Comment On “The Effect Of Same-Sex Marriage Laws On Different-Sex Marriage: Evidence From The Netherlands”, Alexis Dinno Jan 2014

Comment On “The Effect Of Same-Sex Marriage Laws On Different-Sex Marriage: Evidence From The Netherlands”, Alexis Dinno

Community Health Faculty Publications and Presentations

In the recent Demography article titled “The Effect of Same-Sex Marriage Laws on Different-Sex Marriage: Evidence From the Netherlands,” Trandafir attempted to answer the question, Are rates of opposite sex marriage affected by legal recognition of same sex marriages? The results of his approach to statistical inference—looking for evidence of a difference in rates of opposite-sex marriage—provide an absence of evidence of such effects. However, the validity of his conclusion of no causal relationship between same-sex marriage laws and rates of opposite-sex marriage is threatened by the fact that Trandafir did not also look for equivalence in rates of opposite-sex …

Open Hearts Or Smoke And Mirrors: Metaphorical Framing And Frame Conflicts In A Public Meeting, L. David Ritchie, Lynne Cameron Jan 2014

Open Hearts Or Smoke And Mirrors: Metaphorical Framing And Frame Conflicts In A Public Meeting, L. David Ritchie, Lynne Cameron

Communication Faculty Publications and Presentations

The concept of framing has been widely used to help understand how aspects of messages can shape people’s expectations and consequently influence the outcomes of communicative interactions. In this study we examine transcripts of a contentious and ultimately unsuccessful public meeting between police officials and members of the African-American community following the fatal shooting of a young African-American woman by police officers. We show how contradictory framing between public officials and members of the community as well as within each group may have contributed to unintended and asymmetrical ironies, and ultimately to the failure of the meeting to achieve the …

Frozen, Old, Or New? : Comparing Biochemical Markers And Tissue Oxygenation In Transfused Blood, Connor Wiles Jan 2014

Frozen, Old, Or New? : Comparing Biochemical Markers And Tissue Oxygenation In Transfused Blood, Connor Wiles

University Honors Theses

The transfusion of red blood cells is a necessary therapy used to treat anemia that often results from traumatic hemorrhage. The traditional method of storing red blood cells prior to transfusion in the United States has been as a liquid in a refrigerated fashion at a temperature between two and eight degrees Celsius. Throughout the storage duration, the red cells undergo a series of structural, functional, and biochemical changes commonly known as the storage lesion. Increased length of storage has been associated with increased rates of infection, as well as higher incidents of mortality. We hypothesized that this prospective, randomized, …

For The Hard Of Hearing: A Catholic Novelist Confronts Modernity, Louis Benjamin Maltese Jan 2014

For The Hard Of Hearing: A Catholic Novelist Confronts Modernity, Louis Benjamin Maltese

University Honors Theses

In the early part of the 20th century German Catholic theologian and cultural critic, Romano Guardini, published The End of Modernity, outlining the conceptual shift of self-identity and cosmology from Antiquity to Modernity. Characterizing modernity as turning upon a false self-identity termed “mass man.” This false image of life furthers the individual person’s fragmentation, and deafens their ability to hear the Catholic voice. Walker Percy’s familiarity with Guardini is most explicit in The Last Gentleman where Percy represents the difficulty of hearing the call of Catholicism. Recently, Paul Elie and Dana Gioia have pointed out the lacking literary presence …

Children Of Alcoholics: How Patterns And Perceptions Of The Past Affect The Future, Lindsey Anne Cochran Jan 2014

Children Of Alcoholics: How Patterns And Perceptions Of The Past Affect The Future, Lindsey Anne Cochran

University Honors Theses

Parental alcoholism and its effects on children has been a problem widely researched for years. This thesis seeks to find the patterns and roles that are established for children living with parental alcoholism and if/why these patterns are maintained into the individual's adulthood. In doing so, parental alcoholism and its effects on children and adult children will be examined through the lenses of symbolic interactionism and family systems theory. Several concepts that affect roles and patterns are discussed, some of the more prominent being: a) symbols, b) circular causality c) feedback loops, and d) roles. Through an in depth theoretical …

Comics And The Complicit Reader: Closure As A Transgressive Technique In Transmetropolitan, Kyle Knox Jan 2014

Comics And The Complicit Reader: Closure As A Transgressive Technique In Transmetropolitan, Kyle Knox

University Honors Theses

In recent years, the critical analysis of comic books has come to be a respected field in popular culture studies. Transmetropolitan, a 60 issue comic book created by writer Warren Ellis and artist Darick Robertson, became a one of the most popular nonsuperhero series throughout its publication by DC Comics in the late 1990's and early 2000's. Since the beginning of the present decade, scholars have paid increased attention to the thematic content of the series, identifying the text as a brutal transgressive satire of Western consumerist culture. This paper examines the formal structure of the work, primarily through …

