Gifts From The Thunder Beings, Roland Bohr
Gifts From The Thunder Beings, Roland Bohr
University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters
Gifts from the Thunder Beings examines North American Aboriginal peoples’ use of Indigenous and European distance weapons in big-game hunting and combat. Beyond the capabilities of European weapons, Aboriginal peoples’ ways of adapting and using this technology in combination with Indigenous weaponry contributed greatly to the impact these weapons had on Aboriginal cultures. This gradual transition took place from the beginning of the fur trade in the Hudson’s Bay Company trading territory to the treaty and reserve period that began in Canada in the 1870s.
Technological change and the effects of European contact were not uniform throughout North America, as …
Anthropologists And Their Traditions Across National Borders, Regna Darnell, Frederic W. Gleach
Anthropologists And Their Traditions Across National Borders, Regna Darnell, Frederic W. Gleach
University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters
Volume 8 of the Histories of Anthropology Annual series, the premier series published in the history of the discipline, explores national anthropological traditions in Britain, the United States, and Europe and follows them into postnational contexts. Contributors reassess the major theorists in twentieth-century anthropology, including the work of luminaries such as Franz Boas, Claude Lévi-Strauss, Bronisław Malinowski, A. R. Radcliffe-Brown, and Marshall Sahlins, as well as lesser-known but important anthropological work by Berthold Laufer, A. M. Hocart, Kenelm O. L. Burridge, and Robin Ridington, among others. These essays examine myriad themes such as the pedagogical context of the anthropologist as …
Music Along The Rapidan, James A. Davis
Music Along The Rapidan, James A. Davis
University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters
In December 1863, Civil War soldiers took refuge from the dismal conditions of war and weather. They made their winter quarters in the Piedmont region of central Virginia: the Union’s Army of the Potomac in Culpeper County and the Confederacy’s Army of Northern Virginia in neighboring Orange County. For the next six months the opposing soldiers eyed each other warily across the Rapidan River.
In Music Along the Rapidan James A. Davis examines the role of music in defining the social communities that emerged during this winter encampment. Music was an essential part of each soldier’s personal identity, and Davis …
Fluent Selves, Suzanne Oakdale, Magnus Course
Fluent Selves, Suzanne Oakdale, Magnus Course
University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters
Fluent Selves examines narrative practices throughout lowland South America focusing on indigenous communities in Brazil, Chile, Ecuador, and Peru, illuminating the social and cultural processes that make the past as important as the present for these peoples. This collection brings together leading scholars in the fields of anthropology and linguistics to examine the intersection of these narratives of the past with the construction of personhood. The volume’s exploration of autobiographical and biographical accounts raises questions about fieldwork, ethical practices, and cultural boundaries in the study of anthropology.
Rather than relying on a simple opposition between the “Western individual” and the …
Uses Of Plants By The Hidatsas Of The Northern Plains, Gilbert Livingston Wilson
Uses Of Plants By The Hidatsas Of The Northern Plains, Gilbert Livingston Wilson
University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters
In 1916 anthropologist Gilbert L. Wilson worked closely with Buffalobird-woman, a highly respected Hidatsa born in 1839 on the Fort Berthold Reservation in western North Dakota, for a study of the Hidatsas’ uses of local plants. What resulted was a treasure trove of ethnobotanical information that was buried for more than seventy-five years in Wilson’s archives, now held jointly by the Minnesota Historical Society and the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. Wilson recorded Buffalobird-woman’s insightful and vivid descriptions of how the nineteenth-century Hidatsa people had gathered, prepared, and used the plants and wood in their local …
Scars Of Partition, William F. S. Miles
Scars Of Partition, William F. S. Miles
University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters
Based on three decades of fieldwork throughout the developing world, Scars of Partition is the first book to systematically evaluate the long-term implications of French and British styles of colonialism and decolonization for ordinary people throughout the so-called Third World. It pays particular attention to the contemporary legacies of artificial boundaries superimposed by Britain and France that continue to divide indigenous peoples into separate postcolonial states. In so doing, it uniquely illustrates how the distinctive stamps of France and Britain continue to mark daily life along and behind these inherited borders in Africa, Asia, Oceania, and the Caribbean. Scars of …

Cruise Ship Tourism In Cozumel, Mexico: “Frios Como La Naturaleza De Los Gringos Lo Dice", Christine Vassallo-Oby
Latin American, Caribbean, and U.S. Latino Studies Faculty Scholarship
Cruise ship tourism is a dynamic site of inquiry within the anthropology of tourism. Its history and current social manifestations concerns millions of localities around the globe that combine to form a transnational entity like no other. Billions of dollars and tourists’ bodies transverse oceans every year and the historical, social, and political processes that follow these flows of money and people are appropriately complex for ethnographic engagement. Applied anthropology, as a method and theory dedicated to problem solving, seems is ripe for the study of cruise ship tourism.
Know Yourself And You Will Be Known: The Gospel Of Thomas And Middle Platonism, Seth A. Clark
Know Yourself And You Will Be Known: The Gospel Of Thomas And Middle Platonism, Seth A. Clark
CGU Theses & Dissertations
The Gospel of Thomas is a collection of 114 sayings attributed to Jesus and is primarily composed of rhetorical statements that were used to preserve the teachings of itinerant Greek philosophers. These collections were used to persuade individuals to join the philosophical schools represented, much like the early followers of the Jesus movement would use his teachings to convince others to join them as well. However, the theological background for the text is still debated because it contains esoteric and enigmatic references not fully understood by most scholars. This work argues that the theological and philosophical background for the Gospel …

