Principles Of Test Development In Papua New Guinea, Sarah Flint, Kristen Pammer
Principles Of Test Development In Papua New Guinea, Sarah Flint, Kristen Pammer
Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences
With over 800 languages and more than 1000 cultural groups, Papua New Guinea (PNG) provides a challenging environment in which to develop culturally appropriate psychometric tests. Consequently, few tests have been specifically developed for parallel-emic research in PNG. This paper proposes a framework in which to develop psychometric tests within PNG. Linguistic, cultural and social factors are all addressed and strategies for working within these cultural boundaries are posited. Models for translation and validation are assessed in light of the unique challenges presented by the linguistic diversity of PNG. An alternative methodology of translation more appropriate for PNG is also …
Cephalometric Regional Superimpositions -- Digital Vs. Analog Accuracy And Precision: 2. The Mandible, Kevin Mccaffrey
Cephalometric Regional Superimpositions -- Digital Vs. Analog Accuracy And Precision: 2. The Mandible, Kevin Mccaffrey
Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Introduction: Lateral cephalometric superimpositions (LCS) are used to measure dental and skeletal changes that occur in the craniofacial complex over time. Orthodontists use LCSs to assess treatment outcomes. The purpose of this study was to conduct an assessment of the measured displacement of defined dental landmarks across digital and analog methods of mandibular regional serial superimposition as compared to an implant-registered superimposition reference. The data used in this study was derived from the Mathew's Acquisition Group implant sample; the first United States longitudinal study of growing children with maxillary and mandibular Björk type metallic implants. Methods: Sixty-six lateral cephalometric radiographs …

Welcome Home Ranch Rockshelter: Examinations Of Prehistoric Cultural Transitions In The Palmer Divide, Colorado, Katherine V. Mayo
Welcome Home Ranch Rockshelter: Examinations Of Prehistoric Cultural Transitions In The Palmer Divide, Colorado, Katherine V. Mayo
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Welcome Home Ranch rockshelter is located in the Palmer Divide region of Colorado. The archaeological evidence on site suggests that this rockshelter was occupied between the Late Archaic period (c. 1000 BC – AD 150) and Early Ceramic period (c. AD 150- 1150). Excavations at Welcome Home Ranch provided a dataset of lithics, ceramics, and features with which to test ideas about prehistoric life during this transitional time frame between the Archaic stage and the Late Prehistoric stage. It is during this transitional time period, c. AD 150, that the Palmer Divide region and its prehistoric residents experienced a variable …

An Overview Of The Evidence For Tuberculosis From Ancient Egypt, Lisa Sabbahy Dr.
An Overview Of The Evidence For Tuberculosis From Ancient Egypt, Lisa Sabbahy Dr.
Faculty Book Chapters
The study of human remains from ancient Egypt and Nubia has captured the imagination of many people for generations, giving rise to the discipline of palaeopathology and fostering bioarchaeological research. This book contains 16 papers that cover material presented at a workshop entitled 'Palaeopathology in Egypt and Nubia: A Century in Review,' held at the Natural History Museum, London (August 29-30, 2012), which formed part of a three-year research project, 'Sir Grafton Elliot Smith: Palaeopathology and the Archaeological Survey of Nubia.' The papers explore the subject of palaeopathology from its beginnings in the early 1900s through to current research themes …

A Phenomenological Exploration Of Teacher Experiences In Creating And Teaching A Senior Year English Transition Course, Kimberly Kaye Parsons
A Phenomenological Exploration Of Teacher Experiences In Creating And Teaching A Senior Year English Transition Course, Kimberly Kaye Parsons
Theses and Dissertations--Curriculum and Instruction
The purpose of this qualitative transcendental phenomenological study is to describe a particular phenomenon: the lived experiences of high school teachers who were responsible for creating and teaching a senior-year English Transition Course. Moustakas’ methods, framework and data analysis guidelines, coupled with interviews using Seidman’s three-interview process, is the best procedure for achieving the research aim. Thus, the study is based upon the results of interviews of 10 high school teachers from schools within a specific geographic region who collaborated with four English faculty members from a comprehensive four-year institution within the same region, over a period of three years. …

"Doch Sehnend Stehst /Am Ufer Du” (“But Longing You Stand On The Shore”): Hölderlin, Philosophy, Subjectivity, And Finitude, Richard Thomas Eldridge
Philosophy Faculty Works
This essay first surveys Hölderlin’s mature philosophical sense of the human subject as caught ineluctably between abstract reflection and concrete receptivity, and it contrasts that sense briefly with the stances of Kant, Schiller, and Hegel. It then traces the consequences of this sense for Hölderlin’s poetology, and it concludes by showing how both this philosophical sense and this poetology are enacted in Hölderlin’s late, major fragment “Rousseau.”

