Moving Beyond The College-Preparatory High School Model To A College-Going Culture In Urban Catholic High Schools, Ursula S. Aldana Apr 2014

Moving Beyond The College-Preparatory High School Model To A College-Going Culture In Urban Catholic High Schools, Ursula S. Aldana

Journal of Catholic Education

A college-going culture has been found to improve academic outcomes for underrepresented high school students (Allen, Kimura-Walsh, & Griffin, 2009; Stanton-Salazar, 2010). The research on Catholic high schools shows their college-preparatory environment ability to produce successful outcomes for African-American and Latino students (Bryk, Lee, & Holland, 1993). This study examines two urban Catholic high schools and how they construct opportunities for low-income Latino and African-American male students. The year-long study draws from 1) ethnographic field notes; 2) interviews with students and staff; 3) survey and 4) student data. Data suggests that although both schools focused on preparing students for college, …

Tensions Between Catholic Identity And Academic Achievement At An Urban Catholic High School, Carrie Fuller, Lauri Johnson Apr 2014

Tensions Between Catholic Identity And Academic Achievement At An Urban Catholic High School, Carrie Fuller, Lauri Johnson

Journal of Catholic Education

Through a secondary analysis of a case study on successful school leadership, this study inquired into the lived experiences and understandings of Catholic identity from the perspectives of administrators, faculty, staff, and students at one urban Catholic school in the northeastern United States. Participants generally spoke about Catholic identity in terms of its explicit or implicit nature. Specifically, explicit Catholic identity relating to campus ministry, faith formation of students, and community service were noted to be areas for improvement. The analysis showed that tensions concerning the school’s Catholic identity were sidelined in the pursuit of academic excellence as measured by …

Forming The Whole Disciple: A Guide To Crafting A Truly Holistic Catholic Religious Education, Patrick R. Manning Apr 2014

Forming The Whole Disciple: A Guide To Crafting A Truly Holistic Catholic Religious Education, Patrick R. Manning

Journal of Catholic Education

It is a commonplace for Catholic schools to claim that they educate the “whole” person in the faith, yet exactly what this means and how to accomplish it is harder to say. Though these matters of holistic formation and Catholic identity are always important, they are especially so at present given ongoing efforts to implement the U.S. bishops’ Framework for a high school religion curriculum. With these concerns in mind, this article aims to offer a traditionally-grounded, actionable answer to the questions, ‘Whom do we hope our students will become, and how do we help them towards that goal?’ The …

The Catholic School As A Courtyard Of The Gentiles, Leonardo Franchi Apr 2014

The Catholic School As A Courtyard Of The Gentiles, Leonardo Franchi

Journal of Catholic Education

The setting up of the Courtyard of the Gentiles by Pope Benedict XVI has provided the Catholic Church with an official forum for dialogue with atheists. The intellectual energy surrounding this initiative can be harnessed to focus on how the contemporary Catholic school addressed its responsibilities to the Catholic community while offering a good education to people of other religious traditions. The Courtyard initiative is an opportunity for the Catholic educational community to re-consider its purpose as an ecclesial agent in a plural society. This article argues that the distinctive content and pedagogy it employs in this endeavor is a …

Starting A Conversation: The Need For And Application Of Service Design In International Development, Ruth Edmonds, Mary Rose Cook Apr 2014

Starting A Conversation: The Need For And Application Of Service Design In International Development, Ruth Edmonds, Mary Rose Cook

ServDes Conference Series

International Development is concerned with the provision of public services and development programmes in contexts where resources are scarce and states are often fragile. Service design has much to offer the kinds of problems faced by International Development organisations. In this paper; we open a conversation about the need for; and application of; Service Design in International Development; focusing on two of its core principles; collaboration and user-centeredness. We also unpack some problematics that need attention when applying a Service Design approach to International Development programming.

What Triggers Us?! A Close Look At Socio-Material Situations Of Co-Designing Services, Mette Agger Eriksen Apr 2014

What Triggers Us?! A Close Look At Socio-Material Situations Of Co-Designing Services, Mette Agger Eriksen

ServDes Conference Series

Relations between Service Design and Participatory Design have been established. Yet; on the topic of how; in the situation; in the conversation; to stage and establish fruitful co-designing practices; a closer relationship can still be established - to further support practices of co-designing for complex service futures. Based on various participatory and socio-material theoretical perspectives including my previous co-design research; this paper goes beyond focusing on tools for co-creation; and rather looks into various ‘triggers’ of participation in the co-design situation. Through analysis of some conversations around mapping people; places and things in a ‘service project landscape’ in a teaching …

A Research Framework For Service Evaluation, Francesca Foglieni, Stefano Maffei, Beatrice Villari Apr 2014

A Research Framework For Service Evaluation, Francesca Foglieni, Stefano Maffei, Beatrice Villari

ServDes Conference Series

The authors propose a reflection on service evaluation research and practice starting with the assumption that the evaluation process in the service field is still a fragmented and controversial issue. The paper describes a first attempt to build a research framework targeted to better understand which can be the role of evaluation in the service lifecycle (from a design to a release phase). The final purpose is thus to propose a service evaluation overview by mapping existing theories and tools coming from different service-related disciplines and to outline an in-progress interpretive theoretical model.

