Impacts Of Supplemental Arginine On Ewe Reproductive Performance, Alison Ryan Crane
Impacts Of Supplemental Arginine On Ewe Reproductive Performance, Alison Ryan Crane
Animal Sciences
The objective of this study was to determine the effects of injectable and oral arginine (Arg) supplementation provided 14 d post-breeding on reproductive performance of fall lambing ewes. Upon estrus detection (d 0) ewes were randomly assigned to one of six treatments for a 14-d treatment period: injectable saline (CON; n = 25), injectable alanine (IVALA; n = 20), injectable arginine (IVARG; n = 23), oral rumen-protected Arg (RPARG; n = 20), oral soybean meal (SBM; n = 23), or oral fishmeal (FM; n = 24). Weaning rates were higher (P < 0.05) in Arg supplemented ewes. Plasma progesterone and serum Arg concentrations exhibited a treatment and day effect (P < 0.05), but no treatment × day interaction was observed (P > 0.05). In contrast to previous research, supplemental Arg during …
The Use Of Behavioral Measures To Quantify Welfare In Dairy Cows And Lambs, Nichole Marie Chapel
The Use Of Behavioral Measures To Quantify Welfare In Dairy Cows And Lambs, Nichole Marie Chapel
Animal Sciences
The primary objective of the experiments described in this thesis was to use quantitative behavioral measures of livestock to evaluate animal welfare. In one study, the effects of a therapeutic drug in lame dairy cows were evaluated for alleviating pain associated with lameness and hoof trimming. Lameness pain was measured using lying and standing times as well as locomotion scoring. No effect on lameness indicators or milk production was found for hoof trimming or drug administration. In the second study, behaviors associated with maternal nutritional plane during gestation were measured in lambs. Lambs born to nutritionally restricted dams behaved differently …
The Impact Of Management Decisions And Their Effect On Reproductive Performance Of Beef Cattle, Mellissa Renee Schook
The Impact Of Management Decisions And Their Effect On Reproductive Performance Of Beef Cattle, Mellissa Renee Schook
Animal Sciences
Two experiments were conducted to evaluate two management decisions made by beef cattle producers and their impacts on reproduction. In experiment 1, growth, attainment of puberty, and pregnancy rates were evaluated in crossbred heifers originating from two different breeding systems: 1) cows only exposed to natural service herd bulls (NS), or 2) cows exposed to ovulation synchronization and fixed-time AI followed by natural-service bulls (TAI, fixed-time artificial insemination). Artificial insemination did not influence growth rate during the development phase, attainment of puberty, or pregnancy rates in heifer progeny. In experiment 2, pregnancy attainment and calving distribution of beef females administered …
Field And Numerical Investigation Of Wave Power And Shoreline Retreat In Terrebonne Bay, Southern Louisiana, Kyle Ryan Parker
Field And Numerical Investigation Of Wave Power And Shoreline Retreat In Terrebonne Bay, Southern Louisiana, Kyle Ryan Parker
LSU Master's Theses
The marshland in southern Louisiana is a vital resource that many people and wildlife depend on. Terrebonne Bay was chosen for this research because it has experienced one of the largest wetland loss rates among Louisiana estuaries. Investigations of wave power and shoreline retreat rate could provide decision makers with a better understanding of the contributing wave force responsible for local shoreline retreat. A strong relationship has been shown to exist between wave power and shoreline retreat [Schwimmer (2001) and Marani et al. (2011)]. Whether or not this strong relationship exists in Terrebonne Bay is the subject of this research. …
Gender Maneuvering Over Coffee: Doing Gender Through Displays Of Hegemonic Masculinity And Alternative Femininity, Jedidiah Mcclean
Gender Maneuvering Over Coffee: Doing Gender Through Displays Of Hegemonic Masculinity And Alternative Femininity, Jedidiah Mcclean
School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations
This research examines how individuals “do gender” in an urban coffee shop by performing gender maneuvering strategies in order to gain masculine cultural capital typically accessed through displays of hegemonic masculinity. This participant ethnography was conducted in a corporate coffee franchise over the course of eight weeks, to observe gendered interactions in a public space. Observations were made of customer and barista socialization in the store, where gender displays were maneuvered through social artifacts such as clothing and hairstyles; as well as gendered social transactions such as conversational styles and heteronormative social customs. Research findings suggest that both masculine and …

