The nation's coasts and oceans contribute much to the United States economy. For the past 14 years, the National Ocean Economics Program (NOEP), now a program of the Center for the Blue Economy at the Monterey Institute of International Studies, has compiled time-series data that track economic activities, demographics, ports and cargo volume and value, natural resource production and value, non-market values, and federal expenditures in the U.S. coastal zone both on land and in the water. A report on the ocean and coastal economies of the United States was released by NOEP in 2009 covering data through 2005. The …

Notation And Memorandum: Special Artists And Their Portrayal Of The American Civil War, Bryan G. Caswell
Notation And Memorandum: Special Artists And Their Portrayal Of The American Civil War, Bryan G. Caswell
The Gettysburg Compiler: On the Front Lines of History
As the first war to see the extensive use of photography, the American Civil War was brought home to civilians in hundreds of photographs portraying camp life or the aftermath of battles. Due to the nature of nineteenth century photography as well as safety concerns, however, photographers were not able to capture scenes of actual combat for their viewers. This task fell instead to men known as Special Artists or “Specials,” hired by the illustrated periodicals of the day to travel with the armies and sketch all manner of events associated with the military, including battles as they progressed. [ …

An Analysis Of The Archaeological Work Of The Provo River Delta, Utah, Adrien Carole Mooney
An Analysis Of The Archaeological Work Of The Provo River Delta, Utah, Adrien Carole Mooney
Theses and Dissertations
Throughout the 20th century, a significant amount of work was conducted at archaeological sites in Utah Valley dating to the Archaic, Fremont, and Late Prehistoric periods. Despite the amount of work conducted, very little has actually been reported in the past. As a result, very little has previously been known about either the prehistoric archaeology of the Provo River Delta area or the historic archaeological work that has taken place. This thesis presents a synthesis of historical work, a reanalysis of artifacts from previous excavations, and a review of extant documentation (including field notes, maps, and student reports) of several …

Testing The Feasibility Of Bioacoustic Localization In Urban Environments, Blaire O'Neal
Testing The Feasibility Of Bioacoustic Localization In Urban Environments, Blaire O'Neal
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Bioacoustics is a relatively new field of research focused on studying the acoustic signals of vocal animal species. The field has been a topic of interest for many years due its passive approach and avoidance of species-level limitations, such as tracking rare or nocturnal species. It has been used to locate birds in terrestrial environments; however, localization in urban environments remains unstudied. This research aims to fill the gap by attempting to estimate the location of 30 discrete calls in eight unique, urban environments. Sites represented two distinct traffic scenarios: moderate traffic and high traffic. Three system arrays of three …
Still Waters Run Deep: Landscaping Practices, Community Perceptions, And Social Indicators For Stormwater Nonpoint Source Pollution Management In Manatee County, Florida, Ann Rebecca Persaud
Still Waters Run Deep: Landscaping Practices, Community Perceptions, And Social Indicators For Stormwater Nonpoint Source Pollution Management In Manatee County, Florida, Ann Rebecca Persaud
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Stormwater nonpoint source pollution (NPSP) is a result of diffuse sources of pollutants transported by rainfall and surface runoff into stormwater ponds and drainage systems before percolating into the ground. In particular, the nutrients found in fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides applied in excess by homeowners and landscapers can cause a range of issues in stormwater ponds from fish kills to eutrophication. As a result, Manatee County, Florida has issued a fertilizer ordinance with best management practices (BMPs) and a fertilizer black out period to reduce NPSP. This study is aimed at capturing the perceptions of residents which affect stormwater NPSP …
On Man, On Nature, And On Human Life: William Knight's Life Of William Wordsworth And The Invention Of "Home At Grasmere", Patria Isabel Wright
On Man, On Nature, And On Human Life: William Knight's Life Of William Wordsworth And The Invention Of "Home At Grasmere", Patria Isabel Wright
Theses and Dissertations
Victorian scholar William Knight remains one of the most prolific Wordsworth scholars of the nineteenth century. His many publications helped establish Wordsworth's positive Victorian reputation that twentieth and twenty-first century scholars inherited. My particular focus is how Knight's 1889 inclusion of "Home at Grasmere" in his Life of William Wordsworth, rather than in his chronological sequencing of the poems, establishes a way to read the poem as a biographical artifact for his late-Victorian audience. Knight's detailed account of the poet's life, often told through letters and journal accounts, provides more contexts-including Dorothy's journal entries and correspondence of the early 1800s-to …

A Global Investigation Of Stakeholder And Contextual Influences On Firm Engagement In Sustainability, Annette M. Nemetz
A Global Investigation Of Stakeholder And Contextual Influences On Firm Engagement In Sustainability, Annette M. Nemetz
Dissertations and Theses
Global sustainability issues cross all sectors of society, including businesses, governments, and communities and come with substantial costs. Business organizations are increasingly expected to address sustainability issues in a responsible manner and to disclose socially responsible behaviors accurately and transparently, showing that they are effective at managing and being proactive about sustainability challenges. In light of these pressures and expectations for business organizations, the fundamental research question for this study was whether variation existed in the levels of engagement in sustainability efforts across firms globally, and, more importantly, why such variation existed.
The level of strategic firm engagement in sustainability …

