Implementing Professional Learning Communities In A High-Performing School District To Address Stagnating Student Performance, Alan Addley Oct 2014

Implementing Professional Learning Communities In A High-Performing School District To Address Stagnating Student Performance, Alan Addley

Doctoral Dissertations

Abstract

This study explored the implementation of professional learning community (PLC) teams as a primary strategy for school improvement in the immediate schools (grades 3-6) and middle school (grades 7 & 8) of a high performing school district. The study used program theory as an evaluation approach (Chen and Rossi, 1992; Rogers, Petrosino, Huebner & Hacsi, 2000; Weiss, 1996). Through the use of a logic model, program theory was used to retrospectively investigate the PLC implementation steps taken by principals that were intended to change teachers’ practices and lead to higher levels of student achievement. The evaluation of the PLC …

The Effects Of A Modified Direct Instruction Flashcard System On A 14 Year-Old-Student With Learning Behavioral Issues Enrolled In A Behavior Intervention Classroom, Caitlin Lebrun, Skylar Jones, Jennifer Neyman, Thomas F. Mclaughlin

International Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of a Direct Instruction (DI) flashcard system on the mastery of the multiplication facts by a 14-year-old boy with learning and behavioral issues. The participant attended a low-income high school located in a large urban area in the Pacific Northwest. A changing criterion design was employed to evaluate the efficacy of DI flashcards. When DI flashcards were employed, the performance increased and the participant met or was close to criterion for each criterion ceiling. The DI flashcard procedure was easy to implement and evaluate, and the current paper includes suggestions …

Blue Is In The Eye Of The Beholder: A Cross Cultural Study On Color Perception And Memory, Mark Douglas Lowry Oct 2014

Blue Is In The Eye Of The Beholder: A Cross Cultural Study On Color Perception And Memory, Mark Douglas Lowry

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

According the linguistic relativity hypothesis, the language one speaks affects how one thinks. Because languages differ in how they categorize color, linguistic relativity has often been tested by conducting experiments on color perception and memory. This study examines the linguistic relativity hypothesis using ecologically valid stimuli: pictures of eyes. Because Russian-speakers are more likely to describe blue/grey eyes as grey, whereas English speakers are more likely to describe them as blue, English and Russian participants were asked to match the overall color of blue eyes to a color scale. There were three conditions. In the first condition (perception), participants saw …

Medicaid Pays For That? An Exploratory, Mixed-Methods Analysis Of Florida Home Birth, Nicole K. Demetriou Oct 2014

Medicaid Pays For That? An Exploratory, Mixed-Methods Analysis Of Florida Home Birth, Nicole K. Demetriou

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The overwhelming social norm for pregnant women in the U.S. is to receive prenatal care from an obstetrician and to give birth in a hospital setting. However, the incidence of midwifery care and out-of-hospital birth is increasing, particularly among White, non-Hispanic women. Florida has been considered a "model" state for home birth midwifery given legislative support that mandates coverage of all types of midwifery (e.g., Certified Professional Midwives and Certified Nurse-Midwives) care in all birth settings (e.g., hospital, home, birth center) and by all forms of insurance (e.g., commercial and Medicaid). Medicaid is the payer source for nearly half of …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The main purpose of this paper is to explore the current status of public libraries of Varanasi. A structured questionnaire was designed and personally distributed to 100 respondents over a period of seven months for the study. Responses present a dismal outlook of the libraries. Financial deficit and lack of computers, infrastructure and staff have stagnated the development of these libraries. These libraries continue to stand the same way as they stood 60 years before.

Deconstructing The Rhetoric Of Fear In Post 9/11 Young Adult Literature, Ronald Dean Straight Oct 2014

Deconstructing The Rhetoric Of Fear In Post 9/11 Young Adult Literature, Ronald Dean Straight

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

This study demonstrates how M.T. Anderson's "Feed" (2002), Scott Westerfeld's "Uglies" (2006), and Veronica Roth's "Divergent" (2011) offer young adult readers alternative messages through tropes and rhetorical devices within a mediated reality. The outcome of these messages offers mixed messages about rebellion and conformity to young adults living in a post 9/11 global community. The development of this message begins with teens in "Feed" exploring a dystopian future where society is tied together through technology that eliminates boundaries. The teens within the story explore a world, for a week, where those boundaries are reestablished due to an act of terror, …

Yo Ho Ho And A Bucket Of Cash The Need To Enchance Regional Effort To Combat Piracy And Armed Robbery Against Ships In Southeast Asia, Hersapta Mulyono

