Attachment, Well-Being, And College Senior Concerns About The Transition Out Of College, Joel A. Lane Jan 2014

Attachment, Well-Being, And College Senior Concerns About The Transition Out Of College, Joel A. Lane

Counselor Education Faculty Publications and Presentations

This study examined the relationships among attachment, psychological well-being (PWB), life satisfaction, and concerns about the transition out of college among a sample of college seniors. A path analysis was conducted predicting that PWB and life satisfaction would mediate the relationships between attachment and three types of graduation transition concerns: career, change and loss, and support. Significant mediation effects impacting career concerns and change and loss concerns were discovered. Implications for college counseling are discussed. Keywords: attachment, college graduation, transition.

Everything Is Alright: Parental Positive Impression Management In Assessment Of Anxious Youth, Megan Elizabeth Kirkpatrick Jan 2014

Everything Is Alright: Parental Positive Impression Management In Assessment Of Anxious Youth, Megan Elizabeth Kirkpatrick

LSU Master's Theses

Lifetime prevalence rates of anxiety disorders in youth are substantial and range from 6-15%. Valid evidence-based assessments are therefore of critical importance in screening pediatric clients. Assessment of childhood disorders requires multi-informant data (e.g., parents, teachers, child); however, this presents a host of obstacles not found in adult assessment. No single source represents the gold standard and it is therefore up to the judgment of the clinician to integrate often conflicting information. Parents’ reports of their children's symptomology may be marred by their own anxious or depressive symptoms as well as conflict due to differing motivations, values, and goals. This …

A Material World: Using Trademark Law To Override Copyright's First Sale Rule For Imported Copies, Mary Lafrance Jan 2014

A Material World: Using Trademark Law To Override Copyright's First Sale Rule For Imported Copies, Mary Lafrance

Scholarly Works

When the Supreme Court held that the first sale rule of copyright law permits the unauthorized importation and domestic sale of lawfully made copies of copyrighted works, regardless of where those copies were made, copyright owners lost much of their ability to engage in territorial price discrimination. Publishers, film and record producers, and software and videogame makers could no longer use copyright law to prevent the importation and domestic resale of gray market copies, and therefore could no longer protect their domestic distributors against competition from cheaper imported copies.

However, many of these copyright owners can take advantage of a …

Sediment Patterns In Relation To Vegetative Community Shifts At Catahoula Lake, Louisiana, Karen Doerr Latuso Jan 2014

Sediment Patterns In Relation To Vegetative Community Shifts At Catahoula Lake, Louisiana, Karen Doerr Latuso

LSU Master's Theses

The processes that control species composition and structure in wetland ecosystems are complex and controlled by many factors including seasonality, depth and duration of flooding, and nutrient dynamics. Catahoula Lake is a floodplain lake that has existed with seasonally fluctuating water levels for at least 4,000 years. The herbaceous vegetation that attracts these waterfowl is slowly being outcompeted by woody vegetation, most notably water-elm (Planera aquatica). Our general goal is to understand the processes that cause this shift, focusing on the role of sediments. Our first objective was to use historical aerial imagery to detect historical changes in plant communities …

Preliminary Investigation Of The Geometry And Kinematics Of The Bangong-Nujiang Suture At The Basu Metamorphic Massif, Se Tibet, Chase Michael Billeaudeau Jan 2014

Preliminary Investigation Of The Geometry And Kinematics Of The Bangong-Nujiang Suture At The Basu Metamorphic Massif, Se Tibet, Chase Michael Billeaudeau

LSU Master's Theses

There are many uncertainties associated with the development and deformation of the Tibetan Plateau. The Basu Massif, located along the eastern Bangong-Nujiang Suture Zone, is an ideal locality to help provide constraints to resolve the geologic evolution of the Tibetan Plateau. The Basu Massif is characterized by high pressure-ultra high pressure (HP-UHP) metamorphic rocks, syn- and post-collisional granites, and a central Upper Paleozoic unit bounded by discontinuous belts of serpentinite. Field data suggests that the carbonates of the central Upper Paleozoic unit, serpentinites, granites and metasedimentary rocks are part of an isoclinally folded shear zone that may have been thrust …

