Hongfei Xu
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Gas hydrate technology is one of research focus in recent years, and can be applied to solve problems in energy, environment, and other areas. Previous views had been that most gas hydrates decompose into gas and water (or ice) under 1 GPa or so, thus, research on hydrate structures in past few decades were conducted under low pressure conditions. Recent studies have shown the possibility that new structures of gas hydrate may exist under higher pressure, and this thesis aims to explore the structures of hydrate in carbon dioxide-water system and xenon-water system with the application of high pressure. The …

Proper Handling And Transportation Of Eggs For Sale At Kentucky Farmers’ Markets, Anthony J. Pescatore, Jacquie Jacob
Proper Handling And Transportation Of Eggs For Sale At Kentucky Farmers’ Markets, Anthony J. Pescatore, Jacquie Jacob
Agriculture and Natural Resources Publications
Regardless of the number of eggs produced, and whether the eggs are for home use or sale, careful egg handling is very important. The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) lists eggs as a potentially hazardous food, therefore careful handling is important. In Kentucky, if you sell more than 60 dozen eggs a week you need to purchase a retail license. The same holds true if you want to sell your eggs to a retail store to be re-sold or to a distributor that will sell them for you. If you produce fewer than 60 dozen eggs a week …

Sheep Breeding: Heritability, Ebvs, Epds And The Nsip, Debra K. Aaron
Agriculture and Natural Resources Publications
Genetic improvement in a flock depends on the producer’s ability to select breeding sheep that are genetically superior for traits of economic importance. This is complicated by the fact that an animal’s own performance is not always a true indicator of its genetic potential as a parent.

Modeling Colony Collapse Disorder In Honeybees As A Contagion, Christopher Kribs, Christopher Mitchell
Modeling Colony Collapse Disorder In Honeybees As A Contagion, Christopher Kribs, Christopher Mitchell
Mathematics Faculty Publications - Archive
Honeybee pollination accounts annually for over $14 billion in United States agriculture alone. Within the past decade there has been a mysterious mass die-off of honeybees, an estimated 10 million beehives and sometimes as much as 90% of an apiary. There is still no consensus on what causes this phenomenon, called Colony Collapse Disorder, or CCD. Several mathematical models have studied CCD by only focusing on infection dynamics. We created a model to account for both healthy hive dynamics and hive extinction due to CCD, modeling CCD via a transmissible infection brought to the hive by foragers. The system of …
Friday Exception Scheduling In Transit Systems: An Exploratory Analysis When Data Are Limited, Michael D. Benson, Robert B. Noland
Friday Exception Scheduling In Transit Systems: An Exploratory Analysis When Data Are Limited, Michael D. Benson, Robert B. Noland
Journal of Public Transportation
Most transit agencies operate the same schedule Monday through Friday, except on holidays. Recent work suggests that agencies potentially could save money by operating different schedules on Friday. This research paper aims to identify factors associated with different ridership patterns on Friday, especially when limited data are available. Ridership data for seven bus routes serving Newark, New Jersey, were analyzed, along with characteristics of the routes and areas they serve. These data were limited in that they were provided as a PDF file and were for one month only. Land uses associated with commuting, specifically those with a mix of …
A New Transit Safety Narrative, Todd Litman
A New Transit Safety Narrative, Todd Litman
Journal of Public Transportation
Public transportation is, overall, a relatively safe (low crash risk) and secure (low crime risk) transport mode. Transit travel has about one-tenth the traffic casualty (injury or death) rate as automobile travel, and residents of transit-oriented communities have about onefifth the per capita crash casualty rate as in automobile-oriented communities. Transit also tends to have lower overall crime rates than automobile travel, and transit improvements can help reduce overall crime risk by improving surveillance and economic opportunities for at-risk populations. Despite its relative safety and security, many people consider transit travel dangerous and are reluctant to use it or support …

Use Of Movable Bus Stop Loading Pads: Feasibility And Design Alternatives, Nakin Suksawang, Priyanka Alluri, Albert Gan, Katrina Meneses, Fabian Cevallos, Kirolos Haleem, Dibakar Saha
Journal of Public Transportation
The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990 requires bus stops to be accessible for individuals with disabilities. At a minimum, bus stops must have firm, stable, slip-resistant loading pads with connected sidewalks and curb ramps. Consequently, the typical approach of transit agencies has been to install permanent concrete loading pads at bus stops. This study explored alternatives to conventional concrete pads with movable pads that could be installed quickly, resulting in savings in construction and labor costs and minimizing both disruptions to traffic and impacts to abutting businesses. Potential design alternatives in terms of materials and structural support for …

Conclusion
Although the outcomes of mentoring studies tend to be mixed, mentoring relationships have the potential to be effective, particularly when outcomes are selected and efforts are made to create lasting relationships. Particular considerations for mentoring program developers and practitioners include the length of the mentoring relationship, recruitment and screening of mentors, mentor training, mentee mobility, mentoring activities, and consistent systematic evaluation and modifications of mentoring programs based on data.
There have been no large widespread controlled studies of mentoring, probably due to the wide variation in the variables associated with mentoring programs as discussed earlier, including the goals, populations …

An Environmental Value Engineering (Eve) Emergy Analysis Rubric To Compare High-Speed Passenger Rail And Interstate Passenger Car Transportation Alternatives Through A Fixed Distance, Joseph Threadcraft
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
An Environmental Value Engineering (EVE) analysis was used to conduct an environmental life cycle assessment of transportation alternatives consisting of high-speed passenger rail and interstate passenger car transportation. This analysis was formulated on the EMERGY inputs of environment, fuel energy, goods, and services (labor). EMERGY input tables were calculated based on subsystem inputs for each mode of transportation. Areas of commonality were identified for analysis exclusion while aspects that showed differentiation were included as viable inputs into the calculation of the total EMERGY for each system. The summation of inputs resulted in an overall EMERGY calculation of the alternatives. Subsequently, …