Youth Engagement And Portland Neighborhood Associations, Kelly Sellers Jan 2014

Youth Engagement And Portland Neighborhood Associations, Kelly Sellers

University Honors Theses

This research addresses the intersection between youth engagement and Portland neighborhood associations, and explores future implications for young people’s civic engagement and participation in decisions that affect their lives. Since much of the literature on public participation does not specifically address young people’s assets or needs, this research provides an exploratory view on youth perceptions of place and neighborhood associations. Through semi-structured interviews, three members of the Multnomah Youth Commission, the official youth policy body for the City of Portland and Multnomah County, shared their insights, regarding current awareness of and future hopes for Portland neighborhood associations. The lack of …

Understanding Women In Prison: A Review Of Gender Specific Needs And Risk Assessments And Their Policy And Research Implications, Elise Barlow Jan 2014

Understanding Women In Prison: A Review Of Gender Specific Needs And Risk Assessments And Their Policy And Research Implications, Elise Barlow

University Honors Theses

In the last 30 years, the number of women in the criminal justice system has risen significantly, yet the criminal justice system still bases much of its policy on empirical research conducted on a majority male subjects. Risk and need assessments, generally used to categorize inmates into varying risk levels to lower recidivism, have been faulted by many feminist scholars for having little pertinence for women. Their lack of gender sensitive factors has left many scholars questioning their validity. Available correctional programs are based on the knowledge collected by those who are supportive of these "gender neutral" assessments. Because of …

International Perspectives On Sustainable Agriculture In Cuba, B. Danielle Smith Jan 2014

International Perspectives On Sustainable Agriculture In Cuba, B. Danielle Smith

University Honors Theses

Since the economic crisis following the collapse of the Soviet Union, Cuba has restructured their agriculture with a greater focus on domestic production of domestically consumed produce, and a dramatic reduction of petroleum products in all aspects of food production. This overhaul has included the broad application of what is termed agroecology – agricultural practices which focus on principles of biodiversity and sustainability – and inter-farm cooperation facilitated by the National Association of Small Farmers (ANAP) and Campesino a Campesino. Academics and journalists from within and abroad have critically examined aspects of the novel reforms developed in the country …

The Secret Life Of The Cross-Cultural Fairy Tale: A Comparative Study Of The Indonesian Folktale "Bawang Merah, Bawang Putih" And Three European Fairy Tales, Sarah Nicole Donaldson Jan 2014

The Secret Life Of The Cross-Cultural Fairy Tale: A Comparative Study Of The Indonesian Folktale "Bawang Merah, Bawang Putih" And Three European Fairy Tales, Sarah Nicole Donaldson

University Honors Theses

Folklore was one of the earliest developed forms of story telling, and fairy tales especially remain influentially pervasive in society today. In this paper, I seek to deconstruct five versions of the Indonesian folktale "Bawang Merah, Bawang Putih," through comparisons with the European fairy tales "One-Eye, Two-Eyes, and Three-Eyes," "The Fairies," and "Mother Holle," using an interdisciplinary approach incorporating psychoanalytic and feminist theories in a close reading of the tales. Through tracking the transfer of money in the tales, I establish that heroines rarely keep their money as young, marriageable girls are considered commodities themselves within the fairy tale world. …

The Woman In White: Problems With Editorial History & Classification Of Genre In Proposing A New Edition, Andréa Franke Jan 2014

The Woman In White: Problems With Editorial History & Classification Of Genre In Proposing A New Edition, Andréa Franke

University Honors Theses

Wilkie Collins’s novel The Woman in White, first published in Charles Dickens’s journal All the Year Round, brings many issues to publishers who wish to create a new edition. As The Woman in White went through three editorial transitions during Collins’s life it is difficult for book publishers to decide whether to create a new eclectic text of the existing three original editions or to use one edition as the copy text. Beyond this, existing editions of this work, including the Barnes & Noble Classics edition and the Oxford World Classics editions, create problems in their paratext as …

"L'Affaire Des Princes": Baroque Architecture And Factional Politics In Regency Paris, 1715-1723, Jordan Hallmark Jan 2014

"L'Affaire Des Princes": Baroque Architecture And Factional Politics In Regency Paris, 1715-1723, Jordan Hallmark