The Effects Of Modeling Instruction In A High School Physics Classroom, Mark E. Arseneault Jan 2014

The Effects Of Modeling Instruction In A High School Physics Classroom, Mark E. Arseneault

LSU Master's Theses

The purpose of this research was to study my effectiveness as a high school physics teacher using a traditional approach to instruction compared to a Modeling approach. The study was conducted at a high school near Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Both groups consisted of 1 section of honors physics and 1 section of regular physics each. Conceptual understanding and problems solving gains were measured using pre/post Force Concept Inventory (FCI) and the Mechanics Baseline Test (MBT) results, respectively. Students’ level of science reasoning was also measured at the beginning of the school year only, using the Classroom Test of Scientific Reasoning …

Environmental Factors And Progressive Myopia: A Global Health Problem, Jeffrey Weissman Jan 2014

Environmental Factors And Progressive Myopia: A Global Health Problem, Jeffrey Weissman

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences

Myopia, or nearsightedness, is a refractive error whose prevalence has increased over the past three decades, leading to a growing concern and interest among both the public and scientific communities. For years, the only explanation and basis for myopia has been genetic factors. However, the genetic model does not explain the dramatic increase in prevalence. Current research suggests that the increase is also due to environmental factors, such as fewer hours of outdoor activities, early educational pressures requiring intense close work, as well as a lack of exposure to sunlight. One study compared the prevalence and risk factors for myopia …

Stem Cells As A Cure For Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, Chaya K. Hirsch Jan 2014

Stem Cells As A Cure For Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, Chaya K. Hirsch

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal motor neuron disease which affects approximately 30,000 Americans at any given time (alsa.org, 2010). The etiology of this terminal disease unfortunately remains an unsolved mystery and has therefore severely limited the ability to find a cure. The use of stem cells to regenerate neurons has been vastly studied and have produced very promising results. However, its practicality as a cure or treatment for neurodegenerative diseases, such as ALS, is greatly compromised. Three different therapies involving stem cells were examined, Embryonic Stem Cells (ESC), induced pluripotent stem cells, (iPSC) and direct reprogramming of adult …

The Efficacy And Safety Of The Human Papillomavirus Vaccine, Gail Tessler Jan 2014

The Efficacy And Safety Of The Human Papillomavirus Vaccine, Gail Tessler

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences

The HPV virus is said to be the cause of many infections, warts, and cancers. In addition to the fact that the treatment for HPV is not always successful, not every individual knows that s/he is infected and is very likely to infect his or her partner, too. This is one factor that explains why 14 million people each year in America alone contract HPV and makes cervical cancer so threatening to many people worldwide. In light of this and the known dangers of cervical, anal, vaginal and penile cancers, the HPV vaccine was created to prevent an infection of …

Parp Inhibition: A Method Of Treating And Preventing Certain Cancers, Chana Tropper Jan 2014

Parp Inhibition: A Method Of Treating And Preventing Certain Cancers, Chana Tropper

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences

Breast cancer is one of the largest causes of cancer related deaths in women. Less than 5% of breast cancer cases are genetically inherited and most often develop after menopause. The BRCA gene mutation is a genetic inheritance which increases ones chances of developing breast cancer at a young age tenfold. Recent research has proposed a method of treatment in genetically inherited breast cancers by taking advantage of the impaired DNA repair pathway caused by the BRCA mutation. The combination of a BRCA mutation, which leads to deficient double strand DNA repair, and PARP inhibition, which leads to deficient single …

The Search For Novel Inhibitors Of The Mycobacterial Enoyl Reductase Inha, Esther Saul Jan 2014

The Search For Novel Inhibitors Of The Mycobacterial Enoyl Reductase Inha, Esther Saul