Intercultural Communication Competence: Summary Of 30-Year Research And Directions For Future Study, Guo-Ming Chen
Communication Studies Faculty Publications
This chapter attempts to record the pulse of the trend by reporting our research on the subject of intercultural communication competence in the last 30 years from three perspectives: (1) The literature review of the concept was selectively and representatively made; (2) the conceptualization and measurement of the concept was proposed through the process of model building and instrument development; and (3) challenges and directions for future research on the concept embedded in the impact of new technology were also stipulated.

American Hamlet: Shakespearean Epistemology In David Foster Wallace's Infinite Jest, James Jason Walsh
American Hamlet: Shakespearean Epistemology In David Foster Wallace's Infinite Jest, James Jason Walsh
ETD Archive
Infinite Jest has been viewed by champions of its cause as a solution to the defeatist irony of postmodernism and by critics as a postmodern gag in which the reader falls victim to intellectual "jest." Exploring the text's initial affiliations with Hamlet is a fundamental move toward stabilizing Infinite Jest's status as a sincere and authentic representation of American life at the turn of the twenty-first century. The shattered nature of reality and the "stinking thinking" inherent in addiction are depicted through the narrative structure, in which the time is literally "out of joint," and the "antic disposition" of various …
Indian Play, Lisa K. Neuman
Indian Play, Lisa K. Neuman
University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters
When Indian University—now Bacone College—opened its doors in Indian Territory (now Oklahoma) in 1880, it was a small Baptist institution designed to train young Native Americans to be teachers and Christian missionaries among their own people and to act as agents of cultural assimilation. From 1927 to 1957, however, Bacone College changed course and pursued a new strategy of emphasizing the Indian identities of its students and projecting often-romanticized images of Indianness to the non-Indian public in its fund-raising campaigns. Money was funneled back into the school as administrators hired Native American faculty who in turn created innovative curricular programs …
That Dream Shall Have A Name, David L. Moore
That Dream Shall Have A Name, David L. Moore
University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters
The founding idea of “America” has been based largely on the expected sweeping away of Native Americans to make room for EuroAmericans and their cultures. In this authoritative study, David L. Moore examines the works of five well-known Native American writers and their efforts, beginning in the colonial period, to redefine an “America” and “American identity” that includes Native Americans.
That Dream Shall Have a Name focuses on the writing of Pequot Methodist minister William Apess in the 1830s; on Northern Paiute activist Sarah Winnemucca in the 1880s; on Salish/Métis novelist, historian, and activist D’Arcy McNickle in the 1930s; and …
Reading Unruly, Zahi Zalloua
Reading Unruly, Zahi Zalloua
University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters
Drawing on literary theory and canonical French literature, Reading Unrulyexamines unruliness as both an aesthetic category and a mode of reading conceived as ethical response. Zahi Zalloua argues that when faced with an unruly work of art, readers confront an ethical double bind, hesitating then between the two conflicting injunctions of either thematizing (making sense) of the literary work, or attending to its aesthetic alterity or unreadability.
Creatively hesitating between incommensurable demands (to interpret but not to translate back into familiar terms), ethical readers are invited to cultivate an appreciation for the unruly, to curb the desire for hermeneutic …
Colonial Mediascapes, Jeffrey Glover, Matt Cohen
Colonial Mediascapes, Jeffrey Glover, Matt Cohen
University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters
In colonial North and South America, print was only one way of communicating. Information in various forms flowed across the boundaries between indigenous groups and early imperial settlements. Natives and newcomers made speeches, exchanged gifts, invented gestures, and inscribed their intentions on paper, bark, skins, and many other kinds of surfaces. No one method of conveying meaning was privileged, and written texts often relied on nonwritten modes of communication. Colonial Mediascapes examines how textual and nontextual literatures interacted in colonial North and South America. Extending the textual foundations of early American literary history, the editors bring a wide range of …
Native Diasporas, Gregory D. Smithers, Brooke N. Newman
Native Diasporas, Gregory D. Smithers, Brooke N. Newman
University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters
The arrival of European settlers in the Americas disrupted indigenous lifeways, and the effects of colonialism shattered Native communities. Forced migration and human trafficking created a diaspora of cultures, languages, and people. Gregory D. Smithers and Brooke N. Newman have gathered the work of leading scholars, including Bill Anthes, Duane Champagne, Daniel Cobb, Donald Fixico, and Joy Porter, among others, in examining an expansive range of Native peoples and the extent of their influences through reaggregation. These diverse and wide-ranging essays uncover indigenous understandings of self-identification, community, and culture through the speeches, cultural products, intimate relations, and political and legal …