University Honors Theses

It has long been noted by architectural historians that the exuberant stylistic idiom of the Roman Baroque, which spread throughout most of Europe in the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, failed to exert much of an influence on the architecture of early modern France. Scholars have traditionally interpreted this failure as a conscious rejection of the Roman Baroque style on the part of the French monarchy, which, with the rise of royal absolutism during the personal reign of Louis XIV (1661-1715) , adopted the classical style of architecture and design as a formal language with which to assert the absolute …

Mindfulness And Test Performance After Stereotype Activation: A Randomized Experiment, Charles J.Z. Daniel Jan 2014

Mindfulness And Test Performance After Stereotype Activation: A Randomized Experiment, Charles J.Z. Daniel

University Honors Theses

Although stereotype threat – pressure to avoid confirming or being judged based on a stereotype – has been found to affect performance on an array of tasks, few studies have examined ways to alleviate the threat after it has been activated. Previous research has demonstrated several outcomes of mindfulness exercises - increased emotional regulation, increased attentional regulation, change in perspective of self, and greater resources available to devote to learning – which parallel four potential mechanisms for stereotype threat: anxiety and SNS arousal, decreased working memory capacity, mindset, and effort. The present study tested the impact of two interventions - …

Trace Metal Analysis Of Drinking Water At Portland State University, Emma Claire Prichard Jan 2014

Trace Metal Analysis Of Drinking Water At Portland State University, Emma Claire Prichard

Buenos Aires, Fernando Degiovanni, Fernando Rosenberg Jan 2014

Buenos Aires, Fernando Degiovanni, Fernando Rosenberg

Publications and Research

One of the most important city ports of the Western Hemisphere, Buenos Aires has a history inextricably connected to the fluctuations of the Atlantic economy as well as to its strategic position as a gateway to vast and fertile flatlands that extend far beyond the city limits. Founded and re-founded in the 16th century as a secondary colonial outpost, Buenos Aires was dramatically transformed by the demands of the European markets at the turn of both the 18th and 19th centuries. In this context, two crucial developments are decisive for understanding the physical, social, and cultural fabric of the city: …

Geodesy- And Geology-Based Slip-Rate Models For The Western United States (Excluding California) National Seismic Hazard Maps, Mark D. Petersen, Yuehua Zeng, Kathleen M. Haller, Robert Mccaffrey, William C. Hammond, Peter Bird, Morgan Moschetti, Zheng-Kang Shen, Jayne Bormann, Wayne R. Thatcher

Geology Faculty Publications and Presentations

The 2014 National Seismic Hazard Maps for the conterminous United States incorporate additional uncertainty in fault slip-rate parameter that controls the earthquake-activity rates than was applied in previous versions of the hazard maps. This additional uncertainty is accounted for by new geodesy- and geology-based slip-rate models for the Western United States. Models that were considered include an updated geologic model based on expert opinion and four combined inversion models informed by both geologic and geodetic input. The two block models considered indicate significantly higher slip rates than the expert opinion and the two fault-based combined inversion models. For the hazard …

Central Cascadia Subduction Zone Creep, Gina M. Schmalzle, Robert Mccaffrey, Kenneth C. Creager Jan 2014

Central Cascadia Subduction Zone Creep, Gina M. Schmalzle, Robert Mccaffrey, Kenneth C. Creager

Geology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Central Cascadia between 43ºN and 46ºN has reduced interseismic uplift observed in geodetic data and coseismic subsidence seen in multiple thrust earthquakes, suggesting elevated persistent fault creep in this section of the subduction zone. We estimate subduction thrust "decade-scale" locking and crustal block rotations from three-component continuous Global Positioning System (GPS) time series from 1997 to 2013, as well as 80 year tide gauge and leveling-derived uplift rates. Geodetic observations indicatecoastal central Oregon is rising at a slower rate than coastal Washington, southern Oregon and northern California. Modeled locking distributions suggest a wide locking transition zone that extends inland undercentral …

To conduct this study a spatial optimization model was developed. The model minimizes all transportation costs associated with the transportation of soybeans. …

Applying Serf Analysis To Rank Procurement Strategies For A North Dakota Green Field Pea Processor, Bryant Sanderson Jan 2014

Applying Serf Analysis To Rank Procurement Strategies For A North Dakota Green Field Pea Processor, Bryant Sanderson

Agribusiness and Applied Economics

There are many crops grown in North Dakota, but only a few have a futures market for prices and are grown readily throughout the country. The specialty crops in North Dakota display many of the same characteristics such as a lack of a futures market, high standards for grain quality, and concentrated production areas. These characteristics create unique procurement risks for specialty crop processors. This project ranks procurement strategies for a green field pea processor located in North Dakota using stochastic efficiency with respect to a function (SERF) analysis. Through SERF analysis, it was found that geographic diversification and forward …