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences

Isoniazid (INH), one of two first-line drugs used to treat tuberculosis (TB), has been shown to be a potent inhibitor of InhA, the mycobacterial enoyl reductase. However, the increasing resistance to INH makes it imperative to find alternative drugs that are as effective as the first-line drugs, yet active against INH-resistant strains. Since InhA has been validated as an excellent target of TB, there have been attempts to find novel inhibitors of InhA. Through rational drug design, a variety of high affinity InhA inhibitors were synthesized. Triclosan itself was observed to be a suboptimal inhibitor of InhA with a K …

Comment On “The Effect Of Same-Sex Marriage Laws On Different-Sex Marriage: Evidence From The Netherlands”, Alexis Dinno Jan 2014

Comment On “The Effect Of Same-Sex Marriage Laws On Different-Sex Marriage: Evidence From The Netherlands”, Alexis Dinno

Community Health Faculty Publications and Presentations

In the recent Demography article titled “The Effect of Same-Sex Marriage Laws on Different-Sex Marriage: Evidence From the Netherlands,” Trandafir attempted to answer the question, Are rates of opposite sex marriage affected by legal recognition of same sex marriages? The results of his approach to statistical inference—looking for evidence of a difference in rates of opposite-sex marriage—provide an absence of evidence of such effects. However, the validity of his conclusion of no causal relationship between same-sex marriage laws and rates of opposite-sex marriage is threatened by the fact that Trandafir did not also look for equivalence in rates of opposite-sex …

Open Hearts Or Smoke And Mirrors: Metaphorical Framing And Frame Conflicts In A Public Meeting, L. David Ritchie, Lynne Cameron Jan 2014

Open Hearts Or Smoke And Mirrors: Metaphorical Framing And Frame Conflicts In A Public Meeting, L. David Ritchie, Lynne Cameron

Communication Faculty Publications and Presentations

The concept of framing has been widely used to help understand how aspects of messages can shape people’s expectations and consequently influence the outcomes of communicative interactions. In this study we examine transcripts of a contentious and ultimately unsuccessful public meeting between police officials and members of the African-American community following the fatal shooting of a young African-American woman by police officers. We show how contradictory framing between public officials and members of the community as well as within each group may have contributed to unintended and asymmetrical ironies, and ultimately to the failure of the meeting to achieve the …

Frozen, Old, Or New? : Comparing Biochemical Markers And Tissue Oxygenation In Transfused Blood, Connor Wiles Jan 2014

Frozen, Old, Or New? : Comparing Biochemical Markers And Tissue Oxygenation In Transfused Blood, Connor Wiles

University Honors Theses

The transfusion of red blood cells is a necessary therapy used to treat anemia that often results from traumatic hemorrhage. The traditional method of storing red blood cells prior to transfusion in the United States has been as a liquid in a refrigerated fashion at a temperature between two and eight degrees Celsius. Throughout the storage duration, the red cells undergo a series of structural, functional, and biochemical changes commonly known as the storage lesion. Increased length of storage has been associated with increased rates of infection, as well as higher incidents of mortality. We hypothesized that this prospective, randomized, …

For The Hard Of Hearing: A Catholic Novelist Confronts Modernity, Louis Benjamin Maltese Jan 2014

For The Hard Of Hearing: A Catholic Novelist Confronts Modernity, Louis Benjamin Maltese

University Honors Theses

In the early part of the 20th century German Catholic theologian and cultural critic, Romano Guardini, published The End of Modernity, outlining the conceptual shift of self-identity and cosmology from Antiquity to Modernity. Characterizing modernity as turning upon a false self-identity termed “mass man.” This false image of life furthers the individual person’s fragmentation, and deafens their ability to hear the Catholic voice. Walker Percy’s familiarity with Guardini is most explicit in The Last Gentleman where Percy represents the difficulty of hearing the call of Catholicism. Recently, Paul Elie and Dana Gioia have pointed out the lacking literary presence …

