A Historical Analysis Of Natural Gas Demand, Nathan Richard Dalbec Jan 2014

A Historical Analysis Of Natural Gas Demand, Nathan Richard Dalbec

Agribusiness and Applied Economics

This thesis analyzes demand in the US energy market for natural gas, oil, and coal over the period of 1918-2013 and examines their price relationship over the period of 2007-2013. Diagnostic tests for time series were used; Augmented Dickey-Fuller, Kwiatkowski–Phillips–Schmidt–Shin, Johansen cointegration, Granger Causality and weak exogeneity tests. Directed acyclic graphs were used as a complimentary test for endogeneity. Due to the varied results in determining endogeneity, a seemingly unrelated regression model was used which assumes all right hand side variables in the three demand equations were exogenous. A number of factors were significant in determining demand for natural gas …

The Cully Park Inter-Tribal Gathering Garden: Place-Making Through Indigenous Eco-Cultural Reclamation, Randall Morris Jan 2014

The Cully Park Inter-Tribal Gathering Garden: Place-Making Through Indigenous Eco-Cultural Reclamation, Randall Morris

Geography Masters Research Papers

Portland's history and geography are patterned, like any city, by spatial imaginings both utopian and dystopian. This examination of the raw landscape of the city’s nascent garden space in Cully Park is an attempt to research a third manifestation of space, one that might be called heterotopia. This research into the Inter-Tribal Gathering Garden is a search for a more complete accounting of place, one which also acknowledges the variety of non-human agencies (a list which would include streets, planning documents, various plants, historical accounts, and even the consistent boundaries of the space itself) found in all heterogeneous …

The Cost Of Hauling Timber: A Comparison Of Raster- And Vector- Based Travel-Time Estimates In Gis, Sara M. Loreno Jan 2014

The Cost Of Hauling Timber: A Comparison Of Raster- And Vector- Based Travel-Time Estimates In Gis, Sara M. Loreno

Geography Masters Research Papers

The cost of transporting forest products from harvest site to processing facility is a critical indicator of timber project feasibility. In order to accurately assess these timber haul costs, least-cost travel-time estimates among the site and the facility can be estimated using vector- or raster-based GIS methods. This study explores the applicability of both the raster- and vector-techniques within a variety of landscapes, including forested areas where comprehensive transportation data is limited. A comparison between the travel-time estimates derived from both methods was performed on three study sites using real-world data. The comparison also tested the effect of resolution on …

Impact Of Trade Openness On Technical Efficiency: Agricultural Sector Of The European Union, Jarrett Donald Hart Jan 2014

Impact Of Trade Openness On Technical Efficiency: Agricultural Sector Of The European Union, Jarrett Donald Hart

Agribusiness and Applied Economics

This thesis examines the impact of trade openness (TOP) on technical efficiency (TE) in the agricultural sector of the European Union (EU). The hypothesis is that TOP, the share of agricultural imports and exports relative to agricultural GDP, can increase TE. The objective is to add to the limited number of studies focused on the impact of TOP on TE by inspecting an unexamined group of countries, the EU. Results show that TOP leads to an increase in TE over time. However, an instantaneous decrease in efficiency is observed. This outcome contributes to the mixed results found when examining the …

Consciousness And Mental Qualities For Auditory Sensations, Adriana Renero Jan 2014

Consciousness And Mental Qualities For Auditory Sensations, Adriana Renero

Publications and Research

The contribution of recent theories of sound and audition has been extremely significant for the development of a philosophy of auditory perception; however, none tackle the question of how our consciousness of auditory states arises. My goal is to show how consciousness about our auditory experience gets triggered. I examine a range of auditory mental phenomena to show how we are able to capture qualitative distinctions of auditory sensations. I argue that our consciousness of auditory states consists in having thoughts that organize our experience. Although my proposals could be adapted to fit with other theories of consciousness, here I …

Altering Endoplasmic Reticulum Stress In A Model Of Blast-Induced Traumatic Brain Injury Controls Cellular Fate And Ameliorates Neuropsychiatric Symptoms, Aric Flint Logsdon, Ryan Coddington Turner, Brandon Peter Lucke-Wold, Matthew James Robson, Zachary James Naser, Kelly Elizabeth Smith, Rae Reiko Matsumoto

Faculty Publications & Research of the TUC College of Pharmacy

Neuronal injury following blast-induced traumatic brain injury (bTBI) increases the risk for neuropsychiatric disorders, yet the pathophysiology remains poorly understood. Blood-brain-barrier (BBB) disruption, endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, and apoptosis have all been implicated in bTBI. Microvessel compromise is a primary effect of bTBI and is postulated to cause subcellular secondary effects such as ER stress. What remains unclear is how these secondary effects progress to personality disorders in humans exposed to head trauma. To investigate this we exposed male rats to a clinically relevant bTBI model we have recently developed. The study examined initial BBB disruption using Evan’s blue (EB), …

