Development Of An Attribution Of Racial/Ethnic Health Disparities Scale, Robert E. Braun Phd., James H. Price, Jagdish Khubchandani, Erica Payton, Prasum Bhattacharjee

Health and Sport Sciences Faculty Scholarship

The purpose of this study was to develop an Attribution of Racial/Ethnic Health Disparities (AREHD) scale. A convenience sample of undergraduate college students (n = 423) at four Midwestern universities was recruited to respond to the survey. A pilot test with undergraduate students (n = 23) found the survey had good acceptability and readability level (SMOG = 11th grade). Using exploratory factor analysis we found the two a priori subscales were confirmed: individual responsibility and social determinants. Internal reliabilities of the subscales were: individual responsibility (alpha = 0.87) and social determinants (alpha = 0.90). Test–retest stability reliabilities were: individual responsibility …

Imaginary Worlds: Using Visual Network Scales To Capture Perceptions Of Social Networks, Ajay Mehra, Stephen P. Borgatti, Scott M. Soltis, Theresa M. Floyd, Daniel S. Halgin, Brandon Ofem, Virginie Lopez-Kidwell

Management and Marketing Faculty Publications

Social networks are not just patterns of interaction and sentiment in the real world; they are also cognitive (re)constructions of social relations, some real, some imagined. Focusing on networks as mental entities, our essay describes a new method that relies on stylized network images to gather quantitative data on how people “see” specific aspects of their social worlds. We discuss the logic of our approach, present several examples of “visual network scales,” discuss some preliminary findings, and identify some of the problems and prospects in this nascent line of work on the phenomenology of social networks.

Energy Expenditure In The Backcountry, Mandy Pojha, Cara Ocobock, John Gookin Jan 2014

Energy Expenditure In The Backcountry, Mandy Pojha, Cara Ocobock, John Gookin

Research in Outdoor Education

The study of energy economics, known as energetics, has played a key role in shaping human ecology, evolution, and performance (Leonard & Ulijaszek, 2002). Research on energetics gives insight into how humans interact with their environment and how differences in body shape and size can impact that interaction. This understanding is particularly insightful for humans living in the backcountry for extended periods of time. Selecting food types and amounts to meet high-energy demands in the backcountry setting is a challenge, because energy demand models have primarily been based on lab studies that, in hindsight, appear to routinely underestimate energy demands …

Internalized Model Minority Myth, Asian Values, And Help-Seeking Attitudes Among Asian American Students, Paul Youngbin Kim, Donghun Lee Jan 2014

Internalized Model Minority Myth, Asian Values, And Help-Seeking Attitudes Among Asian American Students, Paul Youngbin Kim, Donghun Lee

SPU Works

The present study examined cultural factors underlying help-seeking attitudes of Asian American college students (N = 106). Specifically, we explored internalized model minority myth as a predictor of help-seeking attitudes and tested an intrapersonal-interpersonal framework of Asian values as a mechanism by which the two are related. Results indicated that internalized model minority myth significantly predicted unfavorable help-seeking attitudes, and emotional self-control mediated this relationship. Interpersonal values and humility were nonsignificant mediators, contrary to our hypotheses. The findings suggest that the investigation of internalized model minority myth in help-seeking research is a worthwhile endeavor, and they also highlight emotional …

"Over The River And Through The Woods": An Analysis Of Understory And Canopy Plant Diversity In Urban Riparian Forests, Carlisle R. Evans Peck Jan 2014

"Over The River And Through The Woods": An Analysis Of Understory And Canopy Plant Diversity In Urban Riparian Forests, Carlisle R. Evans Peck

Urban Forest Project

As population growth explodes and urban areas expand, studying the ecology of urban areas has become increasingly important. Urban development has been shown to drastically alter native habitats and to severely degrade biodiversity. However, urban landscapes also hold the potential to harbor and support valuable biodiversity especially if managed correctly. We studied the understory herbaceous plant and overstory tree canopy diversity of eight forested ravines in the small cities of Rock Island and Moline IL surrounded by a range of urban development intensity. The goal of the project was to determine whether or not the composition of the plant communities …

"I am very happy and proud to present the first issue of the journal p-e-r-f-o-r-m-a-n-c-e. This journal, I dreamed it a few years ago. I wanted to create a journal in France that deals with the field of performance studies and the performing arts, that is international and multilingual, with at least French and English as languages, and the desire to extend it progressively to other languages. I also wanted a journal that makes the bridge between artists and researchers, in which artists and researchers could participate, each with their own way of expressing themselves and speaking about their work. …

A Persistent Quandary: The Rural School Improvement Project, 1953-1957, Richard E. Day, Lindsey N. Devries, Amanda L. Hoover

Curriculum and Instruction Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Berea College's Rural School Improvement Project worked directly with more than 5,000 children and 63 teaching fellows in 39 different schools over 13 counties, and one independent school district, involving 10 county school supervisors. Project estimates claimed an indirect impact on approximately 45,000 children within the RSIP school districts. The RSIP represented the thinking of national leaders of rural education in the 1950s who promoted improved administration of the schools combined with an active community engagement program based on “full respect for human personality” and “shared judgments.” Following so many decades of poverty and isolation, it is no easy task …

