The Art Of Joseph Edward Southall, Roger Homan Oct 2014

The Art Of Joseph Edward Southall, Roger Homan

Quaker Studies

Joseph Southall (1861-1944) was an artist distinguished in his field, a political activist of considerable stamina and a Quaker greatly loved and honoured by some Friends, albeit not by all. His political involvement as chairman of the Independent Labour Party in Birmingham from 1914 to 1931 afforded an opportunity for witness that was in harmony with his religious affiliation. But his profession as an artist was pursued against a climate of ambivalence toward the arts within the Quaker community, which was diminishing in the early twentieth century but had not altogether disappeared. This paper illustrates the traditional disapprobation of the …

A Quaker Inheritance: An Analysis Of Family Values, Religion And The Childhood And Youth Of George Newman (1870-1948), Heather Smith Oct 2014

A Quaker Inheritance: An Analysis Of Family Values, Religion And The Childhood And Youth Of George Newman (1870-1948), Heather Smith

Quaker Studies

This paper looks at the early life of George Newman, who became an influential figure in the public health movement in England and Wales. It establishes his acceptance and integration within the Quaker community, the adoption of Quaker ideals of mission and service and explores the thinking behind a career choice in public health. Newman was a product of the times in which he lived and it was these unique influences (especially those of individuals) that shaped his understanding and development of services for the education and welfare of school children and the advancement of public health and preventive medicine. …

Elias Hicks And Thomas Shilltoe: Two Paths Diverge, Cynthia E. Kerman Oct 2014

Elias Hicks And Thomas Shilltoe: Two Paths Diverge, Cynthia E. Kerman

Quaker Studies

Two prominent Quaker ministers, English Thomas Shillitoe and American Elias Hicks, at the end of their long lives of exhortation devoted to the mission of persuading others to follow the will of God, came together on the American continent in 1826-29. They turned out to be key players on opposite sides in the struggle which ended with the splitting of American Friends into two antagonistic groups, the Orthodox and the Hicksite.

Through a close reading of the journals of these two men, supplemented by biographies and other relevant materials, this paper analyzes similarities and differences in their views on humanity …

The Role Of Linguistic Ability And Business Expertise For Turn-Taking In Intercultural Business Communication, Misa Fujio Oct 2014

The Role Of Linguistic Ability And Business Expertise For Turn-Taking In Intercultural Business Communication, Misa Fujio

Global Advances in Business Communication

Taking turns in intercultural business meetings is sometimes very challenging for non-native speakers. This study, based on simulated business meetings, investigated what factors are more influential when taking turns, with a special focus on linguistic ability and business experience. In the current study, 12 participants were divided into three groups, each of which consisted of a native speaker of American English, a Japanese businessperson and two Japanese university students. The data were analysed both quantitatively (such as floor-holding time or speech rate) and qualitatively (such as discourse analysis). The analysed results indicated that the participants’ linguistic ability was the strongest …

The Relationship Between Culture And Legal Systems And The Impact On Intercultural Business Communication, Iris I. Varner, Katrin Varner Oct 2014

The Relationship Between Culture And Legal Systems And The Impact On Intercultural Business Communication, Iris I. Varner, Katrin Varner

Global Advances in Business Communication

Abstract

This article examines the connections between culture, law, and intercultural business communication. Both legal systems and cultural priorities come out of the history of a country. Culture affects legal systems just as laws affect changes in culture. While there has been a substantial body of research on the impact of culture on communication in a global setting over the past few decades, there has been very little on the role of law. We focus mostly on issues of privacy and employment communication. Europeans, and in particular Germans, establish specific rules and regulations whereas Americans have fewer laws. Europeans have …

Mobile Phone Use In Meetings Among Chinese Professionals: Perspectives On Multicommunication And Civility, Peter W. Cardon, Ying Dai

Global Advances in Business Communication

The purpose of this study was to examine the nature of mobile phone use in meetings among Chinese professionals. We replicated and extended surveys conducted in North America in order to draw cross-cultural comparisons. We surveyed 186 Chinese professionals about their attitudes toward mobile phones in meetings, their actual mobile phone actions in meetings, and their attitudes about appropriate response time to digital messages. Based on survey results, we concluded the following: (a) Chinese professionals are far more accepting of mobile phone use in meetings than are American professionals; (b) older Chinese professionals are more accepting of mobile phone use …

