Highest Court In New York Affirms Local Power To Regulate Hydrofracking, John R. Nolon, Jessica A. Bacher Sep 2014

Highest Court In New York Affirms Local Power To Regulate Hydrofracking, John R. Nolon, Jessica A. Bacher

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

In one of the most anxiously awaited New York land use decisions in recent memory, the State’s highest court held that local governments have the power to regulate hydrofracking under their authority to enact zoning ordinances. Both the Towns of Dryden and Middlefield enacted zoning laws that entirely banned gas drilling and associated activities within their borders. The plaintiffs, a private gas company in one case and a private property owner in the other, claimed that a supersession clause in the State Oil, Gas, and Solution Mining Law (OGSML) preempted local authority. After reviewing the plain language of the OGSML, …

Degradation Of Protective Glove Materials Exposed To Commercial Products: A Comparative Study Of Tensile Strength And Gravimetric Analyses, Todd B. Pelham Sep 2014

Degradation Of Protective Glove Materials Exposed To Commercial Products: A Comparative Study Of Tensile Strength And Gravimetric Analyses, Todd B. Pelham

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

ABSTRACT

Current glove guides attempt to assist in recommending which type of glove is appropriate for handling chemicals; however, they include information on less than 1% of the 89 million chemical products available today.

This study offers a solution by testing five durable polymer materials against 50 chemicals, using two rapid chemical degradation assessment techniques. The first technique involves gravimetric analysis of the weight change following constant immersion against the chemical mixture. The second method uses tensile strength to assess molecular changes in the polymer structure.

This study is focused on addressing three issues of concern. First, this study examines …

Positive And Negative Spillover Of Pro-Environmental Behavior: An Integrative Review And Theoretical Framework, Heather B. Truelove, Amanda R. Carrico, Elke U. Weber, Kaitlin Toner Raimi, Michael P. Vandenbergh Sep 2014

Positive And Negative Spillover Of Pro-Environmental Behavior: An Integrative Review And Theoretical Framework, Heather B. Truelove, Amanda R. Carrico, Elke U. Weber, Kaitlin Toner Raimi, Michael P. Vandenbergh

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

A recent surge of research has investigated the potential of pro-environmental behavior interventions to affect other pro-environmental behaviors not initially targeted by the intervention. The evidence evaluating these spillover effects has been mixed, with some studies finding evidence for positive spillover (i.e., one pro-environmental behavior increases the likelihood of performing additional pro-environmental behaviors) and others finding negative spillover (i.e., one pro-environmental behavior decreases the likelihood of additional pro-environmental behaviors). Different academic disciplines have investigated this question, employing different methodologies and arriving at divergent findings. This paper provides a unifying theoretical framework and uses the framework to review the existing research …

Production Of Natural Dyed Palm Yarns And Fabrics, Chanphen Chumsang, Pitak Upan Sep 2014

Production Of Natural Dyed Palm Yarns And Fabrics, Chanphen Chumsang, Pitak Upan

Applied Environmental Research

Palm fibreis a waste product from the fruit crushing-extracting process in local communities. This study examined the characteristics of natural dyed palm yarns and fabrics producedfrom treated palm fibres. The results showed that fibre characteristics were improved by anaerobic fermentation, and following crushing and carding, were 3-5 times smaller, softer and more pliable. In the production of palm/cotton yarns of No. 7 (50/50), No.10(40/60), No.16(30/70)andNo.10(0/100),the 3-5 denier palm yarns and cotton yarns were spun in open-end spinning units. Regarding the physical properties, the blended yarns showed more unevenness and higher tensile strength and elongation at break than 100% cotton yarn. However, …

Dinoflagellate Bloom Produced By Protoperidinium Divergens Response To Ecological Parameters And Anthropogenic Influences In The Junglighat Bay Of South Andaman Islands, Karthik Raji, Gadi Padmavati

Applied Environmental Research

The bloom-forming dinoflagellate, Protoperidinium divergenshas been linked with coastaleutrophication in tropical and subtropical regions. Moderate to intense harmful algal bloom of dinoflagellates Protoperidinium divergens (33,500 cells. mL-1) was observed during June 2012in Junglighat Bay of Port Blair in South Andaman. Bloom of Protoperidinium divergenswas observed for four days and declined afterwards due to heavy rainfall with low seawater temperature of 24 to 26°C. A total of 63 species and 33 genera were identified. In the present investigation, the following species of phytoplankton and zooplankton were found to be common; phytoplanktonsuch as Amphorasp., Bacteriastrumsp., Chaetocerossp., Coscinodiscussp., Rhizosoleniasp., Gonyaulaxsp., Protoperidinium sp., Pyrophacussp.and …

The Environment Education Model For Sustainable Mangrove Forest Management In The Eastern Part Of Thailand, Niwat Sarakhan

Applied Environmental Research

The objectives of this study were to identifyfactorsandenvironmental education models affecting community participation in sustainable mangrove forest managementas well as to develop and evaluate participationin an environmental education model for sustainable mangrove forest management in the eastern part of Thailand. This study employed mixed methods and was divided into 3 steps. First, a quantitative method was used to identify facts and factors affecting local participation in solving mangrove deforestation problems. A multiple-step sampling method was used to selectsamples of households in the province of Chanthaburi. The second step employed a qualitative method using an environmental education model design. The aim …

The Potential Of Social Capital In The Implementation Of Payment For Environmental Services In Tawang Retention Pond, Edi Santosa Sep 2014

The Potential Of Social Capital In The Implementation Of Payment For Environmental Services In Tawang Retention Pond, Edi Santosa

Applied Environmental Research

A high level of space and land utilization in the city of Semarang, Indonesia, has caused degradation of natural resources, both terrestrial and aquatic. In particular, the impact of flooding and high spring tides has worsened over time. Payment for Environmental Services (PES) is now being developed globally as a market-based instrument to attribute value to ecosystem, environmental and social services provided by natural resources, recognizing the value of social capital. Local networks and communities play important roles and have positive impacts on economic welfare and local development. The aim of this study is to analyse the potential of social …
