Applying A Social-Ecological Systems Approach To Human-Bear Encounters Across The Pacific Rim: Advancing Resilient Human-Wildlife Management Strategies, Kim A. Jochum
Biological Sciences
Wildlife management is challenged with addressing human resource needs while simultaneously conserving wildlife populations. Conflicts between humans and wildlife have increased across Northern countries with the expansion of human communities and environmental changes. Lack of information exists about reasons for such occurrences. This study explores adaptive capacity and resilience in coupled human-wildlife systems through the analysis of social and ecological factors contributing to perceptions of negative and positive human-bear (Ursus spp.) encounters. I first developed a theory to evaluate human perceptions and behaviors during human-wildlife encounters. Secondly I adopted an interdisciplinary framework to analyze human-bear encounters in urbanizing regions of …

An Investigation Of Geochemical Evidence For Three Paleo-Environments, John Paul Jones
An Investigation Of Geochemical Evidence For Three Paleo-Environments, John Paul Jones
Theses and Dissertations
Three paleo-environments were studied. The first project concerned the Manson Impact and the effect of the Black Hills on the resulting fall-out from this asteroid strike. Samples of the Crow Creek Member were taken east of the Black Hills in Nebraska and South Dakota and samples from the Red Bird Member were taken from the west, in Wyoming. These samples were examined for chemical weathering, soot, shocked quartz, and fossils. The Crow Creek samples had shocked quartz (indicative of an impact), severe chemical weathering, soot, and evidence of tsunamis. There were few calcareous fossils. The Red Bird showed no signs …
Incorporating Third Party Green Building Rating Systems Into Municipal Building And Zoning Codes, Edward Teyber
Incorporating Third Party Green Building Rating Systems Into Municipal Building And Zoning Codes, Edward Teyber
Pace Environmental Law Review
The role of green buildings in mitigating climate change has thus become a hot topic. This literature has begun to elicit change within corporations pursuing third party certification of their corporate buildings and campuses. Perhaps the success of discrete green building projects in mitigating climate change compared to the failure of international regulatory bodies to reach consensus for meaningful change is due to the publicity and, in turn, profits associated with certification by a third party green building rating system. In addition to reduced GHG emissions, reduced runoff, reduced maintenance costs, and positive publicity of green buildings for the project …
Phenotypic Robustness And The Assortativity Signature Of Human Transcription Factor Networks, Dov A. Pechenick, Joshua L. Payne, Jason H. Moore
Phenotypic Robustness And The Assortativity Signature Of Human Transcription Factor Networks, Dov A. Pechenick, Joshua L. Payne, Jason H. Moore
Dartmouth Scholarship
Many developmental, physiological, and behavioral processes depend on the precise expression of genes in space and time. Such spatiotemporal gene expression phenotypes arise from the binding of sequence-specific transcription factors (TFs) to DNA, and from the regulation of nearby genes that such binding causes. These nearby genes may themselves encode TFs, giving rise to a transcription factor network (TFN), wherein nodes represent TFs and directed edges denote regulatory interactions between TFs. Computational studies have linked several topological properties of TFNs - such as their degree distribution - with the robustness of a TFN's gene expression phenotype to genetic and environmental …

