“By Goodly River's Uninhabited” Waterways And Plymouth Colony, Jordan Coulobme
“By Goodly River's Uninhabited” Waterways And Plymouth Colony, Jordan Coulobme
Open Access Master's Theses
The colonists of Plymouth were dependent on aquatic environments for the dispersal and acquisition of ideas, goods, and people. This thesis builds on of the work of Donald Worster and Michael Rawson amongst others to examine the importance of water in Plymouth Colony.Ultimately this study utilizes primary documents to argue that the abundance of aquatic environments in the colonies played a crucial role in allowing for the establishment of a permanent colony in New England. The rise of environmental history over the past several decades presents a natural tool for analyzing the experiences of Plymouth's earliest settlers. Between the years …
Development Of An Underwater Flapping Foil Tow-Test System, Samuel L. Rauworth
Development Of An Underwater Flapping Foil Tow-Test System, Samuel L. Rauworth
Open Access Master's Theses
Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) using conventional methods of propulsion cannot operate in a dynamic environment such as the surf zone or around a reef. Bio-inspired propulsion mechanisms can provide the capabilities required to deal with the hazards of these locations. Animals such as birds, fish, and turtles use flapping foils as a means of propulsion and high maneuverability. Robotic flapping foils can be applied similarly to underwater vehicles like the AUV, Finnegan the RoboTurtle from MIT. Finnegan used four flapping foil "turtle fins" each with two degrees of freedom. One of those fins was outfitted to house force sensors which …
The Impact Of Cultural Cringe On Consumer Behavior In China, Yue Hu
The Impact Of Cultural Cringe On Consumer Behavior In China, Yue Hu
Open Access Master's Theses
China’s market with huge demand and limited supply has become attractive to many international companies since 1976. This study examines the impact of cultural cringe on consumer behavior in China by using Nike, an American sports brand, and Li-Ning, a Chinese sports brand as examples. An online questionnaire survey with 36 questions is conducted in a comprehensive college in the People’s Republic of China. Participants are 314 students from different majors. Results show that the increase of cultural cringe leads to the increasing likelihood of buying Nike’s products. Limitations of the study and the direction for future research are also …
Extensible Cyber Challenge Platform Control Application, Jacob A. Fonseca
Extensible Cyber Challenge Platform Control Application, Jacob A. Fonseca
Open Access Master's Theses
Cyber challenges are an exciting way to teach and assess computer security skills and methods. The commonalities in cyber challenges revolve around network traffic simulation, score keeping, and event automation. The Open Cyber Challenge Platform centralizes these tasks into a single piece of software called a game server. Existing challenge platforms use proprietary mechanisms to accomplish these goals motivating a need to find a solution application. This design and implementation of a game server application will operate as the run time software of the Open Cyber Challenge Platform. The testing of our game server's components show that the implementation described …

I. Functionalization Of Crytpohane Cages For Xenon Mri Ii. Vanadium Catalyzed Oxidative Coupling Of Sp3 C – H Bonds To Heteroarenes, Marissa Simone
Open Access Master's Theses
The lack of resolution and selectivity in current imagining techniques such as x-ray, optical, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has excelled the development of new biosensor technologies. Cryptophane A, a molecular cage composed of two cyclotriveratrylene (CTV) units connected by alkoxy bonds, can be turned into biosensors by attaching a target moiety capable of binding to a particular analyte. Cryptophanes can encapsulate xenon making it an attractive biosensor candidate for detection by hyperpolarized xenon-129 (HP-129Xe) MRI. Further detection enhancement is achieved by using a technique called hyperpolarized chemical exchange saturation transfer (HYPER-CEST). One of the key challenges in …

Overwhelmed To Action: Digital Preservation Challenges At The Under-Resourced Institution, Amanda K. Rinehart, Patrice-Andre Prud'homme, Andrew R. Huot
Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library
Digital preservation advocates at small or mid-sized institutions struggle with the expectations of implementing a digital preservation program. Given that they operate with fewer resources than their larger colleagues, implementation can seem overwhelmingly difficult. With digital preservation a pressing issue, how do these libraries begin to tackle the challenge? Advocates at Milner Library have had the advantage of collaborating on the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) National Leadership Grant, Preserving (Digital) Objects With Restricted Resources (POWRR). This case study examines how they have applied the lessons they have learned to go from being overwhelmed to taking action. Along …

