“Hewing Against The Grain”: John Haines’S Critique Of Robinson Jeffers Mar 2014

“Hewing Against The Grain”: John Haines’S Critique Of Robinson Jeffers

Landscapes: the Journal of the International Centre for Landscape and Language

That American poet John Haines was in some way influenced by Robinson Jeffers is difficult to dispute. Literary critics have especially noted the similarity between Haines’s and Jeffers’s biographies. And yet, while a number of distinct parallels join these poets, perhaps more interesting are the ways in which Haines’s poetics differ from Jeffers’s. In particular, Haines utilizes Jeffers’s concept of the “inhuman” for his own purpose—namely, that is, to investigate the protean border between human artifice and the natural world. Haines utilizes a unique, often elegiac, voice to do so, ultimately arriving at a decidedly generous tone.

Enhancing The Transparency Dialogue In The “Santiago Principles” For Sovereign Wealth Funds, Adam D. Dixon Mar 2014

Enhancing The Transparency Dialogue In The “Santiago Principles” For Sovereign Wealth Funds, Adam D. Dixon

Seattle University Law Review

The financial crisis ultimately caused Western governments to welcome sovereign wealth fund (SWF) investment as a way to put a floor under collapsing markets and to provide a set of voluntary principles that would underwrite SWFs’ claim to legitimacy in the international community. In the autumn of 2007, then U.S. Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson, in conjunction with the International Monetary Fund, convened the International Working Group of SWFs (IWG) to draft a set of generally accepted principles and practices. These principles are referred to as the “Santiago Principles.” The implicit objective of these twenty-four voluntary principles is to promote greater …

Culture Wars: Rate Manipulation, Institutional Corruption, And The Lost Normative Foundations Of Market Conduct Regulation, Justin O'Brien Mar 2014

Culture Wars: Rate Manipulation, Institutional Corruption, And The Lost Normative Foundations Of Market Conduct Regulation, Justin O'Brien

Seattle University Law Review

The global investigations into the manipulation of the London Interbank Offered Rate (Libor) have raised significant questions about how conflicts of interest are managed for regulated entities contributing to benchmarks. An alternative framework, which brings the management of the rate process under direct regulatory supervision, is under consideration, coordinated by the International Organization of Securities Commissions taskforce. The articulation of global principles builds on a review commissioned by the British government that suggests rates calculated by submission can be reformed. This paper argues that this approach is predestined to fail, precisely because it ignores the lessons of history. In revisiting …

P-20 Isolation And Disconnection, Lynda Lee Mar 2014

P-20 Isolation And Disconnection, Lynda Lee

Honors Scholars & Undergraduate Research Poster Symposium Programs

As one of the most recurrent subjects of visual art, the human form has been an important means of communicating human experiences and expressing the philosophical and scientific thoughts of a society. During the early 20th century, artists in Europe began distorting and abstracting the human figure in ways that were unprecedented and often times visually unsettling to emphasize its withdrawn and isolated condition while also suggesting a sense of fragility and vulnerability. Although there are various forms of isolation that can result from a number of different causes, this project explores the concept of social isolation brought about by …

The Effects Of The Property Tax Extension Limitation Law Adjustment And Hold Harmless Provision On Equity In The Illinois General State Aid Funding System, 2000-2011, Toni Marie Waggoner

Theses and Dissertations

This research analyzed the effect that the General State Aid (GSA) Property Tax Extension Limitation Law adjustment and Hold Harmless component had on equity in the Illinois General State Aid funding system. The equity criteria defined in the study was permissible variance, wealth neutrality, and conditional wealth neutrality. This study consisted of four simulations. First, baseline indices were calculated for the Illinois funding system for 2000 to 2011. Second, the Property Tax Extension Limitation Law adjustment (PTELL) was eliminated, the associated cost savings used to increase the GSA foundation level, and new equity indices were calculated. Third, the Hold Harmless …

Chinese International Students’ Perspective And Strategies In Preparing For Their Future Employability, Rong Huang, Rebecca Turner, Qian Chen

Plymouth Business School

Graduate employability and the contribution graduates make to the UK economy have been widely debated by policy-makers; however, little attention has been paid to the employability of international students. Given the growing significance of international students to the UK economy this is an interesting oversight; this article addresses this issue. Students from the Mainland China currently represent nearly 16% of the international student population; therefore, we focused on this group; firstly, to examine their perspectives on their future employability; and then, to examine how they prepared for their future careers. Given that internationalisation is a priority for many UK universities, …

The Development Of Sub-Saharan African National Consciousness Between The Two Wars 1919-1939 (A Historical Study), Hello Mohammed Ali Hamza Al-Asadi Mar 2014

The Development Of Sub-Saharan African National Consciousness Between The Two Wars 1919-1939 (A Historical Study), Hello Mohammed Ali Hamza Al-Asadi

Uruk Journal of Human Sciences

Africa remained a society lagging behind the European civilization until its first encounter in the modern era with colonialism between two societies, the first a feudal tribal society and the second a modern national society since the nineteenth century AD. African society began to be struck by violent shocks that began to awaken it from its deep slumber, and urged it to keep pace with the modern civilization, so that it was renewed indirectly and was imprinted with the characteristics of modern society. The reasons for political awareness were prepared in proportion to that renewal until its first fermentation began …

Toward A New Normal: Trauma, Diversity, And The New Orleans Urban Long-Term Research Area Exploratory (Ultra-Ex) Project, Kevin F. Gotham, Mike Blum, Richard Campanella

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

Though it is widely held that social-ecological diversity is critical for resilience and the recovery of post-trauma urban systems, there is disagreement over issues of causes and impacts. In this paper, we present analysis and findings of the impact of trauma on patterns of social-ecological diversity in New Orleans in the years following the Hurricane Katrina disaster (August-September 2005). We first provide an overview of conceptualizations of trauma and urban ecosystem resilience, and discuss programmatic research questions and objectives. We then examine city-wide land use / land cover change, showing that flood trauma reduced landscape-level ecological diversity across New Orleans. …

Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints

Previous studies identified a cluster of individuals with an autosomal recessive form of deafness that resides in a small region of mid-Michigan. We hypothesized that affected members from this community descend from a defined founder population. Using public records and personal interviews, we constructed a genealogical database that includes the affected individuals and their extended families as descendants of 461 settlers who emigrated from the Eifel region of Germany between 1836 and 1875. The genealogical database represents a 13-generation pedigree that includes 27,747 descendants of these settlers. Among these descendants, 13,784 are presumed living. Many of the extant descendants reside …
