Charting Undergraduate Research: A Review Of The Ura Program, Ricky Mouser
Collection of Engaged Learning
To help automate analysis and visualization of undergraduate research outcomes. I produced two easy-to-use Excel sheets that automatically read in each program's yearly rosters an output presentation-quality reports and charts that smmarize and display both yearly and longitudinal information. This is a report incorporating such output that examines the URA Program.

“Une Nouvelle Vie”: Health Care And Identity Of Congolese Immigrants In Texas, Hayley Wagner
“Une Nouvelle Vie”: Health Care And Identity Of Congolese Immigrants In Texas, Hayley Wagner
Collection of Engaged Learning
Im/migration discourses, particularly those that emphasize migrants’ pursuit of a higher standard of living, bear upon the provision and/or denial of human rights while tending to oversimplify migrants’ arrival as the end of the struggle. In receiving countries, the availability of and proper access to health care become contentious because immigrants are often denied a status—whether that of citizenship, legality, or asylum—that denotes not only their ability to participate within a political system, but also their “deservingness” of state health services. Citing my ethnographic research with a population of francophone Congolese immigrants in Hurst, Texas, this paper argues that anthropology …

Backyard Archaeology: Informing The Southwest Michigan Community About Local Archaeological Sites And Research Through The “Evidence Found” Exhibit, Tabitha Hubbard
Honors Theses
This paper is a report of my involvement with and background research for an upcoming exhibit called “Evidence Found.” The project is a collaboration between the Fort St. Joseph Archaeological Project and the Kalamazoo Valley Museum. In this report, I provide a description of the exhibit and my involvement in preparing the exhibit. I also present the research I conducted for use in the exhibit. The End Of Alzheimer's Disease - From Biochemical Pharmacology To Ecopsychosociology: A Personal Perspective, Peter J. Whitehouse
The End Of Alzheimer's Disease - From Biochemical Pharmacology To Ecopsychosociology: A Personal Perspective, Peter J. Whitehouse
Faculty Scholarship
The future of the Alzheimer's disease (AD) field involves a more complete understanding not only the state of current scientific approaches, but also the linguistic and cultural context of preclinical and clinical research and policy activities. The challenges surrounding dementia are large and growing but are only part of broader social and health concerns. In this latter context, the current state of research in the AD area is reviewed together with necessary priorities in moving forward. Creating a more optimistic future will depend less on genetic and reductionist approaches and more on environmental and intergenerative approaches that will aid in …

Discussion, Critical Reflection, Knowledge Construction In Experiential Education. A Response To "Taking People's History Back To The People: An Approach To Making History Popular, Relevant, And Intellectual", Michael Kopish
Democracy & Education
This response offers cross-disciplinary pedagogical insights and conceptual considerations as a supplement to the democratic experiential history project described by Lempert (2013). The intent of the project is ambitious and worthwhile; however, without emphasis on the critical process of sense-making through discussion, reflection, and collaborative knowledge construction the project falls short of its potential impact. In the paper I offer suggestions and recommendations for practitioners who might consider enacting the project.

We Were There Too: Learning From Black Male Teachers In Mississippi About Successful Teaching Of Black Students, Cleveland Hayes, Brenda Juarez, Veronica Escoffery-Runnels
Democracy & Education
Applying culturally relevant and social justice–oriented notions of teaching and learning and a critical race theory (CRT) analysis of teacher preparation in the United States, this study examines the oral life histories of two Black male teachers recognized for their successful teaching of Black students. These histories provide us with a venue for identifying thematic patterns across the two teachers' educational philosophies and pedagogical practices and for analyzing how these teachers' respective personal and professional experiences have influenced their individual and collective approaches to teaching and learning.

Revisiting Weber’S Charismatic Leadership: Learning From The Past And Looking To The Future, Ivana Milosevic, A. Erin Bass
Revisiting Weber’S Charismatic Leadership: Learning From The Past And Looking To The Future, Ivana Milosevic, A. Erin Bass
Marketing and Management Faculty Publications
Purpose – Weber emphasized the informal structure, followers' power, and time in charismatic leadership; yet the extant literature either overlooks or underplays the significance of each of these facets. The aim of this paper is to revisit Weber's conceptualizations of charisma and illuminate these facets, thus creating new avenues for the contemporary charismatic leadership research. Design/methodology/approach – The focus of this research is on analysis of Weber's conceptualization of charisma. The analysis of selected quotes is grounded within contemporary discourse in order to illustrate how three overlooked facets may propel future research on charismatic leadership. Findings – By revisiting Weber's …
Gettin' Weird Together: The Performance Of Identity And Community Through Cultural Artifacts Of Electronic Dance Music Culture, Andrew Matthew Wagner
Gettin' Weird Together: The Performance Of Identity And Community Through Cultural Artifacts Of Electronic Dance Music Culture, Andrew Matthew Wagner
Theses and Dissertations
The growing popularity of Electronic Dance Music (EDM) on nearly every continent has given rise to the transition of EDM music from underground raves to large scale, multiple-day music festivals. Attendance at EDM events, whether at concerts or festivals, is primarily dominated by today's youth generation. The number of youth attending these events continues to grow as elements of EDM are being mixed into other mainstream music genres. This increase in the popularity of EDM has been an area of research interest in the past decades for a variety of disciplines, such as psychology, sociology, marketing, and tourism. The present …
