Seasonal Dynamics Of A Suburban Energy Balance In Phoenix, Arizona, Winston T. L. Chow, Thomas J. Volo, Enrique R. Vivoni, G. Darrel Jenerette, Benjamin L. Ruddell

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Observations of local-scale urban surface energy balance (SEB), which include fluxes of net all-wave radiation (Q*), and eddy covariance measurements of sensible (QH) and latent heat (QE) were collected in an arid Phoenix, AZ suburb from January to December 2012. We studied diurnal variations in SEB partitioning over four distinct seasons: winter, equinoxes, and summer; the latter period is further subdivided into (1) months prior to and (2) months occurring during the North American Monsoon. Largest flux densities were observed in summer, with most available energy partitioned into QH. Much less energy is partitioned into QE, but this term is …

Effect Of Recent Historical Events On Migration And Isonymic Stratification Among The Rama Amerindians From Nicaragua, Norberto F. Baldi Mar 2014

Effect Of Recent Historical Events On Migration And Isonymic Stratification Among The Rama Amerindians From Nicaragua, Norberto F. Baldi

Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints

The Rama Amerindians from southern Nicaragua are one of few indigenous populations inhabiting the east coast and lowlands of southern Central America. Early 18th century ethnohistorical accounts depicted the Rama as a mobile hunter-gatherer and horticulturalists group dispersed in household units along southern Nicaraguan rivers. However, during the 19th and 20th centuries, Rama settlement patterns changed to aggregated communities due to increased competition for local resources resulting from non-indigenous immigration. This study’s objective was to discern the degree of relatedness between and within subdivisions of seven of these communities based on patterns of surname variation and genealogical data. We applied …

Lessons Learned From An Inter-Institutional Graduate Course On Interdisciplinary Modeling For Water-Related Issues And Changing Climate, Laurel Saito, Timothy E. Link, Alexander Fernald, Lisa Kohne Mar 2014

Lessons Learned From An Inter-Institutional Graduate Course On Interdisciplinary Modeling For Water-Related Issues And Changing Climate, Laurel Saito, Timothy E. Link, Alexander Fernald, Lisa Kohne

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

Computer modeling is a useful tool for integrating approaches from different disciplines to address complex water and climate issues, but because academic training is typically disciplinary, many scientists and practitioners are not aware of modeling techniques in other disciplines or ways that different models can be integrated to address complex questions. Since 2005, we have conducted a course on interdisciplinary modeling that provides lectures and laboratory exercises from different disciplines as well as topics related to interdisciplinary modeling such as issues of scale and uncertainty. Students work in interdisciplinary teams to integrate modeling approaches from different disciplines to address issues …

Qualitative And Visualization Methodologies For Modeling Social-Ecological Dimensions Of Regional Water Planning On The Rio Chama, Moises Gonzales, Jose A. Rivera, J. Jarrett Garcia, Sam Markwell

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

Courses in modeling often employ techniques based on mathematical or other computer-based quantitative models. In this article the authors update a range of social science qualitative and visualization methodologies presented to graduate students at an interdisciplinary modeling course on water issues related to climate change. In part the modeling course featured the coupling of natural and human system dynamics in the context of acequias, gravity flow irrigation systems in New Mexico that depend on winter snowpack for water supply in the form of spring run-off. While student teams were able to employ STELLA and other models, they were free to …

The Fourth Dimension Of Interdisciplinary Modeling, Franco Biondi Mar 2014

The Fourth Dimension Of Interdisciplinary Modeling, Franco Biondi

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

Space and time are the domains used by every model in the applied environmental sciences, with the latter normally considered to add a fourth dimension to our simulated versions of reality. Dealing with modern challenges in water-related disciplines requires that we extend our historical perspective as far back as possible to capture underlying long-term dynamics that would otherwise be impossible to detect. At the same time, performing and interpreting retrospective studies demands an understanding of their strengths and weaknesses. Here I attempt to clarify both the importance of the past and the inevitable "paleo conundrum" associated with it by drawing …