Toward An Anthropology Of Services, Jeanette Blomberg, Chuck Darrah Apr 2014

Toward An Anthropology Of Services, Jeanette Blomberg, Chuck Darrah

ServDes Conference Series

This paper proposes an anthropology of services with implications for service science and design. Contemporary services are often presented as a rupture with previous economic regimes such as manufacturing; a discontinuity that allows services to be conceptualized as a professional domain. We argue instead that services have long characterized the human condition and that they are always embedded in local contexts. An anthropology of services explicates these social contexts to develop more varied and grounded approaches to service encounters; notions of co-production and co-creation; value propositions; and service systems. Paradoxically; an anthropology of services draws attention to the conceptual and …

Weaving Place Into The Centre Of Service Design: A Reflective Case Study, Alison Prendiville Apr 2014

Weaving Place Into The Centre Of Service Design: A Reflective Case Study, Alison Prendiville

ServDes Conference Series

This paper proposes a design anthropololgy of place in the design of services; particularly when designing community based services for the elderly. Drawing on two service design projects located in the Byker area of Newcastle; UK; which brought together Ordnance Survey [OS]; Age UK Newcastle and a Post-graduate Masters programme; in this paper it describes how design methods and practices captured and communicated a sense of place. The paper takes an anthropological perspective to reflect on how these methods make visible and tangible the every day informal networks that support the elderly community within Byker. Finally; the paper considers how …

Household Ecology And Out-Migration Among Ethnic Karen Along The Thai-Myanmar Border, Daniel M. Parker, James W. Wood, Shinsuke Tomita, Sharon Dewitte, Julia Jennings, Liwang Cui

Anthropology Faculty Scholarship

Local migration in developing-world settings, particularly among rural populations, is an important yet understudied demographic process. Research on migration in such populations can help us test and inform anthropological and demographic theory. Furthermore, it can lead to a better understanding of modern population distributions and epidemiologic landscapes.

The Origins Of Mesoamerican Civilization, Oliver Aurand Apr 2014

The Origins Of Mesoamerican Civilization, Oliver Aurand

UROP Posters

This research project will attempt to unravel the various threads of cultural influence that existed in Archaic Mesoamerica. Of particular interest will be to test the validity of the theory that there is a “mother culture,” usually posited as the Olmec, which was responsible for the innovations that led to the social complexities of later cultures such as the Mayans and Aztecs. Alternately, it is possible that innovations developed by several different cultures were shared through diffusion due to strong trade networks and other methods. This research question is important because it deals with the evolutionary development of advanced social …

Identifying The Visible: A Look At How Economic Class And Ethnicity Influence Women's Visibility Within A Household, Cori Elise Rich Apr 2014

Identifying The Visible: A Look At How Economic Class And Ethnicity Influence Women's Visibility Within A Household, Cori Elise Rich

Theses and Dissertations

Archaeology has allowed for underrepresented, often invisible, groups of people within history to become visible and have their stories told. Minority groups such as women, African Americans, and those occupying the lower class are just some of these underrepresented groups who have been identified through cultural remains. Despite archaeologists' best efforts in identifying these groups; there is still much work yet to be conducted. There is a lack of information from the eighteenth-century, and even less work done on the way ethnicity and class impact women's visibility within the archaeological record.

This paper utilizes seven site reports, from households of …

A Look At Tuberculosis And Multi-Drug Resistant Tb In The United States & China, Megan K. Healy Apr 2014

A Look At Tuberculosis And Multi-Drug Resistant Tb In The United States & China, Megan K. Healy

UROP Posters

There are many things plaguing the world today, one of them is Mycobacterium tuberculosis otherwise known as Tuberculosis (TB). Since it’s origin TB has become more virulent against antibiotics and became multi-drug resistant (MDR-TB). Two countries come to mind for comparison, China and the United States. China is having severe problems with the disease while the United States is managing it a bit better. Each country has unique circumstances and the statistics show that both may be doing better with just TB but MDR-TB is sticking around and gradually becoming more and more of an issue.

I Did That Wrong And It Sounded Good: An Ethnographic Study Of Vernacular Music Making In Higher Education, Victor Ezquerra Apr 2014

I Did That Wrong And It Sounded Good: An Ethnographic Study Of Vernacular Music Making In Higher Education, Victor Ezquerra

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this ethnographic study was to examine vernacular music making in higher education. The participants, undergraduate music education majors (N=23 for Fall, N=10 for Spring), were investigated throughout the course of the 2012-2013 academic year. A constructivist philosophical framework was applied and data were collected using several methodologies including participant observation, journals, interviews, and audiovisual and multimedia methods. Results showed that students were able to successfully learn, create, and share music in a vernacular manner. Participants took a pragmatic approach to making music. Furthermore, students engaged several aspects of music making they had not encountered in traditional music …

There are a great number of chipped stone artifacts in the archaeological record and the Virtual Curation Laboratory (VCL) at Virginia Commonwealth University is one place that stores and categorizes them through digital means. As an Intern with the VCL, I help add to the existing data collection of chipped stone artifacts along with the virtual curation of these artifacts. The VCL uses the NextEngine Desktop 3D scanner for digitally archiving each of the chipped stone artifacts. Besides providing a digital archive, the VCL also prints out plastic replicas of the artifacts by using a Makerbot Replicator. This digital way …
