Integrating Climate And Geospatial Features Into Machine Learning Models, Abdulaziz Ahmed Aljaziri
Theses
This thesis addresses a significant gap in real estate valuation models by investigating the economic impact of localized climate conditions and granular geospatial amenities. An abstract summarizes the following: - The main themes, ideas or areas of theory being investigated: This research investigates the integration of localized climate conditions and granular geospatial amenities into machine learning (ML) frameworks for residential real estate valuation. - The background and context of the research: In dynamic urban markets like Dubai, traditional valuation models often rely on broad location labels and structural attributes, overlooking the tangible economic impact of environmental comfort and micro-climates in …
Optimizing Delivery Time Predictions Using Machine Learning: A Data-Driven Approach To Last-Mile Logistics, Mohamed Burqaiba
Optimizing Delivery Time Predictions Using Machine Learning: A Data-Driven Approach To Last-Mile Logistics, Mohamed Burqaiba
Theses
This paper addresses how machine learning can be utilized to improve the prediction of delivery times during the last mile, specifically in Dubai urban logistics issues whereby the traffic congestion and weather circumstances usually contribute to unpredictable delivery times. The main goal was to evolve machine learning models that can predict properly delivery time depending on several parameters, i.e., speed of traffic, weather, length of delivery, and geography. The reason why three machine learning models were chosen [Random Forest, Gradient Boosting, and XGBoost] in this analysis is that they have the opportunity to work with non-linear relationships in the data. …
A Machine Learning Framework For Forecasting Passenger Flow At Dubai International Airport, Khalifa Alfalasi
A Machine Learning Framework For Forecasting Passenger Flow At Dubai International Airport, Khalifa Alfalasi
Theses
The fast growth of global air travel made the accurate prediction of passenger flow a challenge for airport operations. Traditional forecasting models, like regression and SARIMA, have been useful in stable conditions but usually do not show the non-linear and dynamic changes driven by weather, infrastructure, and behaviour of passengers. Therefore, recent studies showed the potential of machine learning and big data to improve the accuracy of forecasting. However, most of the work is still limited to specific airports, datasets, or operations. This study develops a machine learning–based predictive framework for short-interval passenger throughput at Dubai International Airport. Using available …

Language teacher educators (LTEs) enter their roles with complex personal histories and experiences. Little research exam-ines the ways in which LTEs of varying backgrounds reflect on these histories, their emotional responses to these reflections, and their connections to cultural contexts or systemic (in)justice. In this article, we treat the examination of our own personalhistories and their intersections with systems of power, as well as our related emotions, as pedagogy or as a reciprocal way ofteaching and learning. We critically map out and discuss our journeys towards an LTE identity, including our emotions, througha reflective, collaborative, and ongoing method we call cartographic …

A Protectorate Divided: The Otjimbingue Petition And Settler Contestations Of Railway Construction In German Southwest Africa, 1897–1902, Marta Millar
Publications and Research
Supporters of the State Railway in German Southwest Africa heralded its construction as ‘the dawn of a new era for the protectorate’ (Windhoeker Anzeiger, 27 October 1898). While railways did enable the expansion of colonial communities, not all settlers wrote as optimistically about this change as did the Anzeiger’s editor. Between 1897 and 1902, familial correspondence and debates in the protectorate’s first newspaper, the Windhoeker Anzeiger, reveal how various settlers negotiated the railroad’s transformative impact on colonial society and their everyday lives. Opposition voices argued that the railroad would harm the fragile colonial economy, serving only …

"Oxygen Is Not For The Dead": Critical And Radical Social Work In Palestine, Nadera Shalhoub-Kevorkian, Stephanie Wahab, Abeer Musleh
School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations
Palestinian poet and novelist Hiba Abu Nada, who was killed by an Israeli airstrike in Gaza on October 20, 2023, at the age of 32, taught us that “Oxygen is not for the dead.” Hiba Abu Nada’s (2017) poem, entitled “Our Loneliness,”1 recognizes survivance (Vizenor, 2010)—that is, the active sense of presence and presencing as an endeavor of creating the future (Simpson, 2017)—and asserts Palestinian embodied connections (Shalhoub-Kevorkian, 2024) to land/life (Khoury, 2019 [2016]):
Social Work In Times Of Genocide: A Palestinian Feminist Praxis Of Social Work, Stephanie Wahab
Social Work In Times Of Genocide: A Palestinian Feminist Praxis Of Social Work, Stephanie Wahab
School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations
The abstract is translated in Arabic below. Social work cannot meaningfully claim a commitment to justice, human dignity, and the worth of people while simultaneously remaining committed to colonial logics. Recognizing and resisting collusion with settler colonialism demands structural shifts in knowledge production, curriculum, practice, and institutional alignment. This article speaks to organized social work’s collusion with the zionist project of Palestinian erasure amid the ongoing Nakba and genocide. Since Palestinian social workers are living and surviving genocide as they practice social work, worn binaries, such as provider–client, are unsettled in ways that make a Palestinian feminist praxis of social …
Ice Surface Change And Flow Dynamics Analysis Of Sít’ Tlein (Malaspina Glacier) Through Remote Sensing, Victor Devaux-Chupin
Ice Surface Change And Flow Dynamics Analysis Of Sít’ Tlein (Malaspina Glacier) Through Remote Sensing, Victor Devaux-Chupin
Geosciences
Sít’ Tlein, located in southeast Alaska, is the largest piedmont glacier in the world. Periglacial lake expansion, low-lying bed, and proximity to the Pacific Ocean put its glacier lobe at risk of rapid retreat. Its disappearance would equate to removing an area of land about half the size of Rhode Island. Sít’ Tlein exhibits complex ice flow responsible for its iconic folded moraines, and for its heterogeneous ice resupply in its lobe, which occasionally surges. This lobe is gradually mantled by debris and vegetation as the ice flow fades towards its margins, protecting it from melting. This the sis is …
Teaching Research As An Interdependent Practice: Bringing Alternate Models Into The Scholarly Conversation, Natalia Kapacinskas, Veronica Arellano Douglas
Teaching Research As An Interdependent Practice: Bringing Alternate Models Into The Scholarly Conversation, Natalia Kapacinskas, Veronica Arellano Douglas
Communications in Information Literacy
The customs and practices of research in academia are often mischaracterized as individualistic pursuits, ignoring the reality that research requires a great deal of collaboration. As teaching librarians, our research instruction often reinforces individualism as a scholarly virtue, even as we simultaneously engage with themes of connection between researchers and their ideas. We propose an approach to teaching research and information literacy grounded in the concept, intention, and practice of interdependence rather than individualism. In doing so, we will call in models of interdependence from critical disability studies, relational-cultural theory, Indigenous Ways of Knowing, and the Cite Black Women movement. …