Framing Transportation Planning Pedagogy For Sustainability Generalists, Beth Sweeney, Ann Scheerer, Vicki Elmer
TREC Final Reports
This paper describes a pilot graduate sustainable transportation course developed at the University of Oregon to provide hands-on project experience for students studying sustainability. New approaches to sustainability and transportation pedagogies will provide a galvanizing force for tomorrow’s graduates, who must respond to concerns about climate change and the environment, social equity, and an uncertain economy. They will require an aptitude for both technical skills and collaborative leadership and communication skills. The course was guided by a framework founded in five themes from the literature on sustainability education and transportation planning and engineering education: leading with sustainability’s cornerstones of people, …

With the proliferation of technology usage, it is essential to understand the effect of implementation of technology in the academic setting. Specifically, this article examines the impact of eBooks and mobile devices on student learning. A pilot study was conducted with three areas of interest. The first question of interest found that owning or having access to two or more mobile devices significantly increased respondents’ frequency of accessing eBooks. The second question examined the pros and cons of using mobile devices. Accessibility and cost savings were found as pros; while functionality and pedagogy were reported as drawbacks to mobile device …
Mechanical Reproduction In An Age Of High Art, Chris Barker
Mechanical Reproduction In An Age Of High Art, Chris Barker
Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)
This paper reopens the question of the place of high art in the period identified by Walter Benjamin as the age of mechanical reproduction. Walter Benjamin, Bruno Latour, and Adam Lowe are wrong to think that mechanical reproduction has transformed the concept of art, destroying the aura of art or transmitting that aura from original to copy. The concept of art cannot be redefined by the modern change in the capacity to reproduce art unless art was initially defined primarily by its uniqueness/nonreproducibility. Photographic reproduction has caused major changes in the visual arts and in the way we consume art, …
(Dis)Functions: Marxist Theories Of Architecture And The Avant-Garde, Michael Chapman
(Dis)Functions: Marxist Theories Of Architecture And The Avant-Garde, Michael Chapman
Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)
This paper investigates the relationship between architecture and theories of the avant-garde in the critical projects of the 1970s, with a focus on the theories of Peter Bürger and Manfredo Tafuri. Both Tafuri and Bürger were writing from within the context of a radicalized Marxism and were fueled by an intellectual pessimism towards the totalizing systems of cultural production that questioned the role of resistance in aesthetics and the inability of the historical avant-gardes to engage within the political and economic fields of contemporary society. While there is a common ancestry to these two approaches, and mutual acceptance of the …
Schiller Revisited: "Beauty Is Freedom In Appearance" Aesthetics As A Challenge To The Modern Way Of Thinking, Wolfgang Welsch
Schiller Revisited: "Beauty Is Freedom In Appearance" Aesthetics As A Challenge To The Modern Way Of Thinking, Wolfgang Welsch
Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)
This essay re-evaluates Schiller's idea of beauty as “freedom in appearance,” as brought forward in his Kallias or On Beauty(1793), against the backdrop of early modern and modern thinking that based itself on a fundamental split between nature and freedom, world and man. Schiller's claim that natural beauty results from freedom in nature bridges this gap. His suggestion is confirmed by modern science. Schiller's view is recommended and defended as a way of escaping modern bigotry

