Identification Of Small Molecule Compounds That Regulate Pdgfra Transcription In Oligodendrocyte Progenitor Cells, Jelena Medved Nov 2014

Identification Of Small Molecule Compounds That Regulate Pdgfra Transcription In Oligodendrocyte Progenitor Cells, Jelena Medved

Doctoral Dissertations

Oligodendrocyte progenitor cells (OPCs) are precursor cells that give rise to oligodendrocytes, cells that form myelin, an arrangement of membrane sheaths enwrapping axons, necessary for fast transmission of electrical impulses in the nervous system. OPCs generate oligodendrocytes during development, adulthood and in pathological conditions.

Generation of oligodendrocytes from OPCs is in part regulated by growth factors. The major survival factor and mitogen for OPCs is platelet derived growth factor (PDGF). PDGF and its receptor, PDGF receptor A (PDGFRA), are critical regulators of OPC proliferation and their differentiation. PDGFRA gain-of-function can lead to excessive proliferation and is associated with a number …

Estimation In Step-Stress Accelerated Life Tests For Weibull Distribution With Progressive First-Failure Censoring, M. M. Mohie El-Din, S. E. Abu-Youssef, Nahed S. A. Aly, A. M. Abd El-Raheem Nov 2014

Estimation In Step-Stress Accelerated Life Tests For Weibull Distribution With Progressive First-Failure Censoring, M. M. Mohie El-Din, S. E. Abu-Youssef, Nahed S. A. Aly, A. M. Abd El-Raheem

Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability

Based on progressive first-failure censoring, step-stress partially accelerated life tests are considered when the lifetime of a product follows Weibull distribution. The maximum likelihood estimates (MLEs) are obtained for the distribution parameters and the acceleration factor. In addition, asymptotic variance and covariance matrix of the estimators are given. Furthermore, confidence intervals of the estimators are presented. The optimal stress change time for the step-stress partially accelerated life test is determined by minimizing the asymptotic variance of MLEs of the model parameters and the acceleration factor. Simulation results are carried out to study the precision of the MLEs for the parameters …

Modeling Time To Default On A Personal Loan Portfolio In Presence Of Disproportionate Hazard Rates, Francisco Louzada, Vicente G. Cancho, Mauro R. Oliveira, Bao Yiqi Nov 2014

Modeling Time To Default On A Personal Loan Portfolio In Presence Of Disproportionate Hazard Rates, Francisco Louzada, Vicente G. Cancho, Mauro R. Oliveira, Bao Yiqi

Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability

In this paper we consider a parametric Weibull mixture cure model for modeling time to default on a personal loan portfolio in presence of disproportionate hazard rate. The main contribution of this paper is to evidence that mixture cure models are appropriate for non proportional sceneries, which has not been claimed in recent articles that brings survival analysis approach for credit scoring modeling. A straight comparison with well known proportional hazard mixture cure model presented in Peng and Dear (2000), provides evidence that risk measurements derived from this framework can be greatly affected if required proportional conditions are not satisfied. …

Measuring The Shock-Heating Rate In The Winds Of O Stars Using X-Ray Line Spectra, David H. Cohen, Zequn Li , '16, K. G. Gayley, S. P. Owocki, J. O. Sundqvist, V. Petit, M. A. Leutenegger Nov 2014

Measuring The Shock-Heating Rate In The Winds Of O Stars Using X-Ray Line Spectra, David H. Cohen, Zequn Li , '16, K. G. Gayley, S. P. Owocki, J. O. Sundqvist, V. Petit, M. A. Leutenegger

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Works

We present a new method for using measured X-ray emission line fluxes from O stars to determine the shock-heating rate due to instabilities in their radiation-driven winds. The high densities of these winds means that their embedded shocks quickly cool by local radiative emission, while cooling by expansion should be negligible. Ignoring for simplicity any non-radiative mixing or conductive cooling, the method presented here exploits the idea that the cooling post-shock plasma systematically passes through the temperature characteristic of distinct emission lines in the X-ray spectrum. In this way, the observed flux distribution among these X-ray lines can be used …

Myles, Michael T. Ivy, Terrance Johnson, Kevin L. Schey, Venkataswarup Tiriveedhi

Biology Faculty Research

Background

The pro-inflammatory cytokines, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, and interleukin (IL)-17, have been implicated in the pathogenesis of liver fibrosis. In this study, we investigated the role of TNFα and IL-17 toward induction of profibrotic factor, periostin.

Methods

HepG2 cells were cultured and treated with inflammatory cytokines, TNFα and IL-17. Computational promoter sequence analysis of the periostin promoter was performed to define the putative binding sites for transcription factors. Transcription factors were analyzed by Western blot and Chromatin Immunoprecipitation. Periostin and transcription factor expression analysis was performed by RT-PCR, Western blot, and fluorescence microscopy. Type I collagen expression from fibroblast …

Olfactory Acuity In Chronic Migraine: A Cross-Sectional Study., Alexander C Whiting, Michael J. Marmura, Sarah E Hegarty, Scott W. Keith

Department of Neurology Faculty Papers

OBJECTIVE/BACKGROUND: This study aims to measure olfactory acuity in chronic migraine subjects, at baseline and on migraine days, and compare to age- and sex-matched controls. Olfactory impairment is common in neurological disorders. While smell hypersensitivity has been established with chronic migraine, olfactory acuity has not been well studied.

METHODS: We recruited 50 subjects with chronic migraine from the Jefferson Headache Center and 50 age- and sex-matched controls. Using the University of Pennsylvania Smell Identification Test (UPSIT), a validated test of olfaction, olfactory acuity was measured at baseline and during a migraine for subjects, and compared to controls at baseline and …

Adaptive Systems: History, Techniques, Problems, And Perspectives, William S. Black, Poorya Haghi, Kartik B. Ariyur

School of Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

We survey some of the rich history of control over the past century with a focus on the major milestones in adaptive systems. We review classic methods and examples in adaptive linear systems for both control and observation/identification. The focus is on linear plants to facilitate understanding, but we also provide the tools necessary for many classes of nonlinear systems. We discuss practical issues encountered in making these systems stable and robust with respect to additive and multiplicative uncertainties. We discuss various perspectives on adaptive systems and their role in various fields. Finally, we present some of the ongoing research …

Nomadic Product: Furniture Design For The Modern Urban Nomad, Qiangwei Zhu Nov 2014

Nomadic Product: Furniture Design For The Modern Urban Nomad, Qiangwei Zhu

Theses

The Nomadic Product, a furniture design for the modern urban nomad, explores how a multifunction product can achieve the goal of providing easily transportable and transformable home furnishings.

At present, the nomadic lifestyle has become an emerging trend by a segment of the young population. Urban nomads are a small but diverse segment of society that live and work in urban areas, most of whom choose to rent homes, rather than purchase them, when they move to a new location. They regularly transplant themselves to new cities across the globe following their next career opportunity or educational pursuits. In doing …

Aereo And Copyright's Private-Public Performance Line, Glynn S. Lunney Jr Nov 2014

Aereo And Copyright's Private-Public Performance Line, Glynn S. Lunney Jr

Faculty Scholarship

On January 10, 2014, the Supreme Court granted certiorari in American Broadcasting Cos. v. Aereo, Inc. By doing so, the Court has seized an opportunity to bring some rationality to copyright's line between public and private performances. In this pending case, the respondent, Aereo, uses thousands of tiny antennae to capture television broadcast signals, which then transmit the signals to its subscribers over the Internet. The question presented is whether Aereo "publicly performs" the copyrighted works carried in the television broadcast signals that are captured and retransmitted.
