Redefining The Past: Women In Classical Mayan Culture, Lucia Aguilar Apr 2014

Redefining The Past: Women In Classical Mayan Culture, Lucia Aguilar

UROP Posters

It is important to acknowledge that a majority of research done in archaeology and anthropology or most sciences has had a strong androcentric bias. In my own personal experiences I noticed growing up taking history classes that always taught women in the past were primarily responsible for their household and children or other typical roles women were constantly simplified to. There were always the occasional exceptional women in society that we hear about who “pushed boundaries” or “broke barriers” stepping into male roles, but what about taking a second look at the past without a Western androcentric bias. In some …

The Copper Strike Of 1968-1969, Brendan Pelto Apr 2014

The Copper Strike Of 1968-1969, Brendan Pelto

Retrospection & Respect: The 1913-1914 Mining/Labor Strike Symposium of 2014

In May of 1968, workers at the Kingston mine, a branch of the Calumet Division of Universal Oil Products walked off the site in protest of a safety issue involving a man-car. Knowing their contracts were due for negotiation in just a few months, the workers quickly returned, only to find themselves striking yet again just three months later, when negotiations failed. Requesting pay equal to that of the workers at the nearby White Pine mine was unacceptable to the heads of Universal Oil, the corporation which bought the long running Calumet & Hecla just a year earlier in 1968. …

The Evaluation Of Wellness Programs For Our Returning Veterans, Alexandra Rawson Apr 2014

The Evaluation Of Wellness Programs For Our Returning Veterans, Alexandra Rawson

Annual Undergraduate Conference on Health and Society

Today we continue to experience inefficiencies in understanding the mental health and cultural needs of returning service members. I have conducted my own personal research to best comprehend the emotions and needs of returning veterans, evaluating the practices that are most beneficial for healing and reintegration. The primary focus of my independent study was to observe the current mental health treatments that are offered to the veterans outside of the traditional medical realm. In relation to this, I wanted to evaluate the role that religious and spiritual practices play in the veterans’ healing process. I spent four months observing and …

Mental Health In Jamaica: An Approach To Awareness And Treatment In Children, Sam Curran, Lilly Naqvi

Annual Undergraduate Conference on Health and Society

The awareness, perception and treatment of Autism was studied during a service study abroad class to Petersfield, Jamaica during the winters of 2013 and 2014. The program was developed to gain a basic understanding of the etiology of the disorder, and to examine the dynamic of a rural population’s outlook on health. Parents, teachers, and other community members were interviewed and engaged in discussion to share knowledge and perceptions of Autism. We will discuss our experience and findings.

Our preliminary conclusions include the following. First, the amount and availability of resources affects the parents and children, impacting his or her …

Placebo Effects, Ritual Causes, Tessa Weyrauch Apr 2014

Placebo Effects, Ritual Causes, Tessa Weyrauch

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

The placebo effect is the power of belief positively manifested for the benefit of the patient. There are two ways that the placebo effect has been seen historically: a standard to clinically test the true efficacy of an active drug and as a sham given by people in a variety of medical positions from doctors to con artists. The use of the placebo effect as a treatment in and of itself has been greeted with distain by scientific researchers and the public because the beneficial reaction the body is creating is due to “belief” instead of “treatment.” However, the placebo …

Family Size And Socioeconomic Status In Humla District, Nepal, Lucy B. Tompkins Apr 2014

Family Size And Socioeconomic Status In Humla District, Nepal, Lucy B. Tompkins

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

In a remote district of Nepal in the Himalayas, known as Humla District, increased access to health care and contraception in the past decade have given village families more options for family planning. In other research on health seeking, socioeconomic status indicators such as household education level, months of food security, and occupation have been associated with contraceptive behaviors. Based on theories related to demographic and health transitions, we hypothesized that families with higher socioeconomic statuses were more likely to have lower fertility. Multiple regressions of a handful of indicators of socioeconomic status derived from ethnographic and survey data collected …

Moderating Stereotype Judgments Through A Priming Anecdote, Michele L. Schahczenski Apr 2014

Moderating Stereotype Judgments Through A Priming Anecdote, Michele L. Schahczenski

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

This study investigates whether stereotyping can be changed through a short priming anecdote. Eighty four participants were randomly assigned to one of four groups and read one of the four anecdotes depending on story valence and the race of the main character: (1) positive (e.g. saving a life) and white; (2) positive and black; (3) negative (e.g. robbing a store) and white; and (4) negative and black. After reading the anecdote, the participants took the Weapon Identification Task (WIT). In the WIT a photograph of either a white or a black person’s face was briefly presented, which was replaced by …

Women’S Health Seeking Behavior In Rural Uganda, Sophia A. Bay Apr 2014

Women’S Health Seeking Behavior In Rural Uganda, Sophia A. Bay

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

My project analyzes the usage of traditional healers and biomedical healthcare by pregnant women in the rural region of the Nakaseke District, Uganda. This is of concern to medical anthropologists because childbirth decision-making is a result of social change, a topic that is rapidly becoming more important in international development research. With data that Kimber Haddix McKay and Catherine Sanders have collected in 2011 and 2013, I utilized inferential and descriptive statistical analyses to determine my predicted hypotheses that age and education level are the most influential factors during prenatal care and delivery, that women who have a more traditional …