Exploring The Potential And Performance Of Maize Production In Bangladesh, S Rahman, Ms Rahman Mar 2014

Exploring The Potential And Performance Of Maize Production In Bangladesh, S Rahman, Ms Rahman

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Maize is gaining importance in recent years as a promising crop aimed at boosting agricultural growth in Bangladesh. The present study explores the potential of maize expansion by examining its profitability and economic efficiency using a survey data of 300 farmers from three regions. Maize ranks first in terms of yield (7.98 t/ha) and return (BCR=1.63) as compared with rice and wheat. The economic efficiency of maize production is also estimated at a high 87%, although a substantial 15% [(100-87)/87)] cost reduction is still possible while maintaining current output level by eliminating technical and allocative inefficiency. Education positively contributes towards …

Privatization Of Prisons: Costs And Consequences, Alex Friedmann, Kathryn Hamoudah, Alec Karakatsanis Mar 2014

Privatization Of Prisons: Costs And Consequences, Alex Friedmann, Kathryn Hamoudah, Alec Karakatsanis

Working in the Public Interest Conferences

The privatization of prisons is generally undertaken by states to lower the cost to the public of housing prisoners. Whether cost savings actually result is debatable. Importantly, the ways in which private prisons do cut costs are problematic from the perspective of public safety, human rights, and public policy. In some well-documented cases, prisoners have escaped due to lax security and poorly trained staff. More generally, staff turnover rates are often high and the compensation packages of private prison guards may be inadequate to attract the best candidates. The U.S. Department of Justice produced a report in June of 2013 …

Delivering Public Assistance: What Does It Mean To Follow The Law?, Patrick Cates, Keith Horton, Frances Fox Piven

Working in the Public Interest Conferences

Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) is the rare public program that provides direct assistance to families in need. Georgia, like other states, receives block grants to administer TANF. What is the current state of the TANF program in Georgia and is assistance getting to those who need it? Should the state be more proactive in reaching out to those who qualify for assistance? Are there times when qualifying families are unable to access benefits due to administrative hurdles and poor customer service? What recourse do families have if they are not treated fairly by TANF administrators? This panel will …

Law Enforcement, Community, And Military Tactics: What’S The Conflict?, Stacey Cotton, Peter Kraska, James A. Pikl

Working in the Public Interest Conferences

Local law enforcement is a critical community service, and the expense of maintaining a modern and effective police force can be substantial in relation to local resources. At the same time, military equipment, SWAT teams, and aggressive search and seizure tactics have been called into question by the recurring loss of innocent life and Fourth Amendment concerns attendant to the use of overwhelming force. This panel will consider the funding mechanisms available to police and sheriff departments for equipment and capital investments, the incentives these revenues create, and the conflicts between community trust and the atmosphere of counter-insurgency which military …

Poverty In Suburbia: Are The Poor Out Of Reach?, Ellen Dunham-Jones, Dolly Jenkins-Mullen, Dwight Mullen, Benjamin Roth

Working in the Public Interest Conferences

The story of suburbs in America sweeps in much of this country’s modern history of sprawling land use and the self-segregation of affluent and middle class commuter communities. This panel will explore the current state of the suburbs and ask whether the infrastructure that supports a commuter economy is compatible with changing demographics. Who lives in the suburbs, and who speaks for them in local government? Are the children of lower income communities further disadvantaged in terms of income mobility by virtue of living in the suburbs? What problems arise when affordable housing is located in areas with poor public …

Voting Rights Act Panel, Kareem Crayton, Brian Kemp, Tomas Lopez Mar 2014

Voting Rights Act Panel, Kareem Crayton, Brian Kemp, Tomas Lopez

Working in the Public Interest Conferences

Section V of the Voting Rights Act (VRA) required covered jurisdictions to obtain “preclearance” before making changes to voting laws. In Shelby County v. Holder, the Supreme Court held that the formula determining which jurisdictions were covered by Section V was unconstitutional. Following Shelby County, states previously covered by Section V began proposing changes to election laws. If those laws are in fact discriminatory they must now be challenged under Section II of the VRA, which places the burden on plaintiffs to show racial discrimination. This panel will provide an update on proposed and enacted election law changes being made …

