Faculty Publications

Family Worship is the regular, intentional gathering as a family unit to worship God by reading scripture, praying, singing praise, and finding ways to be involved in ministry and evangelism together. There are four major components to every family worship: “Read – Pray – Sing – Mission.” Every Christian family should have such time daily.

Contemporary Aesthetics: Perspectives On Times, Space And Content, Ossi Naukkarinen Jan 2014

Contemporary Aesthetics: Perspectives On Times, Space And Content, Ossi Naukkarinen

Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)

What is contemporary aesthetics? The answer to this question is often simply stated rather than carefully elaborated, even if the current nature and scope of the discipline is far from self-evident. To examine how both the concept and the field of contemporary aesthetics can be understood, I suggest that it is useful to consider three themes: the time, space, and content of aesthetics, i.e., the questions of when, where, and what contemporary aesthetics is. Through this, it is possible to construe a conceptual space of contemporary aesthetics and to compare different instantiations of it with each other.

Analysis Of The Rocky Boy Reservation’S Border Formation 1885 To 1950, Brendan Arthur Hoover

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

The purpose of this thesis is to analyze the border formation of the Rocky Boy Reservation, which was established in 1916 and is the home of The Chippewa-Cree Tribe. This thesis examines how racialized discourse surrounding The Chippewa-Cree Tribe affected the creation and subsequently the geography of the Rocky Boy Reservation, which is located in north-central Montana near the Canadian border. U.S. Native American policies and their affects on the reservation’s geography are also examined. It is important to analyze discourse and U.S. Native American policy because both influenced the geography of the Rocky Boy Reservation, which significantly contributed to …

'Det Ny Fra Thy': Historical Innovation In A Peripheral Place, Poul Houe Jan 2014

'Det Ny Fra Thy': Historical Innovation In A Peripheral Place, Poul Houe

The Bridge

When we say in English that a certain innovation "takes place" or in Danish: finder sted, which means literally, "finds place" -both linguistic idioms, "takes" or "finds" place, suggest that the role of place is not accidental. This is obviously pivotal in geography, but also in anthropology, sociology, philosophy, and a host of cultural studies, sometimes in the form of "mental geography." Recent Danish book titles suggest as much: Dan Ringgaard's Stedssans (Sense of Place), Anne-Marie Mai's Hvor litteraturen finder sted (Where literature Takes Place) in 3 volumes, and Ringgaard & Mai's anthology Sted (Place).

Implications Of Localism In Educational Policy On The Aspirations Of Young People In Cornwall, Ra Boyask, T Rees, C Gristy, H Knowler

Plymouth Institute of Education

The physical location of Cornwall, England impacts upon its social and economic development and is evident in the aspirations ascribed to and held by young people within the region. Schools have been set the task of raising aspirations, as low expectations are perceived to be a barrier to high attainment in schooling. We draw upon research in two Cornish secondary schools that attempted to raise aspirations through school change and by entering into the Academy schools programme. What we found was that their location was generally perceived as a disadvantage to aspiration. We suggest that within the current climate of …

Metamorphic Evolution Of Precambrian Rocks In The Southern Highland Mountains, Montana, And Implications For Proterozoic Tectonics, David Alan Reioux

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

The southern Highland Mountains, located in southwest Montana, contain a diverse assemblage of high-grade metamorphic rocks cored by migmatized leucocratic orthogneiss, with garnet-sillimanite paragneiss and schist at structurally higher levels. Based on the structure of the metamorphic rocks, O’Neill et al. (1988) hypothesized that the southern Highland Mountains is a gneiss dome. This study evaluates the gneiss dome hypothesis by conducting a petrologic study of the metamorphic rocks in the southern Highland Mountains using thin section analysis and pseudosections to determine if spatial trends in metamorphic conditions consistent with those of gneiss domes exist. In total, six samples were selected …

Stepping Outside: The Shifting Subjectivities Of Post-Romantic Poetry, William John Soloy Jan 2014

Stepping Outside: The Shifting Subjectivities Of Post-Romantic Poetry, William John Soloy

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

This investigation traces the arc of fracturing and exteriorizing subjectivities in the post-Romantic poetries of Modernism and Postmodernism, ultimately considering the state of contemporary Postmodern subjectivity after the Language Poets. Focusing primarily on T.S. Eliot, John Ashbery, and Christian Hawkey, the thesis argues that the I/Other split associated with Romantic poetry’s idealized Othering of nature performs a major shift with the interiorizing fragmentation of the speaker(s) in “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock.” The anxiety produced by this claustrophobic, internal splitting of voices reaches critical mass in the chorus of difficult-to-trace speakers of “The Waste Land,” causing a breach …

An experiment was conducted to understand the responses of 4 dominant psammophyte shrub species to different sandy environments. Pots were filled with tap water or sand, and pots planted with different species and filled with sand with and without pot covers were kept in 4 growth cabinets at 15/25 °C and with a water supply of 75 mm per month. Soil water content; dry weights of roots, shoots, and leaves; and leaf area were measured. The relative growth rate (0.039-0.042 g g^{-1} day^{-1}) was …

Activism And Offense : A Philosophical Analysis, Stef Mcgraw Jan 2014

Activism And Offense : A Philosophical Analysis, Stef Mcgraw

Honors Program Theses

In the realm of interpersonal interactions, there are many pieces of conventional wisdom that dictate how most Americans ought to behave. One such example of this is that Americans ought to “do good” in the world. This could mean simply acting kindly to others, but more often it is meant as taking explicit action to promote positive change in the world. Another social norm is that Americans, particularly Iowans and other Midwesterners1 , ought to “avoid causing offense.” It is not difficult to see how these two norms sometimes collide, since positive change often entails the transformation of social norms …

