A Wreck Of A Site: An Archaeological Examination Of Cauldrons From The Storm Wreck, 8sj5459, Annie E. Carter
A Wreck Of A Site: An Archaeological Examination Of Cauldrons From The Storm Wreck, 8sj5459, Annie E. Carter
Theses & ETDs
In this thesis, I examine a set of historic iron and copper cauldrons from an 18th century Loyalist shipwreck off the coast of St. Augustine, in hopes of contributing to a narrative about a people largely forgotten by popular history. The examination of these cauldrons offers an entryway for the analysis and interpretation of Loyalist intentions. The cauldrons on the Storm site were part of a colonial, capitalistic society – as key items in an intermediary and inconclusive time for a refugee population. This allows us to view the cauldrons as both economic and social factors in Loyalist lifestyles; on …
Mypod: Exploring The Rhythmic Vessel, Matt Morgan
Mypod: Exploring The Rhythmic Vessel, Matt Morgan
Theses & ETDs
This essay is a supplement to the one-of-a-kind experience of myPOD: Exploring the Rhythmic Vessel. The myPOD experience offers the user an opportunity to explore the conventionally cloudy convergence of vast concepts, most notably within the realms of humanity, technology, and music. This experience invites the user to interact intercorporeally with the technological body of myPOD and to step into an immersive sensory playground in which musical connections can be formed by the user between humans and robots. The user explores the musicality of bodies, both biological and technological. This essay places the work into a larger context, drawing inspiration …
Resisting Confession In Two Young Adult Novels Of Imprisonment, Nicolas Torres
Resisting Confession In Two Young Adult Novels Of Imprisonment, Nicolas Torres
Theses & ETDs
This thesis examines the use of literary techniques to resist confession in two realistic young adult novels of imprisonment written in the autobiographical mode. The imprisoned, teenaged protagonists in John Marsden’s Letters from the Inside (1991) and Walter Dean Myers’s Monster (1999) introduce fragmentation, doubling, and multiplicity into their autobiographical texts. Using Michel Foucault's description of disciplinary confession as well as his mapping of potential avenues for subverting this practice, this thesis shows how these tactics can be used to resist disciplinary power. In both novels, linear autobiographical narratives, which Foucault rightly situates within confessional discourse, are positioned as a …
Frog Creek Burial Mound (8ma44): An Addition To The Safety Harbor Period Archaeological Record, Theresa Paschal
Frog Creek Burial Mound (8ma44): An Addition To The Safety Harbor Period Archaeological Record, Theresa Paschal
Theses & ETDs
This thesis presents Frog Creek Burial Mound (8Ma44) as a single component tumulus dating to the Safety Harbor Period (900-1725 CE). The data for this site have been reconstructed from obscured archives of the collector’s notes and a partially intact assemblage, both of which are curated at the South Florida Museum. Based on the existing data from the collector notes and artifacts, the site may represent an elite burial suggested by the excavated grave goods. This thesis discusses the implications of Frog Creek Burial mound for the associated Safety Harbor Culture and the Central Gulf Coast regional chronology through an …
Unjust Deserts: Food Insecurity, Structural Inequality, And Community Agency In Newtown, Fl, Juliana Dearr
Unjust Deserts: Food Insecurity, Structural Inequality, And Community Agency In Newtown, Fl, Juliana Dearr
Theses & ETDs
This thesis focuses on the issues surrounding food access in Newtown, the historic black neighborhood of Sarasota, FL. Poor nutrition, particularly in economically distressed areas, reinforces and maintains the violent cycle of poverty, as nutrition problems increase the risk of chronic health conditions. Ethnography and quantitative data collection on food availability and transportation access are the key methods. This research will show Newtown's consumption of healthy food is hindered by the sparse availability of fresh food, lacking transportation, education gaps, and time and money constraints. These barriers must be addressed to create systemic improvements to Newtown's welfare. Several community-based organizations, …
Ritual And Healing: Explorations Of The Placebo Phenomenon And Peruvian Curanderismo In Iquitos, Peru, Victoria Elizabeth Jara
Ritual And Healing: Explorations Of The Placebo Phenomenon And Peruvian Curanderismo In Iquitos, Peru, Victoria Elizabeth Jara
Theses & ETDs
Placebo effects can be used to explain the effectiveness of ritual healing. The evidence supporting the effectiveness of rituals and positive affective responses are due to neurobiological studies on placebo effects that point to the activation of the descending opioid and dopaminergic neural systems. Using Kaptchuk’s (2011) proposal of a ritual approach to understand the placebo phenomenon, I argue that placebo ritual theory can help explain how language, culture and metaphor affect physiological processes. Research for this thesis took place in Iquitos, Peru—the largest city in the Peruvian Amazon. Qualitative research was performed using semi-structured interviews and participant-observations. Healers and …