For more than a decade, a movement has been gathering steam among geoscientists to designate an Anthropocene Epoch and formally recognize that we have entered a new geological age in which Earth’s systems are dominated by humans. Chemists, climatologists, and other scientists have entered the discussion, and there is a growing consensus that we are living in the Anthropocene. Nobel Prize-winning atmospheric chemist Paul Crutzen (2002a, 2002b; Crutzen and Stoermer 2000) coined the term, but the idea that humans are a driver of our planet’s climate and ecosystems has much deeper roots. Italian geologist Antonio Stoppani wrote of the “anthropozoic …

Spheres Of Semi-Legality: Discourse, Media And Informal Economic Practices In St. Petersburg, Russia (2000-Present), Maria Rosaria Roti
Wayne State University Dissertations
My dissertation project focuses on how the post-Yeltsin (2000 onwards) market economy actually works and how people define, identify and engage within this newly structured market economy. In order to understand this phenomenon my ethnographic study focuses on business in Russia from two perspectives. First, it discusses how Russian enterprises operate in Russia with the socially embedded informal economic practices inherited from the Soviet system, including trust, personal networks, patron-client relationships, system avoidance, bribery, and corruption. Second, it examines how foreign firms operate under these existing economic conditions in Russia while simultaneously still following FTC regulations and international law. Keeping …
Networks Of Users And Powers: Blackboard Software Roadmap As Cultural Practice, Diana Gellci
Networks Of Users And Powers: Blackboard Software Roadmap As Cultural Practice, Diana Gellci
Wayne State University Dissertations
With the rapid growth of eLearning applications - the software providing for learning through the Internet - it has become commonplace to describe those technologies as both simple tools and user-friendly. These two vague yet suggestive terms make the operating of the technology appear as social value and any related issues as a user's problem. Interested neo-liberal groups take a step further when considering eLearning technologies as the solution for the problems faced in the field. STS studies recognize that technology fetishism is strategically employed to justify the latest developments of capitalism as technological and logical.
This doctoral study examines …

by
LISA MONTES
December 2014
Advisor: Dr. Francisco Javier Higuero
Major: Modern Languages (Spanish)
Degree: Doctor of Philosophy
This dissertation explores the development of the characters in particular plays and poems of Spanish writer Federico García Lorca. The main theory that is applied in the analysis is that of Habitus, which was greatly elaborated upon by French philosopher Pierre Bourdieu. The first chapter discusses the character development of the women in the rural trilogy which includes the plays Yerma, Bodas de sangre and La casa de Bernarda …

The Sociolinguistic Situation And National Identity Of Cape Verde, Melissa Oquendo
The Sociolinguistic Situation And National Identity Of Cape Verde, Melissa Oquendo
Undergraduate Review
Cape Verde is a West African country located in the Atlantic Ocean, off the coast of Senegal. The archipelago is composed of 10 islands, 9 of which are populated (Santo Antão, São Vicente, São Nicolau, Sal, Boa Vista, Maio, Santiago, Fogo, and Brava). Santa Luzia is the only uninhabited island. Cape Verde was colonized by the Portuguese and therefore includes a rich mix of Portuguese and African cultures.
Because today’s Cape Verdeans are descendants of both the Portuguese and West Africans, there are elements of both in their languages, traditions, history, and development as a nation. These Portuguese and West …
"A Spreading And Abiding Hope": A. J. Conyers And Evangelical Theopolitical Imagination, Jacob Shatzer
"A Spreading And Abiding Hope": A. J. Conyers And Evangelical Theopolitical Imagination, Jacob Shatzer
Dissertations (1934 -)
In this work I argue that A. J. Conyers provides a promising example for countering various weaknesses in evangelical theopolitical imagination. I make this argument in two ways. First, I provide a critical reading of Conyers's overall scholarly project, seeking to understand it in its own context and in conversation with other scholars. In particular, I draw on the influence of Jürgen Moltmann, Johannes Althusius, Eric Voegelin, the Southern Agrarians, and Richard Weaver on Conyers's thought. I then focus on Conyers's political theology, exploring how he diagnoses the modern world and what he proposes for remedies. I explore Conyers's political …
Faithful Translations? Cross-Cultural Communications In Canadian Religious Freedom Litigation, Howard Kislowicz
Faithful Translations? Cross-Cultural Communications In Canadian Religious Freedom Litigation, Howard Kislowicz
Osgoode Legal Studies Research Paper Series
In three religious freedom cases pursued to the Supreme Court of Canada – Amselem, Multani, and Huterrian Brethren of Wilson Colony – religious freedom claimants engaged in litigation over a religious practice particular to their group. Some have argued that cases like these can be seen as cross-cultural encounters. How did the religious freedom claimants seek to make their practices – the succah, the kirpan, and the prohibition on being photographed – understood to the courts? And how did the courts respond to these claims? In this paper, I draw out two central values from the literature on cross-cultural communication: …
Diminished Returns: The Exorbitance Of Collecting Dna From All Arrestees, Carlos Jordi
Diminished Returns: The Exorbitance Of Collecting Dna From All Arrestees, Carlos Jordi
St. Thomas Law Review
This comment will examine the effects of a criminal justice system where DNA is collected from everyone who is arrested, regardless of the seriousness of the charge. Part L.A will begin with an analysis of King to provide an understanding of how the Supreme Court decision may permit states to collect DNA from all arrestees. DNA is used in the criminal justice system because of its ability to effectively identify people. Part I.B discusses DNA science and provides a cursory understanding of how information is gathered from an individual's genetic code. Part I.C displays how law enforcement uses DNA for …