Incorporating Cold-Air Pooling Into Downscaled Climate Models Increases Potential Refugia For Snow-Dependent Species Within The Sierra Nevada Ecoregion, Ca, Julie K. Young Jan 2014

Incorporating Cold-Air Pooling Into Downscaled Climate Models Increases Potential Refugia For Snow-Dependent Species Within The Sierra Nevada Ecoregion, Ca, Julie K. Young

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

We present a unique water-balance approach for modeling snowpack under historic, current and future climates throughout the Sierra Nevada Ecoregion. Our methodology uses a finer scale (270 m) than previous regional studies and incorporates cold-air pooling, an atmospheric process that sustains cooler temperatures in topographic depressions thereby mitigating snowmelt. Our results are intended to support management and conservation of snow-dependent species, which requires characterization of suitable habitat under current and future climates. We use the wolverine (Gulo gulo) as an example species and investigate potential habitat based on the depth and extent of spring snowpack within four National Park units …

Soil Water Retention Curves For The Major Soil Types Of The Kruger National Park, Robert Buitenwerf, Andrew Kulmatiski, Steven I. Higgins Jan 2014

Soil Water Retention Curves For The Major Soil Types Of The Kruger National Park, Robert Buitenwerf, Andrew Kulmatiski, Steven I. Higgins

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

Soil water potential is crucial to plant transpiration and thus to carbon cycling and biosphere–atmosphere interactions, yet it is difficult to measure in the field. Volumetric and gravimetric water contents are easy and cheap to measure in the field, but can be a poor proxy of plant-available water. Soil water content can be transformed to water potential using soil moisture retention curves. We provide empirically derived soil moisture retention curves for seven soil types in the Kruger National Park, South Africa. Site-specific curves produced excellent estimates of soil water potential from soil water content values. Curves from soils derived from …

Merging And Dissolving Special Districts, Conor Clarke Jan 2014

Merging And Dissolving Special Districts, Conor Clarke

Scholarship@WashULaw

Special district governments exist in every state, providing services ranging from protection against fire to protection against fire ants. These governments are easy to form, but often they are difficult to dissolve or consolidate. Nevertheless, in many states, the number of special district governments is declining. This Comment draws on statistical analyses and interviews with government officials to explain the cause of this decline. It also discusses how existing legal frameworks may be revised to facilitate the efficient consolidation and dissolution of special district governments.

On The Usefulness Of A Flat Economics To The World Of Faith, Andrew P. Morriss Jan 2014

On The Usefulness Of A Flat Economics To The World Of Faith, Andrew P. Morriss

Faculty Scholarship

Is economics unduly flat? Perhaps, sometimes. But part of the power of economics comes from the parsimony of its approach to human nature. If and when we search for more complex approaches, we will need to understand the tradeoffs involved in choosing between that power and simplicity and the alternatives. Rather than deepening our economics with faith, it may be that we are better off using a relatively flat economics to enrich religious understandings.

Mission Statement Clarity And Organizational Behavior At An Art-Focused High School, Michael Allen Mitchell Jan 2014

Mission Statement Clarity And Organizational Behavior At An Art-Focused High School, Michael Allen Mitchell

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Many new institutions struggle with issues of identity and purpose, which can create instability and lack of growth. Mission statements are often used to clearly identify the characteristics that make an organization unique. This study was informed by theories of organizational management, art integration constructivism, and Bronfenbrenner's cultural ecology. The literature indicates that there is a strong connection between a clear and concise mission statement and the organization's behaviors. This study examined a small Southeast Michigan charter school devoted to integrating arts and academic curricula to determine how the stated mission was understood and implemented by its stakeholders. An applied, …

Asthma among children has become an inherent problem in many communities in the United States, especially among the minority population. The South Bronx has a large minority population and a high prevalence of asthma. However, no study to date has explored the factors associated with this high prevalence rates in this population. Drawing from theories of social ecology and environmental health, the objective of this quantitative cross-sectional study is to investigate the correlates of asthma among children in the South Bronx by studying the sociodemographic and environmental risk factors, including parental occupation; neighborhood and housing characteristics, air quality, and poverty. …

Prioritizing Offshore Vendor Selection Criteria For The North American Geospatial Industry, Simon Wolfgang Musaeus Jan 2014

Prioritizing Offshore Vendor Selection Criteria For The North American Geospatial Industry, Simon Wolfgang Musaeus

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The U.S. market for geospatial services totaled US $2.2 billion in 2010, representing 50% of the global market. Data-processing firms subcontract labor-intensive portions of data services to offshore providers in South and East Asia and Eastern Europe. In general, half of all offshore contracts fail within the first 5 years because one or more parties consider the relationship unsuccessful. Despite the high failure rates, no study has examined the offshore vendor selection process in the geospatial industry. The purpose of this study was to determine the list of key offshore vendor selection criteria and the efficacy of the analytic hierarchy …

Play Selection In The Department Of Speech And Drama At Pan American University In The 1970s And 1980s: Twenty Years Of Excluding Latino Plays, Eric Wiley

Theatre Faculty Publications

The theatre program at the University of Texas-Pan American has a long history of excluding Latino plays from its production seasons, even though the university is located near the Mexican border and the majority of its students are Mexican American. The regional population served by this publicly-funded school, which has been state-funded since 1965, is predominantly Mexican American and Spanish speaking. Furthermore, as reflected in its name, the school’s mission has included for more than half a century a commitment to advance the “blending” of the North American and Latin American cultures. This article reviews the school’s production record over …