Publications and Research
The Neotropical butterfly Dryas iulia has been collected from several locations in Thailand and Malaysia since 2007, and has been observed breeding in the wild, using introduced Passiflora foetida as a larval host plant. The butterfly is bred by a butterfly house in Phuket, Thailand, for release at weddings and Buddhist ceremonies, and we hypothesized that this butterfly house was the source of wild, Thai individuals. We compared wing patterns and COI barcodes from two, wild Thai populations with individuals obtained from this butterfly house. All Thai individuals resemble the subspecies D. iulia modesta, and barcodes from wild and captive …
Consumer Preferences With Regard To Local And Sustainable Seafood, Dylan Cowley, Jesse R. Coulon
Consumer Preferences With Regard To Local And Sustainable Seafood, Dylan Cowley, Jesse R. Coulon
Journal of Environmental and Resource Economics at Colby
Seafood is an increasingly important source of sustenance as it provides an energy efficient, low environmental impact source of protein. New innovations and techniques have improved fishing efficiency and scale, making seafood relatively inexpensive to catch. However, this increase in volume has consequently generated a growing global concern about the environmental impacts of seafood production and harvesting. The resulting increase in seafood demand was matched by an inverse decrease in fish stock. For example, tuna has decreased in global population by 80% since 1970, and is decimated by severe overfishing.
In order to educate consumers about the environmental effects of …
Leap: Land Endowment Action Plan For Sustainable Colby, Victoria Palffy
Leap: Land Endowment Action Plan For Sustainable Colby, Victoria Palffy
Journal of Environmental and Resource Economics at Colby
This paper proposes that Colby College purchase land endowments to fuel its recently constructed campus biomass plant. Rather than contract with a third party, the college should invest in 30,000 acres2 and sustainably harvest its own renewable fuel. Beyond this, LEAP, the land endowment action plan, presents an opportunity to improve forest health, conserve valuable ecosystems, implement major additions to the curriculum, gain fuel independence, and create a constant annual revenue stream. With a 40-year payback period, the long-term investment brings profits of over $260 million in its 100-year outlook.

Jellyfish Throwdown: Invasive Versus Native, Brooke Bemowski, Trisha Huynh, Lindsay J. Sullivan, Wim Kimmerer
STAR Program Research Presentations
The San Francisco Bay Estuary is home to many species of marine and wildlife that create a delicate ecological balance. Invasive jellyfish introduced to the bay though cargo shipping are believed to be competing with the endangered delta smelt for the same food source of copepods. Samples of zooplankton were taken from high and low salinity zones in the San Francisco Bay over three years in months June through February to correlate with the peak of the jellyfish lifecycle. The preserved samples are looked through and jellyfish are removed and recorded. The species of jellyfish is determined using features such …

Salinity And Temperature Distribution Of Jellyfish In The San Francisco Estuary, Trisha Huynh, Brooke Bemowski, Lindsay Sullivan, Wim Kimmerer
STAR Program Research Presentations
Jellyfish are generally characterized by their jelly-like bodies and internal lining (two tissue layers). They found both in the phylum Ctenophora and the phylum Cnidaria. Ctenophores differ from cnidarians primarily due to the rows of “combs”, or cilia, which are used for transportation. Additionally, ctenophores possess sticky cells while cindarians possess stinging cells. Jellyfish depend on zooplankton (small floating aquatic animals) as a food source; as a result, they are potential competitors and predators to plankton-eating fish and may negatively impact fish populations.
As recently as 1950, jellyfish have entered the San Francisco Bay from the Mediterranean Sea (probably …

Modelling And Validation Of The Santa Catarina Island Bays Hydrodynamics Based On Astronomic Tides And Measured Tides, Luis Hamilton Pospissil Garbossa, Argeu Vanz, Luis Daniel Fachada Fernandes, Robson Ventura De Souza, Luiz Fernando Vianna, Guilherme Sabino Rupp
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Santa Catarina Island bays (SCI bays) has a great economic and social importance in the region. With more than 700.000 habitants in its surroundings, besides touristic and fishery activities, it represents approximately 70% of the Brazilian bivalve shellfish production. In order to understand processes controlling the water quality and food availability, relevant for the shellfish production, it is unquestionably important to understand the main hydrodynamics patterns of SCI Bay. Thus, a hydrodynamic assessment study of the SCI bays was carried out using the numerical model MOHID. The model was implemented using bathymetric information obtained from Brazilian nautical charts, two tide …