Drilling Down: New York, Hydraulic Fracturing, And The Dormant Commerce Clause, Meredith A. Wegener

Brigham Young University Journal of Public Law

The debate surrounding hydraulic fracturing and natural gas development from shale rock needs no embellishment. This highly sought resource and highly fought drilling technique trigger significant concerns: human health, energy independence, national security, water safety, air quality, agricultural well-being, outdoor aesthetic impairment, government involvement at all levels and by all branches, and economic development and sustainability. Whether actively participating in this conversation or not, everyone has a stake in the resolution of whether to allow this technique to be utilized and these resources to be produced.

Which Factors Explain The Rising Ethnic Heterogeneity In Italy? An Empirical Analysis At Province Level, Cristina Cattaneo Mar 2014

Which Factors Explain The Rising Ethnic Heterogeneity In Italy? An Empirical Analysis At Province Level, Cristina Cattaneo

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

The paper investigates the determinants of ethnic heterogeneity of the Italian provinces. Among other factors, the paper tests empirically whether gradual improvements in distant communication boost the generation of ethnically heterogeneous provinces. Consequently to easier communication, movers increasingly rely on an enlarged community for identity transmission, rather than on localized peer effects of the ethnic enclaves. The empirical estimation provides support to this hypothesis. Improvements in internet communications are found to increase the ethnic diversity of the Italian provinces.

Wealth And Acculturation: A Qualitative Study Of The Influence Of Wealth During Chinese International Students' Acculturation, Linshan Fu Mar 2014

Wealth And Acculturation: A Qualitative Study Of The Influence Of Wealth During Chinese International Students' Acculturation, Linshan Fu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

With the increasing number of Chinese international students coming to the United States every year, a more in-depth understanding of these international students’ acculturation is necessary and urgent. Given the fact that past researches mostly describe Chinese immigrants, migrates or international students as oppressed cultural adaptors, who cannot avoid being marginalized; who suffer from various adjusting problems; and who have to make use of acculturative strategies to adapt to the new country, this thesis takes the factor of wealth and its relation with class, status and power into account during Chinese international students’ acculturation under the globalized context. Instead of …

Pollen Drift: Reframing The Biotechnology Liability Debate, A. Bryan Endres, Lisa Schlessinger

Dickinson Law Review (1908-2003)

The advent of genetic engineering and its application to agriculture has transformed the rural landscape at a microscopic level. A cursory glance of current production fails to reveal the underlying legal tensions at work in post-modem agriculture. The seemingly natural and necessary event of drifting, sexually viable pollen, however, implicates legal rights and responsibilities at the farm level with a ripple effect felt throughout the international commodity food and feed supply chain. Despite the ubiquitous nature of agricultural biotechnology, disputes arising from simple pollen drift lack a clear legal doctrine to define the multitude of subjects implicated, including tort liability, …

To Make Florida Answer To Its Name: John Ellis, Bernard Romans And The Atlantic Science Of British West Florida, Kathleen S. Murphy Mar 2014

To Make Florida Answer To Its Name: John Ellis, Bernard Romans And The Atlantic Science Of British West Florida, Kathleen S. Murphy

History

As the royal agent for British West Florida and an avid naturalist, John Ellis, FRS, took a keen interest in both the scientific and the commercial potential of the nascent colony. This article explores how Ellis and his West Floridian correspondent Bernard Romans illuminate the social and material practices of colonial science. In particular, it builds on recent scholarship to argue that new natural knowledge about West Florida did not simply circulate in the Atlantic World, but was in fact engendered by the movement of objects and ideas through the many circuits of transatlantic natural history and imperial administration. Foregrounding …
