Homeopathic Products Have No Place In The Pharmacy, W. Steven Pray Nov 2014

Homeopathic Products Have No Place In The Pharmacy, W. Steven Pray

Faculty Articles & Research

September's column [“Fraud in the pharmacy?”] explored the legal definition of “health fraud.” To date, no homeopathic product has ever been proven safe or effective for any medical condition whatsoever. If medical claims are made for any homeopathic product, such claims fall solidly within the legal definition of health fraud.

Biological, Geological, and Environmental Faculty Publications

Trypanosoma brucei causes human African trypanosomiasis and regularly switches its major surface antigen, VSG, in the bloodstream of its mammalian host to evade the host immune response. VSGs are expressed exclusively from subtelomeric loci, and we have previously shown that telomere proteins TbTIF2 and TbRAP1 play important roles in VSG switching and VSG silencing regulation, respectively. We now discover that the telomere duplex DNA-binding factor, TbTRF, also plays a critical role in VSG switching regulation, as a transient depletion of TbTRF leads to significantly more VSG switching events. We solved the NMR structure of the DNA-binding Myb domain of TbTRF, …

Gender Diversity And Same-Sex Marriage, Ian Farrell, Nancy Leong Nov 2014

Gender Diversity And Same-Sex Marriage, Ian Farrell, Nancy Leong

Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship

Opponents of same-sex marriage have recently adopted a curious new argument. The argument goes something like this. The Supreme Court has held that diversity is a compelling state interest in institutions of higher education. Opposite-sex marriage includes gender diversity, while same-sex marriage does not. Therefore, states may allow same-sex marriage while banning opposite-sex marriage — even if the ban triggers heightened scrutiny under equal protection or due process — because opposite-sex marriage furthers gender diversity, while same-sex marriage does not.

The gender diversity argument against same-sex marriage has made its way into a number of briefs during the recent increase …

We present the optical luminosity function (LF) of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) estimated from a uniform sample of 58 GRBs from observations with the Robotic Optical Transient Search Experiment III (ROTSE-III). Our GRB sample is divided into two sub-samples: detected afterglows (18 GRBs) and those with upper limits (40 GRBs). We derive R-band fluxes for these two sub-samples 100 s after the onset of the burst. The optical LFs at 100 s are fitted by assuming that the co-moving GRB rate traces the star formation rate. While fitting the optical LFs using Monte Carlo simulations, we take into account the …

Observations Of Λ/4 Structure In A Low-Loss Radio-Frequency-Dressed Optical Lattice, Nathan Lundblad, S. Ansari, Y. Guo, E. Moan Nov 2014

Observations Of Λ/4 Structure In A Low-Loss Radio-Frequency-Dressed Optical Lattice, Nathan Lundblad, S. Ansari, Y. Guo, E. Moan

All Faculty Scholarship

We load a Bose-Einstein condensate into a one-dimensional (1D) optical lattice altered through the use of radio-frequency (rf) dressing. The rf resonantly couples the three levels of the Rb87 F=1 manifold and combines with a spin-dependent "bare" optical lattice to result in adiabatic potentials of variable shape, depth, and spatial frequency content. We choose dressing parameters such that the altered lattice is stable over lifetimes exceeding tens of ms at higher depths than in previous work. We observe significant differences between the BEC momentum distributions of the dressed lattice as compared to the bare lattice, and find general agreement with …

Applications Of Hidden Markov Model And Support Vector Machine For State Estimation / Md.Fayeem Aziz, Aziz Md. Fayeem

Student Works (2010-2019)

This thesis introduces applications of support vector machine (SVM) and hidden Markov model (HMM) for signal processing and image processing. The result of the SVM classifier treated as is used as observation to the HMM and the state is estimated by probabilistic argument maximization. The probability of state is calculated by the classification outcome and the previous state. This method is tested on two case studies. The first case study is about controlling an automated wheel chair using electrooculography (EOG) traces in electroencephalograph (EEG). EOG traces originate from eyeball and eyelid movements and they are embedded in EEG signals collected …