The Buddha’S Great Miracle At Śrāvastī: A Translation From The Tibetan Mūlasarvāstivāda-Vinaya, David Fiordalis
Faculty Publications
This article offers an annotated translation of the story of the Buddha’s great miracle at Śrāvastī, as found in the Tibetan translation of the Mūlasarvāstivāda-vinaya. While miracles of the Buddha are many and various, the great miracle of Śrāvastī, one of the Buddha’s principal miracles, is almost the prototypical Buddhist miracle story, and the Mūlasarvāstivāda-vinaya contains a significant version of it. Yet of the many versions preserved in a variety of languages, this is one of the last to garner much scholarly attention. This article makes it more widely accessible to an interested audience, thereby contributing to the further …
Beliefs And Practices Of Malaysian Indians On The Concept Of The Divine, R.J. Hinduja Jayer Raman
Beliefs And Practices Of Malaysian Indians On The Concept Of The Divine, R.J. Hinduja Jayer Raman
Research Publications (2011 to 2015)
A belief system is a subpart of the cultural elements of society. It is divided into a number of types. One type of belief shared universally is the one relating to the concept of the divine. Even though this is a universal belief, its practice differs from one group to another, until it forms a type of identity unique to that community. This phenomenon also occurs among Malaysian Indians, where the belief principles and practices relating to the concept of the divine are unique. This is seen in current study, based on Malaysian Tamil dramas shown on the Astro Vaanavil …

A Look At A Small Classroom In A Big University: Through A Metaphor, Vividly, L. Nikitina, F. Furuoka
Research Publications (2011 to 2015)
In educational research literature there are two influential metaphors about learning. They describe this process as either “acquisition” or “participation” (Sfard, 1998). These metaphors have been widely used by scholars, researchers and educators. However, the students’ perspectives on learning have been underexplored. This article addresses this gap in research literature and examines metaphors about learning created by a group of foreign language learners in a big public university in East Malaysia. The findings indicate universality of people’s perceptions about learning and reveal the presence of both the “acquisition” and “participation” metaphors in the students’ images. The study considers the implications …
Toward A Community-Centric Approach To Address School Discipline Disparity, Jacqueline Roebuck Sakho
Toward A Community-Centric Approach To Address School Discipline Disparity, Jacqueline Roebuck Sakho
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
What you are engaging is more than a dissertation, but a dissertation in practice. It is a dissertation in community-centered practice for educational leadership. This is an agenda driven by the need to improve a problem of education practice that is a grave matter of social injustice.
This is a response to the persistent call for educational leadership to be community work, to be community-engaged, as community-centric leadership (centered in the community and central to the needs of the marginalized). The agenda is designed to deliver "site-specific" examples of problems of practice occurring in school settings. Site-specific examples are demonstrated …
Virtualizing The Word: Expanding Walter Ong's Theory Of Orality And Literacy Through A Culture Of Virtuality, Jennifer Camille Dempsey
Virtualizing The Word: Expanding Walter Ong's Theory Of Orality And Literacy Through A Culture Of Virtuality, Jennifer Camille Dempsey
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation seeks to create a vision for virtuality culture through a theoretical expansion of Walter Ong's literacy and orality culture model. It investigates the ubiquitous and multimodal nature of the virtuality cultural phenomenon that is mediated by contemporary technology and not explained by pre-existing cultural conventions. Through examining the theoretical underpinnings of orality and literacy culture, the dissertation explores the cultural shift that is just beginning to restructure human consciousness through the ways that society is connecting, exploring and communicating. Further, this dissertation examines the contrasts between virtuality culture features and those related to traditional literacy and orality types, …
