Feuds Of A Thousand Years: Explaining Europe Via The World System, Hans Hubbard Jan 2014

Feuds Of A Thousand Years: Explaining Europe Via The World System, Hans Hubbard

Claremont-UC Undergraduate Research Conference on the European Union

This paper argues for a more comprehensive study of the European Union that includes consideration, not only of socio-economic and political processes, but also of changing conceptualisations of identity, governance and democratic legitimacy. It argues for a re-examination of traditional narratives that frame the European Union as a response to the cruelties of the Second World War. Several key paradoxes in European history cannot be satisfactorily accounted for through purely intra-European processes: the European idea’s pre-dating the Second World War; the lack of a strong impulse for unified defence; the UK’s late membership and euroscepticism; the desire for a closed-off …

Virtually Dead: The Extension Of Social Agency To Corpses And The Dead On Facebook, Adam Tucker Jan 2014

Virtually Dead: The Extension Of Social Agency To Corpses And The Dead On Facebook, Adam Tucker

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

Facebook and other social networking technologies are become vastly powerful and expansive social forces that are exerting an influence on corpses, the dead, and death communications. Since its invention in 2004, millions of users of Facebook have died, leaving durable profiles subject to the site’s changing regulatory policies and socially present for the network’s living users as well. Because of their ability to enmesh, mutate, and interact with the social interactions of the living—as well as their durability as a site of continuing bonds—Facebook profiles retain social agency consistent with the theories of agency of Alfred Gell (1998) and Bruno …

Disconnected/Connected: On The ‘Look’ And The ‘Gaze’ Of Cell Phones, Ian Reyes, Nikhilesh Dholakia, Jennnifer Bonoff Jan 2014

Disconnected/Connected: On The ‘Look’ And The ‘Gaze’ Of Cell Phones, Ian Reyes, Nikhilesh Dholakia, Jennnifer Bonoff

Communication Studies Faculty Publications

Informed by nonparticipant observations of public cell phone use, we offer a Lacanian theorization of common social scenes involving mobile communication technologies. Identifying paradoxes of the mobile mediascape, such as connected versus disconnected and public versus private, we turn to Lacan’s distinction between the look and the gaze to read and reconcile these tensions. Moving beyond understanding cell phones as fetish objects, we use Lacan’s theory of the gaze as a means to understand the existential dilemma, a lack of being, which underwrites the pleasures of consumption. At the heart of the matter is how cell phones mobilize users’ desires …

Fashion Or Proof? A Challenge For Pacific Anthropology, A. Keith Thompson Jan 2014

Fashion Or Proof? A Challenge For Pacific Anthropology, A. Keith Thompson

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

This article is a call to Pacific anthropologists to write the story of the origin of mankind in the Pacific a bit larger and perhaps to look scientifically for additional explanations. Is it possible that the early diffusionists may have gotten some things right, albeit for the wrong reasons?

The Book With The Unintentionally Self-Referential Title, Brant A. Gardner Jan 2014

The Book With The Unintentionally Self-Referential Title, Brant A. Gardner

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

Earl M. Wunderli has written a book that works through the reasons he fell out of belief in the Book of Mormon. These are combined with issues that he has added to his original reasons. His presentation is clearly intended to suggest that what he found compelling will also be compelling to other readers. Should it? This review looks at how his arguments are constructed: his methodology, the logic of the analysis, and the way he uses his sources. Although he argues that it is the Book of Mormon that is the imperfect book, his construction of the arguments makes …

Is Decrypting The Genetic Legacy Of America’S Indigenous Populations Key To The Historicity Of The Book Of Mormon?, Ugo A. Perego, Jayne E. Ekins Jan 2014

Is Decrypting The Genetic Legacy Of America’S Indigenous Populations Key To The Historicity Of The Book Of Mormon?, Ugo A. Perego, Jayne E. Ekins

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

The Book of Mormon claims to be an ancient record containing a summary of a now-disappeared civilization that once lived in the American continent but originated in the Middle East. DNA studies focusing on the ancient migration of world populations support a North-East Asian origin of modern Native American populations arriving through the now-submerged land bridge that once connected Siberia to Alaska during the last Ice Age, approximately 15,000 years ago. The apparent discrepancy between the Book of Mormon narrative and the published genetic data must be addressed in lieu of generally accepted population genetic principles that are efficient in …

