Cmos-Compatible 2-Bit Optical Spectral Quantization Scheme Using A Silicon-Nanocrystal-Based Horizontal Slot Waveguide, Zhe Khang, Jinhui Yuan, Gerald Farrell, Chongxiu Yu, Feng Li, Hwa Yaw Tam, P. K.A. Wai

Articles

All-optical analog-to-digital converters based on the third-order nonlinear effects in silicon waveguide are a promising candidate to overcome the limitation of electronic devices and are suitable for photonic integration. In this paper, a 2-bit optical spectral quantization scheme for on-chip all-optical analog-to-digital conversion is proposed. The proposed scheme is realized by filtering the broadened and split spectrum induced by the self-phase modulation effect in a silicon horizontal slot waveguide filled with silicon-nanocrystal. Nonlinear coefficient as high as 8708 W21 /m is obtained because of the tight mode confinement of the horizontal slot waveguide and the high nonlinear refractive index of …

Articles

In recent years members of the tripartite motif-containing (TRIM) family of E3 ubiquitin ligases have been shown to both positively and negatively regulate viral defence and as such are emerging as compelling targets for modulating the anti-viral immune response. In this study we identify TRIM68, a close homologue of TRIM21, as a novel regulator of Toll-like receptor (TLR)- and RIG-I-like receptor (RLR)-driven type I IFN production. Proteomic analysis of TRIM68-containing complexes identified TRK-fused gene (TFG) as a potential TRIM68 target. Overexpression of TRIM68 and TFG confirmed their ability to associate, with TLR3 stimulation appearing to enhance the interaction. TFG is …

Globalization, Culture, And Online Distance Learning, Charlotte Nirmalani Gunawardena Jan 2014

Globalization, Culture, And Online Distance Learning, Charlotte Nirmalani Gunawardena

University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

Globalization, the Internet, and access to telecommunication networks have increased the demand for education and educational quality across the globe. The reasons for this demand explains Carnoy (2005) are two-fold: The first is economic, the rising payoffs to higher education in a global, science-based, knowledge intensive economy make university training more of a “necessity” to get “good” jobs, which in turn, changes the stakes at lower levels of schooling and the demand for high-quality secondary schools. The second reason is socio-political: Demographics and democratic ideals increase pressure on universities to provide access to groups that traditionally have not attended university. …

Help Wanted: American Drone Program Needs Multifaceted Support To Be Effective, S. Hall Jan 2014

Help Wanted: American Drone Program Needs Multifaceted Support To Be Effective, S. Hall

Journal of Strategic Security

The U.S. drone program in Pakistan faces strong resistance in Pakistan. Because the program solely seeks to eliminate terrorist groups and leaders through bombing campaigns, with no built in social support, the local population’s anti-American sentiment has reached the highest level in history. This angry mood against U.S. drone programs is spreading throughout the Islamic world. To counter this anti-American sentiment, and increase the drone program’s effectiveness, the U.S. must invest in multifaceted, socio-economic support efforts to educate the population and rebuild the gratuity, trust, and commitment of Pakistan’s people to the “War on Terror.”

The Strategy Of Drone Warfare, Mike Fowler Jan 2014

The Strategy Of Drone Warfare, Mike Fowler

Journal of Strategic Security

There is a budding controversy with the combat use of Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPA). Also known as Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV), there is a growing literature critiquing the use of RPAs, often using the pejorative term “drone.” RPAs seem to get the blame for a variety of complaints about policy and employment that have little to do with the airframe or its processes. While all of the military functions of an RPA can and are done by manned aircraft, the RPAs must endure additional scrutiny. The decision to employ RPAs requires additional considerations at both the strategic and operational levels …

Lost In Debate: The Safety Of Domestic Unmanned Aircraft Systems, Yeonmin Cho Jan 2014

Lost In Debate: The Safety Of Domestic Unmanned Aircraft Systems, Yeonmin Cho

Journal of Strategic Security

The United States is poised to integrate commercial unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) into the national airspace and enable government entities to use UAS in a more expedient manner. This policy change, mandated by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Modernization and Reform Act of 2012, offers new economic, social and scientific opportunities as well as enhanced law enforcement capacity. However, such benefits will be accompanied by concerns over misuse and abuse of the new technologies by criminals and terrorists. Privacy has been the focus of public debate over the more widespread use of UAS. This paper examines a variety of issues …

The “Surgical” Legitimacy Of Drone Strikes? Issues Of Sovereignty And Human Rights In The Use Of Unmanned Aerial Systems In Pakistan, Alcides Eduardo Dos Reis Peron Jan 2014

The “Surgical” Legitimacy Of Drone Strikes? Issues Of Sovereignty And Human Rights In The Use Of Unmanned Aerial Systems In Pakistan, Alcides Eduardo Dos Reis Peron

Journal of Strategic Security

The Revolution in Military Affairs had an important role in providing the United States Armed Forces the technical instruments necessary to conduct high-risky operations in the context of Irregular Warfare. The development of these instruments, such as Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV), allowed the emergence of a discourse of surgical and lean wars by the George W. Bush and Barack Obama administrations, whose legitimacy of the interventions were related to the accuracy and technical superiority of the UAVs. Focusing in the case of the U.S. drone strikes in Pakistan, this article seeks to debate the legal limits of the employment of …

Pandora’S Presumption: Drones And The Problematic Ethics Of Techno-War, Matthew Crosston Jan 2014

Pandora’S Presumption: Drones And The Problematic Ethics Of Techno-War, Matthew Crosston

Journal of Strategic Security

Present American policy proclaims the compatibility of drone usage with the traditional Rules of Engagement and the Laws of War. Largely absent in this is an examination of how enemy combatants are being defined on both sides of drone activity: not just the targets and operators but also the relevance of drone technology proliferation. This work engages the void to reveal inconsistent and contradictory ethical standards in American drone policy, based largely on an assumed continued technical preeminence that is by no means guaranteed. The argument is not a humanitarian lament against hegemony: it is a realist argument addressing how …

Economic Valuation Of The Mortality Benefits Of A Regulation On So2 In 20 European Cities, Olivier Chanel, Susann Henschel, Patrick J. Goodman, Antonis Analitis, Richard W. Atkinson, Alain Le Tertre, Ariana Zeka, Sylivia Medina

Articles

Background: Since the 1970s, legislation has led to progress in tackling several air pollutants. We quantify the annual monetary benefits resulting from reductions in mortality from the year 2000 onwards following the implementation of three European Commission regulations to reduce the sulphur content in liquid fuels for vehicles. Methods: We first compute premature deaths attributable to these implementations for 20 European cities in the Aphekom project by using a two-stage health impact assessment method. We then justify our choice to only consider mortality effects as short-term effects. We rely on European studies when selecting the central value of …

Modelling Of Biomass Gasification Integrated With A Solid Oxide Fuel Cell System, Wayne Doherty Jan 2014

Modelling Of Biomass Gasification Integrated With A Solid Oxide Fuel Cell System, Wayne Doherty

Doctoral

Biomass is of major interest as a renewable energy source in the context of climate change and energy security. Traditional biomass conversion technologies achieve low electrical efficiencies. Biomass gasification (BG) coupled with fuel cells offer higher efficiencies. Gasification is a process in which a carbonaceous fuel is converted to a combustible gas. It occurs when a controlled amount of oxidant is reacted at high temperatures with available carbon in a fuel within a gasifier. Two technologies (circulating fluidised bed air gasification and dual fluidised bed steam gasification) were modelled. Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) are well suited to integration with …