Balancing Efficiency And Compassion: Researching Best Practices For Homeless Shelter Policy Manuals, Ally Guldborg

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

The purpose of this project is to use qualitative content analysis to help improve the policies and practices of the Poverello Center. The Poverello Center acts as an emergency shelter and food bank for persons experiencing hunger or homelessness in the Missoula area. The Poverello Center aims to balance efficiency and compassion as it provides these services to all who need them. In order to meet this goal, the organization must have clear and enforceable policies for staff, volunteers, and clients. The researcher will work in collaboration with the staff and administration of the Poverello Center to examine the organization’s …

Cyberstage: A New Era Of Theatre Practice, Hanasara Ito

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

In the age of the internet, the World Wide Web is fully integrated in our daily lives— and careers. The internet also is increasingly important to artists for marketing and publicity—and as actual performance. My research project investigates Youtube as well as text-based social media (twitter, facebook, blogs, etc.) to ask how such forms are integrated art performances for the modern age. My project has been approved as part of an Ethnographic Field Methods course for Spring 2014, focusing on the cyber-nation of UM over the past two decades. I will focus on the artistic aspects of this process within …

How Should We Teach Human Sexuality At The University Of Montana?, Sandi M. O'Brien Apr 2014

How Should We Teach Human Sexuality At The University Of Montana?, Sandi M. O'Brien

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

The University of Montana offers a course, Human Sexuality cross-listed with Anthropology and Biology. As a major in Anthropology, I chose this course to gain an ethnographic cross-cultural perspective on human sexuality. In 2011, the course was taught from a health and human performance pedagogy perspective stressing biological knowledge. The cross-cultural comparison focused on different pedophilias in western, primarily U.S. society. Anthropology of human sexuality reflects every aspect of society and culture. How should the pedagogy of this course span different disciplines and integrate biological, cross-cultural, and also legal issues in K-16 sex education? My initial research reveals that college …

Labor And Vulnerability Among Pastoralists In Northern Kenya, Bilinda Straight Apr 2014

Labor And Vulnerability Among Pastoralists In Northern Kenya, Bilinda Straight

Faculty Research and Creative Activities Award (FRACAA)

The research preliminarily examines the embodied implications of a vulnerable relationship –Samburu grandparents and their young caregivers in the context of contemporary intercommunity violence, globalization, and resource scarcity. While children are recognized caregivers of adults in numerous contexts cross-culturally, including in developed nations like the U.S. and Britain, research on this issue is scant within anthropology and recent in other fields such as geography, medicine, and public health, where it has developed primarily since the 1990s.

Cultural Rights And Political Authority In Maya Guatemala, Dylan Dewitt Apr 2014

Cultural Rights And Political Authority In Maya Guatemala, Dylan Dewitt

UROP Posters

Following a civil war that engulfed the nation for thirty-six years, the Guatemalan state has taken steps to integrate previously remote territories into its broader political and economic system. This has led to the increased political inclusion and economic integration of Mayan communities that had remained on the outskirts of Ladino society. Unfortunately, not much attention has been given to understanding the effects of this process on indigenous political institutions. After traveling to the Western Highlands region in December 2013 and surveying research from political science, anthropology, and environmental science, I have concluded that the 1996 Peace Accords have not …

The Death And Burial Practices Of The Berawan, Dorothy O'Boyle Apr 2014

The Death And Burial Practices Of The Berawan, Dorothy O'Boyle

UROP Posters

This research paper is about the small tribe of Berawan people, a subgroup of Kenyah, of Borneo, Indonesia. The Berawans live in an egalitarian and agricultural society in the rainforest very similar to the tribes they are derived from. These people have a distinct way of treating their dead that generations of people around the world have been intrigued by. Their treatment of the dead consists of "secondary treatment" or secondary burial of the body where the body is first placed in a clay jar on the corner of their slash-and-burn gardens to decompose into the earth; the second part …

Cryotherapy is commonly used in sport and performance applications however primarily as a means for improved recovery. Intermittent cooling during competition may contribute to improved performance by modifying perceptual or physiological stress. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of intermittent cooling (IC) versus no cooling (NC) through the course of a collegiate basketball game in a thermoneutral environment. METHODS: Eight healthy, (age, 22 ± 1 year, height, 186.7 ± 7.1 cm, weight 93.4 ± 10.1 kg) competitively-trained collegiate basketball players participated in a randomized and counterbalanced repeated measures protocol. A Sequence Of French Vernacular Architectural Design And Construction Methods In Colonial North America, 1690 -- 1850, Wade Terrell Tharp Apr 2014

A Sequence Of French Vernacular Architectural Design And Construction Methods In Colonial North America, 1690 -- 1850, Wade Terrell Tharp

Theses and Dissertations

This study examines published and unpublished historical archaeological research, historical documents research, and datable extant buildings to develop a temporal and geographical sequence of French colonial architectural designs and construction methods, particularly the poteaux-en-terre (posts-in-ground) and poteaux-sur-solle (posts-on-sill) elements in vernacular buildings, from the Western Great Lakes region to Louisiana, dating from 1690 to 1850. Such a sequence is needed to provide a basis for scholarship, discovery, and hypotheses about prospective French colonial archaeological sites. The integration of architectural material culture data and the historical record could also further scholarship on subjects such as how the French in colonial North …
