The Chicago Teachers Strike And Its Public, Amy B. Shuffelton

Education and Culture

This article considers the 2012 Chicago Teachers Strike in light of John Dewey's The Public and Its Problems. It engages Dewey's conceptualization of practical reason to challenge the educational reform movement's commitment to technocratic decision-making.

Improving Stock Assessment Capabilities For The Coral Reef Fishes Of Hawaii And The Pacific Region, Marc Olivier Nadon Nov 2014

Improving Stock Assessment Capabilities For The Coral Reef Fishes Of Hawaii And The Pacific Region, Marc Olivier Nadon

Open Access Dissertations

Stock assessment methods have been proposed for data-poor fisheries that rely mainly on cost-effective abundance-at-size data and some basic demographic knowledge on growth, maturity, and longevity. However, even these simple data requirements are often unmet. Additionally, coral reef fishes are often monitored using disparate fisheries-independent and -dependent survey methodologies that cannot easily be combined into single datasets. The goal of this dissertation was to develop a series of methods that allow for the efficient assessment of the sustainability of the coral reef fisheries of the Hawaiian Archipelago. To achieve this goal, the specific objectives of this dissertation were to: (1) …

Computational Insights Into The Mechanisms And Structures Of Peptide Bond Cleaving Metalloenzymes And Their Synthetic Analogues, Tingting Zhang Nov 2014

Computational Insights Into The Mechanisms And Structures Of Peptide Bond Cleaving Metalloenzymes And Their Synthetic Analogues, Tingting Zhang

Open Access Dissertations

The selective hydrolysis of peptide or amide bond is required in a wide range of biological, biotechnological and industrial applications. There are significant kinetic barriers to these reactions since peptide bonds are extremely stable and possess a half-life for hydrolysis of 350–600 years at room temperature and pH 4–8. Therefore, nature has devised enzymes to rapidly and selectively cleave these bonds under physiological conditions that are known as peptidases. Specifically, metallopeptidases, generate a scaffold capable of binding one or two metal ions to hydrolyze peptide bonds. The studies on metallopeptidases are important to understand the functions of these enzymes and …

A large man in a black bear suit walks onscreen in a YouTube video. He stops in the middle of some guys tossing around two basketballs, makes some awkward 80s dance moves, and then moonwalks off the screen so well even Michael Jackson might have been impressed. More than 100 of my students watch the video in class. Not one of them see him.

Information System Security Commitment: A Study Of External Influences On Senior Management, Kevin Andrew Barton Nov 2014

Information System Security Commitment: A Study Of External Influences On Senior Management, Kevin Andrew Barton

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation investigated how senior management is motivated to commit to information system security (ISS). Research shows senior management participation is critical to successful ISS, but has not explained how senior managers are motivated to participate in ISS. Information systems research shows pressures external to the organization have greater influence on senior managers than internal pressures. However, research has not fully examined how external pressures motivate senior management participation in ISS. This study addressed that gap by examining how external pressures motivate senior management participation in ISS through the lens of neo-institutional theory. The research design was survey research. Data …

Sanders-Brown Center on Aging Faculty Publications

Amyloid beta (Abeta) 1-42 oligomers accumulate in brains of patients with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) and disrupt synaptic plasticity processes that underlie memory formation. Synaptic binding of Abeta oligomers to several putative receptor proteins is reported to inhibit long-term potentiation, affect membrane trafficking and induce reversible spine loss in neurons, leading to impaired cognitive performance and ultimately to anterograde amnesia in the early stages of Alzheimer's disease (AD). We have identified a receptor not previously associated with AD that mediates the binding of Abeta oligomers to neurons, and describe novel therapeutic antagonists of this receptor capable of blocking Abeta toxic …

Top-Down Processes In Simulated Combined Electric-Acoustic Hearing: The Effect Of Context And The Role Of Low-Frequency Cues In The Perception Of Temporally Interrupted Speech, Soo Hee Oh Nov 2014

Top-Down Processes In Simulated Combined Electric-Acoustic Hearing: The Effect Of Context And The Role Of Low-Frequency Cues In The Perception Of Temporally Interrupted Speech, Soo Hee Oh

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In recent years, the number of unilateral cochlear implant (CI) users with functional residual-hearing has increased and bimodal hearing has become more prevalent. According to the multi-source speech perception model, both bottom-up and top-down processes are important components of speech perception in bimodal hearing. Additionally, these two components are thought to interact with each other to different degrees depending on the nature of the speech materials and the quality of the bottom-up cues. Previous studies have documented the benefits of bimodal hearing as compared with a CI alone, but most of them have focused on the importance of bottom-up, low-frequency …

Investigations Of The Physical And Analytical Chemistry Of Iron In Aqueous Solutions, James Patten Nov 2014

Investigations Of The Physical And Analytical Chemistry Of Iron In Aqueous Solutions, James Patten

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Although iron occurs at extremely low concentrations in the world’s oceans, it is essential for all living organisms. It is the limiting nutrient in High Nutrient Low Chlorophyll (HNLC) areas of the ocean, and exerts critically important influences on levels of atmospheric CO2 and the global carbon cycle. Understanding the chemical processes that govern the fluxes and biogeochemistry of oceanic iron requires thorough assessment of the aqueous physical chemistry of iron and analytical techniques capable of measuring iron at sub-nanomolar concentration measurements. This dissertation extends prior work on the physical and analytical chemistry of iron through (a) investigation of …

In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

The Living Earth: A Nineteenth-Century Latter-Day Saint Perspective, J. Michael Hunter Nov 2014

The Living Earth: A Nineteenth-Century Latter-Day Saint Perspective, J. Michael Hunter

Faculty Publications

By studying the worldview of Mormons living in the nineteenth century, we can better understand their interpretation of nature and their relationship to it. For Mormons of that era, the earth was alive and deeply affected by the attitudes and actions of the humans living upon it. Nineteenth-century Latter-day Saints spoke frequently of the earth, its nature, and its relationship to humanity. They referred to the earth in anthropomorphic terms. It was a living orb endowed with intelligence and feelings. The earth’s life paralleled that of the humans who lived on it. So entwined were the lives of the earth …
