Estimating Migration Rates Between Populations Of Zostera Marina In The San Francisco Bay, Elizabeth S. Gutierrez
Estimating Migration Rates Between Populations Of Zostera Marina In The San Francisco Bay, Elizabeth S. Gutierrez
STAR Program Research Presentations
Eelgrass (Zostera marina) is a highly clonal marine angiosperm that can also reproduce sexually through flowering and seed formation. In a previous study, Fst values from six microsatellite loci suggested that a perennial San Francisco Bay subpopulation at Point Molate (Richmond, California) was able to recover from a drastic 2006 die-off through seed recruitment from neighboring eelgrass subpopulations, changing its reproductive strategy from clonal to sexual. Although Fst measures continue to be widely used in population genetics, the assumptions under which they operate are not always appropriate given certain circumstances, such small population sizes and/or asymmetrical migration rates. Our summer …

Ecological Agriculture. Integrating Low Input, High Productive Farming With Wildlife Conservation. Results From The Experimental Farm La Combe, Drome France, Marthe Kiley-Worthington
Ecological Agriculture. Integrating Low Input, High Productive Farming With Wildlife Conservation. Results From The Experimental Farm La Combe, Drome France, Marthe Kiley-Worthington
Ecological Impacts of Animal Agriculture Collection
Wildlife conservation must be integrated with energy and resource efficient agriculture for the human population to survive. Modern high input energy and resource inefficient agriculture does not address these problems. An efficient food producing system which marries wildlife conservation with resource and energy efficient human food production is needed. This is Ecological Agriculture, modelled on how natural ecosystems work. It is defined as: The establishment and maintenance of a diversified, self-sustaining low input farming system managed to maximize net production without causing large or long term changes to the environment. It must be economically viable, and ethically and aesthetically acceptable …

Geochemical Pollution Assessment Of Sediment Metal From Lower Region Of The Ogun River, Nigeria, Anslem Diayi, Michael Gbadebo
Geochemical Pollution Assessment Of Sediment Metal From Lower Region Of The Ogun River, Nigeria, Anslem Diayi, Michael Gbadebo
Applied Environmental Research
From depths of 0-5 cm, 5-10 cm and 10-15 cm, sediment samples were collected from three locations in the lower region of the Ogun River Basin, namely Mokoloki, Oke-Oko and Kara. The samples were obtained using Van Veen sediment grab after which they were stored in well labeled polythene bags for onward transportation to the laboratory. For pH and conductivity, samples were determined in-situ using standard methods by the American Public Health Association of 1992 while Organic Carbon was determined by the Wakley Method. The sediments were then air dried before analysis for particle size and metal concentration. Induced Couple …

A Simplified Rainfall-Streamflow Network Model On Multivariate Regression Analysis For Water Level Forecasting In Klong Luang (Kgt.19 Station) Sub-Watershed, Chon Buri Province, Thailand, Charoen Panant, Samakkee Boonyawat
Applied Environmental Research
A simplifiedrainfall-streamflownetwork model based on multivariate linear regression (MLR) analysishas been proposed. To determine significant coefficients of streamflow network, eleven MLR models were examined. The study's three objectives were 1) to develop a novel a mathematical model based on MLR analysis for forecasting optimal water levels;2) to determine the most significant coefficient of rainfall-streamflow network among in the area of interest in the vicinity of Klong Luang sub-watershedKGT.19 station; and3) to apply the optimal MLR model forwater level andflood forecasting mapsin Klong Luang Sub-watershed. We used Geographic Information System (GIS) and Remotely Sensed Data (RS) data recorded from Klong Luang …
Environmental Management Transfer And Environmental Performance By Japanese Firms In Thailand, Tatsuo Kimbara, Kazuma Murakami, Nirundon Tapachai
Environmental Management Transfer And Environmental Performance By Japanese Firms In Thailand, Tatsuo Kimbara, Kazuma Murakami, Nirundon Tapachai
Applied Environmental Research
This paper analyzes the determinants of environmental management transfer and environ-mental performance by Japanese firms in Thailand. For sustainable development, all actors need to contribute to the reduction of environmental loads. This requirement is part of a corporate social responsibility. Data obtained from a questionnaire survey onJapanese subsi-diaries in Thailandareused in the analysis. Government regulation, environmental strategy, organization and environmental performance are the key factors in the analytical framework. This paper uses ordinary least square (OLS) method for estimation. The results of the analy-sis indicate that the environmental management system and green procurement by parent firms are significantly related to …

A Threat To New Zealand's Tuatara Heats Up, Kristine L. Grayson, Nicola J. Mitchell, Nicola J. Nelson
A Threat To New Zealand's Tuatara Heats Up, Kristine L. Grayson, Nicola J. Mitchell, Nicola J. Nelson
Biology Faculty Publications
No matter how many times we head to one of New Zealand's offshore islands, the feelings are always a mix of sheer awe at the beauty and biodiversity preserved in these special refuges and lingering nerves. Did we remember all the gear? Do we have enough food and water in case we get stuck? Can the helicopter land on the side of a cliff in these winds? These epic journeys are in pursuit of a lone remnant of the reptile evolutionary tree, with a unique ecology that has big implications under climate change.
Researching Environmental Justice: A Conversation, Virginia C. Thomas, William W. Lefevre
Researching Environmental Justice: A Conversation, Virginia C. Thomas, William W. Lefevre
Library Scholarly Publications
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency defines environmental justice as “the fair treatment and meaningful involvement of all people regardless of race, color, national origin, or income with respect to the development, implementation, and enforcement of environmental laws, regulations, and policies.” The concerns that arise in this complex environmental context extend beyond the scope of traditional legal research resources to include historical, social, scientific, and governmental documents that reside in unique archival collections.
Through the conversation that follows, senior archivist William LeFevre of the Walter P. Reuther Library shares his experience and insights on how archival resources can provide essential support …