Axes Mundi: Ritual Complexes In Mesoamerica And The Book Of Mormon, Mark Alan Wright Jan 2014

Axes Mundi: Ritual Complexes In Mesoamerica And The Book Of Mormon, Mark Alan Wright

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

Places are made sacred through manifestations of the divine or ritual activity. The occurrence of a theophany or hierophany or the performance of particular rituals can conceptually transform a place into an axis mundi, or the center of the world. A variety of such axes mundi are known from the archaeological record of Mesoamerica and the text of the Book of Mormon. I compare and contrast several distinctive types of such ritual complexes from Mesoamerica and the Book of Mormon and argue that they served functionally and ideologically similar purposes.

People Of The Apokalis’: Spatial Disability And The Bhopal Disaster, Jina B. Kim Jan 2014

People Of The Apokalis’: Spatial Disability And The Bhopal Disaster, Jina B. Kim

English Language and Literature: Faculty Publications

This paper considers Indra Sinha's Animal's People (2007), a fictional re-telling of the Union Carbide Bhopal disaster, as a productive site of mutual engagement between postcolonial studies and disability studies, two fields rarely in dialogue. Dominant models of disability, I argue, do not translate to formerly colonial sites and/or sites that bear the burden of global capitalism. The uneven processes of globalization—which produce disabling environments—necessitate that we revise established conceptions of disability, which are derived largely from US/UK contexts. I explore a socio-spatial model that emphasizes the necessity of specific locational axes in figurations of disability. This enables more flexible …

Observers, Community And Legal Members On Rebs: Examining The Ethics Of The Regulators Of Ethical Conduct In Research Involving Humans, Igor Gontcharov Jan 2014

Observers, Community And Legal Members On Rebs: Examining The Ethics Of The Regulators Of Ethical Conduct In Research Involving Humans, Igor Gontcharov

Osgoode Legal Studies Research Paper Series

This paper discusses the challenges of non-scientific members of Research Ethics Boards (REBs) – observers, community, and legal members – in establishing ethics review as an institution that seeks to go beyond peer review in research involving humans. By focusing on the processes of fragmentation and specialization in REB membership, it contributes to an understanding of the ethics of the regulators of ethical conduct in research involving humans. Since the study of REBs poses a number of ethical and research challenges, the paper also discusses participant observation as a methodology for examining the governance of knowledge production in research involving …

Whose Food?: A Multi-Sited Ethnographic Analysis Of Sarasota Farmers Markets, Charles Gillig Jan 2014

Whose Food?: A Multi-Sited Ethnographic Analysis Of Sarasota Farmers Markets, Charles Gillig

Theses & ETDs

As food markets have grown increasingly globalized and entrenched within the neoliberal, capitalist system of the 21st century, the production, sale and consumption of locally grown food has presented itself as a viable alternative to what many view as the depravity of modern industrial agriculture. Farmers markets traditionally represent the intersection of the local agricultural system with consumers interested in supporting various aspects of locally grown food, though this classical vision is not always the norm today. Through participant observation and interviews with managers, organizers, farmers, non-farmer vendors, and customers, this thesis analyzes two farmers markets of differing size and …

Gazing Upon The Goo-Goo Land: Constructions Of The Filipino Identity In U.S. Newspapers, 1898–1904, Shane Donglasan Jan 2014

Gazing Upon The Goo-Goo Land: Constructions Of The Filipino Identity In U.S. Newspapers, 1898–1904, Shane Donglasan

Theses & ETDs

This thesis examines the relationship between print culture and American imperial endeavors in the Philippines. Specifically, it investigates articles in daily newspapers – the saliency of the American newspaper created a way for the public to encounter the Filipino native through representations formed by colonial actors and observers. The thesis’ individual chapters explore three distinct contexts in which discourses of an emerging imperial-racial framework were translated into the narratives of reportage. The degree to which the medium of the newspaper can replicate ideas, sounds and images created a shared experience and produced widespread stereotypes. Ultimately, these accounts surveyed shaped American …

Public Archaeology On Private Property: A Heritage Study Of The Ponce De Leon’S Fountain Of Youth Archaeological Park In St. Augustine, Florida, Arielle Bernhardt Jan 2014

Public Archaeology On Private Property: A Heritage Study Of The Ponce De Leon’S Fountain Of Youth Archaeological Park In St. Augustine, Florida, Arielle Bernhardt

