Returning Urbanite, Matthew H. Amster Jan 2014

Returning Urbanite, Matthew H. Amster

Anthropology Faculty Publications

Christian is not a typical returning urban-rural migrant. Unlike most men who come back to the Kelabit Highlands after living in town, he did not return having struggled to make a decent living, nor did he return expecting to get married and start a family. Christian had already done both, leaving behind a good job and returning with his wife and children. What he did not anticipate is how out of place and misunderstood he would be once back home. East Vs. West: South Korean Student Acculturation, Jeremy Grabiner Jan 2014

East Vs. West: South Korean Student Acculturation, Jeremy Grabiner

Capstone Research Projects

This paper is an ethnography that explores the acculturation of South Korean exchange students at Southern Adventist university through a triangulation of information from theory, interviews, and field observation. The paper relies on Young Yun Kim’s theory of acculturation, which closely looks at the push and pull of one’s home and host culture in the process of acculturation. In my ethnography, I observed approximately 60-100 South Korean students, ages 18-23, in different social settings such as church, social dining, and study. Full participant, participant observer, and full observer were the three methods of observation used in the various social settings. …

Global Diasporas And Mission, Amos Yong, Chandler H. Im Jan 2014

Global Diasporas And Mission, Amos Yong, Chandler H. Im

Regnum Edinburgh Centenary Series

The movement of people from their homelands is increasing exponentially. Such waves of both immigration and migration triggered by various factors have created new opportunities for the church and its mission. This volume explores such global diasporas from both ecclesiological and missiological perspectives. Its various case studies invite reconsideration of the missionary and evangelistic task of the church in response to contemporary global dynamics. The image of the dandelion on the front cover symbolizes diverse people groups dispersed around the globe, even as the Christian imagination views such dispersal as being carried by the winds of the Holy Spirit.

An Examination Of How Siop Strategies Can Increase Second Language Acquisition In The Secondary Science Classroom, Kyla Plumlee

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

The study compared a 110 minute intervention block, where English language learners (ELL) were taught through lessons using the Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP) method with a control group that received didactic lectures and inquiry labs for 110 minutes. The aim of the research was to examine the efficacy of the intervention in regards to increasing comprehension and achievement for English language learners. Students were given a pre-unit questionnaire and a post unit questionnaire, along with a unit long portfolio to assess changes in their comprehension and achievement levels. The results of this study indicated that students receiving the SIOP …

Place-Names In Mexico-Tenochtitlan. Ethnohistory 61, No. 2 (Spring 2014), Pp. 329-355., Barbara E. Mundy

Art History and Music Faculty Publications

The place-names that residents of the Mexica capital of Tenochtitlan (today Mexico City) gave to their city were both descriptive of topography and commemorative of history. Largely efaced from the Spanish historical register, Mexico City’s Nahuatl place-names were rescued from historical oblivion by José Antonio Alzate in the eighteenth century and again by Alfonso Caso in the twentieth. However, efacement is not equal to extinction, and this article argues for the continued use, even creation, of Nahuatl place-names into the eighteenth century. It suggests that the scholar’s desire to use place-names as an index to a pre-Hispanic past has obscured …

Making A ‘Hydropower Nation’: Subjectivity, Mobility, And Work In The Nepalese Hydroscape, Austin Lord Jan 2014

Making A ‘Hydropower Nation’: Subjectivity, Mobility, And Work In The Nepalese Hydroscape, Austin Lord

HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies

This essay focuses ethnographic attention on changing patterns of subjectivity, livelihood, and agency co-arising within the production of Nepal's imagined hydropower future. As the projects and processes of hydropower development proliferate across the physical and human geographies of Nepal they produce many different kinds of risk and opportunity, as well as labor, mobility, and 'project-affected people'. Combining empirical and visual methods, this essay describes how these lived hydroscapes are shaped by shifting concepts of locality, belonging, citizenship, and 'affectedness' that are constantly evolving in response to an entanglement of aspirations and future-making projects.

The Changes In Mainland Chinese Families During The Social Transition: A Critical Analysis, Anqi Xu, Yan Ruth Xia Jan 2014

The Changes In Mainland Chinese Families During The Social Transition: A Critical Analysis, Anqi Xu, Yan Ruth Xia

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications

Modernization theory offers possible explanations for family changes related to advances in science and technology, and socio-economic development in industrial societies. Modernization impacts family structure, relationship, values and beliefs. Families become nuclear while people become mobile and the society becomes urban. Economic development provides employment opportunities outside the birthplace. Away from kinship network, a nuclear family is less influenced and controlled by elder members in the extended family in fulfilling its traditional roles and obligations (Parsons, 1943). The changes occur in all societies although they may vary in pace across societies (Goode, 1982). Modernization theory is criticized for valuing Western …

The Cultural Contexts Of Children’S Prosocial Behaviors, Maria Rosario De Guzman, Kieu-Anh Do, Car Mun Kok

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications

In 1976 Beatrice Whiting famously urged researchers to “unpackage” the concept of culture and related constructs. She highlighted the need in social and behavioral research to tease out the complex and often interwoven factors that might underlie superficial culture group differences in child outcomes and suggested looking more closely at the child’s learning environment, the details within which could provide important insight regarding children’s behaviors that could better explain how culture might be manifested in the developmental landscape (Whiting, 1976). Almost 40 years later, the importance of culture in children’s development is widely recognized, nonetheless researchers continue to wrestle with …
