Regulating Sex Work: Assimilation, Erotic Exceptionalism & Beyond, Adrienne D. Davis Mar 2014

Regulating Sex Work: Assimilation, Erotic Exceptionalism & Beyond, Adrienne D. Davis

Women, Gender & Sexuality Studies Faculty Research

Most commentators on sex markets focus on the debate between abolitionists and those who defend and support professional sex work. This paper, instead, looks at debates within the pro-sex work camp, uncovering some unattended tensions and contradictions. It shows that, within this camp, some stress the labor aspect, urging that sex markets perpetuate a "vulnerable population" of workers, similar to others who perform highly risky and/or exploited labor, and should be regulated accordingly. In this view, sex work would be assimilated into other labor. Others, though, take a more anti-regulatory stance. They exceptionalize this form of labor, arguing that because …

Resource Security: Competition For Global Resources, Strategic Intent, And Governments As Owners, A. Erin Bass, Subrata Chakrabarty Mar 2014

Resource Security: Competition For Global Resources, Strategic Intent, And Governments As Owners, A. Erin Bass, Subrata Chakrabarty

Management Faculty Publications

We develop a resource security theory by examining the intent of acquisitions of scarce resources by multinational firms. Results suggest that owners of firms can shape the intent of resource acquisitions. Specifically, state-owned enterprises (SOEs) tend to acquire and pay more for resources for exploration rather than exploitation. This is because SOEs’ owners – governments – are most concerned with securing their country’s future. We contribute to the literature by suggesting that ownership influences resource acquisitions, that resource security is of importance to multinational enterprises, and that SOEs invest abroad to safeguard both their own and their home countries’ future.

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

From 1989 through 1998, a total of 358 grasshopper mice were collected and examined for helminth and protistan parasites from several habitat types on the Sevilleta Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) site in New Mexico, U.S.A. Of these, 205 individuals were identified as Onychomys leucogaster (Wied-Neuwied 1841) and 153 individuals were classified as O. arenicola Mearns 1896. Many individuals of Onychomys were infected with a new species of Hymenolepididae (Hymenolepis robertrauschi), which is herein described, illustrated, and compared with all species of Nearctic Hymenolepis s. str. Hymenolepis robertrauschi was found in 26% of the individuals of O. arenicola …

Between Trade, Religion And Ethnicity: The Catholic Church's Ethnic Institutions In The Spanish Empire, 16th-19th Centuries, Oscar Alvarez Gila, Alberto Angulo Morales

BOGA: Basque Studies Consortium Journal

Throughout the Spanish Empire of the 16th-19th centuries, immigrants from the same regional, cultural or national origin tended to create associations of their own in most of the cities and ports in which these immigrant groups had formed colonies. One of the distinctive features of these institutions is that almost all of them were linked to the Catholic Church, usually in the form of religious confraternities or brotherhoods under the name or protection of a particular saint or devotion linked to their places of origin. Before the creation of the modern day meaning of nation and ethnicity, these immigrant communities …

Production Of Heritage: The Basque Block In Boise, Idaho, Gretchen Hill

BOGA: Basque Studies Consortium Journal

This article examines the social and economic underpinnings of creating a place for descendants of Basque immigrants by the use of the Basque Block in downtown Boise, Idaho. In the past, unlike other immigrant groups in the United States, Basques lacked the desire to assimilate into the U.S. and remained relatively invisible. Simultaneously, they created subtle ethnic communities and maintained transnational sociospatial ties with Basque Provinces in Europe. Today, these transnational ties are stronger, which has profoundly influenced the creation of the Basque Block. The Basques strive to maintain their heritage landscapes to retain their cultural identity and educate present …

Concentrations And Sources Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons In Surface Coastal Sediments Of The Northern Gulf Of Mexico, Zucheng Wang, Zhanfei Liu, Kehui Xu, Lawrence M. Mayer, Zulin Zhang, Alexander S. Kolker, Wei Wu

Faculty Publications

Background: Coastal sediments in the northern Gulf of Mexico have a high potential of being contaminated by petroleum hydrocarbons, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), due to extensive petroleum exploration and transportation activities. In this study we evaluated the spatial distribution and contamination sources of PAHs, as well as the bioavailable fraction in the bulk PAH pool, in surface marsh and shelf sediments (top 5 cm) of the northern Gulf of Mexico. Results: PAH concentrations in this region ranged from 100 to 856 ng g(-1), with the highest concentrations in Mississippi River mouth sediments followed by marsh sediments and then …

Unexpectedly Low Rangewide Population Genetic Structure Of The Imperiled Eastern Box Turtle Terrapene C. Carolina., Steven J.A. Kimble, O.E. Rhodes Jr., Rod N. Williams Mar 2014

Unexpectedly Low Rangewide Population Genetic Structure Of The Imperiled Eastern Box Turtle Terrapene C. Carolina., Steven J.A. Kimble, O.E. Rhodes Jr., Rod N. Williams

Department of Forestry & Natural Resources Faculty Publications

Rangewide studies of genetic parameters can elucidate patterns and processes that operate only over large geographic scales. Herein, we present a rangewide population genetic assessment of the eastern box turtle Terrapene c. carolina, a species that is in steep decline across its range. To inform conservation planning for this species, we address the hypothesis that disruptions to demographic and movement parameters associated with the decline of the eastern box turtle has resulted in distinctive genetic signatures in the form of low genetic diversity, high population structuring, and decreased gene flow. We used microsatellite genotype data from (n = 799) …

Communication Behavior Study Of Support In The Arts Using The Situational Theory Of Publics And The Theory Of Reasoned Action, Ashleigh Gallant Mar 2014