A Multivariate Approach To Forecasting Dairy Imports, Regina Laufmann Jan 2014

A Multivariate Approach To Forecasting Dairy Imports, Regina Laufmann

Agribusiness and Applied Economics

The global economy is becoming more connected with every passing year. Developing countries continue to lift themselves out of poverty and their markets are hungry for the opportunity to trade goods with nations all over the world. This is true in dairy markets, and it is a good time for domestic producers to set their sights on international markets. Domestic companies want to have a tool they can use to determine where the demand is not only strong today but will remain strong in the future. In this paper a model is developed to forecast demand in China, the world’s …

Estimating U.S. Residential Demand For Fuelwood In The Presence Of Selectivity, Ryan Michael Daly Jan 2014

Estimating U.S. Residential Demand For Fuelwood In The Presence Of Selectivity, Ryan Michael Daly

Agribusiness and Applied Economics

Residential energy consumers have options for home heating. With many applications, appliances, and fuel types, fuelwood used for heating faces stiff competition in modern society from other fuels. This study estimates demand for domestic fuelwood. It also examines whether evidence of bias exists from residential homes choosing to use fuelwood. The use of OLS as an estimator will yield biased results if such selectivity exists. Selectivity is addressed with a Heckman (1979) two-step procedure; bias in fuelwood demand estimation using OLS is reduced. Non-wood energy prices and income are major determinants of fuelwood demand. Geographical regions and urbanization confirm results …

Survival Analysis Of Foreclosures By Housing And Neighborhood Characteristics, Resha Shehari Aviena Dias Jan 2014

Survival Analysis Of Foreclosures By Housing And Neighborhood Characteristics, Resha Shehari Aviena Dias

Agribusiness and Applied Economics

Losing a home affects not only the homeowner but the community at large. This thesis examines both housing and neighborhood characteristics to determine which characteristics have an impact on the speed of the sale of a foreclosed property. The findings from the Cox Proportional hazard model show which characteristics buyers value more when buying a foreclosed property. These characteristics can be different from the ones that are used to determine the sales price of a foreclosed property. Both financial institutions and real estate speculators can benefit from knowing which housing characteristics are preferred in a foreclosed property, allowing them to …

Determining The Optimal Commodity And Hedge Ratio For Cross-Hedging Jet Fuel, Peter Alistair Turner Jan 2014

Determining The Optimal Commodity And Hedge Ratio For Cross-Hedging Jet Fuel, Peter Alistair Turner

Agribusiness and Applied Economics

Airlines are exposed to risks in swings in the price of jet fuel. While there are many different options that they can use to hedge this risk, airlines often underutilize them. This study establishes the minimum variance hedge ratio for an airline wishing to hedge with futures, while also establishing the best cross-hedging asset. Airlines hedging with futures would create the most effective hedge by using 3-month maturity contracts of heating oil. 3- Month maturity contracts are slightly more effective as hedging tools than the next month, but beyond the 3-Month veil, increased maturity makes heating oil less effective as …

Switching Options: The Value Of Flexibility Provided By Geographical Diversification, Stephan Wegerle Johansen Jan 2014

Switching Options: The Value Of Flexibility Provided By Geographical Diversification, Stephan Wegerle Johansen

Agribusiness and Applied Economics

The thesis develops a Monte Carlo simulation model with real options to value agricultural-commodity-trading firms' physical assets in relation to their existing networks of physical assets. The option value measured is the flexibility provided by switching options. This value can guide individual trading firms from an asset-light strategy towards more asset-medium/heavy and more profitable strategies. The thesis explores the value drivers for the optionality to switch origin locations. Optimal asset networks position traders to smooth imbalances in the market through spatial arbitrage. Further, the implications for contracting parts of the capacity, as well as how they affect the option value, …

A Historical Analysis Of Natural Gas Demand, Nathan Richard Dalbec Jan 2014

A Historical Analysis Of Natural Gas Demand, Nathan Richard Dalbec

Agribusiness and Applied Economics

This thesis analyzes demand in the US energy market for natural gas, oil, and coal over the period of 1918-2013 and examines their price relationship over the period of 2007-2013. Diagnostic tests for time series were used; Augmented Dickey-Fuller, Kwiatkowski–Phillips–Schmidt–Shin, Johansen cointegration, Granger Causality and weak exogeneity tests. Directed acyclic graphs were used as a complimentary test for endogeneity. Due to the varied results in determining endogeneity, a seemingly unrelated regression model was used which assumes all right hand side variables in the three demand equations were exogenous. A number of factors were significant in determining demand for natural gas …