The Multiplicity Of Heritage At Warm Mineral Springs, Jodi L. Johnson
Theses & ETDs
This thesis explores the community and political processes associated with the heritage site of Warm Mineral Springs as it came into public ownership. The study examines the heritage preservation challenges facing the state of Florida and considers the history of preservation in the United States with suggestions on how to model a successful preservation process, based on two years of engagement with Warm Mineral Springs. This thesis uses the literature associated with preservation legislation, economic and social values of heritage within a community, and heritage tourism; examines the multiple layers of history at Warm Mineral Springs from archaeology, ecology, architecture, …
Mining For Emotions: An Investigation Into Empathy And Immersion In Video Games, Jonathan Weinberg
Mining For Emotions: An Investigation Into Empathy And Immersion In Video Games, Jonathan Weinberg
Theses & ETDs
As video games become more prevalent in society, it becomes necessary to research the effects video games may have on players. While prior research has shown that video games can be used to increase empathy, little research has been done on the effects of properties of video games. Immersion, the psychological experience of engaging with a videogame, is one of the more desirable aspects a game can have; that is, more immersive games are generally found to be more entertaining. The purpose of this study was to examine whether a game with higher immersion provokes a more empathetic response than …
Exploring Anthropology’S Potential As A Catalyst For Reformation In American Pedagogy, Nicole A. Ouellette
Exploring Anthropology’S Potential As A Catalyst For Reformation In American Pedagogy, Nicole A. Ouellette
Theses & ETDs
In this thesis, I analyze the current state of public education in the United States. I argue that heritage and food are both successful vehicles for learning, and I question why no combination of this sort has been offered to American pedagogy. I explain how I created a series of lesson plans that use this “novel combination” with the intention of teaching fourth grade students in a Florida public school about heritage and preservation. I describe the difficulties that teachers and administration are facing with the adoption of the Common Core State Standards in bringing creativity into the classroom. I …
Walt’S Exceptional Empire: Fordism, Hegemony, And Spectacle At Disney, Thayer Z. Warne
Walt’S Exceptional Empire: Fordism, Hegemony, And Spectacle At Disney, Thayer Z. Warne
Theses & ETDs
By addressing the legacy of Walt Disney and examining his corporation’s role in the world today, this thesis locates The Walt Disney Company within the narrative of American exceptionalism. Using a variety of both primary and secondary sources as part of its analysis—and dedicating significant attention to the Disney parks’ spatial layout— this thesis evaluates the connection between Disney’s own rendering of exceptionalism and its position as a multinational corporation that operates in a consumption-driven society. In doing so, this thesis touches upon the development of Disney in a post-Fordist economy, focusing on the company’s use of spectacle to promote …

Mental Toughness, Personality, And Benefit Finding, Maiah Taylor
Theses & ETDs
Over the past decades, mental toughness research has become more prevalent but has yet to include non-athletes. The present study was intended to evaluate mental toughness, personality, and benefit finding abilities in non-athletes. The sample consisted of 86 participants, 16 male, 58 female, 5 non-binary, and 7 who did not respond ranging in age from 18 to 69 years (M=22). The findings are discussed in the context of how mental toughness associated with personality, benefit finding and gender. A series of correlations and t-tests were conducted resulting in significant findings regarding the personality profile of those considered to be mentally …
Medical Tourism: Comparing Coronary Bypass Surgery In The U.S. And Abroad, William K. Willis, Alberto Coustasse
Medical Tourism: Comparing Coronary Bypass Surgery In The U.S. And Abroad, William K. Willis, Alberto Coustasse
Management Faculty Research
Rising health care costs have employers searching for remedies to the increasing rates they pay for employee health insurance. The development of U.S. health insurance policies, with the option of utilizing medical tourism as a low cost care provider for treatment of cardiac coronary bypass surgery provides a method for receiving treatment. The medical tourism approach to providing treatment for bypass surgery has prompted hospitals in India, Thailand, and Singapore to seek U.S. patients. A comparison of costs for bypass treatment between the U.S. and these countries illustrates some of the issues and concerns that arise when making such comparisons. …