The Tower Of Babel: Human Rights And The Paradox Of Language, Moria Paz
The Tower Of Babel: Human Rights And The Paradox Of Language, Moria Paz
Faculty Scholarship
Key human rights instruments and leading scholars argue that minority language rights should be treated as human rights, both because language is constitutive of an individual’s cultural identity and because linguistic pluralism increases diversity. These treaties and academics assign the value of linguistic pluralism in diversity. But, as this article demonstrates, major human rights courts and quasi-judicial institutions are not, in fact, prepared to force states to swallow the dramatic costs entailed by a true diversity-protecting regime. Outside narrow exceptions or a path dependent nationalpolitical compromise, these enforcement bodies continuously allow the state actively to incentivize assimilation into the dominant …
Novel Roles For Actin In Mitochondrial Fission, Anna L. Hatch, Pinar S. Gurel, Henry N. Higgs
Novel Roles For Actin In Mitochondrial Fission, Anna L. Hatch, Pinar S. Gurel, Henry N. Higgs
Dartmouth Scholarship
Mitochondrial dynamics, including fusion, fission and translocation, are crucial to cellular homeostasis, with roles in cellular polarity, stress response and apoptosis. Mitochondrial fission has received particular attention, owing to links with several neurodegenerative diseases. A central player in fission is the cytoplasmic dynamin-related GTPase Drp1, which oligomerizes at the fission site and hydrolyzes GTP to drive membrane ingression. Drp1 recruitment to the outer mitochondrial membrane (OMM) is a key regulatory event, which appears to require a pre-constriction step in which the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and mitochondrion interact extensively, a process termed ERMD (ER-associated mitochondrial division). It is unclear how ER-mitochondrial …

Plant Response To 14 Engineered Log Jams On The North Fork Toutle River, Wa Sediment Plain, Todd Ashley
Plant Response To 14 Engineered Log Jams On The North Fork Toutle River, Wa Sediment Plain, Todd Ashley
Environmental Science and Management Professional Master's Project Reports
I sought to evaluate the vegetative response to the installation of the 14 engineered log jams (ELJs) on the North Fork Toutle River (NFTR) Sediment Plain. The NFTR sediment plain is constantly being reworked due to channel bank erosion caused by a combination of processes including flow erosion and gravitational mass failure. Vegetation has the ability to protect the bank from erosion as well as providing other stabilizing effects. The ELJ structures were designed in part to protect localized areas of the sediment plain and allow vegetated islands to develop. The purpose of these vegetated islands is to trap sand …

A Monte Carlo Study: The Consequences Of The Misspecification Of The Level-1 Error Structure, Merlande Petit-Bois
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Single-case interventions allow for the repeated measurement of a case or participant across multiple time points, to assess the treatment¡͞s effect on one specific case or participant. The basic interrupted time series design includes two phases: baseline and treatment. Raudenbush and Byrk (2002) demonstrated that a meta-analysis of large group designs can be seen as a special case of multi-level analysis with participants (level-one) nested within studies (level-two). Raw data from a set of single case design studies have a similar structure. Van den Noortgate and Onghena (2003) illustrated the use of a two-level model to analyze data in primary …

The edge of the Internet is increasingly becoming wireless. Therefore, monitoring the wireless edge is important to understanding the security and performance aspects of the Internet experience. We have designed and implemented a large-scale WLAN monitoring system, the Distributed Internet Security Testbed (DIST), at Dartmouth College. It is equipped with distributed arrays of “sniffers” that cover 210 diverse campus locations and more than 5,000 users. In this paper, we describe our approach, designs and solutions for addressing the technical challenges that have resulted from efficiency, scalability, security, and management perspectives. We also present extensive evaluation results on a production network, …
Ticket To Salvation: Nichiren Buddhism In Miyazawa Kenji’S Ginga Tetsudō No Yoru, Jon P. Holt
Ticket To Salvation: Nichiren Buddhism In Miyazawa Kenji’S Ginga Tetsudō No Yoru, Jon P. Holt
World Languages and Literatures Faculty Publications and Presentations
Miyazawa Kenji’s Ginga tetsudō no yoru is a children’s story that explores what heaven is like with very visible Christian themes and images, but the logic and vision underneath is more Buddhist than Christian. In Kenji’s prose masterpiece, the author ultimately subsumed Christianity and science into a greater spiritual cosmic vision—Nichiren’s all-encompassing principle of three-thousand-realms-in-a-single-thought (ichinen sanzen). Among the possible interpretations of Ginga tetsudō no yoru, one must consider that it is an expression of the author’s Nichiren Buddhist beliefs, which he long held and explicitly articulated elsewhere in other works and correspondence. Reframing both the scholarship on Kenji’s ties …