Light Pollution Research Through Citizen Science, John Kanemoto
Light Pollution Research Through Citizen Science, John Kanemoto
STAR Program Research Presentations
Light pollution (LP) can disrupt and/or degrade the health of all living things, as well as, their environments. The goal of my research at the NOAO was to check the accuracy of the citizen science LP reporting systems entitled: Globe at Night (GaN), Dark Sky Meter (DSM), and Loss of the Night (LoN). On the GaN webpage, the darkness of the night sky (DotNS) is reported by selecting a magnitude chart. Each magnitude chart has a different density/number of stars around a specific constellation. The greater number of stars implies a darker night sky. Within the DSM iPhone application, a …
Salinity Distribution Of Microplankton In The San Francisco Estuary, Carrie Ann Sharitt, Lindsay Sullivan, Wim Kimmerer
Salinity Distribution Of Microplankton In The San Francisco Estuary, Carrie Ann Sharitt, Lindsay Sullivan, Wim Kimmerer
STAR Program Research Presentations
Microplankton are a diverse group of planktonic organisms ranging from 0.02 to 0.2 millimeters. Since the group is defined solely by size, it spans numerous taxonomic groups, including both heterotrophs and autotrophs. Microplankton are abundant in all aquatic ecosystems and are important prey for many organisms, including bivalves, crustaceans, and fish. The San Francisco Bay is truly an estuary as saltwater enters the estuary under the Golden Gate Bridge and freshwater flows in from the Sacramento and San Joaquin Rivers. Thus, there is a gradient of salinity from freshwater (0) in the rivers to saltwater by the Golden Gate Bridge …
Habitat Preference Of The Introduced Green Crab Carcinus Maenas, Brittany Susan Daum, Andy Chang
Habitat Preference Of The Introduced Green Crab Carcinus Maenas, Brittany Susan Daum, Andy Chang
STAR Program Research Presentations
The aim of this experiment was to determine if Carcinus Maenas (European Green Crab) hhas a habitat preference in Seadrift Lagoon located in Stinson Beach, California. This experiment was accomplished by placing crab traps on the two types of substrate in Seadrift (sand and algae). The traps were pulled up every 24 hours and the size and sex of crabs was recorded. The data was analyzed to see if there was a difference in habitat preference based upon size, sex, and number of crabs. Using a Poisson Regression model, the size and sex of crabs were not significantly different between …
Functional Response Of Protected Larval Delta Smelt, Carrie Fong, Lindsay Sullivan, Wim Kimmerer
Functional Response Of Protected Larval Delta Smelt, Carrie Fong, Lindsay Sullivan, Wim Kimmerer
STAR Program Research Presentations
Delta smelt, Hypomesus transpacificus, is a slender and small-bodied fish, (Limnoithona tetraspina, under a controlled lab setting. Delta smelt at 132 dph were placed in buckets with different concentrations of prey, L. tetraspina. Larval stage delta smelt were given 2 hours to feed. When the experiment was over, fish were then dissected and analyzed to see how many prey were ingested. So far the data suggests that delta smelt may be prey limited. In the controlled lab conditions fish were given much higher prey densities than what would normally be available in the wild. Not having enough prey …
Rescuing Economics From The Discipline: The Green Learning Community, Michael Daley, Owen Grumbling, Richard B. Peterson
Rescuing Economics From The Discipline: The Green Learning Community, Michael Daley, Owen Grumbling, Richard B. Peterson
Business Faculty Publications
Undergraduate economics is poised for reform because of readily available data and multimedia content. However, we argue that deep reform is needed to teach complex contemporary problems. This requires including institutional and historical content and restructuring the classroom to facilitate interdisciplinary pedagogy. Using Colander’s (2006) analysis of reform as a starting point, we review the economics literature to identify alternative approaches and interdisciplinary pedagogy. The Green Learning Community is introduced as an intentional approach that links economics, humanities and environmental studies and provides first-year students adequate time to study, reflect upon, and internalize economic assumptions, models, values, and interdisciplinary insights.