Children Of Alcoholics: How Patterns And Perceptions Of The Past Affect The Future, Lindsey Anne Cochran Jan 2014

Children Of Alcoholics: How Patterns And Perceptions Of The Past Affect The Future, Lindsey Anne Cochran

University Honors Theses

Parental alcoholism and its effects on children has been a problem widely researched for years. This thesis seeks to find the patterns and roles that are established for children living with parental alcoholism and if/why these patterns are maintained into the individual's adulthood. In doing so, parental alcoholism and its effects on children and adult children will be examined through the lenses of symbolic interactionism and family systems theory. Several concepts that affect roles and patterns are discussed, some of the more prominent being: a) symbols, b) circular causality c) feedback loops, and d) roles. Through an in depth theoretical …

Comics And The Complicit Reader: Closure As A Transgressive Technique In Transmetropolitan, Kyle Knox Jan 2014

Comics And The Complicit Reader: Closure As A Transgressive Technique In Transmetropolitan, Kyle Knox

University Honors Theses

In recent years, the critical analysis of comic books has come to be a respected field in popular culture studies. Transmetropolitan, a 60 issue comic book created by writer Warren Ellis and artist Darick Robertson, became a one of the most popular nonsuperhero series throughout its publication by DC Comics in the late 1990's and early 2000's. Since the beginning of the present decade, scholars have paid increased attention to the thematic content of the series, identifying the text as a brutal transgressive satire of Western consumerist culture. This paper examines the formal structure of the work, primarily through …

Youth Engagement And Portland Neighborhood Associations, Kelly Sellers Jan 2014

Youth Engagement And Portland Neighborhood Associations, Kelly Sellers

University Honors Theses

This research addresses the intersection between youth engagement and Portland neighborhood associations, and explores future implications for young people’s civic engagement and participation in decisions that affect their lives. Since much of the literature on public participation does not specifically address young people’s assets or needs, this research provides an exploratory view on youth perceptions of place and neighborhood associations. Through semi-structured interviews, three members of the Multnomah Youth Commission, the official youth policy body for the City of Portland and Multnomah County, shared their insights, regarding current awareness of and future hopes for Portland neighborhood associations. The lack of …

Understanding Women In Prison: A Review Of Gender Specific Needs And Risk Assessments And Their Policy And Research Implications, Elise Barlow Jan 2014

Understanding Women In Prison: A Review Of Gender Specific Needs And Risk Assessments And Their Policy And Research Implications, Elise Barlow

University Honors Theses

In the last 30 years, the number of women in the criminal justice system has risen significantly, yet the criminal justice system still bases much of its policy on empirical research conducted on a majority male subjects. Risk and need assessments, generally used to categorize inmates into varying risk levels to lower recidivism, have been faulted by many feminist scholars for having little pertinence for women. Their lack of gender sensitive factors has left many scholars questioning their validity. Available correctional programs are based on the knowledge collected by those who are supportive of these "gender neutral" assessments. Because of …

International Perspectives On Sustainable Agriculture In Cuba, B. Danielle Smith Jan 2014

International Perspectives On Sustainable Agriculture In Cuba, B. Danielle Smith

University Honors Theses

Since the economic crisis following the collapse of the Soviet Union, Cuba has restructured their agriculture with a greater focus on domestic production of domestically consumed produce, and a dramatic reduction of petroleum products in all aspects of food production. This overhaul has included the broad application of what is termed agroecology – agricultural practices which focus on principles of biodiversity and sustainability – and inter-farm cooperation facilitated by the National Association of Small Farmers (ANAP) and Campesino a Campesino. Academics and journalists from within and abroad have critically examined aspects of the novel reforms developed in the country …

The Secret Life Of The Cross-Cultural Fairy Tale: A Comparative Study Of The Indonesian Folktale "Bawang Merah, Bawang Putih" And Three European Fairy Tales, Sarah Nicole Donaldson Jan 2014