Non-Local Model For The Spatial Distribution Of Impact Ionization Events In Avalanche Photodiodes, David A. Ramirez, Majeed M. Hayat, Andrew S. Huntington, George M. Williams
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
We report an extension of the analytical dead space multiplication theory that provides the means to theoretically determine the spatial distribution of electron and hole impact-ionization events in an arbitrarily specified heterojunction multiplication region. The model can be used to understand the role of the dead space in regularizing the locations of impact ionization. It can also be utilized to analyze, design, and optimize new generations of ultra-low noise, multistaged gain avalanche photodiodes based upon judiciously energizing and relaxing carriers to enhance electron impact ionization and suppress hole impact ionization.
Disidentified Masculinities, Jacqueline Hope Freedman
Disidentified Masculinities, Jacqueline Hope Freedman
Scripps Senior Theses
My capstone is a conversation of the Millennial Generation’s views of individual identity and masculinity, with the hopes of deconstructing the socially constructed and exclusive notions of masculinity by defining a generation’s “common sense.”
My piece is inspired by the portraiture of Chad States in Masculinities (2011) as well as Loren Cameron’s work in Body Alchemy: Transsexual Portraits (1996). The theoretical basis of my project relies heavily on Antonio Gramsci’s concept of “common sense” as well as José Esteban Muñoz’s disidentification. Common sense refers to an instinctual, “uncritical and largely unconscious way of perceiving and understanding.” It “is a collective …
Microbial Community Composition Of Marine Biofilms In A Northern Temperate, Lauren Killea
Microbial Community Composition Of Marine Biofilms In A Northern Temperate, Lauren Killea
Open Access Master's Theses
Marine biofilms are microbial aggregates that ubiquitously develop on substrates in seawater. Biofilms are not simple layers of microorganisms adhering to a surface followed by new organisms growing on top, but they instead have a complex developmental process making biofilms dynamic, diverse and functional communities. The negative effects of biofilms on ships, underwater cables and pipelines have spawned research in antifouling approaches; however, little is known about their development in a northern temperate estuary, such as Narragansett Bay. The goal of this study was to investigate the first steps in biofouling in this area by assessing biofilm biomass through chlorophyll, …
The Evaluation Of Doctor Of Physicaltherapy Students’ Confidence And Satisfaction Using Human Patient Simulation, Brooke O'Connell
The Evaluation Of Doctor Of Physicaltherapy Students’ Confidence And Satisfaction Using Human Patient Simulation, Brooke O'Connell
Open Access Master's Theses
Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) curricula are designed to train physical therapy students to treat patients across a range of treatment needs and settings. However, the ability to provide students with hands on experience in a variety of settings can be limited. Acute care setting experience can be particularly challenging to provide students due to availability issues, legal concerns, and limited clinical opportunities. Human patient simulators; however, are not hindered by the same restrictions. Consequently, simulators provide a valuable resource for students to expand their acute care experience. This study was designed to evaluate the confidence and exposure levels of …

Aural (Re)Positioning And The Aesthetics Of Realism In First-Person Shooter Games, Ryan P. Laliberty
Open Access Master's Theses
The following study is concerned with how immersive experiences are constructed in first-person shooter (FPS) video games through the implementation of “realistic” audio. Bringing together the three fields of video game studies, sound studies, and science and technology studies in its theoretical framework, this study approaches FPS games as commodities, marketed for their capabilities towards providing the player with an immersive and realistic experience, and constructed in particular ways, for particular ends. The first part of this study explores the context of FPS game audio development, from the earliest days of video games in the mid-twentieth century, to the current …
Sea Spray Impact On Momentum Exchanges At The Air-Sea Interface During High Wind Conditions, Yackar L. Mauzole
Sea Spray Impact On Momentum Exchanges At The Air-Sea Interface During High Wind Conditions, Yackar L. Mauzole
Open Access Master's Theses
At high wind speeds the drag coefficient, characterizing the momentum transfer at the ocean surface, is known to be lower than extrapolation of the existing bulk parameterizations, which were derived at low to medium wind speeds. We hypothesize that sea spray may be responsible for the reduction of the drag, and investigate its effect through direct numerical simulations (DNS). The Lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) is coupled to a Lagrangian particle tracking approach to model numerically the dispersion of sea spray droplets in air turbulence near the air-sea interface during hurricanes and other strong wind events. Our results suggest that the …