Communication Behavior Study Of Support In The Arts Using The Situational Theory Of Publics And The Theory Of Reasoned Action, Ashleigh Gallant

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The Arts in the United States has been a thoroughly studied topic, largely trying to substantiate its value to society, resulting in a plethora of research that positively correlates the arts and a more healthy and successful society. Findings from various studies over the years have shown declines in arts support in the form of funding, advocacy, education, and participation (National Endowment for the Arts, 2009). Additional studies have suggested that millennials are redefining what participation means in the arts, and even the definition of the arts. The primary research question of this study is why are support for the …

Using Nocturnal Flight Calls To Assess The Fall Migration Of Warblers And Sparrows Along A Coastal Ecological Barrier, Adam D. Smith, Peter W. C. Paton, Scott R. Mcwilliams Mar 2014

Using Nocturnal Flight Calls To Assess The Fall Migration Of Warblers And Sparrows Along A Coastal Ecological Barrier, Adam D. Smith, Peter W. C. Paton, Scott R. Mcwilliams

Natural Resources Science Faculty Publications

Atmospheric conditions fundamentally influence the timing, intensity, energetics, and geography of avian migration. While radar is typically used to infer the influence of weather on the magnitude and spatiotemporal patterns of nocturnal bird migration, monitoring the flight calls produced by many bird species during nocturnal migration represents an alternative methodology and provides information regarding the species composition of nocturnal migration. We used nocturnal flight call (NFC) recordings of at least 22 migratory songbirds (14 warbler and 8 sparrow species) during fall migration from eight sites along the mainland and island coasts of Rhode Island to evaluate five hypotheses regarding NFC …

Earth Sciences

Forest inventory studies in the Amazon indicate a large terrestrial carbon sink. However, field plots may fail to represent forest mortality processes at landscape-scales of tropical forests. Here we characterize the frequency distribution of disturbance events in natural forests from 0.01 ha to 2,651 ha size throughout Amazonia using a novel combination of forest inventory, airborne lidar and satellite remote sensing data. We find that small-scale mortality events are responsible for aboveground biomass losses of B1.28 Pg C y 1 over the entire Amazon region. We also find that intermediate-scale disturbances account for losses of B0.01 Pg C y 1 …

Honors Program Theses and Research Projects

Using multiple time series based on data gathered from reliable government agencies I will compare the effects of national inflation, fluctuations in national GDP, and fluctuations in national employment on the personal income of multiple Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSA), with the effects that local (MSA) inflation, fluctuations in local GDP, and fluctuations in local employment in multiple MSAs have on real national GDP. This analysis will be limited to four metropolitan areas, San Antonio, Texas, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, San Diego, California, and Cincinnati-Hamilton, Ohio. These metropolitan areas are each in a different region located within the United States. This was done …

Dna Sequences Of Troglobitic Nicoletiid Insects Support Sierra De El Abra And The Sierra De Guatemala As A Single Biogeographical Area: Implications For Astyanax, Luis Espinasa, Nicole D. Bartolo, Catherine E. Newkirk Mar 2014

Dna Sequences Of Troglobitic Nicoletiid Insects Support Sierra De El Abra And The Sierra De Guatemala As A Single Biogeographical Area: Implications For Astyanax, Luis Espinasa, Nicole D. Bartolo, Catherine E. Newkirk

KIP Articles

The blind Mexican tetra fish, Astyanax mexicanus, has become the most influential model for research of cave adapted organisms. Many authors assume that the Sierra de Guatemala populations and the Sierra de El Abra populations are derived from two independent colonizations. This assumption arises in part from biogeography. The 100 m high, 100 m wide Servilleta Canyon of the Boquillas River separates both mountain ranges and is an apparent barrier for troglobite dispersion. Anelpistina quinterensis (Nicoletiidae, Zygentoma, Insecta) is one of the most troglomorphic nicoletiid silverfish insects ever described. 16S rRNA sequences support that this species migrated underground to reach …

Energy Productivity And Efficiency Of Wheat Farming In Bangladesh, S Rahman, Mk Hasan Mar 2014

Energy Productivity And Efficiency Of Wheat Farming In Bangladesh, S Rahman, Mk Hasan

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Wheat is the second most important cereal crop in Bangladesh and production is highly sensitive to variations in the environment. We estimate productivity and energy efficiency of wheat farming in Bangladesh by applying a stochastic production frontier approach while accounting for the environmental constraints affecting production. Wheat farming is energy efficient with a net energy balance of 20,596MJ per ha and energy ratio of 2.34. Environmental constraints such as a combination of unsuitable land, weed and pest attack, bad weather, planting delay and infertile soils significantly reduce wheat production and its energy efficiency. Environmental constraints account for a mean energy …

Agriculture, Environmental Restoration And Ecosystem Services: Assessing The Costs Of Water Storage On Agricultural Lands In South Florida, Kayla Ouellette Mar 2014

Agriculture, Environmental Restoration And Ecosystem Services: Assessing The Costs Of Water Storage On Agricultural Lands In South Florida, Kayla Ouellette

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

A large part of the environmental restoration required by the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan calls for more water-storage on lands south of Lake Okeechobee in order to restore the natural water flows of the Everglades watershed. The Everglades Agricultural Area (EAA) can be used for increased water storage in order to relieve coastal estuaries of excess water in the rainy season. This water storage can deliver additional ecosystem services of soil retention and reduced CO2 emissions that could compensate farmers for the cost of water storage by increasing long term farm profitability. The goals of this study were 1) to …