Multiplying Perspectives And Improving Practice: What Can Happen When Undergraduate Students Partner With College Faculty To Explore Teaching And Learning, Alison Cook-Sather
Multiplying Perspectives And Improving Practice: What Can Happen When Undergraduate Students Partner With College Faculty To Explore Teaching And Learning, Alison Cook-Sather
Education Program Faculty Research and Scholarship
Traditional structures in higher education support a separation between faculty members’ and students’ perspectives on classroom practice. This is in part because student-faculty interactions are typically defined by a focus on content coverage and by a clear delineation between faculty and student roles in engaging that content. This paper focuses on key findings from an ongoing action research study that aims to address these basic questions: (1) What happens when faculty and students engage in structured dialogue with one another about teaching and learning outside of the regular spaces within which they interact? and (2) How can such dialogic engagement …

Negative Acculturation Conditions, Wellbeing, And The Mediating Role Of Separation In The Workplace, Leon T. B. Jackson, Dudley G. De Koker
Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences
This article reports on the results of research which assessed adverse acculturation conditions in the workplace. Acculturation conditions such as racism, discrimination, segregation and separation were evaluated as predictors to ascertain how they affect acculturation outcomes such as intentions to quit and ill-health, both physical and psychological, of workers in the workplace. A convenience sample (N = 327) was taken from various sectors, for example retail, banking, mining, police service, and the municipality. The study aimed to test the mediating role of separation in the relation between adverse acculturation conditions and wellbeing as measured by ill-health and intentions to quit. …

Coast Salish Spinning: Looking For Twist, Finding Change, Liz Hammond-Kaarremaa
Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings
Coast Salish textiles from the Pacific Northwest (northwest Washington state and southwest British Columbia) are relatively rare and unknown yet are masterpieces of sophisticated weaving and spinning techniques. Coast Salish blankets and robes, and the tools used to make them, have been the subjects of a few seminal works (Gustafson 1980; Loughran-Delahunt 1996; Marr 1979; Vanderburg 1953), but other than the occasional recording of the direction of twist, the spinning characteristics of the yarn itself have not been the focus of research. This gap is curious, given the uniqueness of Coast Salish spinning tools, the corresponding techniques, and the fibres …
Dressing The Leader, Dressing The Ancestor: The Longue Durée In The South Central Andes, Ann H. Peters
Dressing The Leader, Dressing The Ancestor: The Longue Durée In The South Central Andes, Ann H. Peters
Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings
The preservation and adornment of the dead in the South Central Andes can be traced over some twelve thousand years. The potential for preservation of human bodies and fine textiles in desert sands and high altitude caves contributed to a continuing social and political role of the dead in the lives of the living. Colonial period documents describe well-dressed mortuary bundles that participated in public ritual and could be cited as proof of heritage and validation of social leadership. However, the nature of social and political ancestry and its relationship to power change over time with the development of large-scale …

