Profiling Headteachers’ Competencies In Primary Schools In Taita-Taveta County, Kenya: Identifying The Gaps, Mwarigha Rachel Wanjallah

Master of Education

Educational institutions, both public and private, demand for improved performance in terms of effective school management. The question to ask is: do the primary school head teachers (HTs) possess the requisite competencies in order to ensure that the most effective and efficient results that will help in gaining and sustaining competitive advantage for their schools are achieved? Therefore, the purpose of this study was to profile HTs competencies in primary schools in Taita-Taveta County in Kenya, in order to identify the gaps in performance in management. A quantitative research design was adopted for the study, with a survey being the …

Using The Lens Of Gender Responsiveness To Investigate School Leadership Efforts To Keep Girls In School: A Case Study Of A Public Primary School In Kinango Sub County In Kwale County, Kenya, Ruth Ndete Mwangi

Master of Education

In spite of the gender policies that Kenyan government has enacted and the NGOs interventions to support girls’ education, high dropout rates still prevail due to: in school, out of school, political and administrative factors that are still problematic. There has been a plethora of research on barriers to girls’ education although there is paucity of research on the school environment’s potential in curbing the premature termination of girls’ formal education. This qualitative case study was investigating the school leadership efforts to keep girls in school which was evaluated against the Gender Responsiveness lens as seen in the facilitation of …

Integration Of Multimedia In The Teaching And Learning Of Physics: How Can It Influence Student Classroom Engagement?, Cockgen Omondi Limonya Dec 2014

Integration Of Multimedia In The Teaching And Learning Of Physics: How Can It Influence Student Classroom Engagement?, Cockgen Omondi Limonya

Master of Education

Considered as a multidimensional construct, student engagement has been the focus of educational research for over a decade. Educational researchers have been interested in student classroom engagement because it is opined as one of the ways through which student academic achievement, which has been cited as poor in physics, can be improved. Unfortunately, physics teachers in Kenya have not been able to engage their learners leading to the poor performance in physics. Studies have shown that multimedia integration in teaching and learning enhances student classroom engagement. The current study therefore aimed to examine the relationship between multimedia integration in the …

Afro-Colombians And The Encroachment Of Paramilitaries On The African Palm Oil Sector, Stacie Hecht Dec 2014

Afro-Colombians And The Encroachment Of Paramilitaries On The African Palm Oil Sector, Stacie Hecht

Anthropology ETDs

The African palm oil industry in Colombia has burgeoned in the last decade, with state-sanctioned promotions and new developmental productions for the expansion of these plantations seeking to provide economic stability for the country. In addition, with the passing of the Free Trade Agreement between the United States and Colombia in 2011, as well as deals with several European countries for the exportation of the product, comes an even greater demand than previously known for the industry. However, the continuation of this endeavor will lead to the devastation of the bio-diverse lands being used for economic gains. Furthermore, palm oil …

The Fluid Dynamics Of Mercury Target Delivery And Exhaust For A Muon Collider Particle Production System, Yan Zhan Dec 2014

The Fluid Dynamics Of Mercury Target Delivery And Exhaust For A Muon Collider Particle Production System, Yan Zhan

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Liquid mercury has been investigated as a potential high-Z target for the production of Muon particles for the Muon Collider project. This thesis investigates the dynamics of mercury flow in a design of the target delivery system, with the objective of determining pipe configurations that yield weak turbulence intensity at the exit of the pipe. Curved circular pipes with various half-bend angles, with/without nozzles in the exit region, and with/without welds on the pipe inner surface are studied. Theoretical analysis is carried out for steady laminar incompressible flow, whereby the terms representing curvature effects are examined. Subsequent simulations of the …

Women's Health And Abortion Culture In China: Policy, Perception And Practice , Naomi Bouchard Dec 2014

Women's Health And Abortion Culture In China: Policy, Perception And Practice , Naomi Bouchard

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Since China’s implementation of the Family Planning Policy in 1973, much research has been dedicated to analyzing the effects of a policy that strictly controls the reproductive lives of a population now comprisedof 1.35 billion people. Analyses focus on the rise of abortions in China, now at an annual rate of at least 13 million, but offer little insight into the perceptions of the population in regard to China’s new abortion culture. This study aims to shed light on current perceptions through a range of in-person, qualitative interviews conducted in Kunming, China. The study is limited to a sample size …

Climate Change, Water Rights, And Water Supply: The Case Of Irrigated Agriculture In Idaho, Wenchao Xu, Scott E. Lowe, Richard M. Adams Dec 2014

Climate Change, Water Rights, And Water Supply: The Case Of Irrigated Agriculture In Idaho, Wenchao Xu, Scott E. Lowe, Richard M. Adams

Economics Faculty Publications and Presentations

We conduct a hedonic analysis to estimate the response of agricultural land use to water supply information under the Prior Appropriation Doctrine by using Idaho as a case study. Our analysis includes long-term climate (weather) trends and water supply conditions as well as seasonal water supply forecasts. A farm-level panel data set, which accounts for the priority effects of water rights and controls for diversified crop mixes and rotation practices, is used. Our results indicate that farmers respond to the long-term surface and ground water conditions as well as to the seasonal water supply variations. Climate change-induced variations in climate …

Quantifying The Basal Conditions Of A Mountain Glacier Using A Targeted Full-Waveform Inversion: Bench Glacier, Alaska, Usa, E. Babcock, J. Bradford Dec 2014

Quantifying The Basal Conditions Of A Mountain Glacier Using A Targeted Full-Waveform Inversion: Bench Glacier, Alaska, Usa, E. Babcock, J. Bradford

Geosciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Glacier dynamics are inextricably linked to the basal conditions of glaciers. Seismic reflection methods can image the glacier bed under certain conditions. However, where a seismically thin layer of material is present at the bed, traditional analyses may fail to fully characterize bed properties. We use a targeted full-waveform inversion algorithm to quantify the basal-layer parameters of a mountain glacier: thickness (d), P-wave velocity (α) and density (ρ). We simultaneously invert for the seismic quality factor (Q) of the bulk glacier ice. The inversion seeks to minimize the difference between the data …

Toward A Patent Exhaustion Regime For Sustainable Development, 32 Berkeley J. Int'l Law. 330 (2014), Benjamin Liu Dec 2014

Toward A Patent Exhaustion Regime For Sustainable Development, 32 Berkeley J. Int'l Law. 330 (2014), Benjamin Liu

UIC Law Open Access Faculty Scholarship

This Article argues that the current exhaustion doctrine, when applied to the refurbishing industry, fails to balance its mandate of promoting technological progress with the broader program of sustainable development and is therefore unsuitable for countries on the modernization path. First, what constitutes an infringing “making” remains underdetermined. Second, the evidentiary hurdle for proving legal refurbishment is too onerous for the low margin and under-resourced refurbishing industry. Finally, the all-or-nothing approach to judging infringement fails to account for the nuanced cost-benefit nexus that exists between patentees, refurbishers, and society at large and discourages private ordering. To recalibrate the balance between …

The Paradoxes Of Poverty: Urban Space And Ideologies Of Intervention In The "Compassionate" City Of San Francisco, Andrea M. Lopez

Anthropology ETDs

This dissertation examines a subset of urban poor women who live at the nexus of poverty and housing instability and who are exposed to multiple forms of violence and intense bodily suffering. I conducted two years of ethnographic research with a cohort of unstably housed women who have long histories of illicit drug use and who cycle between multiple single room occupancy hotels in two San Francisco neighborhoods. In this dissertation, I take as my analytic object the examination of the key institutional sites (what I call the local geography of hypermarginality) and the strategies for intervention deployed by the …

A Comparative Study Of Testing Semantic Web Services, N. Anari, H. Saboohi, G. Ahakian

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

Web Services provide efficient reusability mechanism, thereby reducing the development time and cost. Mostly the source code of web services is unavailable to other developers who use these services. The manual effort spent by them in testing these web services is very large in order to increase the interoperability. Thus, automated testing needs to be developed for testing these Web services. This paper reviews test cases for Web Services using reduction techniques Pair-Wise Testing (PWT) and Orthogonal Array Testing (OAT) and compares the two techniques with general method. The structure of Web Services is specified using UML diagrams. The pre …

Business Strategy, Intensity Of Competition, Strategic Role Of Accountants, Strategic Management Accounting And Firm Performance, T. Ah Lay, R. Jusoh

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

This exploratory study investigates whether usage of strategic management accounting (SMA) techniques and the accountants' participation in strategic decision-making process mediate the relationship between differentiation strategy and firm performance. The contingency model also examines the impact of strategic role of accountant and intensity of competition on the usage of SMA. Past studies suggest that firms tend to adopt SMA techniques to better cope with the pressures of competitive and unpredictable environment. The results of partial least squares appear to support that differentiation strategy is closely associated with the usage of SMA techniques and strategic role of accountant. Intensity of competition …

Microanalysis Of Polymer Chain Diffusion In Heat Seals, Russell Cooper Dec 2014

Microanalysis Of Polymer Chain Diffusion In Heat Seals, Russell Cooper

All Theses

Heat sealing is an integral method for the closure and protection of packaging. Previous work has shown that seal strength is developed by the interdiffusion of polymer chains within heat seals. Heat seals were made between two dissimilar materials. Poly(ethylene-co-acrylic acid) (EAA) was heat sealed to ionomer. Diffusion within the EAA-ionomer heat seals was estimated. The diffusion estimates were then related to resulting seal strength in the EAA-ionomer sealant system. Heated tooling sealing was utilized to make heat seals at 40 psi (275.79 kPa), 0.5 seconds, and a range of temperatures between 180˚F (82.22˚C) and 300˚F (148.89˚C). Scanning electron microscopy …

Promoting Innovation While Preventing Discrimination: Policy Goals For The Scored Society, Frank Pasquale, Danielle Keats Citron Dec 2014

Promoting Innovation While Preventing Discrimination: Policy Goals For The Scored Society, Frank Pasquale, Danielle Keats Citron

Washington Law Review

Professor Zarsky’s response is an erudite and thoughtful analysis of the discrimination concerns raised by our article, The Scored Society. We particularly appreciate his connection of themes in our article with literature on discrimination law. This historical awareness and theoretical sophistication demonstrates the deep continuity between our concerns and those of other legal scholars. Professor Zarsky has led us to realize that there are in fact several normative theories of jurisprudence supporting our critique of the scored society, which complement the social theory and political economy presented in our article. In this response, we clarify our antidiscrimination argument while …

Understanding Discrimination In The Scored Society, Tal Z. Zarsky

Washington Law Review

This Article draws out several antidiscrimination paradigms which on their face pertain to the dynamics discussed in The Scored Society, and big data in general. Such analysis allows for recognizing which discrimination-based concerns are especially acute in the scored society, as well as setting forth initial proposed responses for mitigating them, when possible. The Article proceeds as follows: after a brief Introduction mapping the confines of the debate and summarizing Professor Citron and Pasquale’s contributions, the Article moves to Part I, where it generally addresses the notion of “discrimination” and its relevance to the issue at hand. Part II—the heart …