The Secret Life Of The Cross-Cultural Fairy Tale: A Comparative Study Of The Indonesian Folktale "Bawang Merah, Bawang Putih" And Three European Fairy Tales, Sarah Nicole Donaldson

University Honors Theses

Folklore was one of the earliest developed forms of story telling, and fairy tales especially remain influentially pervasive in society today. In this paper, I seek to deconstruct five versions of the Indonesian folktale "Bawang Merah, Bawang Putih," through comparisons with the European fairy tales "One-Eye, Two-Eyes, and Three-Eyes," "The Fairies," and "Mother Holle," using an interdisciplinary approach incorporating psychoanalytic and feminist theories in a close reading of the tales. Through tracking the transfer of money in the tales, I establish that heroines rarely keep their money as young, marriageable girls are considered commodities themselves within the fairy tale world. …

The Woman In White: Problems With Editorial History & Classification Of Genre In Proposing A New Edition, Andréa Franke Jan 2014

The Woman In White: Problems With Editorial History & Classification Of Genre In Proposing A New Edition, Andréa Franke

University Honors Theses

Wilkie Collins’s novel The Woman in White, first published in Charles Dickens’s journal All the Year Round, brings many issues to publishers who wish to create a new edition. As The Woman in White went through three editorial transitions during Collins’s life it is difficult for book publishers to decide whether to create a new eclectic text of the existing three original editions or to use one edition as the copy text. Beyond this, existing editions of this work, including the Barnes & Noble Classics edition and the Oxford World Classics editions, create problems in their paratext as …

"L'Affaire Des Princes": Baroque Architecture And Factional Politics In Regency Paris, 1715-1723, Jordan Hallmark Jan 2014

"L'Affaire Des Princes": Baroque Architecture And Factional Politics In Regency Paris, 1715-1723, Jordan Hallmark

University Honors Theses

It has long been noted by architectural historians that the exuberant stylistic idiom of the Roman Baroque, which spread throughout most of Europe in the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, failed to exert much of an influence on the architecture of early modern France. Scholars have traditionally interpreted this failure as a conscious rejection of the Roman Baroque style on the part of the French monarchy, which, with the rise of royal absolutism during the personal reign of Louis XIV (1661-1715) , adopted the classical style of architecture and design as a formal language with which to assert the absolute …

Mindfulness And Test Performance After Stereotype Activation: A Randomized Experiment, Charles J.Z. Daniel Jan 2014

Mindfulness And Test Performance After Stereotype Activation: A Randomized Experiment, Charles J.Z. Daniel

University Honors Theses

Although stereotype threat – pressure to avoid confirming or being judged based on a stereotype – has been found to affect performance on an array of tasks, few studies have examined ways to alleviate the threat after it has been activated. Previous research has demonstrated several outcomes of mindfulness exercises - increased emotional regulation, increased attentional regulation, change in perspective of self, and greater resources available to devote to learning – which parallel four potential mechanisms for stereotype threat: anxiety and SNS arousal, decreased working memory capacity, mindset, and effort. The present study tested the impact of two interventions - …

Trace Metal Analysis Of Drinking Water At Portland State University, Emma Claire Prichard Jan 2014

Trace Metal Analysis Of Drinking Water At Portland State University, Emma Claire Prichard

University Honors Theses

Clean drinking water is essential for human and environmental health, but pollution of drinking water sources due to lack of resources or investment allows poor drinking water quality to be pervasive even in developed areas. Portland State University, located in Portland, OR, U.S.A., had reports of poor drinking water quality in a major academic building (Cramer Hall). In order to investigate, a trace metals analysis of drinking water was conducted using EPA Method 200.7 Section 8.2: Dissolved Metals, via Inductively Coupled Plasma – Optical Emission Spectrometry (ICP-OES). Concentrations of 10 different metals were determined in 22 building areas. Results show …