Wedding Dress Purchase Intentions Of Tattooed Brides, Sarah Yang
Open Access Master's Theses
A tattooed bride faces internal and external influences that may affect her choice of dress. She also will face the decision of whether to hide or show her tattoos on her wedding day. A review of literature revealed that the history of tattoos, contemporary tattoos, and history of weddings have been comprehensively researched (Fenske 2007; Koch, Roberts, Armstrong, and Owen 2010; DeMello 2003; Mo 2000; Ehrman 2011). However, the topic [of tattooed brides has not been explored. Discussion threads on several wedding blogs indicate that tattooed brides have faced the issue of whether to hide or show their tattoos and …
Effect Of Hospitalization On The Integrity Of The Medication Regimen In Patients With Diabetes Mellitus, Matthew J. Alcusky
Effect Of Hospitalization On The Integrity Of The Medication Regimen In Patients With Diabetes Mellitus, Matthew J. Alcusky
Open Access Master's Theses
Medication errors are common within the United States health system. Preventable medication errors are often the result of ineffective processes that contribute to the occurrence of adverse drug events. Care transitions, movement between settings or levels of care, present a particularly vulnerable time for patients. Errors are frequently introduced into a patient's medication regimen during transitions of care, including the inappropriate discontinuation or duplication of medications. Inappropriate discontinuation (non-persistence) of evidence based therapies for chronic diseases places patients at an increased risk for adverse health outcomes. Previous investigations have indicated that care transitions due to hospitalization have been associated with …
Seattle Public Schools Educators' Perceptions Of The Efficacy Of Autism Inclusion Programs, Roslyn Clare Hower
Seattle Public Schools Educators' Perceptions Of The Efficacy Of Autism Inclusion Programs, Roslyn Clare Hower
Scripps Senior Theses
The number of children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) is on the rise, both in the United States and around the world. The Individuals with Disabilities ACT (IDEA 2004) and No Child Left Behind Act (2001) mandate that children with disabilities, including children with ASD, be educated in the Least Restrictive Environment (LRE). The general education classroom is increasingly identified as the LRE. General education teachers are increasingly responsible for educating students with ASD, often with little or no training on ASD or intervention methods. Few previous studies have explored general education teachers’ experiences and attitude towards inclusion of …

Feminist Stereotypes: Communal Vs. Agentic, Emily R. Lindburg
Feminist Stereotypes: Communal Vs. Agentic, Emily R. Lindburg
Scripps Senior Theses
This study examined relationships between facial appearance, gender-linked traits, and feminist stereotypes. Naïve college students rated traits based on facial appearance of female CEO's whose companies appeared in the Forbes 1000 list. The photos of each female CEO (n=35) were randomly combined with two descriptive identifiers; an occupation (n=9) and an interest area (n=9), including 'feminist'. Participants then rated the head shots of the CEO's on a 7 point Likert scale of communal (expected feminine) traits like attractiveness, warmth, compassion and cooperativeness, and on agentic (expected masculine) traits like ambition, leadership ability and intelligence. If college students hold negative stereotypes …
Fishermen’S Perceptions Of Fisherman-Scientist Relations In Maine, Mary Hudson
Fishermen’S Perceptions Of Fisherman-Scientist Relations In Maine, Mary Hudson
Open Access Master's Theses
Improving relations between fishermen and scientists is becoming increasingly important as fisheries scientists and managers work towards incorporating fishermen in research efforts and management decisions. The history of fishermen’s resentment towards scientists and scientific institutions, particularly in New England, illustrates significant obstacles towards such efforts. Understanding the dynamics of fisherman-scientist relations, then, is imperative to furthering the success of participatory efforts. However, little research has been conducted to better understand the quality of fisherman-scientist relationships, and the factors that affect them.
The purpose of this study is to explore the quality of fisherman-scientist relations from the perspective of commercial fishermen …

Madrid Me Mata: Regional Identity Politics And Community Building Through The Music Of La Movida Madrileña, Winona A. Bechte
Scripps Senior Theses
Chapter 1: Formation and Early Beginnings of music in la Movida
-In the first chapter I am writing about how the early development of la Movida runs very much alongside political initiatives to stimulate cultural development in Madrid. Specifically I am writing about how popular songs and musicians at the time translated these messages of regional pride and identity that was being heavily stimulated by the government into a way that the general public could understand and support. Citing specific song lyrics and early bands of la Movida, I also track the years leading up to 1975 and how music …