Blessed Is She Who Dances For Justice And Peace, Sr Martha Ann Kirk Thd Jan 2014

Blessed Is She Who Dances For Justice And Peace, Sr Martha Ann Kirk Thd

Verbum Incarnatum: An Academic Journal of Social Justice

Carla De Sola, a Juilliard-educated dancer, choreographer, teacher, and author, has led sacred dance on issues of peace, the environment, and social justice. Dance and the arts can lead lamentation in the face of evil and nurture imagination and creativity. The fear that leads to violence is often irrational and prompted by emotions. Arts can help to illumine and to heal feelings. The ideas of Teilhard de Chardin, SJ, influenced De Sola and led to the name Omega Liturgical Dance Company. De Chardin’s ideas underlie her extensive use of dance based on caring for creation including the annual St. Francis’ …

Bangalore: Urban Development And Environmental Injustice, Mayrah Udvardi

Honors Thesis Collection

This thesis bridges the transnational discourses on environmental justice and urban social inequality through an in depth analysis of Bangalore, India. I define environmental justice as the meaningful participation in the development of the environment and the fair access to that environment across peoples regardless of difference. Although gaining traction in other global cities, environmental justice has not been considered in Indian cities because the conceptualization of the “environment” is pragmatically restricted to rural areas. I ground this thesis in three core arguments: (1) the natural environment and built environment exist in a hybrid form in both cities and rural …

Information Systems For “Wicked Problems” – Proposing Research At The Intersection Of Social Media And Collective Intelligence, Detlef Schoder, Johannes Putzke, P. Takis Metaxas, Peter Gloor, Kai Fischbach

Faculty Research and Scholarship

The objective of this commentary is to propose some fruitful research direction built upon the reciprocal interplay of social media and collective intelligence. We focus on “wicked problems” — a class of what Introne et al. 2013 call “problems for which no single computational formulation of the problem is sufficient, for which different stakeholders do not even agree on what the problem really is, and for which there are no right or wrong answers, only answers that are better or worse from different points of view”. We argue that information systems research in particular can aid in designing appropriate systems …

Family Violence In Aboriginal Australian Communities: Causes And Potential Solutions, Eden Littrell Jan 2014

Family Violence In Aboriginal Australian Communities: Causes And Potential Solutions, Eden Littrell

Honors Thesis Collection

This thesis is an investigation into why family violence in Aboriginal Australian communities is so severe, and an examination into ways in which this violence might be decreased. It is also a critique of the two competing narratives around violence in Aboriginal communities. The political left typically tells a story about the legacy of violent colonization, and the consequent need to improve Aboriginal legal rights. On the right the narrative is less well defined, but the argument typically focuses on the importance of personal responsibility, or on the role of traditional culture in creating violence. This thesis argues that the …

An International Perspective Concerning Impact Of Supervisor - Subordinate Relationship On Envy, Knowledge Sharing, And Relational Conflict Among Employees, Ankur Nandedkar, Vishal Midha Jan 2014

An International Perspective Concerning Impact Of Supervisor - Subordinate Relationship On Envy, Knowledge Sharing, And Relational Conflict Among Employees, Ankur Nandedkar, Vishal Midha

Journal of International & Interdisciplinary Business Research (2014-2019)

Envy has been relatively ignored in organizational behavior research. In this study, we focus on the impact of supervisor subordinate relationship (LMX) on envy. In addition, we also investigate the consequences of envy in terms of employee knowledge sharing and relational conflict. Building on Affective events theory, we argue that employees who do not have a good relationship with their supervisors (low quality LMX) will exhibit higher levels of envy. As a result, they will restrict their knowledge sharing, and engage in relational conflict in the workplace. Partial least squares based structural equation modeling was applied to the data derived …

Until relatively recently, long-acting injectable (LAI) formulations were only available for first-generation antipsychotics and their utilization decreased as use of oral second-generation antipsychotics (SGA) increased. Although registry-based naturalistic studies show LAIs reduce rehospitalization more than oral medications in clinical practice, this is not seen in recent randomized clinical trials. PROACTIVE (Preventing Relapse Oral Antipsychotics Compared to Injectables Evaluating Efficacy) relapse prevention study incorporated efficacy and effectiveness features. At 8 US academic centers, 305 patients with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder were randomly assigned to LAI risperidone (LAI-R) or physician's choice oral SGAs. Patients were evaluated during the 30-month study by masked, …

The recent series of large genome-wide association studies in European and Japanese cohorts established that Parkinson disease (PD) has a substantial genetic component. To further investigate the genetic landscape of PD, we performed a genome-wide scan in the largest to date Ashkenazi Jewish cohort of 1130 Parkinson patients and 2611 pooled controls. Motivated by the reduced disease allele heterogeneity and a high degree of identical-by-descent (IBD) haplotype sharing in this founder population, we conducted a haplotype association study based on mapping of shared IBD segments. We observed significant haplotype association signals at three previously implicated Parkinson loci: LRRK2 (OR = …

Using The Spatial Variability Of Lead In Urban Soils And Demographic Variables To Predict Exposure Risks: An Environmental Justice Analysis In Terre Haute, Indiana, Heather A. Foxx Jan 2014

Using The Spatial Variability Of Lead In Urban Soils And Demographic Variables To Predict Exposure Risks: An Environmental Justice Analysis In Terre Haute, Indiana, Heather A. Foxx

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Terre Haute, Indiana, is similar to many older cities throughout the United States with a history of manufacturing and industry that relied on extensive road and rail networks. This industrial history has resulted in the presence of over 20 brownfields and even a Superfund Site within the city today. Historic neighborhoods and abundance of pre-1950's homes is another characteristic of the city. Unfortunately, improper removal and deterioration of lead (Pb) paints, as well as high Pb solder used in gutters, appear to be significant sources of soil Pb in Terre Haute. Despite the fact that most new environmental sources of …