Theses & ETDs

As the 450th commemoration of the establishment of St. Augustine, Florida approaches, the theme park located on the site of the original Spanish encampment prepares for the celebration. The Ponce de Leon Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park attempts to present local historical events in an entertaining manner. Historically, the park has emphasized a false connection with Juan Ponce de Leon and the Fountain of Youth myth, primarily as a method of attracting more paying visitors. However, in recent decades, active involvement with the St. Augustine Archaeological Society and archaeologists from the Florida Museum of Natural History have resulted in a …

Performance Dialogues: Conversations In Poetry And Dance, Rebekah Moriah Bray Jan 2014

Performance Dialogues: Conversations In Poetry And Dance, Rebekah Moriah Bray

Theses & ETDs

This thesis was concerned with the problem of identifying a relationship between poetry and dance as performance arts. The first chapter explored historical developments among the arts of poetry, music, and dance to suggest that these areas, though distinct, are also harmonious. The second chapter of this thesis was an exercise in interdisciplinary experimentation through the conception and production of a poetry and dance performance. The final chapter of this thesis argues for the recognition of poetry and dance as languages in dialogue with their audiences. Through the process of researching and writing this thesis I discovered evidence to support …

“No Outside Of Nature”: Investigations Toward An Ecopoetics, Kyla Stevens Jan 2014

“No Outside Of Nature”: Investigations Toward An Ecopoetics, Kyla Stevens

Theses & ETDs

Belonging to no single school or camp, ecopoetics is expansive in its reach, the discipline composing a theoretical diversity that has resulted in a process of engagement with the natural world. It is a sense of between that seems to be the essential tone of ecopoetics; the edges between disciplines, between ecology and poetry, the boundaries between ecosystems and habitats—areas of tension where the edge of science and art, of poetic innovation and ecological thinking, meet. Central to ecopoetics’ address of the between is an intense awareness of location, a writing practice that enables consideration of emplacement, of ‘being located.’ …

Herding Cats, Bounding Spirit Spiritualism, Public Ritual And Spectral Science In Cassadaga, Florida, Dylan Robitaille Jan 2014

Herding Cats, Bounding Spirit Spiritualism, Public Ritual And Spectral Science In Cassadaga, Florida, Dylan Robitaille

Theses & ETDs

This ethnography is the culmination of fieldwork conducted at Cassadaga Spiritualist Camp in Volusia County, FL - a historic intentional religious community centered around mediumship services, Spiritualism, and tourism. Alongside informal interviews, this project follows the experience of the ethnographer in attending religious services, tours, and classes. The camp is explored as shifting, polyvocal and heterogeneous - reflecting Spiritualism’s emphasis on the individual seeker, but problematizing group cohesion. Arrival narratives and public rituals are examined as attempts to address various threats, anomalies and disruptions - they (re)marry entangled constructions of individual, place and Spirit and resolve contested discourses of community, …

Cornerstone Of Zion: The Archaeology Of The Latter-Day Saints, Matthew Lee Andersen Jan 2014

Cornerstone Of Zion: The Archaeology Of The Latter-Day Saints, Matthew Lee Andersen

Theses & ETDs

In this thesis, I examine the archaeology of religion at Nauvoo, Illinois, of the Latter-day Saints. Despite the many contributions of central figures of archaeology to the study of religion, many more steps must be taken to ensure the most effective and respectful methodology possible. Scriptures of the Latter-day Saints, some of their firsthand accounts of persecution and some scholarly work establish the central questions of the thesis. The excavations of nineteenth-century Nauvoo, Illinois, provide a context for the discussion of the study of religion through material culture. The work of three central figures in the archaeology of religion demonstrates …

Whose City? Live Music And Urban Development In Sarasota, Florida, David W. Baker Jan 2014

Whose City? Live Music And Urban Development In Sarasota, Florida, David W. Baker

Theses & ETDs

In this ethnography I examine the interactions between Sarasota's urban landscape and its “music scene,” a sphere of activities that are linked by their orientation around performance events featuring live music. My fieldwork focused on the experience of local musicians who write and perform original material. After Henri Lefebvre, musical culture is considered a simultaneously sonic, spatial, and social process that manifests in a series of event-based iterations. I attempt to trace a narrative that understands both recent history and current conflicts as a rhythmic interplay among images of the city, political institutions, economic webs, social networks, population movements, and …