Insurance Under Fire: Assessing How California’S Insurance Industry Is Tackling The Wildfire Crisis And What’S Next, Mackenzie Paskerian
Insurance Under Fire: Assessing How California’S Insurance Industry Is Tackling The Wildfire Crisis And What’S Next, Mackenzie Paskerian
UC Law Journal
California is currently facing an insurance crisis. The increased impact of climate change, including extreme droughts and wildfires, poses new risks to the insurance industry, especially when it comes to homeowner’s insurance. Insurance providers have limited their homeowner coverage, with many companies leaving the state entirely due to the undervaluation of climate risk in the policies they provide. A so-called “climate insurance bubble” is already beginning to burst. The state’s last-resort public insurance program, the FAIR Plan, has expanded rapidly to fill in for the lack of insurance providers in the state. But because FAIR Plan policies are expensive and …
Decomposition Processes And Insect Indicators In Forensic Investigations, Eli Taylor
Decomposition Processes And Insect Indicators In Forensic Investigations, Eli Taylor
University Honors Theses
Insects play an essential biological and ecological role in human life, and their predictable relationship with decomposing remains has positioned them as a cornerstone of modern forensic science. Since the early 20th century, forensic entomology has provided critical evidence for estimating the postmortem interval (PMI), relying on patterns of colonization, species succession, and insect developmental timelines. Accurate PMI estimations are vital to medicolegal investigations, influencing the interpretation of biological evidence, guiding resource allocation, and informing determinations of cause and manner of death. However, insect activity is profoundly shaped by environmental and ecological variables, including temperature, humidity, seasonal shifts, and geographic …

Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America

The Matter Of Production And Forms Of Sharing: Transformations Of Food Economies In Lowland South America, Clarice Cohn, Diego Madi Dias, Adriana Athila
Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America
This special issue of Tipití presents a critical examination of ‘food economies’ and their transformations within Indigenous communities in Lowland South America. Stemming from seminal ideas in its Anthropology that directly or indirectly discuss ‘food’ (and much of what goes along with it), this edited volume focuses on the materiality of relations as a strategic lens for understanding contemporary Indigenous lives and their transformations, according to how they are perceived by Indigenous peoples themselves and others such as health care professionals and the state. The articles explore how Indigenous foodways—from acquisition to consumption, including sharing and distribution—reveal key aspects …

Historical Context In Mathematics Education: Improving Student Engagement And Achievement, Colette Chilton-Carr
Historical Context In Mathematics Education: Improving Student Engagement And Achievement, Colette Chilton-Carr
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present
There are many informational gaps in contemporary mathematics education. Students see the mathematical topics they are being taught as facts and procedures unrelated to each other or to themselves as mathematicians. Many ancient developments in the realm of mathematics are still relevant today, showcasing the needs that motivated their longstanding evolution. By including the stories behind the formulas in mathematics classrooms, students from diverse backgrounds can feel seen and connected to their education. The inclusion of the holistic background of mathematics cannot be nurtured in the classroom without buy-in on the parts of both students and instructors, as well as …

Wheat stripe rust (Puccinia striiformis f. sp. tritici, Pst) poses a catastrophic threat to global food security. While MADS-box transcription factors regulate development and abiotic stress, their roles in plant-pathogen immunity remain enigmatic. In this study, we identified TaMADS2, a Pst-induced MADS-box gene, as a positive regulator of wheat resistance. Functional analyses demonstrated that TaMADS2 overexpression significantly enhanced Pst resistance, whereas its knockdown rendered wheat more susceptible. Further investigation revealed that TaMADS2 interacts with trichome birefringence-like protein 21 (TaTBL21) to activate glycerol kinase-like (TaGKL) expression. Silencing TaGKL in wild-type or TaMADS2-overexpressing lines …

Institute for ECHO Articles and Research
Offshore wind farm projects are being promoted in the seas surrounding the Korean Peninsula to secure renewable energy. To support site selection, offshore wind resource maps were generated using deep neural networks trained on Sentinel-1 SAR imagery, numerical weather prediction data, offshore wind observations, sea surface temperature, and bathymetry. The deep neural network (DNN) framework consisted of six sub-models targeting eastward and northward wind components across three regions—the Yellow Sea, Korea Strait, and East Sea—to account for spatial heterogeneity. The proposed models outperformed existing approaches, achieving mean absolute errors (MAE) ranging from 1.31 to 1.69 m/s and correlation coefficients (CC) …