It has been widely known that the stock market is always volatile and full of risk. How to better capture the volatility and decrease risk accordingly has become a main concern for both investors and researchers. In this thesis, the stochastic volatility model with offset mixture of normal distribution is fitted for financial dataset NASDAQ:LLTC daily stock market returns volatility and one-step-ahead prediction is made based on the AR(1) SV model. Bayesian analysis is fully applied for model fitting and parameter estimation. The Markov Chain Monte Carlo algorithm, using the Metropolis Hasting method, the Forward Filtering Backward Sampling and the …
Performance Analysis Of An Underwater Wire Flying Profiling Vehicle, Luke Andrew Logan
Performance Analysis Of An Underwater Wire Flying Profiling Vehicle, Luke Andrew Logan
Open Access Master's Theses
Profiling the water column from a moving vessel places significant limitations on the achievable spatial resolution of the data collected. Current solutions such as underway CTDs and undulating towed bodies are limited by vessel speed and operational water depths. With an increased focus on submesoscale processes (e.g., stirring, mixing, regulation of thermocline structure, chemical distributions along isopycnals and resolution of hydrothermal plumes), there is a growing need to collect profiles with high vertical and horizontal resolution. A new autonomous profiling vehicle has been developed to address this need. The autonomous wire flying profiling vehicle slides up and down a towed …

Data Collection And Telemetry System Design For Marine Instrumentation: The Son-O-Mermaid, Donaldo Guevara
Open Access Master's Theses
This Thesis presents a prototype design for Sonobuoy Mobile Earthquake Recorder in Marine Areas by Independent Divers (Son-O-MERMAID), a floating instrument that acts as a freely drifting seismometer that captures acoustic signals caused by distant seismic activity. A first version of Son-O-MERMAID was built and deployed in October of 2012, but due to Hurricane Sandy the device was destroyed and data lost. A major limitation of this device was the fact that acoustic data was collected and stored in a submerged computer at a depth of 2,000 feet and data was only accessible once the device was pulled out of …
Emulsion-Templated Silicon/Carbon Anodes With Reduced Graphene Oxide, Patrick Stellfeld
Emulsion-Templated Silicon/Carbon Anodes With Reduced Graphene Oxide, Patrick Stellfeld
Open Access Master's Theses
Silicon is an attractive material for anodes in energy storage devices[1], [2], because it has ten times the theoretical capacity of its state-of-the-art carbonaceous counterpart. Silicon anodes can be used both in traditional lithium-ion batteries and in more recent Li–O2 and Li–S batteries as a replacement for the dendrite-forming lithium metal anodes. The main challenges associated with silicon anodes are structural degradation and instability of the solid-electrolyte interphase caused by the large volume change (∼300%) during cycling, the occurrence of side reactions with the electrolyte, and the low volumetric capacity when the material size is reduced to a nanometre …
The Plots Of Alexanderplatz: A Study Of The Space That Shaped Weimar Berlin, Carrie Grace Latimer
The Plots Of Alexanderplatz: A Study Of The Space That Shaped Weimar Berlin, Carrie Grace Latimer
Scripps Senior Theses
This paper explores Alexanderplatz during the Weimar Period in Berlin. It is looked at from three different perspectives: historical urban plans, Alfred Döblin's novel Berlin Alexanderplatz, and Rainer Werner Fassbinder's 1980's film adaptation of Berlin Alexanderplatz. Through these three mediums, an argument forms that Alexanderplatz functioned as both a major transit space for movement of transportation and pedestrians, but also the transit space for the movement of ideas and information.
Lightweight Data Compression In Wireless Sensor Networks Using Huffman Coding, Henry P. Medeiros, Marcos C. Maciel, Richard D. Souza, Marcelo E. Pellenz
Lightweight Data Compression In Wireless Sensor Networks Using Huffman Coding, Henry P. Medeiros, Marcos C. Maciel, Richard D. Souza, Marcelo E. Pellenz
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
This paper presents a lightweight data compression method for wireless sensor networks monitoring environmental parameters with low resolution sensors. Instead of attempting to devise novel ad hoc algorithms, we show that, given general knowledge of the parameters that must be monitored, it is possible to efficiently employ conventional Huffman coding to represent the same parameter when measured at different locations and time periods. When the data collected by the sensor nodes consists of integer measurements, the Huffman dictionary computed using statistics inferred from public datasets often approaches the entropy of the data. Results using temperature and relative humidity measurements show …

Tools Of The Trade: 'Breaking The Ice' With Virtual Tools In Online Learning, Naomi Mcgrath, Sue Gregory, Helen Farley, Pauline K. Roberts
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
The reality is that online learning can be a daunting and lonely experience. This is why icebreakers can be a rewarding practice for both students and educators. The use of icebreakers allows students studying online to introduce themselves and become familiar with other members of the group and/or community. Not only are these icebreakers used as a starter within the first weeks of study, but they are also used to help motivate students throughout the course. Highlighted in this paper are particular online (virtual) tools that can be used as icebreakers within an online learning environment and help shift the …