Vaccinating Vulnerable Populations, Paula B. Mcnabb
Vaccinating Vulnerable Populations, Paula B. Mcnabb
Theses and Graduate Projects
Influenza vaccination rates for all minority groups in Minnesota are lower than rates for Caucasians of all age groups. Since 2006, a collaborative partnership called Minnesota Immunization Networking Initiative (MINI) has provided free influenza vaccinations in convenient and trusted community settings throughout the Twin Cities metropolitan area of Minnesota in an attempt to address this health disparity. The literature highlights a number of barriers that negatively influence individuals' choices regarding acceptance of influenza vaccination but also highlights motivators, facilitators and processes that positively impact these decisions. Thirteen focus group interviews were conducted with individuals from the Ethiopian, Latino, Native American …
The Secrets Of Alorese ‘Silk’ Yarn: Kolon Susu, Triangle Trade And Underwater Women In Eastern Indonesia1, Emilie Wellfelt
The Secrets Of Alorese ‘Silk’ Yarn: Kolon Susu, Triangle Trade And Underwater Women In Eastern Indonesia1, Emilie Wellfelt
Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings
Eastern Indonesia is known for a great variety of textiles. One part of the region that has been largely overlooked in the literature is textiles of the Alor archipelago. However, the literature does recognise and speculate about the unusual silky character of some Alorese cloths that have entered Western museum collections. Based on fieldwork among weavers in the village Uma Pura, situated on a small island in the Pantar strait, this paper reveals the secret behind the characteristic shiny finish of the ‘silk’ sarongs from Alor. Ruled by necessity rather than choice weavers used to mix cotton with fibres from …
Conversationa And Encounter, Belinda Von Mengrsen
Conversationa And Encounter, Belinda Von Mengrsen
Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings
Textile artists often use items of traditional textile material culture as sites for primary research or encounter within their conceptual and physical practice. This research practice is, however, far more than aesthetic or visual analysis: rather, it allows for the observation of that border territory in which a new work of art begins and ends—the very place from which the ideas come—and also of how influences are layered, and evolve within our psyche. Ruth Hadlow, has described the use of traditional West-Timorese woven textiles as “a ‘tool’ with which to think?” (Hadlow, 2013). Through such tools, primary research may operate …

The Library For The Incarcerated Male Juveniles: An Observation Of Five Correctional Schools, Rafedzi E.R.K., Abrizah Abdullah
Archival Material (2010s)
This qualitative study extends our earlier research on what we have learned so far about the information needs of Malaysian male juvenile offenders. This focus is important to consider when designing and delivering the best possible library services to this group. The study explores the extent the prison library is used as the environment for information seeking of male juvenile delinquents. Data were collected using participants observation with 27 juveniles {13 to 21 years old) living in five correctional schools in Malaysia. Our observation at all research sites has led us to conclude that the prison library does not play …
A Habitat For “Coco”: A Social Studies Investigation With Preschool-Aged Children, Mary Bowne, Jennifer Kampmann
A Habitat For “Coco”: A Social Studies Investigation With Preschool-Aged Children, Mary Bowne, Jennifer Kampmann
School of Education, Counseling and Human Development
Every investigation begins with a “spark” or provocation; something that ignites conversation and action by the teacher and/or children. Learning takes place through the process of construction, thus answering the endless “whys” and the meaning of things, others, and life (Rinaldi, 2006), which can be accomplished through projects and investigations. As a teacher, nothing is more rewarding than seeing children’s enthusiasm for learning, specifically the zest to ask questions and take control of their own learning. When teachers create lessons that are engaging, provoke questions, research, and collaboration, the static classroom environment now transforms into a dynamic environment where action …
Performing Rootedness In The Negev/Naqab: Possibilities And Perils Of Competitive Planting, Emily Mckee
Performing Rootedness In The Negev/Naqab: Possibilities And Perils Of Competitive Planting, Emily Mckee
Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship
Through ethnographic and historical analysis of the Negev region of Israel, this article examines competitive planting as a common tool in land conflicts. In a context of disputed land ownership, some Bedouin Arab residents plant crops in defiance of government policy. Government enforcers of land-use regulations destroy many of these crops and engage in counterinsurgent tree-planting. I suggest that planting is such a potent tactic because it draws on “environmental idioms” of agricultural labor, the rootedness of trees, and a fundamental Jewish-Arab opposition that have been central to the development of both Israeli and Palestinian nationalisms. For Bedouin Arabs, whose …
The Cleansing Of The Temple In The Fourth Gospel As A Call To Action For Social Justice, Douglas Thompson Goodwin
The Cleansing Of The Temple In The Fourth Gospel As A Call To Action For Social Justice, Douglas Thompson Goodwin
MA in Religion Theses
Historically, there has been the attitude that the writer of the Fourth Gospel, due primarily to his emphasis on the high Christology of Jesus, is uninterested, or even unconcerned, with the issues of social justice. The contention of this study is to show that this is just the opposite. By placing the Temple cleansing episode at the beginning of Jesus' earthly ministry, instead of the end as the Synoptics do, the author of the Fourth Gospel uses Jesus' Temple episode as the vehicle for showing the importance of caring for those in society who have no voice and no future. …