Kinesthetic Activities For The Classroom, Elliot E. Mylott, Justin C. Dunlap, Lester Lampert, Ralf Widenhorn

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Educators have found that kinesthetic involvement in an experiment or demonstration can engage students in a powerful way. With that as our goal, we developed three activities that allow students to connect with and quantitatively explore key physics principles from mechanics with three fun physical challenges. By presenting these activities as competitions, we can challenge students to use what they know about the relevant physics to improve their performance and beat their own score or those of other students. Each activity uses an original, real-time data collecting program that offers students and educators a simple, clear method to demonstrate various …

Howard Elman's Farewell, Ernest Hebert Jan 2014

Howard Elman's Farewell, Ernest Hebert

Dartmouth Scholarship

Part Falstaff, part King Lear, but all American, Howard Elman was a fifty-something workingman when he burst onto the literary scene in The Dogs of March, the first novel of the Darby Chronicles. Now in this, its seventh installment, the Darby constable is an eighty-something widower who wants to do "a great thing" before he motors off into the sunset.

Maybe Howard achieves this goal, but he manages it in strange, wonderful, and dangerous ways. On his quest he's aided, abetted, hindered, and befuddled by his middle-aged children, his hundred-year-old hermit friend Cooty Patterson, a voice in his head, and …

Whisper My Name, Ernest Hebert Jan 2014

Whisper My Name, Ernest Hebert

Dartmouth Scholarship

The institution of town meeting, the beauty of the landscape, and the enduring qualities of the architecture all give the New England town the power to shape the identity of its inhabitants--in a good way. This premise is put on trial--and to a vote--in Whisper My Name, the third novel in Hebert's Darby Chronicles.

The story unfolds as seen through the eyes of three men: the reporter Roland LaChance, the farmer Avalon Hillary, and the founder of a land trust, Raphael "Reggie" Salmon. Magnus Mall, a national corporation, wants to buy the Hillary farm and transform the property into a …

Auroral Ionospheric F Region Density Cavity Formation And Evolution: Mica Campaign Results, M. Zettergren, Kristina A. Lynch, D. Hampton, M. Nicolls, B. Wright, M. Conde, J. Moen, M. Lessard, R. Miceli, S. Powell

Dartmouth Scholarship

Auroral ionospheric F region density depletions observed by PFISR (Poker Flat Incoherent Scatter Radar) during the MICA (Magnetosphere-Ionosphere Coupling in the Alfvén Resonator) sounding rocket campaign are critically examined alongside complementary numerical simulations. Particular processes of interest include cavity formation due to intense frictional heating and Pedersen drifts, evolution in the presence of structured precipitation, and refilling due to impact ionization and downflows. Our analysis uses an ionospheric fluid model which solves conservation of mass, momentum, and energy equations for all major ionospheric species. These fluid equations are coupled to an electrostatic current continuity equation to self-consistently describe auroral electric …

Rational Linear Spaces On Hypersurfaces Over Quasi-Algebraically Closed Fields, Todd Cochrane, Craig V. Spencer, Hee-Sung Yang Jan 2014

Rational Linear Spaces On Hypersurfaces Over Quasi-Algebraically Closed Fields, Todd Cochrane, Craig V. Spencer, Hee-Sung Yang

Dartmouth Scholarship

Let k = F-q(t) be the rational function fi eld over F-q and f(x) is an element of k[x(1),..., x(s)] be a form of degree d. For l is an element of N, we establish that whenever s > l + Sigma(d)(w=1)w(2)(d - w + l - 1 l - 1), the projective hypersurface f(x) = 0 contains a k-rational linear space of projective dimension l. We also show that if s > 1 + d(d + 1)(2d + 1)/6, then for any k-rational zero a of f(x) there are in fi nitely many s-tuples (pi(1),...,pi(s) ) of monic irreducible polynomials over …

Benthic And Pelagic Pathways Of Methylmercury Bioaccumulation In Estuarine Food Webs Of The Northeast United States, Celia Y. Chen, Mark E. Borsuk, Deenie M. Bugge, Terill Hollweg Jan 2014

Benthic And Pelagic Pathways Of Methylmercury Bioaccumulation In Estuarine Food Webs Of The Northeast United States, Celia Y. Chen, Mark E. Borsuk, Deenie M. Bugge, Terill Hollweg