Seismic Anisotropy Of The Archean Crust In The Minnesota River Valley, Superior Province, Ec Ferré, A Gébelin, Ja Conder, Et Al
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
The Minnesota River Valley (MRV) subprovince is a well-exposed example of late Archean lithosphere. Its high-grade gneisses display a subhorizontal layering, most likely extending down to the crust-mantle boundary. The strong linear fabric of the gneisses results from high-temperature plastic flow during collage-related contraction. Seismic anisotropies measured up to 1 GPa in the laboratory, and seismic anisotropies calculated through forward-modeling indicate ΔVP ~5–6% and ΔVS ~3%. The MRV crust exhibits a strong macroscopic layering and foliation, and relatively strong seismic anisotropies at the hand specimen scale. Yet the horizontal attitude of these structures precludes any substantial contribution of the MRV …

Counselors In Rural Schools: A Position Of Leadership, Cynthia L. Wimberly, Stephanie Brickman
Counselors In Rural Schools: A Position Of Leadership, Cynthia L. Wimberly, Stephanie Brickman
The Rural Educator
Approximately one-third of the K-12 student population attends school in areas identified as rural/small town. Rural schools offer counselors unique opportunities to lead by guiding students’ education in directions that best fit their career aspirations, thus impacting the region educationally, economically and socially. The purpose of this paper is to identify the leadership role of school counselors in rural communities as identified by the American School Counselors Association (ASCA). Numerous challenges and opportunities inherent rural settings have been identified and suggestions offered as to ways in which counselors can effectively undertake leadership roles.
Assessing Attachment Process Among Early Institutionalized Orphans In Burkina Faso, Africa, Clarisse Barbier
Assessing Attachment Process Among Early Institutionalized Orphans In Burkina Faso, Africa, Clarisse Barbier
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Abstract
The focus of this thesis is early attachment among institutionalized infant orphans. Previous research has pointed towards attachment problems in dysfunctional institutions, but did not take a comparative approach to understanding attachment. The present research was conducted in an orphanage in Kaya, a little town located in the Center North Region of Burkina Faso, Africa. The 22 children at the institution were aged four months to five years and were mostly from the Mossi ethnicity. Using mixed psychological and anthropological methods such as behaviors checklist, attachment questionnaires, and participant observation, this research indicates that orphans do not display evident …

Removing Parallax-Induced False Changes In Change Detection, Karmon M. Vongsy
Removing Parallax-Induced False Changes In Change Detection, Karmon M. Vongsy
Theses and Dissertations
Accurate change detection (CD) results in urban environments is of interest to a diverse set of applications including military surveillance, environmental monitoring, and urban development. This work presents a hyperspectral CD (HSCD) framework. The framework uncovers the need for HSCD methods that resolve false change caused by image parallax. A Generalized Likelihood Ratio Test (GLRT) statistic for HSCD is developed that accommodates unknown mis-registration between imagery described by a prior probability density function for the spatial mis-registration. The potential of the derived method to incorporate more complex signal proccessing functions is demonstrated by the incorporation of a parallax error mitigation …
Empirical Analysis Of Human Capital, Learning Culture, And Knowledge Management As Antecedents To Organizational Performance: Theoretical And Practical Implications For Logistics Readiness Officer Force Development, Matt J. Cherry

Optimizing The Disposition And Retrograde Of United States Air Force Class Vii Equipment From Afghanistan, Arthur R. Litchfield Iii
Theses and Dissertations
To meet the President's established OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM drawdown date of 1 December 2014, the United States Air Force, while continuing to conduct and support combat operations, must begin to plan disposition and execute retrograde its Class VII equipment. Calling upon concepts utilized in the management of closed-loop supply chains and optimization, this research proposes a multiple objective linear program to optimize the alignment of Bagram and Kandahar Air Base positioned equipment with in-garrison demand. Closed-loop supply chains provide planning process guidelines necessary for second use value creation and efficient reverse logistical flows. Optimization concepts provide the methodology for model …
The Military Inventory Routing Problem With Direct Delivery, Ian M. Mccormack
The Military Inventory Routing Problem With Direct Delivery, Ian M. Mccormack
Theses and Dissertations
The inventory routing problem coordinates inventory management and transportation policies when implementing vendor managed inventory replenishment, the business practice were a vendor monitors the inventory of its customers and determines a strategy to replenish each customer. The United States Army uses vendor managed inventory replenishment during combat situations to manage resupply. The military variant of the stochastic inventory routing problem considers delivery failure due to hostile actions. We formulate a Markov decision process model for the military inventory routing problem, with the objective to determine an optimal unmanned tactical airlift policy for resupplying brigade combat team elements in a combat …
Data Fusion For Decision Support, Rebecca A. Unruh
Data Fusion For Decision Support, Rebecca A. Unruh
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis demonstrates the utility of fusing data from multiple sources, including remote sensing data, in a Geographic Information System (GIS) for decision support by designing a new method of assessing wildfire risk in the wilderness urban interface (WUI) to facilitate better informed land management decisions and reduce mission impacts of wildfires on the military. Information from remote sensing systems has been used for decades to support decisions. Today, data are time and location tagged, making it possible to correlate and fuse disparate sources in a GIS, from which data can be stored, analyzed, and the resulting information shared. The …