Indonesian Journal of International Law

The problem of piracy is that the world press nowadays often focuses on waters off the coast of Somalia and the Gulf of Aden. That is understandable given the recent phenomenal upsurge of piratical activities in that poverty stricken part of the world. Poverty, alongwith degradation of the rule of law, is often a catalyst for criminal acts, and if that situation occurred in maritime neighborhood, it usually takes form of piracy and armed robbery against ships. Southeast Asia is one of those places. The primary purpose of this essay is to examine the deficiencies of regional efforts to combat …

The Original Understanding Of Constitutional Legitimacy, Ilan Wurman Oct 2014

The Original Understanding Of Constitutional Legitimacy, Ilan Wurman

BYU Law Review

This Article argues that three influential schools of originalism, which we might label libertarian, progressive, and conservative, adhere to particular understandings of constitutional legitimacy, which then inform their particular constitutional hermeneutics. The Article demonstrates that as originally understood by the Founders, however, constitutional legitimacy depended on all three conceptions advocated by these schools of thought—that is, the Constitution had to protect natural rights, it had to enable self-government, and it had to be ratified by popular sovereignty. Further, the Article gives considerable treatment—remarkably for the first time in the law review literature— to James Madison’s letter in response to Thomas …

Remote Sensing And Ground-Based Weather Forcing Data Analysis For Streamflow Simulation, José Alberto Infante Corona, Tarendra Lakhankar, Soni M. Pradhanang, Reza Khanbilvardi

Publications and Research

Hydrological simulation, based on weather inputs and the physical characterization of the watershed, is a suitable approach to predict the corresponding streamflow. This work, carried out on four different watersheds, analyzed the impacts of using three different meteorological data inputs in the same model to compare the model’s accuracy when simulated and observed streamflow are compared. Meteorological data from the Daily Global Historical Climatology Network (GHCN-D), National Land Data Assimilation Systems (NLDAS) and the National Operation Hydrological Remote Sensing Center’s Interactive Snow Information (NOHRSC-ISI) were used as an input into the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) hydrological model and …

Following The Faith Of The Father; Sayyid 'Uthm N'S Son Ya Y On Mosque Etiquette, E. P. Wieringa

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

The Dal 'il al-n shid 'an a k m al-wal 'im f -l-mas jid (Arguments of the Seeker for Legal Judgements concerning Festive Meals in Mosques) is a short tract, written in 1938 in Malay in Arabic script by Ya y b. 'Uthm n b. 'AbdAll h, none other than a son of the renowned Batavian muft Sayyid 'Uthm n (1822-1914). Protesting against the (in his view) bid'a (unauthorized religious innovation) () of organizing festive meals in mosques, he felt it his duty to try to stop his co-religionists from doing wrong. Not being a theologian himself, his pamphlet is …

Indonesia, Modernity And Some Problems Of Religious Adaptation, June Mcdaniel

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

This article discusses the challenges of adaptation for Indonesian religion. It describes the ways that the major Indonesian religions have changed to fit the requirements of being recognized religions, and focuses as an example on the ways that Balinese Hinduism has changed to become Agama Hindu Dharma Indonesia. It also examines the traditional theological problem of "faith and works" in the Indonesian context, and the concerns used to balance modernization and religious freedom.

Southeast Asia In The Ancient Indian Ocean World; Combining Historical Linguistic And Archaeological Approaches, Tom G. Hoogervorst Oct 2014

Southeast Asia In The Ancient Indian Ocean World; Combining Historical Linguistic And Archaeological Approaches, Tom G. Hoogervorst

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

This PhD dissertation examines the role of insular Southeast Asia in the trans-regional networks of maritime trade that shaped the history of Indian Ocean. The work brings together data and approaches from archaeology, historical linguistics and other disciplines, proposing a reconstruction of cultural and linguistic contact between Southeast Asia and its maritime neighbours to the west in order to advance our historical understanding of this part of the world. Numerous biological, commercial and technical items are examined. The study underlines that the analysis of lexical data is one of the strongest tools to detect and analyse contact between two or …

Historical Inquiry Into The Construction Of Religion As A School Subject For Catholic Schools In Australia, Thomas A. O'Donoghue, David Byrne Oct 2014

Historical Inquiry Into The Construction Of Religion As A School Subject For Catholic Schools In Australia, Thomas A. O'Donoghue, David Byrne

eJournal of Catholic Education in Australasia

One of the most distinctive features of Catholic schools, both past and present, is their religious character. In Australia, as in many other parts of the world, the Catholic community invested significant energy developing and preserving this character. Central to this has been the teaching of Religion. Yet, from a historical perspective, there has been little effort undertaken to understand how Religion as a subject in Catholic schools has been constructed. This paper takes its lead from the latter observation. It is in three parts. First, the general historical background is outlined. Second, the importance of producing historical analyses of …