Not All Feminist Ideas Are Equal: Anti-Capitalist Feminism And Female Complicity, Giuliana Monteverde Oct 2014

Not All Feminist Ideas Are Equal: Anti-Capitalist Feminism And Female Complicity, Giuliana Monteverde

Journal of International Women's Studies

This paper advocates a more explicit feminist discussion of female complicity by demonstrating that existing discourses on women’s participation in patriarchal practices are inadequate. By looking at two contemporary anti-capitalist feminist texts—One Dimensional Woman by Nina Power and Meat Market: Female Flesh under Capitalism by Laurie Penny—I show that these feminists acknowledge the disrupted sex binary, but have not produced texts that reflect this understanding. Whilst these authors admirably concern themselves with structural reasons for inequality—rather than blaming individual women—their treatment of complicit women is wavering. They are scornful of powerful American Republican women and of ‘fun’ feminists, but …

You Are What You (M)Eat: Explorations Of Meat-Eating, Masculinity And Masquerade, Amy Calvert Oct 2014

You Are What You (M)Eat: Explorations Of Meat-Eating, Masculinity And Masquerade, Amy Calvert

Journal of International Women's Studies

Food consumption is frequently linked to identity and to who we are as individuals, which I explore through the analysis of the US reality television series Man V. Food. Through close readings of various scenes, I look at representations of hegemonic masculine performance, and the sexualisation of women and meat. In light of my analysis, I argue that the show is both post-feminist and part of a wider backlash against feminist action. Man V. Food is analysed in consideration of the wider phenomena of masculine crisis and backlash against various social movements, specifically recent feminist and vegetarian/vegan movements. This …

Cross-Gender Casting As Feminist Interventions In The Staging Of Early Modern Plays, Gemma Miller Oct 2014

Cross-Gender Casting As Feminist Interventions In The Staging Of Early Modern Plays, Gemma Miller

Journal of International Women's Studies

This essay explores cross-gender casting of Renaissance canonical texts in modern British theatrical institutions as an act of feminist activism. Reversing early modern all-male theatrical practices, female-male re-gendering can not only interrogate the misogyny immanent in the works themselves, but also expose the ideological structures that continue to collude with these values on the contemporary stage and in society more generally. Through a comparative analysis of all-female productions such as Julius Caesar (dir. by Phyllida Lloyd, Donmar Warehouse, 2012-13) and selective cross-gendering, as exemplified in Edward II, (dir. by Joe Hill-Gibbins, The National Theatre, 2013), I argue that cross-gender …

The Health Advantage Of A Vegan Diet: Exploring The Gut Microbiota Connection, Marian Glick-Bauer, Ming-Chin Yeh Oct 2014

The Health Advantage Of A Vegan Diet: Exploring The Gut Microbiota Connection, Marian Glick-Bauer, Ming-Chin Yeh

Publications and Research

This review examines whether there is evidence that a strict vegan diet confers health advantages beyond that of a vegetarian diet or overall healthy eating. Few studies include vegan subjects as a distinct experimental group, yet when vegan diets are directly compared to vegetarian and omnivorous diets, a pattern of protective health benefits emerges. The relatively recent inclusion of vegan diets in studies of gut microbiota and health allows us the opportunity to assess whether the vegan gut microbiota is distinct, and whether the health advantages characteristic of a vegan diet may be partially explained by the associated microbiota profile. …

Vonwürdig, Rober Long Foreman Oct 2014

Vonwürdig, Rober Long Foreman

Booth

When she went home, she ate leftover spaghetti and watched a game show, in which celebrity contestants were given a series of challenges. One of them was called “One-Wording.”

Never mind the details of the game, which Ellie paid no attention to. It was the name that set something off in her, like a trigger.

“Out of nowhere,” Ellie later said, “I thought of the word Vonwürdig. I don’t know why. It sounded German, or it looked German in my head.”

Ellie did what anyone would do. She googled “Vonwürdig.

The first result was an automated translation. The word meant …