Dartmouth Scholarship

Methylmercury (MeHg) is a contaminant of global concern that bioaccumulates and bioamagnifies in marine food webs. Lower trophic level fauna are important conduits of MeHg from sediment and water to estuarine and coastal fish harvested for human consumption. However, the sources and pathways of MeHg to these coastal fisheries are poorly known particularly the potential for transfer of MeHg from the sediment to biotic compartments. Across a broad gradient of human land impacts, we analyzed MeHg concentrations in food webs at ten estuarine sites in the Northeast US (from the Hackensack Meadowlands, NJ to the Gulf of Maine). MeHg concentrations …

A Direct Solver With O(N) Complexity For Variable Coefficient Elliptic Pdes Discretized Via A High-Order Composite Spectral Collocation Method, A. Gillman, P. G. Martinsson Jan 2014

A Direct Solver With O(N) Complexity For Variable Coefficient Elliptic Pdes Discretized Via A High-Order Composite Spectral Collocation Method, A. Gillman, P. G. Martinsson

Dartmouth Scholarship

A numerical method for solving elliptic PDEs with variable coefficients on two-dimensional domains is presented. The method is based on high-order composite spectral approximations and is designed for problems with smooth solutions. The resulting system of linear equations is solved using a direct (as opposed to iterative) solver that has optimal $O(N)$ complexity for all stages of the computation when applied to problems with nonoscillatory solutions such as the Laplace and the Stokes equations. Numerical examples demonstrate that the scheme is capable of computing solutions with a relative accuracy of $10^{-10}$ or better for challenging problems such as highly oscillatory …

Effects Of Dietary Supplementation Of Flaxseed And Metabolizable Protein On Reproduction In Mares And Ewes, Tara Swanson Jan 2014

Effects Of Dietary Supplementation Of Flaxseed And Metabolizable Protein On Reproduction In Mares And Ewes, Tara Swanson

Animal Sciences

Two experiments evaluated the effects of dietary supplementation on maternal reproductive parameters. In Experiment 1, 16 mares were assigned to dietary treatments: control, flaxseed, or linseed meal for 16 wk. Blood samples were analyzed for progesterone (P4), serum chemistry panel values, and fatty acids. Flaxseed supplementation increased (P < 0.01) alphalinolenic acid concentration, but treatment had no other effects. In Experiment 2, 45 multiparous ewes were allotted to dietary levels of metabolizable protein (MP): 60% (MP60), 80% (MP80), or 100% (MP100) from d 100 to d 130 of gestation. At d 130 ewes were slaughtered and tissues harvested. There was a day x fetal number interaction for P4, estradiol 17β, and thyroxine (T4) along with a treatment x fetal number interaction for T4. There was a day effect for cortisol and triiodothryonine. Results indicate dietary supplementation alters maternal parameters including hormones and fatty acids.

Impacts Of Supplemental Arginine On Ewe Reproductive Performance, Alison Ryan Crane Jan 2014

Impacts Of Supplemental Arginine On Ewe Reproductive Performance, Alison Ryan Crane

Animal Sciences

The objective of this study was to determine the effects of injectable and oral arginine (Arg) supplementation provided 14 d post-breeding on reproductive performance of fall lambing ewes. Upon estrus detection (d 0) ewes were randomly assigned to one of six treatments for a 14-d treatment period: injectable saline (CON; n = 25), injectable alanine (IVALA; n = 20), injectable arginine (IVARG; n = 23), oral rumen-protected Arg (RPARG; n = 20), oral soybean meal (SBM; n = 23), or oral fishmeal (FM; n = 24). Weaning rates were higher (P < 0.05) in Arg supplemented ewes. Plasma progesterone and serum Arg concentrations exhibited a treatment and day effect (P < 0.05), but no treatment × day interaction was observed (P > 0.05). In contrast to previous research, supplemental Arg during …

The Use Of Behavioral Measures To Quantify Welfare In Dairy Cows And Lambs, Nichole Marie Chapel Jan 2014

The Use Of Behavioral Measures To Quantify Welfare In Dairy Cows And Lambs, Nichole Marie Chapel

Animal Sciences

The primary objective of the experiments described in this thesis was to use quantitative behavioral measures of livestock to evaluate animal welfare. In one study, the effects of a therapeutic drug in lame dairy cows were evaluated for alleviating pain associated with lameness and hoof trimming. Lameness pain was measured using lying and standing times as well as locomotion scoring. No effect on lameness indicators or milk production was found for hoof trimming or drug administration. In the second study, behaviors associated with maternal nutritional plane during gestation were measured in lambs. Lambs born to nutritionally restricted dams behaved differently …