Reading L2 Russian: The Challenges Of The Russian-English Dictionary, William J. Comer
World Languages and Literatures Faculty Publications and Presentations
This descriptive study examines when and how students use Russian-English dictionaries while reading informational texts in Russian and what success they have with word lookup. The study uses introspective verbal protocols (i.e., think-alouds) to follow how readers construct meaning from two texts while reading them for a limited time first without a dictionary and then with access to a paper bilingual dictionary. Quantitative and qualitative data about readers’ language and dictionary skills are presented based on the readers’ think-aloud protocols for the dictionary portion of the reading sessions. The data reveal patterns of dictionary usage and problems in finding words …

Functional Verification Of High Performance Adders In Coq, Qian Wang, Xiaoyu Song, Ming Gu, Jiaguang Sun
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Addition arithmetic design plays a crucial role in high performance digital systems. The paper proposes a systematic method to formalize and verify adders in a formal proof assistant COQ. The proposed approach succeeds in formalizing the gate-level implementations and verifying the functional correctness of the most important adders of interest in industry, in a faithful, scalable, and modularized way. The methodology can be extended to other adder architectures as well.

Faculty Publications & Research of the TUC College of Osteopathic Medicine
CASPASE-12 (CASP12) has a downregulatory function during infection and thus may protect against inflammatory disease. We investigated the distribution of CASP12 alleles (#rs497116) in African-Americans (AA) with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). CASP12 alleles were genotyped in 953 RA patients and 342 controls. Statistical analyses comparing genotype groups were performed using Kruskal–Wallis non-parametric ANOVA with Mann–Whitney U tests and chi-square tests. There was no significant difference in the overall distribution of CASP12 genotypes within AA with RA, but CASP12 homozygous patients had lower baseline joint-narrowing scores. CASP12 homozygosity appears to be a subtle protective factor for some aspects of RA in AA …

The Editing And Publishing Of Tim Winton In The United States, Per Henningsgaard
English Faculty Publications and Presentations
Per Henningsgaard presents us with a detailed analysis of 'The editing and publishing of Tim Winton in the United States', and more broadly of the work of cultural translation. Henningsgaard's essay is a fascinating excursion for readers of Winton into the pragmatic details of difference and similarity in national vocabularies and in modes of perception between the purportedly symbiotic North America and Australia. We also gain an appreciation of what the material production of literature entails for authors, editors, publishers and readers globally. We are given the chance to contemplate how ‘the literary’ exists not beyond the marketplace, but certainly …

The Standardized Field Sobriety Test (SFST) is a series of exercises that a law enforcement officer gives to a driver suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol. The original research that demonstrated a high correlation between failure of the SFST and a high blood alcohol concentration did not utilize a standard control group to validate that the failure of the SFST was not a characteristic of the population at large. This study examined a series of drug naive subjects to determine the rate of failure of the SFST to accurately distinguish a suspect with high blood alcohol content from …

Teaching Critical Thinking To First-Year Medical Students Through Concept Mapping, Amina Sadik
College of Osteopathic Medicine (TUN) Publications and Research
Helping students learn the basic sciences and demonstrating their importance in the practice of medicine presents a challenge for the majority of medical science educators. A curriculum change of medical biochemistry was implemented to include concept mapping as a visual strategy to enhance the analytical and critical thinking skills during clinical case-based workshops. A rubric was used to give detailed feedback and provide guidance to students. A number of clinical cases were judiciously selected to illustrate specific topics. Students meet with a faculty member to discuss the concept map prior to the workshop. During such meetings, all members are asked …
Death Delayed Is Retribution Denied, Russell Christopher
Death Delayed Is Retribution Denied, Russell Christopher
Articles, Chapters in Books and Other Contributions to Scholarly Works
Does death row incarceration for upwards of thirty years or more impermissibly impose the suffering of additional punishment or permissibly bestow the benefit of death delayed and thus the enjoyment of life extended? Most commentators conceive of it as an unconstitutional additional punishment that is either cruel and unusual or disproportionally excessive. Most courts construe it as a constitutional nonpunishment that the death row prisoner opts for and benefits from. Sparking a long-running debate at the Supreme Court, Justices Stevens and Breyer view prolonged death row incarceration as unconstitutional additional punishment. Terming their view as “meritless” and “a mockery of …
